After a week of juicing and water only, I was more than ready for my first solid meal. I came across Elephant + Vine, a vegan comfort/fast food spot at 2315 N. Lincoln Ave., and between the menu and the name (yes, the elephant caught my attention), I knew I had to check it out. There's plenty of street parking in the area, I went on a Sunday, so meters were free. The interior is bright, green, and inviting, with lots of seating and great natural light coming in from the front windows. There's also outdoor seating, but it was a bit too cold the day we went, so we stayed inside. Service is counter-style, and the staff was very knowledgeable about the menu. It's fairly simple, but still fun and satisfying. I ordered an Impossible burger, tater tots, and a strawberry almond milk smoothie. My friend got fries, so I was able to try both. After over 40 days without fried food, I was especially excited for the tots and they did not disappoint. Overall, the food was good and solid across the board. Nothing that completely blew me away, but definitely satisfying. If you're vegan or vegetarian and craving a classic burger experience, this is a great option. The smoothie was good as well, though I personally prefer fruit-forward smoothies with lighter juices, so the almond milk base wasn't quite my favorite, but it still complemented the meal nicely. Yes, please. Elephant + Vine is a vegan paradise. They use soy in their fake meats and milkshakes, but allergy friends, don't worry. The black bean burger is a great option and they use canola oil for fries and tots. I had to have this Door Dashed and my driver was double dipping and dropping people off (I watched him through the window for 20 minutes driving around, etc.) so the food was a little cold, but still very worth it. I got the elephant burger with the black bean patty. My non-vegan friend described it as Thanksgiving dinner - good like stuffing. Their menu consists of burgers, salads, wraps, shakes, and more. I was very interested in trying out their Buffalo Chik'n and Korean BBQ Chik'n Burgers ($12 each) since I am still on the search for the best of the best. Both of the sandwiches were delicious with the buffalo being the standout. We also tried their Cauliflower Wings ($9) which resembled little nuggets that can be dipped in a sweet chili sauce. The batter was not heavy at all and it tasted great with the burgers. Their milkshakes were also fantastic. I had the Sea Salt Caramel Shake and that is one to satisfy anyone's sweet tooth. It took me a few hours to actually finish it since it was quite thick, but it definitely made it worthwhile. On a cold and blistery day I discovered this hidden gem when scoping out vegetarian places near one of the hospitals I work at. I stumbled upon this suggestion (via yelp!) and decided to place a pick up order. I went with one Ele Impossible burger, one Ele Black Bean burger, "Cauliflower Wings" with half buffalo and half sweet chili sauce, and topped everything off wiith an order of sweet potato fries. The pick up process could have been a bit easier, as they are located at a busy intersection near Lincoln, Fullerton, and Halsted. However, it wasn't until I had already street parked that I discovered they validate the garage across the street. Oh well. Out of this entire medley of veggie goodness, I fell hard for the cauliflower with sweet chili. It had a distinguishing sweetness, but with a spicy kick. The buffalo choice wasn't the tastiest, but tasty enough. The sweet potato fries were hot and delicious with a home-made taste. I actually enjoyed dipping them into the ranch that was provided with the cauliflower wings. The Impossible was on the smaller side, and there is a notable difference when comparing it to the black bean one. However, I still preferred that over their home-made black bean burger. It wasn't that it wasn't good, it was just a bit bland for my liking. I did enjoy this place so much that I did return when I went back to work into the city a week or two later. The cauli wings were crispy and delicious. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the food and menu. The restaurant was very clean and quiet. This place is absolute heaven! I simply can't believe that vegan gluten-free food can taste this incredible. My omnivore husband is excited to return - it's THAT good! I have probably not eaten a real burrito in like 10 years - and finally got to enjoy one here because they can sub gluten-free wrap. We also got the Korean fried chicken because they have gluten-free bun (yes, actual bun not just slices of frozen Udi bread) and can sub the soy-based patty for a mushroom-based one. The prices are very reasonable for the product they are providing. Our service experience was a positive. AVOID! I have gone in store three times and two were a bad experience, the other was still below average. For starters, this is a place where they strongly push for self ordering at a kiosk, but still ask for a tip when you pay. Two out of the three times I've encountered rude staff (the same person each time), I suspect it was either a manager or owner. The items on the menu are overpriced for what you get + long wait times. As other reviews say, beware of smaller portions if you order through a delivery service vs direct. Shady business practice. I recently visited chicago for the first time with my mom and partner. I am vegetarian but my mom and partner are not, we decided to try these plant based burgers and they were SO amazing! I have not had a burger in so long but this tasted more