We had dinner before a show in downtown St Paul. The location made it easy to get to downtown with plenty of time to park and get to the venue. We had reservations and were seated immediately. I chose the spare ribs for my dinner and Husband had the pulled pork sandwich. The ribs were served with a zesty dry rub and sauce on the side. They were nice and tender. The meal came with Texas toast which I didn't try because the ribs were sitting right on top of it. It also had a piece of corn on the cob. Wish my meal would have been a titch hotter in temp but the food was tasty. We finished with the smoky crème brûlée which was delicious. The layout was cozy and dark with the bar at the center. I could see it being lively and loud on a busy night. Service was excellent. We took our time ordering and never felt rushed. Our food came out super fast. Driest, toughest brisket I've ever had. Reminded my husband of biscotti. Brisket is supposed to be tender and barely need slicing; this was like sawing through wood. The Mac and cheese and fried chicken were okay, but both were a little bland and too much breading on the chicken. The ribs were good. I'm hoping that I just caught them on a bad night. I had been looking forward to going here at the recommendation of others for Bourbon and BBQ. I made a reservation for 7:30p and upon walking in, there was no one manning the check-in area. A bartender did wave to us so we knew that they were aware of our presence but it was a good 6-7 minutes before anyone ever came to the front to check us in and seat us. Had it been packed I could understand that maybe they were understaffed but the place was not even half full. I was willing to overlook that if the food made up for it but i never found out. Upon seating the menu looked like some of the South's greatest hits. We ordered some cocktails and tried to order the cauliflower app that sounded amazing but were told they were out of cauliflower for the night. Upon delivering our drinks, our server informed us that they had just run out of brisket. That was too bad as it was the primary reason that I came in for dinner. However, there were a few other things on the menu that seemed enticing, such as ribs and chicken. When our server came back to take our order, I decided to order ribs and that is when she informed me that they were now out of ribs. OK, Plan B was not going to happen so I went to plan C which was barbecued/smoked chicken. Our server then got this odd look on her face and said that she was going to go check, but she thought that they may be running out of chicken. Sure enough, she came back and told me they were now out of chicken as well! It is hard for me to understand a place known for barbecue running out of barbecue. I would understand if I was coming in late in the evening and they had simply sold out, but we were here mid dinner rush, and the place was not busy. The only things left on the menu were sandwiches and salads. My party was disappointed and to make matters worse, we were celebrating a birthday but it was definitely a No BBQ for the birthday boy kind of night! Our server could sense our disappointment and we began talking with her about possibly just leaving. Instead of any attempt at service recovery, she simply said she was sorry and that she would totally understand if we left and that she would be happy to bring us our bill immediately. Needless to say, we paid for our drinks and walked out. Like I said, I hope I just caught them on and off night, but there was nothing impressive about the lack of food and the lack of service recovery. The atmosphere was sunny with no chances of rain and I loved every minute of it. Sundays are for brunch and I went with a hungry stomach. Took my seat around 1115a and started ordering. First up was my drink Prosecco with a side of Elderflower liqueur because there was no St. Germain. Close to the flavor tho! It was actually quite yummy as well. Then I placed my ordered... I went with the HOG BREAKFAST PARTY which contains 2 Eggs, Greens, Bacon or Sausage, Roadside Potatoes, Biscuit. I loved the roadside potatoes, and I opted for sausage was equally good. The green I would suggest a little more umph in it and the eggs were standard. Overall a decent 3 out of 5 meal. I would like to go back and try the regular menu. Remember I said I sat around 1115a, it was long until 1210p that I noticed my food hasn't arrived. Spoke with our waiter who was apologetic and on the hunt to see what's going on. It was in this moment that I realized this business takes their customers seriously. The waiter returned to advise the kitchen was running behind, but his manager would be out to speak with us. Upon arrival the manager advised he had some research and noticed we had been waiting a very long time. By this time food arrived at 1227P. He informed us that the bill was taken care of and gave a gift card for the inconvenience. We assured him that taking care of the bill was enough but he insisted we take the gift card as well. Came in late on a Saturday night after a birthday outing mostly for bar food. We had a large party and were able to get enough seating for 12 people quickly. There were about 6 items to choose from on the late night menu so we went for two orders of wings, Mac n cheese and fries (which I was originally told were not available and that why I ordered the Mac n cheese). My friend also added cornbread and an espresso martini to the mix. The food came out pretty quick given the number of people in our party. The French fries were the magical corkscrew kind that make you feel like you're eating one of those really small petite Potatoes each time you take one, fresh, hot and crisp! The Mac and cheese was actually terrible it was bland I tasted no salt, no pepper and honestly think it may have been instant. I was very confused about the hot Cheetos on top and was even more disappointed when they made a mistake and thought we ordered two. Now for the wings I've never gotten full wings at bar just the party serving (drums or flats) so to see a full wing was a treat ... or so I thought. The lemon pepper tasted like a fresh out of grease chicken wing drenched in lemon juice it was absolutely