This is my favorite restaurant in Chicago. I love that they run specials, I love the variety in their food, and I love the atmosphere. My favorites are the Huevos Diablos for brunch or the black bean tostadas for dinner, but there are so many things that I like on the menu that I don't always eat those. i'm really glad i got to try this place out! there is only street parking, so it may be difficult to park on a busy day. the bar itself is on the smaller side and has 2 gender neutral restrooms near the back, so if it was crowded i could see there being a wait or something; however, the service was good and the all food came out pretty quickly in my opinion. they were also very clear when it came to vegan/nonvegan dishes and what contained cheese and didn't contain cheese, which i heavily appreciated. the first item we ordered was the bbq tot mac (weekly special), which came with bbq pulled mushrooms, tater tots, vegan dream mac, crispy fried onions, and pickles. i'm definitely glad we ordered this; it's probably one of my favorite vegan mac n cheeses now. the sloppy joe sandwich and nashville hot chicken sandwich were also both tasty; however, the side of collard greens was a bit greasy for my taste. if ordering either of these sandwiches, keep in mind that they are very messy and may take considerable effort to eat! i found the nashville hot chicken to be a little less messy than the sloppy joe, but the sandwiches were both delicious enough that i'd totally order them again anyways. the current pie, pie my darling cake was chocolate hazelnut, and i was beyond impressed! the chocolate cake itself was moist and had a deep flavor without being too rich. the frosting was surprisingly not too rich either; it wasn't one of those cakes where you only eat the cake and leave all the frosting. the hazelnuts gave the cake a good crunch as well. overall really happy with my visit,& i will definitely be back. amazing food! read more

This place is absolutely amazing! On our week-long vacation here in Chicago, we had to come here twice! Sad I didn't get a photo of our dinner, but we started with the Chili Cheese Fries (w/ vegan cheese) and they were better than I could've ever imagined. The meat eaters at the table said they tasted just like regular chili cheese fries! For my entree, I got the Buffalo "Chicken" Wrap with a side of the Vegan Dream Mac. Both were unbelievable!!! We decided we needed to try the breakfast menu as well so we ordered burritos for pick-up. The place was PACKED both times we were there so it is clearly loved by all! I got the vegan breakfast burrito and it was the best one I've ever had-- it came with this delicious salsa verde that I wish I could take home with me! I'm not vegan or vegetarian and still really enjoyed my meal. The bbq Benedict is a brunch special and it has pulled oyster mushrooms in bbq sauce, jalapeño slaw, avocado, and vegan hollandaise on top of an English muffin. You can choose between poached eggs or blackened tofu. I was surprised by how much I liked the oyster mushrooms, it looked just like pulled pork. Mimosas are also $4 on Saturdays! Can't wait to try the lunch/dinner options next time. The only complaint we had was the table we sat at right next to the window on the step was very wobbly and so our drinks spilled and it took awhile to get napkins. I came across this place while looking for vegan/vegetarian options for a few friends coming into town. We had to drive from West Loop & in hindsight now that I've spent quite some time in the city, there were definitely better options. While I like the crowd & general atmosphere of the place, it was certainly a little too dark for my taste (but it is a bar so what would you expect). I feel imposter syndrome because I had this place recommended by a good friend & all the reviews to the side of my screen are raving about this place. My partner lives in Chicago so I visit fairly often, and we find ourselves at Handlebar at least twice every time I am in town! Their patio is absolutely adorable and has a very laid back atmosphere. Reasonably priced food and drinks along with friendly and quick service. I love the array of vegan options, though I do wish there were more gluten free options available. However, the nashville hot sandwich and vegan mac is hands down worth it, I get it nearly every time I'm here!! Honorable mention for the vegan chili cheese fries as well. While this was just a couple's night, it would be a nice place to hang with a group of friends. However, instead of just fried, meaty bar food, the Handlebar has some tasty vegetarian/vegan treats. We tried the vegan sloppy joe and the buffalo seitan wrap. Both food items really hit the spot. The sloppy joe had the right consistency and a nice flavor served on a pretzel roll. Visiting Chicago for a few days and found this place in wicker park. Food was good bar food with lots of vegan options which was the main reason we checked it out. We went around 2:30 on a Thursday and wasn't too busy. Cool little dive bar feel to it with interesting art on the walls. We had the fried pickles and fried avocado grilled cheese both with the vegan option. Would like to come back and check out more of their vegan options and definitely recommend any vegan or non vegan to check it out. Fried Avocado Tacos: WOW - these tacos are another level. You get 3 in total with a side of brown rice. The fried avocado is delicious. It also comes with refried beans and some lettuce and cherry tomatoes. This is my favorite menu item. 2.) Nachos - I don't normally care for nachos, but these are great. My omelette was pretty tasty and since I'm a huge sucker for mushrooms, it was right up my alley. However, the vegan diablos made me want to switch my plates .. the sauce in this dish was so flavorful & I highly recommend! We sat at a high top for three and got waters before looking over the menu. The drink menu had dried food one it which was a bit gross but otherwise the table and sliver ware were clean. I ordered the tortas appetizer with cashew cheese, and my friends got the Bloody Mary and sloppy joe. The Bloody Mary was tarter than I like, almost too much pickle or lime juice. It did come with a fried pickle though! The tortas were thick and handmade with a solid amount of black beans and cheese on the side. The salsa verde was spicy and I was not prepared for it but the overall flavor was good. I really liked the sloppy joe. It was sweeter than ones I've made but it was done with jackfruit and the string fried weren't super oily. We actually dipped the fries in the cashew cheese for an added flavor combo. Overall it was a good spot to eat at. I'd want to come back and try a few more items as the flavors seem a bit on the extreme but it's a good veggie/vegan spot. read more
