This place is so fun! Came for a couple shows (one of which I had an act in). The Fallen Log part of things is a really lovely venue for small shows. Great stage space, nifty little "backstage" area to the side of the stage for performers. Beautiful tech including these awesome tube lights. Just awesome, I'd love to come back again soon! The food is vegan -- I am not. But I enjoyed much of what I tried. My favorite is the bbq cauliflower "wings," which is a very hearty portion. The smores cookie is FIRE! Dang I want one now... The staff is very chill and friendly. Jaden was really cool both of the days the show took over. They've got some board games and such, a real cozy vibe as though they mashed a bar and a cafe together and strapped some Birkrnstocks on. I love it!
Small place inside and dark lighting. I m not big fan of dark lights in the dark winter outside.Yoyou please order at bar once you made selection. Person at bar was helpful in making selection. Beer - 3/5 - not cold Hot latte with spicy chocolate- 1/5- watery consistency and not hot. Gyro sandwitch with cheese fries- 3/5- fries was the best part. Cheese is not same as I have tasted her in the past Full loaded pan pizza - 2/5 - lots of stuff on the thick pizza but lacks seasoning and spice.
Yeah, I went back here for lunch, and now I feel bad leaving my earlier review up without further comment. The pizza was somewhere between mediocre and awful. Damp cardboard-tasting crust, cheap tomato sauce, big undercooked slabs of seitan pepperoni. The sweet potato fries were soggy and stuck together in clumps. I swear it wasn't like this before. I don't know, maybe I just caught them on an off day.
Going into this place was a little different with strange pictures on the walls and creepy decor. Kinda like the place was decorated for Halloween and something was ready to pop out at you to scare the daylights out of you. The bathrooms are even creepier. It was dim in there, lit by a bluish black light and creepy paintings on the wall. With that said there were also familiar things mixed in there like pinball machines which were free to play. At the bar area I noticed an old video game from my childhood (Mega Man) playing on the screen. They gave us a controller and we started playing as we waited. There were also a plethora of games there to kill the time as you waited. This was awesome as the decor mentioned earlier wasnt so bad when your focus was on other things. By the way, the staff was super friendly and noticed a little refrigerated section that was all vegan desserts. We tried the turtle cheesecake and salted caramel brownie. Oh!!!! This were the most delicious treats!!!! i forgot to take pictures. Now on to the pizza! The whole reason we came here was to finally try a vegan chicago pizza...and they did not disappoint! This was so delectable and savory. I forst tried the Jalapeno popper which I was curious to try this weird combo but it bursted with flavor! Heavy on the awesome sauce and home made cheez the way I like it Its a deep dish. Know what to expect. Very filling You gotta try this one. So when I ate The traditional one it wasnt as tasty to me after eating the unique Jalapeno popper. Kinda like driving your dependable satisfying honda...then driving a Porsche and enjoying that unique experience and then going back to your good old honda after. This place is a must try when in Chicago and wanting some plant-based chicago style food! You will not be disappointed.
Hands down, this place has such a chill vibe. Board games, pinball machines, tv with Seinfeld playing... just so cool. At Kitchen 17, I experienced my first time having vegan deep dish pizza--I'll admit I was a bit bummed about that the small amount of toppings on the Fully Loaded Pizza and the consistency of the cheese (or dough?) seemed rather grainy. The popcorn tofu bites were yummy, just a little hard. Our server was helpful and happy to answer our questions. I'd like to come back and try some different dishes, though I sadly was not super impressed with the food I ordered this visit.
I decided to give Kitchen 17 a shot after reading about them in a vegan food blog, and seeing them on the Happy Cow app. I was excited to try the home of the original vegan Chicago style deep dish pizza. We ordered the Buffalo Cauliflower Wings which were absolutely phenomenal, and I'd totally order those again! We ordered a traditional Chicago Style Deep Dish which had sausage and pepperoni. I had mixed feelings about it. Overall it was good, but I was hoping for more. The crust was great, and what I expected, and y'all nailed the flavor on the sausage! However, I didn't really get anything that resembled the taste of pepperoni, and I thought the liquid like cheese was an odd choice, and just not the texture I'm looking for when eating pizza. The service was extremely fast, and friendly. The atmosphere was very unique. Although the building was uncomfortably warm. All of that being said though I'd go back and try some other variations of pizza as well as other menu items.
Hipness to the core is putting it mildly for this all vegan pizza joint located in Avondale. It has an entirely plant based menu, so no need to ask if anything has cheese or any dairy. Kitchen 17 of course is best known for pizza. Besides that there's also appetizers like cauliflower wings and other vegetables that are substitutes for meat. The prices are pretty high for a pizza compared to typical pizza places, but similar to other higher end gourmet pizzas places, meaning it's high but not outrageously. Avondale has a lot of hip places on Diversey and you can hit up this while around. It's across from Ravinia Brewery for an example. The food at Kitchen 17 is defined by pizza. Also there's tons of appetizers. There's stuff like the Macaroni And Cheese, but not real cheese of course. It's about $16 for a personal size, which is actually kind of big. These come with a marinara and the vegan mozzarella, and you get a choice of any two toppings. Last time in here we got it with giardiniera and seitan bacon. The giardiniera is like getting a few toppings. Be sure to get more than just a pizza if you can. It's kind of expensive so maybe the next time try the cauliflower wings or nachos for another option. There's no need to worry about anything for any vegans or vegetarians.
My family and I had an okay experience at Kitchen 17. The restaurant feels a bit cramped, which made it a little less comfortable, but the addition of board games definitely adds to the experience. Hence, the service started off well, with our waitress being attentive, but after we mentioned our dissatisfaction with the barbecue cauliflower dish, her level of engagement seemed to drop. In the end, we would highly recommend the buffalo cauliflower, but that was the highlight of our meal.
Came to see The Kids play and I'm so excited to try the deep dish cheese pizza and one of the delicious sweet treats.
Love the vegan food, especially the deep dish pizza! Service was good. Ambience is cool... quite a feast for the eyes and ears. Just wish the place was a bit cleaner.
We have liked the pizza, especially the fully loaded, although the wife is not a fan of the cheese, but I like the Creaminess. I think the pizza is unique and delicious. We are less fans of those sandwiches. It seems hit or miss. The several times we had it, the gyros doesn't have nearly enough meat. Also not enough vegetables, and it in the end has nothing to do with a gyros and shouldn't be called a gyros, but a pita wrap, and then not a very good one. One time the Philly cheesesteak was delicious full of meat and cheesy. Today it was very disappointing. Not nearly enough meat, all bread, no substance. Hard to believe it's the same restaurant. Chicken parm was substantive, way more weight. read more

