Totally 100% vegan, but I heard they were closing before the end of November. We came here on a Friday night around 5pm. They do allow children and have live shows at night. I got a beer, Maplewood IPA, and vegan nachos with "beef". They were very wet, they also had mixed greens on top which were nice but weird. For my main meal I got a fried chicken sandwich which had tempeh as the protein. It was very thick and dense but tasty. It came with French fries. He started to gaslighting me that i was arguing(trying to make a scene)when I attempted to educate him on the reward program. I really kinda like a few things I On my 1st visit before I left the drink, I forgot to alert him that I wanted light ice so My drink, he mumbled that all he could do was pour out some of the ice. So that was very cold of him. He was rushing for no reason. I also witnessed the same crappy service without another young lady, maybe some woman hurt him, and he's taking it out on us women :( The service is a concern it makes the entire experience extremely cold and not worth the overpriced items. the vegan deep dish was such a gem to find! i visited chicago so naturally i wanted to try their famed deep dish but as a girl who doesn't enjoy american dairy i needed an alternative. kitchen 17 was the only place that offered something remotely close to what i was looking for. i was pleasantly surprised. i will say that its primarily a bar so i just came in to pick up my order and there was only one guy behind the bar who could assist me and he had a lot going on so he wasn't super attentive. no napkins, no utensils, just handed me the box. i ordered the pepperoni (which im so grateful was seitan and not soy) i added some jalapeños which appeared to be green peppers but overall satisfied. also got the buffalo breaded cauliflower which they don't toss for you they just give you the sauce. it was good and shockingly reheated very well. i'd go back but not for the weird vibes inside this place. not quite my vibe but the food i could try again. read more

This place is so fun! Came for a couple shows (one of which I had an act in). The Fallen Log part of things is a really lovely venue for small shows. Great stage space, nifty little "backstage" area to the side of the stage for performers. Beautiful tech including these awesome tube lights. Just awesome, I'd love to come back again soon! The food is vegan -- I am not. But I enjoyed much of what I tried. My favorite is the bbq cauliflower "wings," which is a very hearty portion. The smores cookie is FIRE! Dang I want one now... The staff is very chill and friendly. Jaden was really cool both of the days the show took over. Yeah, I went back here for lunch, and now I feel bad leaving my earlier review up without further comment. The pizza was somewhere between mediocre and awful. Damp cardboard-tasting crust, cheap tomato sauce, big undercooked slabs of seitan pepperoni. The sweet potato fries were soggy and stuck together in clumps. I swear it wasn't like this before. Going into this place was a little different with strange pictures on the walls and creepy decor. Kinda like the place was decorated for Halloween and something was ready to pop out at you to scare the daylights out of you. The bathrooms are even creepier. It was dim in there, lit by a bluish black light and creepy paintings on the wall. With that said there were also familiar things mixed in there like pinball machines which were free to play. At the bar area I noticed an old video game from my childhood (Mega Man) playing on the screen. They gave us a controller and we started playing as we waited. There were also a plethora of games there to kill the time as you waited. This was awesome as the decor mentioned earlier wasnt so bad when your focus was on other things. By the way, the staff was super friendly and noticed a little refrigerated section that was all vegan desserts. We tried the turtle cheesecake and salted caramel brownie. Oh!!!! This were the most delicious treats!!!! i forgot to take pictures. Now on to the pizza! The whole reason we came here was to finally try a vegan chicago pizza...and they did not disappoint! Full disclosure, I'm neither vegan nor vegetarian. But I was vegetarian for a few years, so I'm not opposed. We came here with a visitor who only eats plant based. I had their homemade veggie burger, my guests shared a pizza. We also had the fried tofu as an appetizer. The tofu was amazing! The burger was very good. The pizza was okay - it might be amazing for a vegetarian, but as a meat eater it was just barely okay. There is a good beer selection, as well as other drinks. The place is cute and quirky and fun to visit. You order everything at the bar, but even so the service was friendly and fast. Apparently they have good live music, but we were not there at that time. Overall, this is a very solid choice for vegetarians in your group, and you meat eaters will