My go to place for CT the emissions testing. Been here several times over the years, both weekdays and Saturdays, if you can swing it definitely go during the week. On Saturday I've waited as long as an hour+ for the test, on Friday it's was 10-15 mins. Obviously, your wait time is dependent upon how many people are in front of you. The technicians doing the tests have always been a pleasure to deal with. If you haven't been here before; the testing counter is on your immediate right when you come in, simply take a number and wait to be called. As with all CT testing locations, it's cash only for the test. read more

I used to love Hank Mays. That's why I stopped taking my car to the dealership and brought it there. The old gentleman running the place were wonderful; very kind and caring. Unfortunately, they all began retiring and the store is now run by young and Middle aged men that are cold and one of them is rude and arrogant and could not care less. We have 4 cars in their care and they have made lots of money from us. One would think they would at least be friendly. And their car service has been inconsistent and lacking in quality too. I obviously didn't read the reviews before I came here for an emissions test. I have probably gotten 25-30 emissions tests in my life and they have all been unmemorable because...they're emissions tests. For some reason, the folks at Hank May's think people enjoy the look, feel, and attitude of a DMV or the waiting room in Beetlejuice. The staff are surly, rude, and clearly don't want to be there. Last time I had my oil changed was here. Typically I do it myself but I bought new tires, had the alignment done, so I figured I might as well do the oil change. Whoever put the fucking plug back in obviously used an impact gun and rounded off the edges of the plug and now it's stuck. I'll eventually get it out. But WTF man!!! read more

They get the job done. They are cheaper than the dealership and usually available. I was shocked at the 2.5 reading as I've been coming here for years and sure I've had an issue or two but I don't know a single person who hasn't had an issue with their mechanic. Worst issue I had was incorrect diagnosis of 2 faulty catalytic converters before realizing the computer on the cost l car was bad. That cost me a pretty penny and could have been avoided if they validated the catalytic converts were bad before suggesting I replace or just suggesting I replace the computer since it was like 1k cheaper but you live and learn. read more

My husband stopped here to pick up a tire after we had an unfortunate series of events after getting a flat tire at 10pm the night before. Long story short, they didn't have the tire in stock so we went to a dealership in Greenwich. When the dealership went to change the tire, they couldn't find the rim because Hank Mays had kept it. When we called back, they showed no empathy and wouldn't help us get the tire back. Additionally, the person on the phone LIED to me saying they told my husband they were keeping it, when that conversation never took place. Poor customer service and cannot be trusted. read more

