Hancock never misses with their food & drinks. Great food and fun drinks. Staff is always so kind and welcoming. My husband and I live in the neighborhood and it is easily our first choice for a quick, casual lunch. Atmosphere is great and the music choice is superior. Their outside area is also fun for couples, families, and anyone looking to grab a quick bite. Highly recommend!
The atmosphere here is an old garage restored to a bright and cheery space. You order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. I ordered the Half Chicken Platter ($20). The chicken was perfectly cooked and I got it at spice level hot, which is level 3 of 5. The hot is definitely hot, but it doesn't burn. The chicken was very crispy and juicy. It was very tasty. While it's not the best I've ever had, it is definitely worth a visit. I got it with baked beans and B&B pickles. The beans were good, but nothing special. The pickles were very good. I also got the Fried Chicken Sandwich ($13) at spice level 1 aka sweet. It was very good and the sweetness was tasty. I wish it was a nice thick chicken filet, but it's actually a pair of tenders. They are tender and tasty, I just wish it was thicker. I got the drop biscuit with it and that was probably the best thing I had. Super flaky and melts in your mouth. The service was super friendly and very fast. Overall a solid 4 star review. Would I return? Yes, if I was already in the area. The only real downside was the parking. There is a lot next door, but the price is highway robbery. There are a few paid spots out front too, not sure if those prices are also robbery.
I love Hancock for a quick bite for lunch, I can order at the counter and the staff will bring it out quickly! Their tenders and filets have a great crisp without too much breading. Careful on the spice level- things get hot quick! They have lots of space with lots of seating both inside, and on the patio. We opted for outside since it was such a nice day. Try this spot for your next work lunch break!
We had a good time checking out Hancock! This looks like a really fun hangout space during the warmer months--lots of outdoor seating, garage doors that open to the restaurant's interior, and lots of table games and yard games. Our favorite item we tried was the jalapeño cheddar cornbread, which was just the right balance of flavors. We'll have to come by and try some of the drinks sometime!
This place is incredibly aesthetic! Looks so good on the inside and out! The boozy slushies are so perfect in the summer along with their patio games and abundant seating outside. Love the chicken sandwiches here and the crinkly fries! The jalapeno cornbread is my favorite appetizer! Definitely check this place out! I frequently order takeout from here as well! Just soooo good! Yummy!
love Hancock! The service is always really quick and the food is yummy. Also am a big fan of the alcoholic slushie's and the outdoor seating/games in the summer. Great place for all ages
I started with a Bloody Mary, which came with a CHICKEN TENDER on top!!!! Honestly, you could serve me an empty glass with a chicken tender on top and I'd be thrilled (please don't though ). This bloody had lots of delicious seasoning, which led to great flavor, but also led to a last few gulps that were THICK with salt and seasoning. If you order this, stir CONSTANTLY (but it's worth it to do so!) Derek and I both ordered the fried chicken wraps. He got his the spiciest possible, and said it wasn't unbearable, but it was pretty much the hottest heat level you can get at a restaurant. (I got traditional because I'm a baby, and it was delicious ). The real star of the show, though, is the pimento mac and cheese. You may have seen it in my story, but this might have been the best mac and cheese I've ever had. I've since been told to try it without bread crumbs, and I'm definitely going to do this, but even with the crumbs, it was pretty bomb.
Hancock has such a fun setup -- the interior is super cool, and the outdoor space with games gives it a great hangout vibe. Definitely a fun place to meet friends or grab a drink outside. As for the food, it was pretty good but not amazing. I had the chicken tenders, which were juicy but not very flavorful on their own. The ranch and special sauce helped a lot and were both solid. The mashed potatoes and gravy were easily the best thing I had -- creamy, flavorful, and comforting. The biscuit was a little dry, but the honey butter was good. Overall, it's a nice place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere, but the food didn't totally wow me. Definitely better to dine in than order delivery!
Take out review! As some others noted, the take out bag was a little bit greasy. Nothing that would create a mess. Starting with the appetizer, the jalapeño cornbread-it was good, but honestly, I would prefer without the jalapeño- the bites without tasted better. I do wish I had more corn as well. The entrées of the chicken tender with fries combo were both really good. My husband said the chicken was the most well cooked chicken he has ever had. He said it would fall off the bone (if it had one). The fries were also very well cooked and still crispy after it's journey to our house. You could definitely tell that they change their fryer oil consistently. The pimento mac & cheese was OK. I love pimento and I love cheese and I did not feel that it was cheesy enough. It was a little bit cold so maybe that impacted it. I'd be willing to try it again. The sauces were all pretty good. The ranch just tasted like hidden valley. The hot oil was good, but I didn't feel like oil was the best sauce for the tenders. The Hancock hot was really good. It tasted like a better version of buffalo sauce. The comeback sauce tasted like ranch with extra spices
Planned to order online and pick up but the wait time online said 45min. Decided to just drive in and order. Took exactely 5 min which was great. They have a pretty large outdoor seating area and enough indoor space for eating in but we took our food to go. Kept well and didn't get soggy. Got the jalapeno corn bread and a cocktail to go as well as our chicken meals. I gotta say, the chicken tenders slappppped. Loved the sweet style chicken.
Our server at Winchester recommended Hancock to us on one of our visits, so we finally gave it a try! We were not expecting a fast casual environment, but it was quick nonetheless. The comeback sauce was very good. The chicken sandwiches and salad were good, but did not stand out to us overall.

