Where do I start...Hmmm, my 4 years at good ol' CHS...well before I jump in on that, let me first…read moresay that I have been a high school teacher and administrator in north SD County for 27 years, 9 of which were actually at Carlsbad. My point is I hear a lot of non Carlsbad kids, (grads and current students) state "I hate my school", for a variety of reasons. I have NEVER heard 1 kid, during my time as a student or during the 9 years I was the AD, teacher and Head Baseball Coach, say that about Carlsbad. Not one! I'm not saying those kids aren't out there but all things considered, CHS is a great school. Unless maybe you are a female? I have heard from some students there are a lot of "Mean Girls" there who pick on girls who don't look the CHS way. I don't really know anything about that since I didn't have to concern myself with all that. My focus as a student was being friendly to all the ladies! Besides that, you've got waves just a mile or 2 from a gorgeous campus that was completely remodeled in 2011 (I was there). This is why you have the Nation's top competition Surf Team in addition to a premier athletic program and Californias top rated student fan section. Academics are top notch as well as graduates typically are accepted to the nations premier universities. They have a robust AP program as well. The one area that, for me, is a slight "knock" is the student body demographics which is quite homogenous. Maybe that is a plus win in your book? maybe not...regardless of race/ethnicity, the socioeconomic status of 80% of the families, is high many, quite high!

Many of these kids do not want to learn. The party culture and misbehaviors affect the school to…read morenot value education. The student body is segregated between the majority of whites and hispanics, interacting within their own friend groups. Lack of diversity in the student body. I had a mentor teacher Marissa Considine who was the worst mentor. She never had a student teacher before and wanted to abuse my free labor to her advantage, not contributing to my growth. She affected me psychologically, emotionally, and gave up on me. She wasn't a significant teacher gearing her students toward a mature development. I don't find this school to be the best choice to value education. The good things about this school is extracurriculars, especially sports.

My son enrolled in the middle of his sophomore year, and it has been an absolute game changer. I…read moredon't know how Army and Navy Academy (ANA) does it, but within two months they transformed him from a teenager influenced by "red pill" voices insisting school was pointless--and that stealing, dealing, and hustling were the keys to success--into a respectful, motivated, disciplined young man who communicates openly and reaches out for support when he needs it. Before ANA, we spent 18 months trying everything: DBT therapy, family systems therapy, private boys coaching, and multiple specialized retreats for struggling teens. None of it helped. In fact, many interventions pushed him even farther away from his best self. ANA, on the other hand, grounded him almost immediately. Now he's on the Dean's List, was voted Best Artist, and loves attending ANA. The other day, I nearly cried when I heard him tell his grandmother, "It's a privilege to attend ANA." His commanding officer captured the essence of the school after a minor infraction: "We are not a reform school. We are not a therapeutic boarding school. We are an elite preparatory academy developing the future leaders of the world. You decide if you belong here." And somehow, through the teachers, counselors, structure, activities, and community, my son decided for himself that he does belong there. ANA gave my son his future back. We are grateful beyond words.

Talk about private school education at a public school price....Amazing facilities, dedicated staff and teachers, excellent academic education. And the principal, Cesar Morales, is a rock star principal who really cares about being fair and making things right. The only hiccups here come from being a new ("startup") school - which meant early on we had some dud teachers and few course options - but those issues are fading away as the school grows. It's an academically challenging school but my student has done well and is prepared for university next year. There are a lot of false rumors out there from people trying to start a rivalry but if you're considering this school I encourage you to take the tour and talk to actual students and parents!

Also take what is written her as a long forgetten memory, beyond the statute of limitations. Don't worry most of the staff from back then are dead of retired. I was a terror to this school and it's faculty. Not only was a honor student, athlete and musician, but unlike the rest of those geeks I would ditch, do drugs, mouth off, not necessarily vandalize persay, but deface things and yeah just terrorize people. Fights, suspensions. Basically a Jekyll and Hyde of sorts in that my constant criticism was a waste of talent. Some things I remember was the sports programs of track, basketball, flag football (co-ed). A lot of firsts happened for me here. Most of which I can't publicly talk about (legally), but it was a good school because of the teachers. They cared more about me that I did. I remember eating a lot of pizza and cornuts while I was here. Puberty is rough for everyone too, so being the last full middle school class was nice(top of the class in elementary to middle of the road in middle school), unlike the class below us who went form a year from the top to being bottom rung the next year, never being the kings of the castle until final year in HS. I actually liked the aging campus because it had a full track, sort of sparwling with various levels instead of the track home flatness I'd been used to. It felt like college for a 12 year old. Anyhow I had great times, great memories and I learned a lot from here. I recommend going here from 1995-1997, probably way better than now.