find something good too. The place was dark and gloomy--I should've looked at the photos that other patrons attached before agreeing on this place. The food presentation was decent, but the taste of the food was awful. We started with appetizers--buffalo cauliflower and cheese spinach artichoke. The former wasn't bad, but the latter was tasteless. No flavor whatsoever. My lunch mate who is not vegan, but will entertain certain dishes here and there, absolutely hated his meal, which I believe was some sort of faux cheesesteak made with Seitan. I tasted a piece of the "meat" at his urging and it WAS disgusting with a bizarre smoky aftertaste. I have had Seitan before and it's never had that bizarre taste. He asked the waiter/bartender for bleu cheese and the guy says annoyingly it's a vegan place, they don't have bleu cheese. There IS plant based bleu cheese--crumbles AND dressing. I have them both in my fridge. I had a "pizza burger", which had too much marinara sauce, making it messy, and the bun was too small. I ended up eating it with a knife and fork. Entirely too many fries were on both plates, which was a waste of food and possible distraction from how unpalatable the cheesesteak was and how messy the pizza burger was to eat. The fries were spilling onto the table. Then, the waiter/bartender, did not ask if we needed anything after our food was served--didn't ask if we wanted more drinks, water refill...nothing. The place was empty, except for my friend and I, so he wasn't busy. Lastly, I see from another review that the owner responded to a reviewer with defensiveness and truthfully, words I wouldn't expect an entrepreneur to publicly project. Let's not do that over here.. Hands down, this place has such a chill vibe. Board games, pinball machines, tv with Seinfeld playing... just so cool. At Kitchen 17, I experienced my first time having vegan deep dish pizza--I'll admit I was a bit bummed about that the small amount of toppings on the Fully Loaded Pizza and the consistency of the cheese (or dough?) seemed rather grainy. The popcorn tofu bites were yummy, just a little hard. Our server was helpful and happy to answer our questions. Where do I even start! I wish I lived here because I would come all the time. When we walked in we were the only people there which at first worried us but it ended up being the best dinner of our vacation. The food was amazing. We got the "frychos" which were like loaded fries and it was the probably one of the most flavorful and fun vegan dishes I've ever had. Ofc we also had to get the vegan deep dish and it was also really good. Since we were the only ones there we chatted quite a bit with the bartender and he was super friendly. We ended up putting a movie on the bar tv and watching that while we ate. They also had boardgames and free pinball and we played battleship while waiting for our pizza. If you have the chance to check this place out, you definitely should!! The bartender said they were usually busier because it's also a concert venue, but it was a nice day so we think people were going places they could eat outside. I had never experienced a fake dive bar before. The bathroom had cringey phrases and tags written in the wall. It was kinda entertaining, kinda embarrassing. I decided to give Kitchen 17 a shot after reading about them in a vegan food blog, and seeing them on the Happy Cow app. I was excited to try the home of the original vegan Chicago style deep dish pizza. We ordered the Buffalo Cauliflower Wings which were absolutely phenomenal, and I'd totally order those again! We ordered a traditional Chicago Style Deep Dish which had sausage and pepperoni. I had mixed feelings about it. Overall it was good, but I was hoping for more. The crust was great, and what I expected, and y'all nailed the flavor on the sausage! However, I didn't really get anything that resembled the taste of pepperoni, and I thought the liquid like cheese was an odd choice, and just not the texture I'm looking for when eating pizza. The service was extremely fast, and friendly. The atmosphere was very unique. Although the building was uncomfortably warm. I ordered the chicken Parmesan sandwich with 3 slices of pizza to go because I was rushing to catch a flight back home. This location is 20 minutes from O'Hare which is pretty convenient. The pizza was decent but the star of the show was the dessert. The Twix was heavenly. The silky chocolate and gooey caramel took me back to middle school. It was so good I literally moaned as I nibbled on it to saver the experience. The strawberry cheesecake is top tier as well. I've been eating it slowly for the past 2 days because I've never experienced a graham cracker crust, so buttery and delicious. Hipness to the core is putting it mildly for this all vegan pizza joint located in Avondale. It has an entirely plant based menu, so no need to ask if anything has cheese or any dairy. Kitchen 17 of