The name of the restaurant comes from one of the Charlie Chan mystery books written by Earl Derr Biggers in the late-1920's. The legend is that Biggers, a Honolulu police detective, wrote his Chan books in the back yard of a friend that lived in a house where the hotel is now located. We ordered the Wagyu and the chicken tonkatsu, and both were so good. The chicken tonkatsu was crispy, juicy, and exactly what we were hoping for. I also loved that they offer refills on the cabbage and vegetables, just like in Japan. It's one of those small touches that makes the whole meal feel more authentic. The highest praise came from my preteen, who said it was the best tonkatsu he's had outside of Japan.