amazing than any burger I have ever had before! I only got a Togo order today , so I'm definitely excited to see what the atmosphere is like when I visit. I got the mammoth burger with the black bean patty. The flavor was out of this world!! I think a lot had to do with the pickle and sauce. They toasted the bun nicely which held a crunch even through delivery. I would suggest (if you're hungry) to get the double patty. I am Celiac/gluten free and diary free for the past 8 years - not by choice. I've been to elephant and vine 10 times now and feel a strong love hate relationship with them. The bean burger with gluten free bread is 5 stars, and I have never gotten sick from it. It's a healthy fast food experience. Amazing. The gluten free burrito is the problem. Half the time I got it there is not a problem and the other half I got violently ill immediately after eating it. Suffering now as I write this. One time mistake happens but this is now at the point it's reoccurring, and not ok. My guess is sometimes they give me the gluten tortilla and other times they give me the gluten free tortilla. Unfortunately, with my gluten allergy, I am sick for about 10 -14 days if I touch gluten, and sometimes it is life threatening. My diet is very limited being able to have an option of a gluten-free tortilla at a restaurant is fantastic, but I will not risk it anymore here and just get the burger. I like the tortilla better than the burger when it's gluten free. It's not worth the risk and I'm totally sad about it. I write in every comment Celiac and gluten free on my order. I even thought about asking them for the gluten tortilla and the gluten-free one so I can study it to tell the difference and make sure my order is safe. I think the color of the gluten-free tortilla is a little bit different than the gluten one. Plus a slight texture difference. One other thing to note is the burritos have been very cold the last two times I ordered them. I go home and reheat them in the oven. The shakes they have only offer a soy milk option. Can you please add Almond or Cashew milk option? I would choose nut milk over soy. The sauces are great. The elephant sauce tastes like it has vinegar, so I cannot have that one. Yesterday they forgot one of my sauces, so overall not a good order. A meal with a shake is about $28. My average order amount is about $120 to get food for my family. It's a descent amount to hope not to get sick. I cannot find an ingredient list for their food. If you are catering to gluten free and diary free people we like to see the list it's reassuring. I usually only cook at home unless I'm going to an upscale/Michelin star restaurant because their employees are very well trained and paid to take allergies so seriously. I understand it's a risk going anywhere else. My recommendation would be to train the staff up on cross contamination and the impact of giving a gluten tortilla to a celiac client. Maybe make an area for the gluten-free food to be made, so you don't mix up the tortillas. Compensate your employees at a higher rate since they are dealing with more complexities than fast food restaurants having clients with allergies. I saw there is the flagship location in Evanston. I am tempted to go there. I only go to the LP location. Overall, I want to love this spot. It has great potential, but needs to work out some basic protocols and processes. I mean if you cannot give a celiac customer a gluten-free tortilla when it's written all over the order that tells me you have a major management issue, bad system, or your staff is unhappy and not paying attention. Another thought is hire a chef that is celiac. They will never make the mistake of giving a celiac customer a gluten burrito. They understand the impact. read more

The food here was excellent! I can't remember the last time I found gluten-free AND vegan "chicken" nuggets. They did a great job labeling dietary restrictions on the menu. I got the buffalo sauce on the cauli wings with a side of vegan ranch and it was one of the best casual meals I have had. The interior was clean and minimalistic with a small live plant wall and other healthy houseplants. I would do anything to have more locations grow from this restaurant! The only thing I feel like I have to note on is the workers. Our cashier was awesome - he took our orders fast and went right back to stocking and cleaning the restaurant when he had free time. There was also a girl working hard, cleaning the outside dining room and moving chairs around. However, there were two workers in the kitchen area who were on their phones and talking together, leaving all the work to the other two. Unfortunately, I saw no name tags. We went to Elephant + Vine for dinner because my friends who are vegan were visiting and asked if we could go. I had never heard of Elephant + Vine nor had I ever been to an all-vegan restaurant so I agreed to go, but was skeptical on how the food would taste. I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious everything was! I ordered the portohouse melt wrap and added tofu. I do wish the wrap had more inside it because some bites were a little tortilla heavy. Others in my group ordered the Baja burger, Buffalo bowl, cauli wings, and strawberry bliss smoothie. No one had any complaints regarding their food! The restaurant itself is pretty casual. You order and pay at a kiosk at the front and someone will come deliver your order to your table. We could tell that they are still working out the kinks when it comes to delivering food to tables.