Go Wildcats! It's EC time! It's EC time! What! What!…read more(somewhere Tony A. is laughing because I got school pride!) My high school experience was pretty complete I would say: I was a member of the Associated Student Body (ASB...otherwise known as the Student Council). I was Senior Class President. I was Cross Country Captain. I was a 4 year Varsity Cross Country and 3 year Track Athlete. I was an Honors Student that graduated at the top of my class. I took Advanced Placement classes and got straight As. I handled my language requirement by sophomore year (it pays to migrate from peru to southern california when it comes to that). I went to all the dances, football games, basketball games, theater performances and music recitals! I was a part of a club called the Black Hat Society where we ate lunch, hung out with our favorite cool teacher, and discussed politics, culture and satanism. I went to parties and got drunk (but not ever before my junior year). I dated boys steadily through high school (one looser 1st semester freshman year, a great guy that now RIP second half of freshman year through junior year, and rob e. senior year). I built a float for homecoming my senior year.. and performed on it as well! (I was catwoman from batman and robyn for our superhero theme). I got to ditch class all the time because I was in ASB. I organized, mc'd and participated in pep rally's. I went on fieldtrips to major theme parks, including disneyland for grad night. I organized my prom... and my date was the prom king! http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=j46QH7rV60lZ9sGLusS3Uw&select=IeRR79asTYOzeupIPAUrPA&start=20 I enjoyed my english courses as well as social science courses, specially history and political science and the teachers who taught them! EL Camino has a huge campus... 3 different levels from all the way down at the track, to the gym and parking and theater, to the top cafeteria and classes. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/6t6_3CctJGYdrkzVttuVjQ?select=GaeBevEgNS-BdjaooUaPHA EC offered opportunities for those who wanted to take them. It was a diverse campus with many African American, Filipino, Samoan, Latino, White, etc... students. That meant, sometimes there was racial tension. Also, there was some gang violence considering its location and its size. There were many electives, clubs, and sports to be a member of, as well as after school activities. Also, plenty of honors and advanced placement classes. And... its a california distinguished school! But, like plenty of schools in california, it could have been better! Could have had newer and cleaner facilities (although they have since opened a spanking new science and math building... which looks exactly the same as our rival's: Oceanside High School). Also- some of the administration sucked. And the lunch food could have been healthier! ---------------- Alma Mater We pledge our hearts to brown and gold, the color of the hills and sun. My daughter has crutches and I parked my car by the front office curb to help her. A lady in a hat came over and told me I can't park there, despite there being a row of cars parked right behind me. She said "you can't block the ramp" to which I replied what ramp? There was none, just the same curb everyone was parked at. She told me just move, and pointed to parking spaces on the opposite side of the parking lot. I explained I'm helping my daughter who's injured and will just take a couple minutes. She said park over there and move when she's out. Another security person said "oh yeah, she's like that" when I mentioned the encounter. The other employee was a man who yelled at me when trying to leave the large south parking lot. I merely followed the people in front of me and he started yelling at me "what the hell are you doing!!?" I asked him what's wrong, I'm just following the flow of traffic, sorry I'm just picking up my kid. He apologized, seeming to realize he overreacted. Apparently they want you to circle all the way around the entire parking lot even if no other cars are there. I understand, at least this time he explained it was just an unusual policy, not my fault. Can't wait for my daughter to graduate, I went to Carlsbad high school and this place sounds like a nightmare in comparison. The math teacher and others are troubled individuals with egos and power trips, untouchable due to tenure, what I hear from other parent and students. Only people who were polite were the front office staff, they had better social skills. Hopefully someone speaks to the parking staff.

Ultimately, we were referred to Carlsbad Country Day School by an acquaintance--and we are so grateful we followed that recommendation. From the moment we toured the school, we were impressed. The staff is incredibly warm and welcoming, the campus is clean and beautiful, and the overall atmosphere is calm, joyful, and thoughtfully run. The curriculum is fantastic--our kids enjoy yoga, sports, reading class, and so much more. The school also provides healthy and delicious meals daily, which has been a huge relief for us as busy parents. Even better? The kids love the food! As for their teachers--Mrs. Gina and Ms. Stephanie are absolutely wonderful. You can tell they truly care about their students and pour so much effort into making each day special. Mrs. Gina creates such a positive and engaging learning environment for our older child, and Ms. Stephanie brings so much warmth, fun, and care to our younger child's classroom. We feel so lucky they have these amazing educators in their lives. Our kids are genuinely excited to go to school each day. One of them won't even say goodbye at drop-off, and at pickup, it's like pulling teeth to get them to leave--honestly, we take that as a great sign! The outdoor space is spacious and full of activities to keep them busy and happy. The school also hosts adorable events throughout the year--like a mother/son dance, a Christmas party, and more--which really make families feel connected. They also offer professional school photos twice a year, and the sibling pictures are to die for--some of the cutest we've ever had taken. We truly feel like we won the lottery finding Carlsbad Country Day School. Our only wish is that they went through elementary school too!
