Well Hey Travoodies Hey. I visited the Handsome Hog, venturing to their patio. I can say it was a very nice day yesterday and the patio was a nice addition. The atmosphere was sunny with no chances of rain and I loved every minute of it. Sundays are for brunch and I went with a hungry stomach. Took my seat around 1115a and started ordering. First up was my drink Prosecco with a side of Elderflower liqueur because there was no St. Germain. Close to the flavor tho! It was actually quite yummy as well. Then I placed my ordered... I went with the HOG BREAKFAST PARTY which contains 2 Eggs, Greens, Bacon or Sausage, Roadside Potatoes, Biscuit. I loved the roadside potatoes, and I opted for sausage was equally good. The green I would suggest a little more umph in it and the eggs were standard. Overall a decent 3 out of 5 meal. I would like to go back and try the regular menu. Remember I said I sat around 1115a, it was long until 1210p that I noticed my food hasn't arrived. Spoke with our waiter who was apologetic and on the hunt to see what's going on. It was in this moment that I realized this business takes their customers seriously. The waiter returned to advise the kitchen was running behind, but his manager would be out to speak with us. Upon arrival the manager advised he had some research and noticed we had been waiting a very long time. By this time food arrived at 1227P. He informed us that the bill was taken care of and gave a gift card for the inconvenience. We assured him that taking care of the bill was enough but he insisted we take the gift card as well. That's amazing customer service. Thank you to the manager and waiter for such excellent care.

Came in late on a Saturday night after a birthday outing mostly for bar food. We had a large party and were able to get enough seating for 12 people quickly. There were about 6 items to choose from on the late night menu so we went for two orders of wings, Mac n cheese and fries (which I was originally told were not available and that why I ordered the Mac n cheese). My friend also added cornbread and an espresso martini to the mix. The food came out pretty quick given the number of people in our party. The French fries were the magical corkscrew kind that make you feel like you're eating one of those really small petite Potatoes each time you take one, fresh, hot and crisp! The Mac and cheese was actually terrible it was bland I tasted no salt, no pepper and honestly think it may have been instant. I was very confused about the hot Cheetos on top and was even more disappointed when they made a mistake and thought we ordered two. Now for the wings I've never gotten full wings at bar just the party serving (drums or flats) so to see a full wing was a treat ... or so I thought. The lemon pepper tasted like a fresh out of grease chicken wing drenched in lemon juice it was absolutely gross. The hot honey was super salty ... I tasted no honey or spice just salt. I sampled the martini and it was just ok, a bit on the watery side for me I like a bolder, fuller expressotini. Overall this place had a good vibe, great location, fast service and nice ambiance but the food was a major miss for me.

Overall experience was alright. Our server was the best part, but the food wasn't all that great. Drinks were mediocre and dishs didn't have a ton of flavor in my opinion. - Anthony

Chicken N Waffles

If you're looking for a weekend brunch in Saint Paul, Handsome Hog is well worth your stop. Off Selby in the shadow of the Saint Paul Cathedral, this restaurant won't catch your eye from the street. Inside has a low-light upscale bar feel, and I hear there's outdoor seating in the warmer months. We started with mimosas ($10), plus a giant, gooey cinnamon roll ($10) to share. When your server asks if you'd like to start with one, the only answer is yes! My review is mainly for the Chicken 'n Waffles ($17) however, which really impressed me. I wouldn't usually go for this dish, for fear of it being too dry. What I got, though, was an amazingly moist pair of fried chicken wings on fluffy waffles, all doused in bourbon maple syrup. No one flavor was too overpowering, just serious melt-in-your mouth goodness. I'll be back to eat it again on the patio!

I love going to Handsome Hog! It's a great go-to, when you want a solid spot in St. Paul. It has a huge wrap-around bar with tvs, and plenty of seating. The bar is surrounded by a variety of different tables/seating arrangements, depending on how large your party is. We made reservations the day of. It's very well decorated with good ambience lighting. The vibe was great for our date night. Our server was friendly, quick and attentive! The drinks were delightful. I had a dirty martini and my boyfriend got a bourbon which was brought out with a fun smokey presentation. Our food was SO good! I love southern food and this place definitely hits the spot. It's comfort food, elevated. The beautiful simplicity of the plating keeps the stars of the show on the burst of flavors in each bite. My Jambalaya was perfectly balanced, every spoonful I had! The Chicken and Waffles, was delectable! Nicely crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside, making for a satisfying, savory bite each time. Whether you're looking for a spot to go with friends or a date night, this is a good one!

