We had our young toddler with us, who was having a particularly challenging evening. Like most toddlers, he was reaching for things on the table and at one point grabbed a plastic miso spoon and banged it against a plastic cup. This lasted approximately 5-6 seconds before we were able to take it away from him. We were right there the entire time and were actively trying to manage him. The woman working at the till, who had been staring at our table for much of the meal, then came over and angrily reprimanded us, telling us to "be careful with everything" and to "control the baby." We understand that restaurants need customers to respect their property, and we were absolutely doing our best to keep our child from disrupting anything. But approaching paying customers in an angry and condescending manner over something so minor was completely unnecessary. Having a toddler who is having a difficult moment is stressful enough without a staff member publicly embarrassing and reprimanding the parents. There are much more respectful ways to address a concern with a customer. We were spending over $100 on dinner and simply wanted to enjoy a family meal. Instead, we left feeling embarrassed and unwelcome. What was particularly disappointing was that we were already dealing with the situation ourselves and didn't need someone standing over us and telling us how to parent our child.