My family and I have been going to Hank May's for many years and always trusted them and were generally satisfied until recently. Last Thursday I brought my 2016 car in for an oil change and tire rotation, balance and an alignment for a vibration I was feeling while driving. I picked up my car that same day and they said everything was fine and fixed and I believed them as I usually do and they sent me on my way. Unfortunately the vibration was worse so I made an appointment for a few days later for them to recheck everything and hopefully find the problem. They had it for a few hours then called and said three of my wheels were bent which was causing the vibration and bumpy ride and no amount of balancing was going to help it. So the balance I had paid for last week was useless and they forgot to mention that my wheels were bent. They said they moved the more bent wheels to the rear so the vibration wouldn't be as bad but in doing that somehow all 20 of my lug nuts are stripped and they needed to put brand new lugs and that would cost $240 (which is an absurd amount for just lugs). My lugs were completely fine before I had brought it on Thursday and apparently weren't an issue when they rotated all four the first time. They tried to tell me that the way Ford makes their lug nuts look pretty is wrapping the outside in aluminum for the glossy finish. By the looks of the lugs that is true but if they were taken off and put back on the correct way they would not have been stripped so severely that if they were to put my original lugs back on my wheels I would never be able to get them off which is also true. Something happened between last Thursday and yesterday that made my lugs completely unusable and I was required to pay the $240 for the lugs which they destroyed in order to get my car back. The first time I drove my car after Hank May's did work on its engine, my car caught fire and burned to a point of being totaled. It is out of sheer luck alone that the fire did not harm my children, or burn down our home. Not only would I recommend avoiding Hank May's for any work involving a car's engine, I would avoid Hank May's at all costs. Details The Car: It was a 2004 Audi allroad 2.7T manual transmission, with 175k miles. While older, this car (nor any Audi's that I'm aware of) has no history of spontaneously catching on fire. Besides a check engine light, it was in otherwise perfect working order for an older car. The Work Done by Hank May's: In order to pass an emissions test as a new CT resident, Hank May's said they needed to replace the car's PCV valve. Two days later they said it was ready for pickup, and recommended I drive it for three days on the highway, then bring back to pass inspection. I drove the car a very short distance back home (less than 10min, no highways) with no issue. The Incident: The next time I drove the car was two days after it was picked up. I drove to get my children from their grandmother's, an hour drive including highway miles. I picked them up and drove to a nearby playground. About 30 minutes after exiting the car, I noticed smoke coming from the parking lot. As I walked back, I saw dark smoke coming out from underneath, and from the hood of my car. Within another minute there were flames, and as I was on the phone with the police, the entire front end of my car became engulfed in flames. The local fire department came to put out the fire. Luckily there were no other cars around, and no one was injured, but that is simply sheer luck. A police and fire report were filed. Hank May's Response: When I informed Hank May's of the event, I spoke to their manager. As I described the incident, the manager provided an unsolicited opinion that, given the job that was done, it was likely an electrical issue that caused the fire. At that meeting, I gave Hank May's an itemized list of expenses for what it cost me to get back to driving a car again, and let them know I expected to be reimbursed. I was not seeking a new car, simply for them to cover the expenses that I never would have had to incur if my car did not burn down. Over the phone, the business owner said she would, "Do the right thing to make up for this unfortunate incident." What that entailed was having their insurance company do an investigation. The insurer concluded the fire, "...originated in the left front area of the vehicle, where the electrical components are situated...was not related to the workmanship performed by the insured." This conclusion directly conflicts with the shop's manager who suggested that if the work was not done right, that an electrical issue could have caused the fire. Hank May's provided a refund for the work they did, and in doing so made sure not to admit they did anything wrong. The Facts: This car had never caught on fire in the past. These cars have no history of catching on fire. The very first time the car was driven on a highway, two days after being serviced for the first time by Hank May's, it became engulfed in flames as my children watched in shock. Hank May's own manager suggested that if the work was not done properly, an electrical issue could have caused a fire. This is exactly what the insurer says caused the fire, yet they concluded it was unrelated to the work done, and Hank May's was not legally responsible. The What Ifs: It was out of sheer luck alone that my children (8&10) and were not in the car when the fire started. We could have just as easily been stuck in traffic on I-95 when the flames broke out. Even worse, we could have come home, parked and gone to bed, only to have our house slowly catch fire with us all inside, asleep. It is only out of sheer luck that this event, following a visit to Hank May's, did not kill a young family. That sounds dramatic, but both scenarios were entirely possible. Conclusion: Given my experience, I would not trust Hank May's Discount Tire & Auto to do any engine-related work on a car. The owner can point to the insurance company's investigation to say, that while unfortunate, Hank May's had nothing to do with this event, and that I am upset. Yes, I am upset, but that does not change the facts of the incident. The only thing I have to gain from this review is to protect consumers from this business. I will be filing a complaint with the BBB, and informing the CT DMV of the details of the event. read more

Possible scam I came in to have a tire with a nail in it replaced + another tire with low tread. They replaced a total of 2 tires, 1 with tread issue and 1 good tire (Not the one we agreed needed replacing) They sent me home with the flat/ nail tire still on the car. Within 48 hours I was back in to get this fixed. When I proposed locating the tire that was erroneously replaced, they said that the company that takes the old tires has not come. I personally looked in the old tire pile and could only find the tire with the tread issue, the good tire was gone. An employee then came up and told me someone had taken the good tire that I was searching for. They patched the tire with nail in it and I am driving to another shop to have it replaced. There is no way for me to discern that they did not take my good tire deliberately to sell privately ($300 new/ $150 used) and attempt to force me to buy an additional, uneccessary new tire at cost (+$300) read more

Took my car in today to have them look at my tires. They were fast and great about everything. They explained what needed to be done and answered my many questions. I would highly recommend them and will use them again. On a side note if you do go in on a Saturday just know you will probably have to wait but its def worth the wait. read more