Sausage Gravy Poutine

A Top Chef fan and was happy to visit Chef Justin Sutherland's restaurant. It's much more spacious than I thought with a beautiful bar in the middle. Service was great, and really enjoyed the cocktail Sage Against the Machine and had two of those! So refreshing! We started with the sausage gravy poutine, and it's a bit different than other poutines, but it was really tasty! I do wish the potato wedges were smaller, but the sausage gravy was tasty. We ordered the three meat platter of ribs, brisket, and pulled pork and sides of mac n cheese and the cucumber salad. The ribs were tender, fall of the bone. Very flavorful. The pulled pork was incredibly salty. The brisket was just so so. The mac and cheese, probably should've known, but it was not very good. It was incredibly dry. The cucumber salad complimented the heavy salty meats well though.

Classic Cubano

I've been wanting to try this restaurant since the ownerhad been on Top Chef. Initially, our directions brought us to their old location in lower town. So, fyi- use Google maps to get there, not your car's navigation system! . When we finally found it, parking on the street was open and available. We were warmly greeted by the hostess. Our server, Amanda was also very friendly and helpful. The food was VERY good! I had the Cubano, which was delicious. My cousin and partner in crime also enjoyed her sliders. We were there for their happy hour menu but now that we know how to find it, we will be back for their brunch or dinner menu!

Maybe the best fried chicken in Minnesota. Chicken N Waffles

Would I put the brisket at Handsome on Hog on par with the best you'll find in Texas? Absolutely not. I'm not even sure it's the best I've had in Minnesota (that's Firebox Deli). Would I put the fried chicken at Handsome Hog on par with the best you'll find in Texas or the deep south? Absolutely. The chicken is exceptional. The sides are exceptional. Honestly, everything on the menu except the brisket is exceptional. I've dined her for dinner and for brunch on the weekend. The grits are among the best I've ever had. When it comes to service and the food, there's not a thing I'd complain about (as long as I don't order the brisket). Parking is another story, but that's not really something to hold against an urban restaurant.

Maddison C.

The service is amazing accompanied by the food including the best chicken and waffles, grits, and collard greens I have ever had!

Returned for brunch another day and my original sentiments remain the same. The food is just lackluster as a whole. Nothing impressive at all

Just as good as everyone says..wish they had a location closer to me. So good will come back

Smoked creme brûlée

I love the Handsome Hog! I just love the cozy, " upscale living room" kinda feel to it. You can show up in jeans, a nice dress, or a suit and fit right in. The service is top notch, our server was super attentive, per usual, checking on us, answering questions, grabbing us requests, and timing desert, etc requests perfectly. We looooved our food! Most of the table ordered chicken and waffles and all of them were over the moon. I got my 2nd choice, spare ribs, they were pretty good, but my corn muffin, the roasted cauliflower, and mac n cheese were epic - especially the roasted cauliflower! The sides saved the meal, I took home the ribs and my husband ate them. I wanted steak, which they took off the menu, so I thought brisket, nope, sold out! Welp, I know when I go back I won't get spare ribs ever again. Another save besides the sides was my second choice dessert, since peach pie wasn't available, the smoked creme brûlée was AMAZEBALLS! That gets my review back up to a 4 from a 3. The reason they get a 4 and not a 5 is that they cut my favorite things from the menu because it was "too much for the kitchen to keep up with" and now they run out of the other stuff I really like sometimes! This last time we went I was craving steak which is no longer on the menu or at least brisket and they were out of it already, it was only 6pm! Really?? I'm sure it's because there are now only a few big meat entrees on the menu now instead of the plethora of choices they used to have! Also, no more peach pie :( :( :( Put more back on the menu please Handsome Hog, like a filet mignon? Something meaty but not as heavy as a choice?

It's a really cozy moody interior, with *no big lights* aka great low lighting and comfy seating options. When we went, there were just a few other parties there so pretty quiet. But, we were able to order and drink one drink during the ~45 minutes we had. They closed up shop promptly at 10pm. They had a classics and a "rumors" section of the menu. I didn't think the signature drinks were overly unique, with classics like Paper Plane making that menu side. I had a pomegranate mojito which was good! Consensus was that the cocktails were good not exceptional, especially for the $16-17 price point. We ordered churros for the table which were a table favorite! I wouldn't go out of my way to come here again, but we enjoyed our time and could see this being a good option if you lived in the neighborhood and don't mind the early close hours.

