Everything about this Hanco's is fine but it gets a little extra bonus for being something different in the relative food desert that is Brooklyn Heights. Nicky's is kind of nearby as well but a bit far to walk, especially with a small child. I've had 4 or 5 different banh mi sandwiches from this location and they've ranged from ok (sardine) to very good (pork). The bubble teas are likewise ok to very good, and the pho was acceptable enough to satisfy a pho craving but nothing to rave about. The quality is going down. I order a summer roll and it looks like shit. The lettuce was brown and not fresh. Also, the way they wrap the summer roll looks like shit. I was so pissed off when they didn't even give me utensils. So they expect me to eat it with my bare hands? Horrible customer service, no greeting and they don't even thank you. After I moved to Philly, I mourned the loss of Hanco's from my dining repertoire. Though I live in a good food city, even the best bahn mi doesn't hold a candle to the sweet, spicy, and savory classic bahn mi, which I could happily eat every day of my life. The combo of the pate and minced pork with the right amount of pickled veggies and a good helping of cilantro is fantastic. Plus the price is right. This newest location is the nicest--much more seating, huge menu selection, lots of bubble teas, and you're not cramped (no disrespect to the orginal Smith St locale which was my neighborhood go-to.) They also have an almond bubble tea which I've been unable to find elsewhere. You can't find a better meal for under $10 in NY. And I've tried. read more

The food here is pretty good. So if you're taking out, fine. But sitting in the front or upstairs in a little dining room is not particularly comfy--though the lunchtime patrons, including a lot of bouncy students from the nearby Saint Ann's school, don't seem to mind. Moreover, though service is not inefficient, most of the young women who work here seem oddly cheerless and distant, which always makes it unpleasant to duck in and get the summer roll you're craving. read more

Finally got round to trying the Banh Mi from Hanco's. I wanted something simple and fast for a late lunch on the weekend. Was expecting bread roll, chicken and vegetables what I got was a bread roll that was the perfect combination of chewy soft and crispy, chicken that was moist and flavourful, herbs and vegetables that added the right depth and flavour profile and just enough sauce to complement. Hanco's is always good. I always order the classic sandwich (mild). It contains roasted ground pork, vietnamese ham, pate, mayo, butter, cucumber, pickled carrots & daikon radish and cilantro on a toasted french baguette. I'm not a fan of cilantro so I always pick it out. This sandwich tastes so delicious! It's my favorite Viet sandwich place. I've never had better. I work in the neighborhood so I walk over for lunch, make my order and then run some errands before going back to pick up my sandwich. The line gets pretty long during lunch hours so I order ahead of time. I also recommend the grilled chicken rice vermicelli, which contains rice vermicelli, lettuce, cucumbers and mint leaves topped with roasted peanuts, fried onions and scallion oil. It's also served with a side of vinaigrette sauce. It's a sizable order for the price. I always have leftovers when I order the vermicelli. The summer rolls are also very tasty. They consist of fresh boiled shrimp, lettuce, mint leave, and rice vermicelli wrapped in rice paper. The restaurant has a few tables by the main entrance and an upper balcony area that has additional seating. There's a bench for waiting if you order take out. The orders are made quickly so even if you wait for it in the restaurant it won't take more than 10-15 minutes. They also serve bubble tea as well as other beverages. It's a great lunch spot if you're ever in Brooklyn Heights. One time I even picked up sandwiches to go and walked over to Brooklyn Bridge Park to have a picnic with friends. I am so glad that Hanco's is part of the neighborhood now. They make some great Bahn Mi sandwiches with several options as to what you want in it to the type of bread. As for their Pho, it's pretty good, not that best I've had but it hits the spot and once again you have several options from what broth to what meat so that's always a plus. They also make scrumptious fried spring rolls which are absolutely delicious in all their fried glory! Now on to the Bubble Tea- I never used to be a fan but they whip up a mean tea with those tapioca balls (which I've got to say do get annoying to chew and I end up looking like a damn cow in the middle of the street). I haven't been adventurous regarding the flavors, mainly sticking to the Original black tea but I am sure they are equally as good. Oh and servers/cashiers are friendly. read more

The only place on Montague that's not a lame chain or outdated takeout joint/diner/overpriced cafe so it is very popular all hours. Don't expect authentic Vietnamese food as it's generally a tall order for NYC, but the pho and sandwiches are definitely acceptable, and plus - you're a captive audience anyway in the area. Main drawbacks: I find the girls at the counter rude; they give you attitude when they fill their orders wrong and you ask for a correction or an adjustment. Another miss for this place - over the summer I ordered a watermelon slush and watched them feed nothing but 80% rind in the juicer! Yech, unless you like your juice with a side of pesticides and dirt. read more

