Score for some novelty and variety in Park Slope (sorry anonymous Thai place, I'm just not that into you). Side by side, the Classic Sandwich is somewhat different from the "spicy" version since the Classic has a thick cut of firm pâté, whereas the spicy had more pork and less mayo (although mine had way too much hot sauce in the last bite, requiring a lot of gargling to stop the pain). For both, the pickled radish and carrot combo was way too sweet and not enough sour, and thankfully the cilantro was there to lend a helping herb-y hand. Conclusion: both were okay. Key issue (as you've probably noticed from other reviews): Very slow service. You'd think that they were harvesting the friggin' wheat before you got your sandwich. One final note: Park Slope parents, please, just do take out? There are so many other places you've invaded... er, can patronize. read more

I had the classic sandwich and a Jasmine Green Tea with Boba. I have to say that was one of the best boba teas I had. One of the....I think it's better than most. Hanco is pricey though. I mean, it's Brooklyn. In Manhattan I can get a 24 ounce green tea with boba for $4. At Hanco it's 16 oz for $4.50. Hmmm. Boo. As far as sandwich goes. I was not that impressed. It was $6.50 for a small sandwich. I rather go to Grand Street in Manhattan where you can get the classic pork sandwich (#1) and ask for Pate with it for $5.25. The sandwich from Grand Street is like DOUBLE the size of the sandwich from Hanco's. Seriously. Go to Grand Street in Manhattan for the sandwich there instead! There are not enough words for me to describe my love for handheld foods. Tacos, wraps, sandwiches, burgers, you name it, if I can use my paws to throw it down the hatch, I'm in. Having recently moved to Brooklyn from Miami, I was excited to try the local fare. That's when my eyes met with the glorious sign that read: "Hanco's, Vietnamese Sandwiches" I ordered the #1 Classic, spicy and boy was it awesome! Toasty baguette, with pickled slaw that was slightly sweet, creating a nice combo for the spicy pork goodness inside. I have since gone back, and ordered the pulled pork and the grilled chicken, both delicious, but the classic is the way to go. I've been there at lunch time and afternoon, both times the service was friendly and fast, the food delicious and spicy, and best of all just a few blocks from my new place! read more

I can't give a fair review of the banh mi as I have nothing else to compare it to. This was my first one ever but it was a damn good sandwich. Bursting with flavor, huge and cheap. I could only finish half my sandwich and washed it down with a Thai ice tea boba drink. I'm satisfied. I was chomping at the banh mi to try Hanco's, but wasn't terribly hungry when I went tonight and I've been swearing off bread a bit, so I had the vermicelli salad... which was a disappointment in how plain it was. A lot of food for $6-- it was a huge bowl of vermicelli and bibb lettuce underneath, but the salad dressing seemed watered down. Typically a rice vinaigrette has a tart, sweetness. This was sweet, but mild. There wasn't much joining the rice noodles either.: a tiny sprig of mint, a few pieces of chopped peanuts and that was it--!!!! My companion made the smarter choice and had the pork sandwich. I snagged a bite and was in heaven. Guess I shouldn't have had a salad a sandwich shop. Oh well. I know I can go back and have a killer sandwich when I need one. It was perfectly everything I love about Vietnamese food when you get a bite that is sweet, salty and sour. We also had the summer rolls, which were really beautifully presented. Simple interior, but a delicious if not slightly flat peanut dipping sauce. I didn't try a bubble tea, and agree $4 is unfortunately steep. This is how much they cost at Lili's on the UES... I know it's Park Slope, but it's a Vietnamese sandwich shop, not a real sit-down restaurant. All that said, $4 won't prevent me from ultimately treating myself to one since I'm an addict, but it gave me pause about getting one tonight. FYI, some things take FOREVER there. 3 people who ordered after us (keep in mind: 1 sandwich, 1 prepared noodle salad) all had their orders ready before ours. What held it up? The summer rolls, which were shrimp, vermicelli, cilantro, lettuce, and chives wrapped up. I still don't get the wait aspect on a simple dish like that, but nevertheless, 15 minutes later it was all done. Agreed: the take-a-number DMV comparison is accurate and annoying. Hopefully this place will get better w/ the service and wise-up about the prices. I have to say, no one really seemed to mind. They did a startlingly brisk business while I was there... The smell of fish sauce that permeates the corner of 10th st and 7th ave makes me want to barf. On the occasions I've gone into Hanco's with anyone who wanted to eat there, the inside stench almost knocked me out. I don't understand. Their other locations don't have this issue, nor does any other Bahn Mi place I've ever been to. I'm not a pork eater, so I can't comment on the classic sandwich, but the shredded chicken one is pretty gross. I've been there many times, since I work on the same block, and the last time I went there the lettuce in my salad was UNWASHED. There was grit and dirt in EVERY BITE. I will NEVER be going there again. To me, dirty lettuce is one of those inexcusable offenses that mark restaurant off my list forever. Three and a half stars. I was introduced to Bahn Mi here a week ago and I have to say, this is now my new favorite food and I crave it constantly. I grabbed a chicken bahn mi and it was absolutely delicious. I was impressed by the flavors as well as the handle-ability of the sandwich, an important factor when considering how good a sandwich is. But why oh why are there cilantro stems in the sandwich?! I'd understand if they had leaves attached to them, but there were an abundance of straight-up leafless stems in my bahn mi, and that really disappointed me. I love cilantro, but hate those stems. In fact, those stems are why I cannot in good conscience give Hanco's a 4 star review. I also snagged a black tea latte, which is a new-to-me spin on my classic chai tea latte order that had me thrilled. Loved it! How to order for dine-in: go up to the counter. Tell them what you want. Pay. Take the number they give you. Sit down and listen for number. Trade number for food. Eat. PS-$10 credit card minimum. And they have one of those buy-9-sandwiches-get-1-free stamp cards. If they did,they would know me as the girl that orders the classic banh mi (mild) that comes in before the rush. If only...if only. Luckily, there is one close to my apt and it's always a treat to get a banh mi. I usually call in for pick up and when I walk there, it's all ready for me! My favorite and only-one-for-me is the classic banh mi (mild). They pickle their carrots and turnip so well that the flavor balances the heat and sweetness from the meat and spices. This is place is great! Stopped by on a whim around 4:30p on a Saturday and decided on the spot that I was in the mood for a delicious sandwich. And that is exactly what I got! I ordered the classic sammich which was super tasty and very filling! I asked for it medium spicy which was pretty perfect for me. There were plenty of seats/tables, so I didn't feel guilty taking up a table for myself. The atmosphere was very friendly/low-key. My food was ready quickly and no one seemed to mind that I ate it slowly while reading. I also ordered a chai latte that had a strange taste to it. Probably was my preference but I couldn't finish it. So next time I won't order that. But the sandwich was still deliciousdelicious! read more