I've driven by Hancock a few times and kept saying, "I need to check that place out." Well, today I finally came by to sample the schicken sandwich. I was in a rush (unfortunately) so I had to order takeout. There were about 4 tables occupied when I was there around 12:30. Surprised me a bit how light the crowd was for a weekday/Friday. With the outdoor seating area I can see how this place would be a neat option for a meal. I look forward to coming back in warm weather and sitting outside on the picnic tables. I ordered the "hot" chicken sandwich after talking with the staff. She was very helpful in describing the different levels of "hotness." I appreciated her pleasant approach to helping me decide. My first bite included a hearty crunch of their homemade pickles. Local grown cucumbers I was told. Yum... What a marvelous touch to this sandwich. The exceptional pickles were perfect for this lunch treat. They are available as a side order too for pickle aficionados. Looking back, it's funny I noticed the pickle before the "hot." Let me say that the zip was just right. Just perfect. Maybe I'll go up a notch next time, but my mouth was quite satisfied with the amount of zip. The chicken was breaded nicely and was completely enjoyable. Moist and meaty. The sauce complimented each bit exceptionally well. Not too much... But enough to make me appreciate it. The cheese slice was... ok. I like cheese. I'm a fan. Wondering if there are other options for the cheese offering? White chedder? Pepper Jack? Provolone? Not sure, but I'd be willing to help sample/taste test some variations. The seasoned waffle fries were above average. Worked well with the sandwich. I plan to bring the family here for another visit. This sandwich surpassed my expectations and the server who helped me was A+ friendly, professional and helpful. Well done Hancock. A strong 5* visit. read more

I am a huge ROYALS (Louisville) fan and this is the closest thing to the OG here in West Michigan. The location for this establishment is absolutely perfect. The decor is spot on. The vibe is positive. The ambiance is rad. The food is delicious. If you are craving some Nashville hot chicken and you have stumbled into Grand Rapids...this is the joint for you! Sip on some bourbon while you wait for your spiced chicken tenders to make their way to your table. Sit outside and enjoy the sunshine (while you can) on the patio. Say "hello" to a stranger and make a new friend. Caution: be careful with those spice levels. Hottest is the threshold for me. Enjoy! read more
Perfect for a small group of brunch hungry friends! FOOD: Sandwich B is not messing around. Perfectly balanced with crunchy hot chicken, sweet French toast with the perfect crunch, and creamy pimento cheese! Heck of a sandwich. Honorable mention to their breakfast bowl; fresh veggies, creamy grits, and a poached egg. Watch out for hot sauce! It's a small menu which in the end elevates each of their items--highly recommend! SPACE: Small but plenty of seats were available on a Saturday at noon. Love the garage doors with natural light pouring in. SERVICE: Excellent. Attentive, kind and knowledgeable on the menu and offered suggestions. read more

