Hanco's makes my favorite Banh Mi's around (I've been to Ba Xuyen but it was a little too "real" for me)! Sometimes though, I feel like they shove too much veg in there and I always seem to get a mouthful of cilantro stems rather than the good stuff. All in all, I really like it and they're shredded chicken is great too if you're in the mood for something different. The bread is amazing, can't complain about that! This is the first unenjoyable vietnamese sandwhich I have ever had. And I know my banh mi. I ordered the pork sandwhich. First the bread: its some weird hoagie roll and not a baguette. Condiments: they use regular jar mayonnaise- no spicy garlic mayo at Hanco's. Meat: the pork was underseasoned and seemed to be steamed and not grilly. The pork was also very fatty and tendony and because of the way it was cooked it wasnt a pleasant sensory experience. I had to take some of the meat out because it was that bad. Extras: Theyre light on the cilantro, give tons of carrot but not much daikon. All in all I was very underwhelmed. The ratio of meat to bread was wrong with way too much unpleasant pork to hoagie bread; so much so that the bread got super soggy and not in a good way. If you have never had banh mi before please go somewhere else like Paris Sandwhich or Saigon or really anywhere else in Chinatown. If you are on the hood and MUST have a sandwhich go to Nicky's. read more

Finally, a place to get boba tea in Brooklyn! I used to love getting it back in LA koreatown, and now I don't have to take the D into china town just to get it. I love Hanco's and usually order the rice vermicelli with tofu -- it's the perfect light meal and the tofu has a nice honey sweetness to it. I'm also a fan of the tofu sandwich, everything about is so fresh and delicious. My biggest problem with Hanco's is that they consistently mess up orders! This location is a lot nicer than their old one. I usually grab a classic banh mi and a taro bubble tea. On my last visit they were both great. The Montague street locations overloads the ice and you barely get any tea, but there was next to no ice in the last one I got from here. My personal favorite is the tofu, medium spicy with no mayo. But the classic, is, well - classic. The vegetarian chicken sandwich and fruit-flavored bubble teas are my jam. I make a stop here nearly every time I find myself in Cobble Hill, and though I'm sure the phos and rice vermicelli sate tasty, I always stick with the banh mi because it's that good. The sandwich has the right amount of meat/mock meat-to-vegetable ratio, and just enough mayo dressing to hold things together. (I'm usually a mayo hater, aside from the chipotle variety, but I can't even taste it in this sandwich.) You can get varying levels of spicy, but they also have sriracha sauce bottles floating around to spice things up even further. The bubble teas are sweet without being too sweet, and the medium is just enough to wash down a sandwich. The typically come cold, but you can also get them warm for those cold days. The employees are friendly, and I've never waited more than five minutes for my food. The restaurant also has a pleasant, rustic-looking decor inside. read more

Seriously. I love vietnamese food. I eat it a lot in many different places. But I have never had banh mi like this. The spicy classic is a thing to die for and the spring rolls (minus the peanut sauce, but adding the hot sauce) were fresh and wonderful. Five stars for classic banh mi and 3.5 for pho. They serve the best tasting banh mi in NYC. I had the traditional (ground pork and pate) and grilled pork - both were fantastic but the classic is the winner. The bread is perfectly crispy, light, and filled with mountains of pork and pickles. Hanco's is good, but not to the level of Ba Xuyen in Sunset Park, or even Saigon Banh Mi, on Mott. The bread is fine, but the vegetables are often sodden. And nothing is reliable, save for the spicy classic. By contrast, all the sandwiches at Ba Xuyen are worth trying. And don't bother with any of the shrimp or summer rolls, either. I live around the corner from these guys and they are a regular neighborhood stop for me now. Especially since they moved to bigger premises with more and better tables. My staple was the Pork Sandwich on wholewheat bun medium spicy but more recently I've started ordering the Pho soups. I've decided the Pork Pho is my favorite. Best Bahn mi that I have had thus far. It was thoughtfully prepared with fresh ingredients served at the right temperature. The ground meat and ham was served nice and warm and tender, while the pickled veggies were cool and crisp. The cilantro matched well and were extremely fresh. The bread was crusty and the sauce added the perfect amount of heat and creaminess. The serving size was perfect and I would not change one thing about that sandwich.