So after trying Lotus, being disappointed, and reading on Yelp about how much better Hanco's is, I decided to give it a shot... The truth is I had made my way over to the Park Slope Barnes & Noble to pilfer the free wifi there (as is my usual custom), but (THE HORROR!) there were no empty seats! Heading toward the exit, I saw a couple walking in with cups of boba (bubble/pearl tea, or whatever you guys call it haha) from Hanco's and asked them where it was. They said it was "just two blocks down that way" and pointed me in the right direction. Off I went to satisfy my frightening addiction to boba/pearl/tapioca/bubble milk tea. So I got there and wasn't surprised to see the $4.75 price for the 16-oz drinks; Lotus had already shocked me into submission. However, I was a little surprised and hugely relieved to see the "Free Wifi" sign on the door! I ordered the regular milk tea (as usual) and I agree that it was noticeably better than Lotus. Instead of the drink being 50% milk and 50% tea, it was 100% milk tea but only 50% as tasty as I would have liked! But an improvement nonetheless. I still have not been to the NY Chinatowns but based on the selection in Park Slope/Prospect Heights, I am skeptical about whether any of the stuff here will measure up to the drinks I am used to from Monterey Park and San Gabriel in CA!! : / read more

They make a damn tasty Bahn-Mi. My biggest gripe is the price, but such is what you pay when you're not at Ba Xuyen or Than Da (but also the price to pay for Park Slope) The rest of the food here looks delicious - I've been here with some groups of friends before, and everything they eat looks great (but I'm stickin' to my vietnamese sandwich because It's so damn tasty). The food here is delicious! I usually get the grilled chicken Banh Mi or the grilled chicken salad and both are very flavorful and fresh. I just tried their Pho for the first time and was impressed! It was so tasty and had a lot of beef in it! They also have a pretty good selection of bubble tea and recently added herbal jelly!! The only complaint I have is that it sometimes takes a little long for the food, but the area is busy during lunch and most of the restaurants take a bit. read more

I loved the sandwiches I had when I was in Vietnam on business. So when my daughter suggested going to Henco's for Banh Mi, we were there. My daughter is a vegetarian, so she had a sandwich that was Tofu based. My wife had one with chicken and I had the house standard that had flavorful pork and pate in addition to the great vegetables and sauce. But we all agreed that it was the terrific bread that made these Banh Mi sandwiches. It was crisp on the outside, but not hard and soft and chewy on the inside. The mouth feel was perfect. My first visit to this pretty famous vietnamese spot in my hood after hundred times I walked by. Usually I see it busy and I have not yet felt the fatal attraction for the vietnamese sandwich which seems to be so popular these days... But I'll try it, sure I will. Maybe it's the pickles? So, this time it was mid afternoon, need a snack, Hanco's looks quiet. It's the perfect occasion to try the summer rolls. I think they keep some ready because by the time I paid the roll was there, bagged and packed to go. Once home I enjoyed this very good summer roll, with a very nice peanut sauce.
