This is my favorite fried chicken place in the area, hands down. It's always perfectly crispy with juicy chicken meat and each bite is perfection. We ordered the hottest chicken sandwich, which in my opinion had great flavor but I wouldn't say it's overwhelmingly hot. The jalapeño corn bread is deliciously sweet and moist. Pair it with their butter, that's chef's kiss. We also had an order of the chicken and waffles. Honestly, I think the waffles might be my favorite thing on the menu. It has this caramelized top layer that provides a satisfying crunch with each bite and it's as dense as a piece of cake. Highly recommend. Excellent chicken. Came here with my parents and my kiddos. My mom and I ordered the slushie flight to try all the different flavors of alcoholic slushies. The slushies in the flight are tiny, each is in a shot glass. Expected them to be a bit bigger but they were still tasty. The John Daily was the best. They have non alcoholic slushies as well. We got my 2 year old a Shirley Temple slushy which he was obviously a big fan of. Food was excellent. We got the loaded fries which I will definitely get again. I wish it was a nice thick chicken filet, but it's actually a pair of tenders. They are tender and tasty, I just wish it was thicker. Hancock is still the premiere fried chicken spot in Grand Rapids in my opinion. Best bang for your buck is a whole bird with some sides. Sides of choice are the mac and cheese with breadcrumbs and the jalapeño cheddar corn bread with the honey butter. Not a huge fan of the drop biscuits (dry) and the baked beans. I will say, their takeout deal for tenders was kind of a letdown. 16 tenders, but it's like they used a malnourished chicken for it. Tried Hancock for the first time earlier this week and honestly was disappointed. It hard to find a good southern style chicken place in GR that knows how to do chicken. I order some tenders to keep it simple with some taters and gravy and honestly it'll never be nothing compared to momma's home cooking but I was definitely expecting better. Starting with the appetizer, the jalapeño cornbread-it was good, but honestly, I would prefer without the jalapeño- the bites without tasted better. I do wish I had more corn as well. The entrées of the chicken tender with fries combo were both really good. My husband said the chicken was the most well cooked chicken he has ever had. He said it would fall off the bone (if it had one). The fries were also very well cooked and still crispy after it's journey to our house. You could definitely tell that they change their fryer oil consistently. The pimento mac & cheese was OK. I love pimento and I love cheese and I did not feel that it was cheesy enough. It was a little bit cold so maybe that impacted it. I'd be willing to try it again. The sauces were all pretty good. The ranch just tasted like hidden valley. Hancock is an enigma to me. Typically, when restaurants are set within the heart of some of the trendiest neighborhoods in the area, they can be a bit lax with their quality and tight with their prices (think: Donkey Taqueria). Hancock, however, completely ignores this rule, serving up some really great fried chicken in the heart of Wealthy street that's actually very fairly priced! I mean, a half of a chicken plus two sides for $20?? That is easily two meals for most people. The chicken is consistently delicious. They must brine it or something, because even at the deepest levels of the meat, flavor forges on. The chicken tenders are fine - nothing to write home about, but for only like $8 or 9 bucks, I got nothing wrong with that. Final note - their sides are also WAY too good. The drop biscuit, the pickles, and the fries are all I've tried so far, and I have been seriously impressed. Certainly worth adding these to your meal My one gripe with the place is that they don't have a "medium" heat level for their chicken - it just goes from "Mild" to "hot" to "melt-your-insides-hot." For reference, I like my spicy food (although it does not like me), yet I find myself suffering and sweating profusely at the second-to-the-lowest heat option. Make a medium heat option and I PROMISE it will quickly become the best-selling spice level. Also - on Wednesdays they have a deal for a half chicken with no sides for $12. Hancock is one of my favorite fried chicken places - I went at least once a month when I lived in Grand Rapids and still go every time I visit the city. We recently visited Grand Rapids for two days and ate at Hancock not once, but two times. Half Chicken ($20.00) - Hancock allows you to choose two different spice levels for the chicken. We went with hot and hotter. I believe the level is controlled by a mixture of dry spice (shaker available at the condiment station) and the hot oil. The spice level here is legit - a lot of other hot chicken places in Michigan tend to tone down their spices levels - this hot, on the other hand, is actually mouth burning hot. The hotter is even worse, first starting with a pleasant heat, then building up after around 10 seconds until my mouth was on fire for the next couple of minutes. My first thought after eating the breading, on the bottom soaking with the hot oil: "I think I made a mistake." My partner noted how my face immediately turned red, sweat started pouring down my face, and I started violently hiccuping. And yet, the spice does not overwhelm the flavor. There's a complex aromatic and fragrant chili flavor from the very start. Both the breading and chicken itself are appropriated salted (brined in the case of the chicken). The chicken is tender and flavorful and deliciously juicy. It is so tender that it falls off the