GET YOUR DANG SELF OVER TO THIS PLACE! Best fried hot chicken I've ever had. Literally I felt my body transporting away from earth. Also, they're killing the pun game with take out order's. I'd show a picture of the chicken, but I ate it too fast! read more
Human vs. chicken: human , victorious. I consulted the waitress for which chicken to get. I said I like a mild-medium spice, and she warned me that their "Hotter" chicken is VERY hot, and their "Hottest" chicken is beyond hot. I doubled back and said, "Alright, maybe I should go with a "Regular" b/c I'm not sure what kind of fire I'm playing with here." She took a look at my face, which is often confused as Korean, Japanese, etc., and she was like, "No, I think you can handle the 'Hot'. It's just Jabenero spice." That chicken did all 3 to me. It made me cry, sweat, blow snot with tears running down my face. Definitely a humbling experience. And it wasn't the kind of spicy that you work through that isn't even fun, but you're chasing this sweet and tangy spice on the chicken. It should also be noted that the chicken was crispy without extra breading (not like KFC does them). Other pros: Thick, quality napkins. Doesn't tear as your rub your fingers into them. Very cute set up. Open space. A variety of seating: Nice high booths, larger wooden tables for bigger parties. 2 walls of the whole building open up and allow complete airflow. A lawn with picnic tables with families and kids and dogs to run in. Solid chicken place. A bit on the "$$" range but they gave me an extra breast piece in my order that made me feel like I got enough bang for my buck. read more

The music and atmosphere was so delightful. The menu is simple but the chicken is crunchy without being dry. The fries are crispy and are full of flavor. The "hot" chicken is about a 4/5 on the scale; I highly suggest coming here. read more

Thanks to my sister's earlier review, I avoided ordering overly spicy chicken!! Boy, does this place put out good food! My mom and I came out here for lunch today and we were very happy with the overall experience. The breakfast bowl was incredible-it was a bed of corn grits served with roasted kale and broccoli (a combo made in heaven, seriously), avocado slices, tomato, a poached egg and sriracha sauce. It was so flavorful and jam packed to the brim of the bowl that we weren't hungry when dinnertime rolled around! I also got the chicken n biscuit side, which was big enough to be an entree. The chicken was super tender, juicy, and had the right kind of breading that didn't have too much toothiness to it. The sweet tea was amazing and apparently the coffee was very strong (much to my mom's liking!) We will have to be back to try the dinner entrees and frozen drinks! read more
Went to eat here last week. I was a bit alarmed to see that the staff was not cleaning (let alone sanitizing) the tables in between customers. I had to ask for the table to be wiped off, but even then it looked like just a damp rag (no sanitizer). So many other restaurants in the area are doing better, so I probably won't be back for awhile. Other than that, the tables were spaced out (all outdoor seating), they did provide hand sanitizer, and required masks to be inside to order. read more

Visited Hancock on a Sunday afternoon with a few friends. We sat at the bar and started off with beers and cocktails. The alcohol menu was huge and they had lots of great delicious options, and Chelsea the bar tender was great with recommendations. We got the pimento cheese appetizer with saltine crackers and I loved it! Simple yet delicious. I got the sweet fried chicken wrap and my friends got the fried chicken sandwich and the smash burger along with a few sides. Food was pretty good, I enjoyed the wrap and the fried chicken was delicious. Baked beans were a little undercooked, the coleslaw was most likely pre packaged, but the waffle fries were crispy and well seasoned. The service was fantastic and our food came out very quick. Loved the ambiance/ decor and 10/10 for clean and nice restrooms. Would definitely recommend. read more

Hancock is the go-to fried chicken spot in Grand Rapids! The food is so good. The chicken is so tender and juicy and crispy on the outside. There is just enough breading for a little crunch but not over-breaded. I've been to Hancock twice and haven't been disappointed in the quality of the food -- I love spicy, and they do it well! The restaurant itself is unique and I appreciate the decor. Its cute on the outside with string lights and a fun sign. Inside it's very open, minimal, trendy and lots of light from the garage doors. At night it is a bit dark in the restaurant, not very well lit. We found the space to be a bit noisy and music a little loud, it's very open and not a lot in there to dampen the noise. We didn't have a wait at either of our visits which was nice! The service was not overly friendly, but they did a nice job being attentive. read more
The patio was great! The cocktails were delicious, especially on a hot summer night. We ordered the crab cakes which were awesome. Could've had more of these! However, when it came to our meal selections, they were huge letdowns. The shaved Brussels sprout salad wasn't dressed enough so had to ask for more dressing. The pulled chicken pretzel sandwich was served alone (a la carte). I had to pull out the pickles because they were awful. It didn't have nearly enough BBQ sauce and should have come with fries for the price. I would recommend the place just for drinks and appetizers only. read more

