I went here to get a ring repaired and another ring sized. I'd been to a competitor a couple of years ago to get one of these same rings repaired. What a completely different experience. The sales people at Hamilton Hill were very warm and friendly. The goldsmith who was going to do the actual repair met with me, explained what he would be able to do and gave me a choice with the estimated cost. *UPDATE* After posting my initial review with several concerns on pricing adjustments, I received a page long letter from the owner in the mail, along with a rerun for the extra (accidental) charge. As a business owner myself, I know personally that not every customer interaction can be 100% perfect, but their response to this one said a lot to me about the importance of their customers to their business. I really, really want to like this place. After inheriting some jewelry from my mom when she passed away last year, I was looking for a local shop with a little more style than your classic jewelry store. The women who have helped me have always been nothing but nice, and the final product has always been good work, but I've struggled with the transparency and timeliness of he work. Both times I've given them jewelry to be sized/repaired I was given a quote and timeline. Both times I was charged more when I picked it up than what I was quoted, and both times it took longer than expected. The first time this happened I got the run around every time I called until I eventually broke down in tears on the phone (they were resizing my mom's wedding band a week after she had died). Then they finally seemed to have it ready. The second time I went I wanted to see if that experience was a fluke, but I had a very similar experience. My boyfriend brought a necklace in, and they gave him a verbal estimate for a possible chain replacement. While I know it was just an estimate (~$200), the quote I received via email was $100 more than that. I decided to go with just the clasp repair ($63, as quoted via email), and when I picked it up was charged $97. I totally understand if there are labor costs associated, but I think it's important to be transparent with customers about this before making repairs, not afterwards. read more

If you want a piece of jewelry that's unique and that you won't see on anyone else at a dinner party, this is your place. If you want customer service, make sure you dress for it, especially if you're a male under 50 (Normcore hasn't made it to Durham yet, so you're not going to get the hipster benefit of the doubt). If you don't dress the part, expect to have to ask for help, or chase down a sales person. The up-and-down scan and about-face from the eventually helpful salesperson was pretty telling. Hands down our favorite Jeweler! I was looking for an engagement ring and didn't know where to begin so naturally I googled jewelers and had looked at a couple places but noticed Hamilton Hill and it's rave reviews. I walked in clueless about what I was doing, not sure how to pick out a ring and how much I would need to spend. One thing I did know was I wanted something unique and quality. Something that wasn't on every shelf of every Jeweler. Well when I walked in Shelly began helping me and quickly made me feel relaxed about the whole process. She showed me several designs and combinations and worked so patiently with me and my thousand questions and design concerns. Sarah and Murial, helped me as well. In fact the entire staff there were so great to work with and be around. Needless to say they also had some of the most unique jewelry I had ever seen and ended up getting a great engagement wedding band set for my future wife. We also got my band there as well. What was also a bonus is how awesome the store is, as it sits in Brightleaf square, an old tobacco warehouse turned retail space, made from giant timbers and old brick. I'm from San Diego, CA and I was looking for a Furrer-Jacot carbon wedding band for myself for my wedding which was about 2 weeks out and had been emailing and calling around jewelers around the U.S. to compare overall pricing, which included the ring, shipping, and engraving. When I contacted Hamilton Hill, I was contacted by Muriel Tissonnier. She was very friendly, helpful, communicative, and patient with what I needed and was looking for. Plus, their store had the best overall pricing for me. I pulled the trigger to order the ring to be made at Furrer-Jacot's factory in Switzerland, because the factory had told her I would receive my ring on time. Unfortunately, they called her back a day after I had ordered and told her they had given her the wrong information and could not fulfill the order in time for my wedding. At that time, Muriel tried her best to see if there was anything the factory could do to get it out to me and the factory could not do a thing. Then, Muriel tried to see if she could get a different ring from them that could arrive in time and that also was not doable. She had also tried to source a different brand ring in-store or another of their stores that looked good to me and would fit me. There were none available in my size that fit my taste. Lastly, she even offered to send me a temporary ring while my Furrer-Jacot would have been made. In the end, I was cheerfully given a refund of my original order and sadly I was not able to purchase anything through Muriel. I wish I had called her earlier to get my ring in on time, but did not know the ring would be made overseas and the lead time needed for it. For anyone thinking of buying from this store, I highly recommend contacting Muriel as she will take great care of you and is a wonderful representation of the service you would come to expect from this store. I worked with wonderful Sarah and her entire stellar staff for several weeks to liquidate some family jewelry I no longer wear, and then to reinvest the proceeds into pieces I love and will wear forever. The process of letting go of jewelry from my personal history was an emotional one at times, but Sarah was the perfect companion and guide. She gently encouraged me to keep certain pieces and helped me see how they could be restyled or refitted so that I now have rings and bracelets that are fresh and contemporary. For the pieces we liquidated, I have replacement stunners to wear, many drawn from the store's exciting inventory of work by major international jewelry artists. Our biggest project was creating a ring that I had dreamed of for a long time. Sarah indefatigably sourced the stones until she found the superior quality she was aiming for.