bone, even on the wing tips. Everything is in harmony and basically seasoned perfectly. Dare I say the chicken served at Hancock is as good as any place in Nashville? This meal comes with two sides - we chose the Baked Beans and Pimento Mac & Cheese. The beans are mostly tender with a tiny bit of a firm bite. The sauce is a bit sweet, aromatic with a bit of a crunch from onions. There's a bit of bacon added in for additional savory saltiness. The mac & cheese is creamy and rich. The macaroni is cooked just a tad over al dente, so still retaining a bit of bite. The sauce isn't too salty and is a great reprieve to help dampen out some of the heat from the chicken. Jalapeno Cheddar Corn Bread ($6) - Love this cornbread. It's coated and fried, so it creates a very nice crisp skin while still allowing the interior to remain fluffy and moist. There's a strong fresh jalapeno flavor but only a very mild spice, especially compared to the chicken. The corn flour is studded with whole corn kernels for surprising pops full of flavor. The corn bread is served with honey butter on the side - sweet, buttery, rich, delicious. We went back the next night to eat the chicken freshly fried, this time going with hot for half and sweet for the other half. The hot this time was just a pleasant tingle. My best guess is that on the previous day, all the oil from the hotter ended up in a giant pool and also soaked the hot. The sweet is basically the fried chicken basted in the delicious honey butter glaze. Delicious. And as before, all the chicken is tender, fall of the bone, and exceptionally moist and juicy. Usually the tender portion of the breast can tend to be dry and bland, but this one is brined well and you can dip it in the excess oil on the plate for another hit of flavor. The exterior breading also adds a nice crisp. This is a top tier fried chicken. For the sides, I chose the Pimento Mac & Cheese (again, delicious) and the Mashed Yukons & Gravy - creamy, but with larger chunks of potato mixed in and a very herbal and aromatic gravy ladled on top. I do not recommend getting the hot chicken to-go for three reasons. Firstly, the box they use to house the chicken is not waterproof on the bottom. When I lifted it up, the hot oil burst out from the box and splashed all over my hands and the carpet of my car. Secondly, the breading in this case does not do well at all if you don't dig in immediately. And lastly - the hot oil contaminates the other food in the box, rendering the milder pieces of chicken spicier than expected. Yet, I would still give the takeout fried chicken a 5! I typically do the tender basket since it comes with a side, but chose to try the chicken Parmesan sandwich and it was delicious. Ken did do the basket with mac and cheese. He thought the hot sauce was almost a little too hot. Service was quick and friendly. The ambiance is simple but cute. Touches of greenery really add a lot. I am never disappointed by a visit to Hancock. Our last visit was no different. We typically sit at the bar where we are quickly attended to. we always start with an order of their famous jalapeño cornbread. Although we decided from now on, we should really start ordering it for dessert because it is so sweet and buttery and delicious. I For my main course I love their chicken tenders and get them hot. (I've tried the hotter once and that was too much.) I got the mac & cheese cheese as my side and it was good. I've had the Yukon mashed potatoes in the past, and those are also great! This last visit, my husband opted for one of their Lenten specials, the shrimp Poboy. It was good, although he wished there was more than three shrimp, he opted for the fries but we both agreed that they are probably worth skipping next time. Crinkle cut is just not my favorite cut of fry and they have much better side options. In my opinion Hancock has a full bar, but you simply must try (one of their slushies. My favorite is the cold fashion their take on an old-fashioned.) they also have Strohs in the can (you gotta love an old-school option!) meals here are definitely a treat as they are pretty pricey. delicious but definitely bougie chicken. read more

I cannot stop thinking about it. I loved the waffle fries too. they were very crispy and well seasoned. I got my vegan chicken sandwich hot and it did have an intense kick too it. next time i would try the gochujang one. my mom got a regular chicken sandwich and said it was the best she's had in while. the only complaint i have is they only have bread and butter pickles (i despise sweet pickles) but i just went home and added my own no problem. i loved the ambiance of the place and the breeze from the open garage type doors felt so amazing. We love Hancock... they have great food, fantastic atmosphere, solid service and the prices are very reasonable for the massive amount of food you receive! We last dined here with the kids on a Friday night around 6:30p and had no problem getting in. We sat at one of the outdoor picnic tables and while the road noise there on the corner is quite loud... with kids, that's sort of preferred. And we weren't the only ones with that idea... the place was hoping with families who were out for dinner and leveraging the many yard games they have set up for patrons. We had a chicken dinner (again huge!) with two sides, a burger for one of the kids and some tenders and fries for the other. I also ordered a shaved Brussels salad and was a touch dissapointed... it seems the portion size of the salad shrank by half. That said, I didn't go home hungry because I was able to bat clean up for the rest of the family's meals. We also recommend biking there if you can.