Loved this place! Hancock is a perfect addition to the Wealthy street food scene. Great food, a chill atmosphere, and an awesome outdoor eating area really make this place one to try. The delicious bone-in fried chicken can be ordered in one of four levels: not, hot, hotter, and hottest. We ordered the hot and wow, it was hot. I can't really imagine what the higher intensity spices would be like, so definitely tread with caution. The heat of the hot style chicken was absolutely perfect for me, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The crispy outside and juicy inside make for an awesome combination. For sides, we tried the pimento mac n cheese and the biscuit with jalapeño honey butter. The pimento mac was a great flavor, although a smaller portion than ideal. The shells were a nice touch. I loved the biscuits, and the jalapeño honey butter was amazing. Not too spicy and a great addition to a southern style meal. The cocktail menu was a little underwhelming and could use more options. I didn't personally order a drink, but I tried my friend's southern sipper and it was a bit sweet for my taste. Prices for food and drinks are on the high side, as is standard for this neighborhood. Overall, I definitely recommend giving Hancock a try. The menu is solid, food is great. It just seems to "fit" with Eastowns dining sphere. read more
This place is spicy! My sister gifted us $40 for our anniversary and we checked it out on Sunday April 7 when it was sunny and 60s out. They had their doors open and we got to enjoy lunch indoors but with soft breezes and the smell of freshly cut turf :). We ordered a small chicken dinner (1 breast, 1 thigh, 1 wing), jalapeño cornbread and a chicken sandwich. The options for hotness level were 'not', 'hot' and then more hot from there. We assumed 'hot' would be the next level up from not spicy at all, but it is a huge jump of spiciness - I was not expecting that! The breading was crispy and crunchy and flavorful. The meat was a little on the dry side. I loved that it was casual dining with counter service. I also loved that there were hand washing sinks outside of the bathrooms...genius for hands on eating! read more

I only have one complaint about this place - why do they only have literally one beer choice? And it is cans of Stroh's? :( Otherwise, what an adorable little spot! I absolutely love the "front yard" with the grass and picnic tables. It is like having a little backyard get together with your friends. Hancock has the largest selection of sparkling wine in the City, but I am not sure why that is necessary. Sparkling wine doesnt seem to go well with casual fried chicken and southern sides in my opinion. They also have a small variety of adult slushies with different spirits in them. I got the Millions of Peaches one made with whiskey, and my friend got the John Daly - both were delicious (heads up, they show up in a small glass). I love the setup of this place - although initially they were an "order at the counter" type of place, they have now switched over to regular table service which is much nicer in my opinion. There is a ton of space between inside and outside seating. It could be a little crowded once it is not warm enough to sit outside though. I ordered the restaurant favorite Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich and it was amazing. Their "regular to hottest scale" is really skewed toward the hot side, but they do allow you to order regular and then get a side of house made hot sauce to be able to control it better if you need that. I ordered my sandwich hot, and it was pretty spicy - I could have definitely bumped it up to hotter. I would definitely recommend this sandwich. My friend ordered the half order of fried chicken which is 4 pieces (but he ended up with an extra piece) with a side of waffle fries. The chicken was really good flavor wise and regarding juiciness, but could have used more time in the fryer. The outside was a little pale and not crunchy enough for our liking. The fries were seasoned and amazing! read more