gross. The hot honey was super salty ... I tasted no honey or spice just salt. I sampled the martini and it was just ok, a bit on the watery side for me I like a bolder, fuller expressotini. Service was great, and really enjoyed the cocktail Sage Against the Machine and had two of those! So refreshing! We started with the sausage gravy poutine, and it's a bit different than other poutines, but it was really tasty! I do wish the potato wedges were smaller, but the sausage gravy was tasty. There mussels was super tender and the sauce was flavorful that could go with any seafood or pasta. The winter salad was refreshing with the candied beet strips, croutons, endives and lettuce. The vinaigrette could have a little more salt for some flavor so that the salad is not so bitter. The combo #5 was the bang for your buck. The briskets were very tender and has good flavor with the sauce with it. The corn was good. Cornbread Muffin was a little densed and tough but still good with the honey butter. This poutine was hands down the best I've ever had, very crispy fries which is important when having poutine, the gravy has sausage in it and the cheese curds on top were extra squeaky. I was so looking forward to trying Handsome Hog. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be returning. TLDR; good service, good cocktails, meh food, bad smell in dining area Service was great - shout out to Ellie! The brunch menu looked like a good mix of breakfast and lunch offerings. Our little group was excited to try a few different dishes. The brunch cocktails also all sounded so good! We opted for the mimosa of the day - grapefruit, vanilla, lavender - very yummy! Handsome Hog Hot Brown - The entree I ordered came lukewarm and was kinda bland. I was surprised at the lack of flavor given the menu description. I was also surprised at my lack of enjoyment, since usually having a cocktail makes food taste even better. I actually regretted ordering this dish, only took a few bites and couldn't make myself eat more of it. Even my fried egg was cold by the time it made it to the table. Tiny redeeming factor was that I could douse it with Crybaby Craig's hot sauce. After perusing other reviews, it seems my experience isn't abnormal and is part of the larger downhill trend patrons have noticed. We also shared a cinnamon roll at the end of our meal - we all eyed it on the menu initially lol. It was sooooo good! The praline sauce really stood out, plus the roll was nice and warm! If I hadn't tried the cinnamon roll, I might've rated this experience a 2/5. We were seating in a side room off the main bar and dining area. I was looking forward to the cute ambiance of the main room and was bummed we were sat elsewhere when the main room was only half filled. However, I understand utilizing the whole restaurant helps servers maintain their sections and helps with noise level. The real reason why the ambiance was absolutely terrible was because the secondary dining room smelt awful. My friend noted that the walk in freezer is accessed from that dining room and that's where the terrible smell was coming from. At one point we were all breathing through our mouths. First off the place is beautiful. We had a little trouble figuring out the entrance to the restaurant. We got seated right away since we were one of the first ones there. Staff is amazing, friendly and prompt. We had a two year old with us and our server brought her a cup of water and a kiddy menu with crayons right away. Food was delicious. If you love Top Chef, this is a fun stop but it's also phenomenal food. Started with parking, close and easy. We got mussels and crab hush puppies to start. Both were good. For my taste the outside of the hush puppies were a bit over done, but really good inside. Mussels were in a chili based sauce. The sauce over shadowed the mussels a bit in my opinion. First time here and I was very impressed. The service was amazing! Armand was our bartender/server and he treated us like we were regulars. The cocktails were outstanding! I can be a bit of a snob when it comes to cocktails but every drink we had was well worth the price and felt like something far beyond a standard drink. The 'We Smoke Anything' and 'I Drink and I Know Things' we're both superb. Also of note was the "brown Bible" menu which features their extensive whisky selection. The food was good. I really enjoyed the crab cake hush puppies and our whole table agreed the bacon fat popcorn was delicious. Crab Cake Hushpuppies: The Hushpuppies were perfectly fried with just the right amount of crab filling and the dipping sauce is to die for. Bacon fat popcorn is an absolute must appetizer. The only problem is you won't want to share it. The entrée: We shared the Combo #5. The combo comes with two meats to choose from and I would suggest adding a third for an additional $6. We went with pulled pork, brisket and smoked chicken. Cocktail: One of the best named cocktails I've come across, "I Drink And I Know Things" and it lived up to its name, it was absolutely perfect. This was hands down the worst meal that I've had in a long time. I was a huge fan of the chef, Justin, from Top Chep Kentucky but there is no way this dish would have gotten him very far in the competition. I can practically see Padma's head shaking in disappointment. I ordered the brisket hash because they were out of the famous hot browns. It tasted like mashed up baby food mixed with cold leftover brisket. That's really the only way to describe it. Truthfully, I panic ordered that dish when they said they were not featuring the hot browns that day. The other weird thing was that my food came five minutes after I ordered it. The restaurant was half empty so I guess it's not that surprising that it was fast but still... five minutes? The table next to me also got their food very quickly. Like what's the rush if you have so many empty seats? I was in and out of that restaurant in 20 minutes or so. To add insult to injury, my stomach felt upset the rest of the day. I just canceled my dinner reservation that I was SO looking forward to because I can only stomach soup, saltines and ginger ale right now. Needless to say, I will not be visiting here again.