stopped by on Sunday Jan 26th in the evening and the service was horrible. The gothic bartender server looked miserable, she kept huffing and puffing as customers kept going to the bar for drinks. She wasn't welcoming nor appreciative for the cash tip that was left for her. She rudely said im about to close and you gotta go. Horrible experience and ambiance was depressing, will not return. I will go to another establishment where they appreciate goos business. read more

My husband's and my favorite place place to order vegan! We've tried the following: Gyro - both our personal favorites. The sliced seitan does a great imitation and overall the gyro is so flavorful. It comes with a side of fries which are warm and slightly crispy even by the time they deliver. BBQ Cheddar Burger - my husband's second favorite. He also gets the sweet potato fries (extra charge) as his side and they add a LOT so I end up stealing a bunch. :) Deep dish pizza traditional - also my husband's second favorite tied with the burger. It helps satisfy his pizza cravings - he recently turned vegan. Super flavorful and one of our fav vegan pizzas and almost ALL their desserts! We tried the caramel apple spice, the mega cookie mud pie, oreo, parent trap, funfetti, and more. my favorite is probably the parent trap or mega mud! read more

During a recent train ride from Denver to Buffalo, my partner and I got to spend a 6 hour layover in Chicago. One of the hardest things about being vegan is missing out on local delicacies when traveling. Nothing makes my day more than visiting a restaurant that allows me to indulge in the vegan version of specialty foods. Kitchen 17 was this magical place! Everything on Kitchen 17's menu is vegan, and it all sounded delicious. My partner and I ordered the veggie deep dish. The vegan version of deep dish was tasty in its own right. One thing that all vegan pizza lacks is the stringiness of the cheese, which isn't anyone's fault, but don't go expecting that quintessential cheese pull you get with original deep dish. Kitchen 17's sauce was really flavorful and the crust was the perfect crispiness to keep everything from sliding off. The atmosphere at Kitchen 17 is where it looses one star. We were a bit confused coming in, there was a host stand at the entrance but there were no signs directing us to seat ourselves or where to place our order. No one was on the floor to greet us. We figured out that we had to order at the window and the food would be brought out to us. There was also a blocked off area where a bunch of storage items were visible, which may indicate they're in a state of transition. Overall the service was friendly, the food was delicious, and I would for sure visit again next time I'm in Chicago. read more

We found this gem on Yelp and even though we ordered carry out we were able to enjoy ourselves. This dope vegan spot has video games at the bar and random board games that are all around the restaurant. You can definitely come here with your friends after work and have a mini game night out. The bartender was also very friendly and helpful. We got the impossible and beyond burger and my partner said that was one of the best burgers he had. We are definitely coming back here for some burgers and games. read more