Alright really wanted to love this place as it's cute and right in east town. A few problems happened right after we ordered. We sat down waited for our meal and this lady- the manager? comes to our table demanding to know if everyone in my party was 21. I am eating with my mom and boyfriend after seeing a late movie. My mom is like yes I'm over 21 I can have this drink this is my daughter. Then my boyfriend and I say oh we are 18 but we didn't order any alcohol so no worries. The lady preceded to annoyingly lecture us on how we can't be here after 9 pm as it's a Grand Rapids law. First of all, it is not a Grand Rapids law lol. Second of all, I kindly let her know that maybe they should consider changing this as they might lose business with college students and she snaps back at me and says excuse me??? This is a chicken place not a bar..... Also, the chicken was pretty dry not juicy at all. We ordered white and dark meat and they mixed it all together. We payed for Mac and cheese and it never came. The sauces were not that good. And everything was super spicey. Again, I wanted to like that place but way to throw away your largest potential customer, half of the college population at Aquinas and grand valley. Really weird management... and she said this is "common for Grand Rapids". I'm pretty sure I've eaten at Ruth Chris, palace of India, the reserve etc. and never been IDed after 9 pm. read more

Finally found time to check this place out. The outdoor seating is great and the food and frozen drinks are amazing! We ordered the hot chicken sandwich, waffle fries, and Mac n cheese. Everything was 10/10. The menu is fairly small but everything they do, they do well. We'll be back! read more

Literally one of our favorite quick places to go. Only downfall: You can't call to place your order over the phone- you have to do it online.. which I could see being difficult for someone not great with technology. Overall such great food for its price point. read more

Very Good! All the sides, and chicken main dishes were delicious. But not hot. Probably afraid to burn people and have them demand their money back etc.. I had the half chicken Carolina Reaper Hot. It didn't make me cry, or open my sinuses. That's a spice fail. Not that I'm complaining, it was still a very good meal. read more

I really enjoyed everything that we ordered today! I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of spice so I ordered "Hot" (options were: Regular, Hot, Hotter & Hottest). I was happy with the level of spice - my friend ordered hotter and she said it was quite spicy! I got the quarter white meat and it was just enough chicken (I even took home half of the breast). We ordered all 3 sides to share and that was also a good amount. The seasoning on the fries is really good - I didn't expect them to be so flavorful when I initially saw them as they look very similar to the "Arby's style" fries. Whatever they sprinkle on there is amazing. The sweet potatoes, while small, had a great flavor as well. Lastly, the cornbread - so good! It was baked to perfection and had an almost crispy exterior but the inside was so soft! Our server was friendly and even offered to split our sides right down the middle which was awesome. The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 was because we did wait awhile to receive our bill and the seating is quite limited. I will definitely be back! read more

This place really gives off a classy vibe right from the sidewalk. Whether you choose to sit inside or on the patio, the atmosphere is just lovely. It really enhances the whole dining experience. Hancock is such a hidden treasure in the Eastown area. Today was a beautiful fall evening, and the front patio was buzzing with kids enjoying the play area. Families and couples filled more than half of the tables. The food was honestly some of the best we've ever tasted. The fried chicken had that homemade flavor, and the smash burger, slathered in their special sauce, was bursting with taste. The staff was super friendly and helpful. My wife and I were out for a date night. I dropped her off at the entrance while I found parking. She decided to scan the QR code on the table, and the menu popped up quickly. But she thought it was a bit too much to choose from, so many options. We ended up ordering at the counter like the old days. LOL! Even with that little hiccup, the vibe and the food were absolutely fantastic. We'll definitely be coming back! We highly recommend this place. read more

Delicious food in a great atmosphere to dine out with friends! I loved the spicy chicken sandwich I got as the spice wasn't overwhelming. I also recommend the waffle fries and the jalapeño cornbread. Great comfort food that you won't really find for a casual atmosphere anywhere else in GR IMO. Portions are a bit small for the prices they're at but nothing to really complain about as the food is very good. read more

Hancock has been on our list of restaurants to try for a while now. We finally checked it out today and opted to sit outside. The ambiance and great and lively, and the food did not disappoint. They have a good list of Michigan beers which I always appreciate. We ordered their hot chicken sandwich, it had a kick to it but was so good. We also got the Korean chicken sandwich which had a nice tangy/spicy flavor. The waffle fries were ok, a little too salty for my personal liking hence the reason for the 4 stars. Overall, a great experience. I will definitely be returning to try more on their menu. read more