I'm a bit disappointed with Hank May's. After years of my family using them, and generally being satisfied, this last visit for my mom's car left a lot to be desired. Firstly, not knowing too much about cars, she went to Hank May's because her tires were a bit low. The staff immediately told her the tires were dangerous and needed to be replaced immediately. They ordered her two tires like the ones already on the car. While original equipment, I'm glad she called me because there are much better tires on the market now. Secondly, they charged her full-price - no discount for years of being a loyal customer. When I researched tires at the Tire Rack, I found them significantly cheaper, and Hank Mays is an authorized Tire Rack installer. When I called them on it, they said they couldn't match tire rack's price. Weird - maybe they should ditch their supplier and just buy from tire rack. In any case, 4 tires were delivered to Hank Mays and installed. However, when my mom got the car back she noticed a small dent above one of the wheel arches of the car, and she is positive the installers at Hank May's did it through carelessness. They also left grease inside the car. Also, they "checked" the windshield wipers and brake fluid, and tried to scare her into getting those replaced. Luckily she did not fall for their upselling. Unfortunately the good folks at Hank Mays left the wipers on the "auto" position, and as soon as my mom left Hank Mays she went to a car wash, and of course the wipers came on, damaging one wiper. I'm sure Hank Mays will deny any of this, but it looks like my family is not the only one experiencing similar problems. :-( read more

I would give zero stars if possible. I came in with my own part asking for a quote for them to install it. Nothing complex just a rear engine mount, it would take maybe 30mins at most. They charge 125 per hour. I was quoted at 275 for the install. On top of that they found something else that was "wrong" bringing an additional $450+ for labor plus parts. In all after tax including the labor for my part plus the newly found defective parts I was quoted at $890. I got a second opinion up the road at the Monroe shop, they just charged me for 1 hours worth of labor. It took them 30min, and they charged $109 after tax. A far cry from the $275 I was quoted at hank may. I don't know what happened to this place, but buyer beware they will try to rip you off. It's really a shame. STAY AWAY FROM! read more

I want to strongly encourage that you avoid Hank Mays in Norwalk. I would describe the work performed and service I received on my vehicle as totally incompetent. Hank Mays installed tires on my vehicle backward. I have gotten mixed information from others tire experts about the impact of installing the tires backward, but some viewed it as potentially dangerous and likely to cause problems for the tires. Furthermore, I had asked Hank Mays to save one of my "old" tires, as it had a lot of good tread left and I intended to use it as a spare tire. Hank Mays apparently forgot my instructions and threw the tire out (a personal loss of maybe a couple hundred dollars). I was surprised management was so contentious when I inquired about a refund, given how self-evident their poor service was. I secured an inadequate refund and probably would have gotten nothing at all but for my unyielding persistence. I would strongly advise that you look elsewhere for your tire and auto needs. read more

Online these parts for my vehicle cost ~ $300-$350, They charged $450 plus 2 hours (@$125/hr ) of service. Will not be returning. Heed the bad warnings on here. read more

Went to mount two front tires and get a wheel alignment. Tried to charge me $25 per tire to mount, saying the cost went to disposal, valve stems, etc when I had the stems with the tires. After mentioning this they knocked it down to $15 per tire which is what it should be from the start. Also took longer than they initially told me which impacted the rest of my day. Bottom line, go in there knowing exactly what you want and about how much it should cost. Don't be afraid to push back a little. read more

I went to Hank Maze on July 13th 2019 around 2:30 p.m. they close at 4. I went in for an old change on my BMW which is lowered but which was done at the facilities several times before. As I asked them to give me the best oil change they have told me it was too late to bring it in my car is Easiest to do you drain the oil from the bottom and the filter is up on top you don't even need to get in between the motor to get to the filter all you need to do is drain the oil pouring new oil and let it fly he could not do that for me and for that I will never go back Hank maze get your mechanics together you're gonna lose business read more

