Wearing 190s Prom Dress from Dolly's; Photographer: Chris Florio

An absolutely adorable Vintage boutique! In my quest for some Vintage dresses I followed the leads of Jennifer W. and Christina G. Not disappointed! What a wonderous magical land Dolly's is. Immediately smiles were bestowed upon that eager face of mine! Bright colors and fun displays. Antique lunch boxes. Funny t-shirts. Candies. Wigs. Toys. Shoes. Toys. Purses. Oh, and those clothes! Vintage delight! Vintage wear, gifts, trippy accessories, and so much more!!! Inspired by her Grandma Dolly, owner Jennifer Donner has a beautiful boutique that will take you away to another era. The hours are kind of a pain though being that the shop is only open from 10am to 5pm Tues through Sat. It's good that they have those Saturday hours because only being open from 10am to 5pm sure makes it hard to get there during the week unless you live or work nearby. I called one day after 5 and left a message on an answering machine without a greeting and never got a call back. The next day I tried again and spoke to the owner. So glad I did! She was super enthusiastic and helpful in telling me about her store and in what she had. Thankfully I was able to rush over there and pop by on a lunch break! I needed 40's of 50's (for a photo shoot) and she said she'd do everything she could help me find the perfect dress(es). I walked in and introduced myself. Jennifer was just as excited to help me as I was to explore her shop. She took me straight to the racks that might have the stuff I needed. I was going through dress by dress and smiling as I imagined the women who used to wear them. Then I turned around and looked up at the wall behind me. Oh glorious lovely lacey blue, pink, purple, and yellow dresses right out of a 1950's teenage prom dream! I asked to see them so she pulled them down. At $95 they were definitely of the range of what I wanted to spend, but in my hands precious treasures. I tried on two black 1940's dresses (think Audrey Hepburn) and two prom dresses. The black ones were a little big and needed alterations, but worth it. That pink 1950's prom dress with a tulle skirt and beautiful accents around the hemline....made for me. The owner excitedly declared, "Vintage suits you!" I smiled and replied, "yes it does. I love it." Ps. I've already worn 2 of the dresses this week and felt so fantastical wearing them. I've posted 3 pictures of me in the prom dress though.

    Love my "Durm" shirt!

Brightleaf Square is a quaint retail development located in the center of the Brightleaf…read moreneighborhood in downtown Durham. I'd call it a "shopping center," but it's not like a typical suburban shopping center. The development consists of two repurposed brick warehouses, originally built in 1904, that used to store bright leaf tobacco (that's where the name comes from). So, Brightleaf Square looks and feels historic, and that's what makes it charming. That said, the development is kind of small and there's not that much here. If you want to walk across the street to, say, Rose's or Jeni's, then yes, the neighborhood (also known as the Brightleaf District) has more to offer. I highly recommend Rose's, by the way, for their ramen and ice cream sandwiches. Strictly speaking, within the square, Emmy Squared Pizza is terrific for their Detroit-style pizza. It's among the best deep-dish pizza anywhere, in my opinion. There's also Clouds Brewing, which is a craft brewery and restaurant. Other businesses are local/boutique shops, such as Bull City Art & Frame Company and Mill & Meadow Stationery Shop, and private offices. The brick/stone walkway, old-fashioned lamp posts, string lights, trees, benches, and early-1900s buildings can make for a fun, whimsical stroll with friends and family before or after lunch or dinner. It's also a good date spot, especially if you incorporate the larger neighborhood (e.g., pizza at Emmy Squared followed by ice cream sandwiches at Rose's). For parking, I suggest parking in the surface lot at the corner of W Main St and S Gregson St. You can enter the lot from either of those streets. Pay attention to signs as you may have to pay during certain days and times. Fun fact: Durham's infamous "Can Opener Bridge" is located on the south end of Brightleaf Square. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out the bridge's Wikipedia page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norfolk_Southern%E2%80%93Gregson_Street_Overpass Also, watch some of the videos on this YouTube channel to see the Can Opener in action: https://www.youtube.com/@11foot8plus8 The camera that captures those videos is mounted on one of the buildings at Brightleaf Square.

Brightleaf Square looks like it'd be cute and fun to walk around in, but that's really all it is…read more Pretty market lights and small shops but nothing actually to do..? Hopefully they add better restaurants and more variety of boutiques here because the square is not living up to its potential. Basically, I'd skip this and head over to ATC.

I found this one last second with about a half an hour before closing 11 minutes away from us. So we sped off get there in time. When we got there and walked through the little pink door, it was the cutest little shop. So my friend is visiting from Scotland and we wanted to get some kind of necklace or piece of jewelry that matched. They have a great selection. We opted for some lava rock bracelets that help with communication, truth, and strength. I grabbed a little shot glass that said North Carolina on it because I have to have a trinket from every trip I make. When we were checking out, she said that somebody wanted to donate a basket to somebody that they had bought and wasn't gonna pick up so we ended up getting a free basket from Krystal! That was the sweetest thing. We were like two little school girls opening it up and dividing all of the little snacks inside. So thank you for making the end of our trip wonderful!!