I have been here two times in the last week and lemme tell ya.. this is quite the spot. I do suggest making a reservation because everytime I go here it is popping! What a vibey place, the lights aren't too bright, it gives a hip, fun, light energy and is not too pretentious but has INCREDIBLE FOOD AND DRINKS. Right now, one of their specials is whitefish toast.. if you enjoy fish at all, you need this. The fish is light and fresh, they put fresh dill on top and it is placed on top of some toasted sourdough bread perfectly. The fish is flavorful, a lil earthy and I feel as if there are capers or olives in in the fish mixture, whatever it is is fire! The burrata, beets, and citrus is a nice lovely, fresh, light app, the burrata is perfection with the beets and fresh, juicy citrus, drizzled with some oil and random pieces of garlic mixed in, YUM. I suggest ordering bread on the side with this one! The wings here are a staple and always delish. Crispy, hot, and coated perfectly in a light sweet chili sauce.. they hit the spot everytime. The housemade ranch is a perfect dipper. The other day I tried the chorizo and scallops... oh my goodness gracious.. it was a lil spicy and creamy with the bean puree and the scallops were buttery, light and divine! 10 outta 10 would do again. Finally, got the goat cheesecake, gluten free ginger snap crust with poached pears. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE I want this now and in every lifetime! The cheesecake was light, yet decadent, deep, creamy with a light, unassuming flavor. The crust was delicious and the poached pears added that perfect fruit component. I got Liam as my server both times, he was helpful, attentive, had good suggestions when asked questions and didn't interrupt at all, amazing! This is the spot for any occasion!

It is in the Mac-Groveland neighborhood so there is ample street parking nearby if you turn on any of the side streets. The restaurant does get busy at dinner, so I recommend making a reservation ahead of time. They have many unique options for cocktails and mocktails. I opted for the Slaychel which is a non-alcoholic beverage that I think of as an elevated mimosa. It is fruity, slightly tart, and delicious! The service was great! Our water was frequently refilled and never got empty, and our server asked about any allergies and dietary restrictions before we ordered. They were able to modify menu items to fit the different dietary restrictions! Two people in our party (including myself) are vegetarians and one member is gluten-free and also doesn't consume much dairy or eggs. They were able to serve the patatas bravas with the egg on the side and the grilled asparagus with the egg and cheese on the side so we were able to all share the starters. The patatas bravas were wonderful! The potatoes are perfectly crispy but still fluffy. The tomato sauce was slightly smokey and had a very slight kick (think Minnesota spice) and it balanced out well with the creamy tomato. If you're only going to try one appetizer, this is the one to try! The asparagus was also nice. The salsa verde had a slight kick (a bit more than the tomato sauce from the patatas bravas, but not super spicy. Still Minnesota level of spice). The shallots also added a nice crispy texture to the dish! The egg really stood out in this dish, with its runny yolk and batter coating. There were a lot of nice elements and textures. As for pastas, I split the Spaghetti and Radiatore with a friend. The Radiatore was nutty and tangy, and the serving size was generous. I enjoyed it, but I would order the Spaghetti over it any day! I don't even know how to describe the Spaghetti and do it justice. It was creamy, cheesy, delicious. Our server said it was a staff favorite, and I understand why. If you're looking for a vegetarian option, go with this one!! Even if you aren't a vegetarian, give it a try. It's so classic, and it's done so well. For dessert: they give free churros when you're dining in! They are served warm with a chocolate drizzle. We also ordered the Honey Cake which we enjoyed a lot! The cake itself was light, like a mousse. There was some crunch from the hazelnut praline and honeycomb toffee pieces. It was nutty and sweet but not overly sweet. It was a perfect way to finish off the meal! Estelle was delicious and the service was great! I can't wait to come back!

I went here with my twin sister, her husband, her husbands 2 brothers and one of his brother's fiance who were in town. All are foodies. The food is just...awesome! Presentation is completely unique, including flaming drinks, an assortment of vessels for the dishes to accommodate the dish with an interesting flare without compromising ease of consuming or taste. Patatas bravas, tequenos, and rompe colchon were excellent. I mean mouth wateringly amazing. Shrimp in the rompe colchon was cooked PERFECTLY and the balance of the sour leche de tigre and mango made the dish interesting for the palate. Broccolini side dish was also cooked perfectly and the cheese foam gave a unique twist to the side dish. I ordered the bollitos pelones and OH MY GOODNESS. Think huge fried (but not greasy) ball of corn dough (like tamale but grains not so fine) stuffed with braised lamb and swimming in a dark, curry and spiced sauce. It was SOOOO GOOD and nothing like I'd ever had before. I also tried the pasta with rabbit and UMAMI! it was tasty. Also unique flavor that I cannot quite identify and the sauce to meat to pasta ratio was perfect. LOVED this experience and will 10000000% go back!