Originally I had given Hank May's a bad review for doing work that shouldn't have been done on my car. I decided to take Hank up on his ad that if I wasn't happy he wanted to know about it. The next business day I received a call from Hank May himself. I was really impressed that he took the time to call me from his trip in AZ. He apologized fully and agreed that the work should not have been done considering the condition of the frame. If anything, the mechanic that worked on the car was overzealous in fixing everything he found and did not fully consider the condition of the vehicle and ultimately did not fix the original problem. Hank offered to refund the repairs in full and was genuinely upset that I wasn't happy. It is rare to find someone who is true to their word these days and Hank is certainly that. Because he personally took the time to make this right, I can honestly say his business is one to be trusted. His store manager also called me to apologize. Thank you very much Hank! Do not go here when I took my truck here to get tire rods and steering linkages done I gave it to them with the brand new parts to install for me when I came to pick up the truck I paid and told everything was done but when I got inside to drive off I was blown away to see the brand new parts in the passenger seat and I looked underneath the truck and saw the old parts still on my truck so I went back in and ask why are the old parts still on my truck and what did I just pay for? long story short they told me to leave it and the manager Ian I think his name was said he would fix it himself when I came back to pick up my truck the manager was finishing up when he was done I don't know if he was joking but he asked me if I wanted to check his work thank God I said yes because when he led me into the shop my truck still on the lift I checked the steering linkage the main center link was missing the bolt and none of them had the safety cotter pins in them I seriously had to check the manager of this mechanic shops work and point out and show him what he forgot to do like he's a band new shop hand and watch him do it correctly very shady maintenance here let alone how dangerous that could've been on a steering linkage do you not trust these people with your vehicles they have no idea what they're doing and will likely rip you off and take your money read more

Updated my sports car now it's a new Corvette GS. Not long after I bought it one of the rear tires picked up a screw. Now these tires are massive 335-width low profile Michelin's at $500 ea but thankfully the tire could be safely patched. I think these folks are licensed criminals. They got my daughter twice with their up-charge business model. The first time (4/3/21) she went in for a minor repair and had a $100 budget. She left with $700 bill (4 new tires and a bunch of other stuff). That was only 2 months ago. Today (5/8/21), it was an oil change. She arrived there at 7:40am for an 8am appointment and was promised that she'd be done by 8:30 so she could make it to work by 9am. Not only was she late for work, but they conned her into a tire rotation. A tire rotation!?!?! They just put 4 new tires on a month ago! If you use these folks, beware. You have now been forewarned. I have my mother's car mine was flooded from the Ida. The service parking brake came on as did another light. I have a Honda and my mother a Buick. Not even close. I called my Honda person who gave me some insight. Then I s to rated calling Buick dealerships. All wanted 165-180 per hour for diagnosis. It is an eight year old car with 17k miles on it. I looked at posts from my Norwalk Facebook group. One place had a three week wait. And three more said again with the diagnostics. I then called Hank Mays on Westport Ave. The man who I spoke with told me that the service parking brake light goes on for a couple of reasons. They would check it out. He then told me the light on the dashboard meant the car needed an oil change. I made an appointment. I brought the car in and John was my technician. He was very personable and straight shooter. They took care of everything for less than $50. They have a comfortable waiting area that was not very busy and free WiFi. I will definitely go back. read more

Booked an oil change and tire rotation on my subaru crosstrek Basic they tried to sell me a new battery because mine tested low. I declined their offer since ii had an appointment at Subaru for a recall later the same day. When i went to Subaru they checked the battery for free and it was perfectly fine. I went back to Hank Mays and told them and all they did was give me a receipt saying that it tested low and that they NEVER had a problem with their equipment Not good enough reason for me to ever go back to this place. Hank Mays is great. The place is a throw back from the 60's or 70's (in a good way). They keep it basic and provide helpful and friendly service. I've only come for emissions testing, VIN verification and that sort of thing but I do like their no-frills yet courteous approach. Old-School at it's best. Wait time was absurdly over the original estimate (double what I was quoted when I made my appointment) which did a reasonable amount of damage to my day. Management needs to do a better job of setting reasonable expectations for customers. Making people wait a few hours is fine with enough heads up but super inconvenient to spring that on someone with no notice. The fact that they were not apologetic about this delay was pretty aggregating as well. Would definitely avoid in the future. read more