I like it here! Quick, friendly service! The workers here keep this place moving. If you speak Chinese(Cantonese), you are in the right place for they do as well. Of course, going with friends, I order in English. The lady right in front of the menu asks: hi, may I help you? I say: One grilled pork banh mi sandwich. She says: mild, medium or spicy. Then I respond: mild, please. She goes on to say: for here or to go? I reply: to go, thanks. That's right! She took my order in a minute and a half. Then I proceed to the very back to pick-up my order when it arrives and wait until they announce my number to let me know that it is ready to be taken to go. The wait for pick up was maybe 4 minutes at most. Talk about speedy service. I liked my grilled pork banh mi. It had a good helping of pork, a happy amount of fat to help me realize it's not just lean pork. It was well seasoned with soy sauce, mayonnaise, and fish sauce. To top it off, it had sweet brined julienne carrots and cilantro on top which made it heavenly. I love banh mi sandwiches. They have a special place in my life! I recall the last time that I came here. I got the pho which is a noodle with broth and sliced beef(raw) on top which was very flavorful as well. My favorite was the diced scallion and the noodles served boiling hot. Man, it took a while getting it up the stairs. Yes, there is additional seating upstairs in case you find yourself on the ground floor with your tray in hand standing and eating. Did I mention it has a sunroof? Hey, if you happen to get their teas or coffee, there is hope for you. Yes, there is a bathroom, that not only works, but it is undoubtedly clean. I went with a friend to NYC and after walk and walk for hours we made it io a nice street in Brooklyn and because I needed wifi we ended up here, I must say I was a bit scared because first of all we were starving and I wanted great food so I told the cashier I WANT SOMETHING WITH NOODLES so I can't tell you guys what I ate but it was SOOOOOO GOOD, so o had a bunch of noodles with chicken ( I don't think it was chicken because the texture was kinda chewy ) and lettuce, with stirred carrot and more, it was a HUGE plate so I ate half and take home the other half, it's pretty, the price it's ok because the portions are enormous and Brooklyn it's just gorgeous :) read more

Ok. I don't usually write reviews but will this time. Am surprised about the bad reviews about the place being dirty. Yes, it's a little cramped but not sure I ever noticed dirt per se. I invariably order the same thing several times a week: the sardine bahn mi extra spicy and I imagine I'm probably one of the very few who order it so often. I love it. Btw, yesterday I ordered a fried fish bahn mi at the newly opened City Point food court. It was ok. Way smaller than the one at Hanco's and at a whopping $14 (was expecting a Carnegie Deli portion but was sadly disappointed by the wee sandwich that was produced) Won't be going back real soon. Just be sure they really understand you. First I wanted Pho, but it's a chicken based soup, so I had to get something else. So I ordered the vegetarian chicken sandwich, which should have been kind of obvious since I didn't want a chicken-based soup. But when my sandwich came, it was regular chicken. Bummer. I eat here at least once a week. It is super fast, easy, and a great price. I almost always order the white meat Bahn Mi with extra cilantro. It is no joke. The salty chicken with the sweet shredded carrots and radish, make me want to swim in a pool of their yummy mayonnaise-like spicy sauce. Last week I had the Pho for the first time. I took it home and was pleasantly surprised on how they had provided all the standard Pho sides of bean sprouts, basil, onions etc. into a carry out box. I mixed it altogether and the flavors melded perfectly. While this is definitely not the best pho I have had, it is good enough for a lovely fall evening in Brooklyn. read more

TERRIFYING. the sandwiches taste basically the same as the one on bergen st (which is what even gets the 2 stars) but the service is AWFUL. it's sooooooooooooooo slow. literally waited more than 20 minutes to get a sandwich, even though i asked about it twice. the staff is clueless and lazy. the place was a mess - dishes piled on tables and on top of the garbage bins. 3 girls behind the counter. 1 taking orders, 2 just chatting with each other. there were groups of other people just sitting, waiting for their food. i would never come back to this one again. better off biking the extra 5 minutes and getting my food faster! read more

Had the best Banh Mi of my life in this casual cafe., including time in Vietnam. Wonderful flavors and just the right amount of spice. The watermelon juice hit the spot. Their banh mi and bubble tea is okay, nothing special. They don't offer much variation of the banh mi.

Hanco's is the real deal - the shredded chicken banh mi is just perfection. The bread is perfectly soft (I always hate that banh mi that leaves the roof of your mouth all scratched), it is packed with ingredients (lots and lots of shredded carrots and daikon and cilantro), and for $6.50, it's huge. The only downside is that at a busy time, you will need to practice zen meditation to deal with the chaotic wait to pick up your food (especially since the receipt doesn't make clear what your order # is -- secret: it's the "cashier number.") read more

so, it was the first banh mi status post a trip to vietnam. expectations were high. i could still remember the taste of authentic cuisine. i ordered the shredded chicken and... well...they ended up with 3 stars. it was good. it was fine. it filled me. but... it wasn't like the banh mi hyunh hoa in saigon. it was also excessively stuffed which made it mighty messy to devour on the promenade. when i return (which i plan to do), i'll opt for the regular banh mi for a true head to head hancos versus saigon street pork/pate/miscellaneous meat banh mi. read more

I frequent this location most because, well because of it's location. The tea is alright, the service is okay(depends on the cashier that day)They play Korean music every time I go there. Today, they played on of my fav bands. Anyway, today I actually tried the food. I got the grilled chicken sandwich with honeydew boba tea. It was good. I didn't taste any mayo though and I don't like toasted, crusty...I mean crispy bread. The bread wasn't soft. Not bad though. I just wish they told me you pick up your food all the way in the back. The food is good. I'm always in the area but I've never actually eaten here until recently. However this is my first time having my food to stay and it will probably be my last time doing that. First, it wasn't that packed but my food took a while longer than it should but that's ok. It was delicious. I got the vegetarian pork with no butter or mayo and spicy. The pickled veggies are delightful. I also got a small peppermint tea and I don't understand why I paid 2.99 for a bunch of ice and some tea. That's an issue, it's just peppermint tea. If I'm going to pay, basically $3 for tea, there should be more tea. I took two sips and it was almost done. Now my biggest issue and probably the reason I won't be staying with my food is that it's a bit smelly, also the place is visibly dirty and the condiment table is swarming with tiny flies. Yuck.
