As a Catholic parent committed to truth and supporting our community, I feel compelled to share our family's personal experiences with SJA to help other families make informed educational decisions.
Initially, we chose SJA because of its strong devotion to Catholic teaching and its independence from government funding and regulation. The school operates independently and is not affiliated with the Catholic Diocese of San Diego, granting it substantial autonomy.
However, we encountered significant challenges due to the school's independence, particularly regarding accountability, communication, and educational quality. Specifically:
* Teacher Credentials and Experience:
Private schools, including SJA, are not required to hire credentialed or experienced teachers. I strongly encourage parents to directly inquire about teacher qualifications and experience when evaluating schools, as this became a noticeable area of concern for us.
* Classroom Observations:
During our child's enrollment, the school did not permit parents to observe classrooms. This policy created uncertainty and discomfort for us, limiting our insight into the daily educational environment.
* Communication and Feedback:
We struggled to obtain timely and accurate feedback from teachers regarding our child's academic and social progress. Communication often felt delayed or inadequate, making proactive problem-solving difficult.
* Student Distress Due to Bullying:
Although we did not directly witness bullying incidents, we personally observed our child's distress and emotional upset due to bullying. Efforts to resolve these concerns constructively with teachers and administrators were met with resistance or dismissal rather than collaboration.
* Conflict Resolution:
When attempting to escalate these concerns to the administration or the school board, we faced defensive responses and found no neutral party available to mediate or resolve conflicts fairly.
While SJA is strong in its Catholic identity, the gaps we observed in communication, transparency, teacher qualifications, and student emotional support ultimately caused our family to seek alternatives.
Our experience led us to discover a wonderful local charter school where our children now thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. This school provides a conservative, collaborative, joyful, and professionally run educational environment. Additionally, transitioning from private tuition to a charter school allowed our family to save a significant amount of money each year.
Before writing off California public education entirely, I encourage you to explore local charter options--you might be surprised at the excellent education, positive environment, and substantial financial savings available. read more