course is best known for pizza. Besides that there's also appetizers like cauliflower wings and other vegetables that are substitutes for meat. The prices are pretty high for a pizza compared to typical pizza places, but similar to other higher end gourmet pizzas places, meaning it's high but not outrageously. Avondale has a lot of hip places on Diversey and you can hit up this while around. It's across from Ravinia Brewery for an example. The food at Kitchen 17 is defined by pizza. Also there's tons of appetizers. There's stuff like the Macaroni And Cheese, but not real cheese of course. It's about $16 for a personal size, which is actually kind of big. These come with a marinara and the vegan mozzarella, and you get a choice of any two toppings. Last time in here we got it with giardiniera and seitan bacon. The giardiniera is like getting a few toppings. Be sure to get more than just a pizza if you can. It's kind of expensive so maybe the next time try the cauliflower wings or nachos for another option. The pizza could've used a little bit more flavor in the cheese-it was just a bit bland. The cauliflower and fries as well were just lacking....something. The ranch that was served with the cauliflower was very watery and oily by the time it got to us, which was a bit weird. Almost too quick with regards to the time the deep dish pie made its debut on our table. It didn't look like any deep dish I've had before. Not being from here, perhaps I'm seeing a local style that I'm unfamiliar with? The dough almost looked like pie dough instead of the usual semolina or cormeal crusted dough I'm familiar with back on the Best Coast. Was it still good? Hell yeah! While the crust wasn't a highlight, the sauce, cheese and toppings were. I appreciated that everything was mostly made in-house. They (unofficially) give a free slice of cake for those celebrating their special day. It's great too if you are full or have places to be since it's in a grab 'n go container already pre sliced. Cake was good but the icing was toothe achingly sweet. Not the end of the world as you can scrape it off of you're not a fan or prefer not to get the diabeetus. We had the Big K burger with fries and Gyro, very tasty with just the right amount of sauces (I recommend asking them for an extra side of vegan ranch dressing for the Gyro!) and flavor. We also tried a vegan salted caramel brownie that tasted pretty good (nice touch of sweet and salty), and it's great that everything served is VEGAN! I didn't find the crust to be particularly tasty. If you're a fan of marinara, you might want to give this a try. (Maybe that's the point of Chicago deep dish, I'm not sure haha). They also have a refrigerator with premade desserts, which I was super excited by. I ordered the turtle cheesecake, and it was a yummy combination of chocolate and nuts. It was super sweet, though, so I wouldn't recommend it if you prefer lighter desserts. In terms of ambiance, I personally thought that the heavy metal music was too loud. The bartender with the blonde hair and crusty ass beanie whose attitude was worse than the skinny jeans he was wearing. He was reluctant and rude to do things like grabbing a straw and a to-go box when our group had no idea where these things were. When placing orders he was too busy playing candy crush on his phone to even look at me when ordering and continuously kept trying to walk away as if i wasn't still talking to him. His bad attitude and crappy demeanor had us as customers feeling like a burden. i've been meaning to go to kitchen 17 for a very long time; however, it was never convenient for me to go and i decided to just go out of my way one day to try it. 100% worth it! i will be back. i ordered bbq cauliflower wings (because i heard they were AMAZING), mac n cheese, and a traditional deep dish pizza to test out the waters. the cauliflower wings were genuinely some of the best i've ever had. the breading stayed on the wing and the bbq sauce was delicious! i liked how they weren't super soggy despite being soaked in sauce, and the pieces of cauliflower were large and well-cooked. the mac n cheese was also pretty tasty; i want to try it in a pizza next time i go! speaking of pizza, the traditional deep dish pizza was amazing! i was introducing my friend to deep dish pizza, and this was a wonderful example. the crust was thick, crispy, and held up very well against the pizza fillings. the seitan pepperoni was my favorite! i saw they had a massive case of desserts, and while i already had plans, i'll definitely be sure to get some next time. the service was good, but there was definitely no rush to get the check. i like the atmosphere of the vegan metal bar, and the walls were decorated with many interesting little things to keep my attention. there was always something new to look at! i went at a time where it wasn't packed, but i imagine it would probably be on the louder side. read more