Grungy all-vegan dive bar feel, specializing in pizza (deep dish available), along with sandwiches and some other items. Since this was our first time in Chicago, we ordered the Fully Loaded deep dish pizza ($31 plus tax), which was more than enough for two of us. The pizza came with soy sausage, spinach, onion, black olive, spicy giardiniera, vegan mozzarella, and marinara. Not as deep dish as expected, but very hearty, somewhat under-salted and not as saucey as expected either; but it all comes together, and the condiments provided (nooch, oregano, salt and pepper) help it out. Solid spot to try vegan deep dish pizza. Recommended. read more

Such a great spot! I ate here with my boyfriend and a friend late on a Friday night. We sat ourselves and grabbed water from a dispenser. My boyfriend and I joke that the best vegan spots always serve room-temperature water! We ordered a deep dish cheese to share and still left absolutely stuffed. My boyfriend is vegan and had never visited Chicago, but I didn't want him to miss out on the deep dish experience. I was skeptical of the idea because I usually don't like vegan cheese substitutes, wow was I wrong! The pizza was fantastic. You can taste the difference because the texture is obviously a bit different but honestly it was still a gooey cheesy dream. I would recommend this spot for anyone, vegan or otherwise! **ETA: Two nights later we were up late and a bit under the influence, looking for a treat. We ordered dessert off Uber Eats and devoured all 3 pieces. We each had a different favorite but liked them all, so you truly can't go wrong! read more
I finally made it to Kitchen 17's newer location. It's a dark bar with Bud ads on the table (and it's somewhat reminiscent of the former Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis, if that means anything to you). By the way, the alleged story behind their name is that they had 17 seats in their original location, so they named it Kitchen 17. The food is as deliciously messy and as plant-based as ever! read more

Customer service was great. The dish was huge with 6 slices enough for 2 people to eat together. Overall great time especially playing a game while we waited for our pizza. read more
This place has been on my list for forger but unfortunately the wait wasn't worth it. I opted for the Philly cheesesteak & I should've read the description prior to ordering because for one I didn't know it was made with seitan & for two I didn't know they put ranch atop the dish. While I do enjoy seitan (the seitan from Chicago diner is the best) this seitan tasted more like gyro meat & the ranch was just weird. I have to mention that cheese on a vegetarian dish totally makes it but this cheese was plain. The fries were fried to perfection I must add. If they put some truffle into them they could be ranked amongst the best in the city. read more

Ok, I know chicken breasts are large these days but woah. Are they always this big?!? (Just kidding, I know it's not real) Like wholly crap, if so I will be ordering again because it was delicious and huge. I don't know if this was an accident or normal for size, I had to take a picture with the bottom part of the bun gone so you can see how big it is. I have already taken a few bites at this point, this was the chicken sandwich. read more

Kitchen 17 has some of the best vegan pizza in Chicago period! We did a round trip 2 and a half hour drive today to bring this pizza home to the fam because when you need to flex that vegan food can be dope, you have to do it right. We have now tried three different pizzas there, and they have all been great. My fav is the deep dish. The pepperoni is legit and makes the NY style pizza. Stop in and give them a visit! I cannot believe this place actually exists. While eating the traditional deep dish pizza, I had to stop and confirm that Kitchen 17 is actually vegan, because dang, it tasted legit. I have never actually had deep dish pizza before, since I have lived in Hawaii my whole life, but my befriend said it was spot on. The traditional pizza had layers of meat (beef crumble and pepperoni), cheese, and sauce. Their cheese didn't have that vegan fake cheese consistency and flavor that I am personally not a fan of. This cheese was perfect and creamy. Their Mac and cheese deep dish was also amazing. A creative item that made my taste buds dance. Definitely go here for your deep dish needs....even though they are moving and may be closed for a little. read more

This place is amazing. I haven't felt as verbose lately, preferring rather to distill my experiences at any place into one sentence. I don't think that will be possible for Kitchen 17! I first heard of Kitchen 17 because my friend in the Twin Cities (Minnesota) orders the pizza to be sent to him there. I looked on the website, and they do indeed ship pizzas all the way up to us, somehow using dry ice to accomplish that feat. However, upon viewing the menu, I knew that I would need to try it in person. My partner, an avid fan of deep dish, agreed. Luckily, we were heading to Chicago the following weekend. I'm very glad that we tried the deep dish pizza here. We ordered 2, and could easily have only ordered one pizza for the three of us! They were large and very filling. I also had the house salad, which was quite delicious. The jalapeno popper pizza does use the medium spicy jalapenos, which gives it a nice kick. We also tried the traditional deep dish, which was really standard date, but absolutely delicious also. I will definitely be making the trek to see them again, hopefully before they move! Kitchen 17 is an all vegan restaurant located in Lakeview East. They have a variety of options from pizza, sandwiches, fries, burgers, and desserts. They have the best cheese fries! Their vegan cheese really is amazing. If I'm in the area I will stop by and get cheese fries. Their dine- in seating is still closed. But they are open for pickup and delivery. read more
