My wife follows them on Instagram and had always wanted to visit. We happened to be driving by the street, saw the location, and stopped in. This is a boutique shop with interesting clothing and gift items. The clothing was a little expensive but we ended up getting some sweets and greeting cards. They also seemed to have some grab-and-go food items from a local caterer. The staff were very friendly, even when it got a little crowded during our visit. I'm absolutely smittened by Smitten! I stumbled on this boutique after being on the hunt for Durham Toffee small sized bags. Im normally very well versed in the boutiques in the area but I had no idea this one existed! They didn't have the toffee I wanted but will call me back on Monday to see if there is another shipment available. Upon browsing the store I found a sandal that spoke to me! The price tag was a bit steep but I knew I loved it! I have this rule that if I can find the same item online for cheaper, then I can't support the small business and will have to buy online. I'm thrifty at times and need to stick to being a careful consumer. I shared this with the cashier and she said "by all means! The owner does a good job at pricing but see what you find". Behold on amazon, there was only a 5 cent difference. Whattaya know! Amazing. I got the sandals and am so happy because they are so comfortable and I was able to walk out with them immediately, knowing that I got a great price for them and that brick and mortar doesn't always mean inflated prices. Well, I wasn't totally smitten with smitten. They're slightly off the beaten path of Main St, so may not get as much foot traffic as, say, Uniquities. I'd read up on them in the recent Durham Mag and was excited to see what they were all about. Dropped in this afternoon and perused the wares. I love that they share a space with Teresa's (a home/gift store), so you can potentially get everything from candles to clutches in one convenient stop. They have a mix of accessories and ladies clothing, and actually stock a pretty impressive volume. The reason for the three-star rating has more to do with the fact that it seems to skew a bit older so most of the stuff was not to my taste. That said, I think it's a cool (and probably needed!) alternative to many of the boutiques downtown. read more

I'm a fan. While no shop is going to offer merchandise to suit every taste, to me a 5 star shop is one that offers good service to every customer. I took my elderly mother-in-law to Smitten when she was in town. Mom does not get around or see very well these days and her shape and style are not the current norm. The shopkeepers in Smitten were very helpful and supportive. They turned what could have been a rather frustrating day into a pleasant outing. She did not find the dress she was looking for, but did find some shoes and left very happy. And I saw a few things I will be returning to check out for myself. Smitten is one of those shops that I only dare venture into a few times a year, because when I do go in, I want all the things and risk breaking the bank. This locally-owned boutique has curated the loveliest collection of clothing, accessories, gifts, and other finds, and I never leave empty-handed. The pieces are interesting, unique, and never leave you looking like you've dressed yourself from a department store rack. On my most recent visit, just before Thanksgiving 2020, I selected two complete outfits and a number of earrings, necklaces, cuff bracelets. It was a restocking shopping trip (I've recently lost weight and am rebuilding my wardrobe). As I was checking out, Nancy, the owner, said you know, I'm having a Black Friday sale that starts next week, and I'm going to apply the discount to your purchase now. I replied that she didn't need to do that. And she said, "Oh, I don't do business that way." She saved me over $300! I was grateful. And she won a fan for life. A Bull City gem. I was not impressed with the new Smitten location. The two ladies in the shop followed me around like a hawk, and seemed very dismissive towards everything I said. This was also the first time that I went into a boutique and didn't find a single thing that I would wear. It's all very dated, and definitely directed towards an older clientele. read more

I was anxious to see the new store and just ran in briefly. The energy is not good at this point. They must be exhausted from the big move. The shop is very crowded with only three folks in there: me and the two owners. Not very welcoming....The clothes are fantastic...just wish for a fun atmosphere to try these wonderful basic clothes which are probably suitable for traditional and older customers. I wanted to love this place as my mother and I are always looking for local boutiques to shop at vs chain stores. However, the customer service is terrible and it does not have the local charm that you would hope for from a shop like this one. Not very happy with this shop, at all! While the clothes are cute, the customer service is pretty ugly! I found myself having to constantly ask for other sizes of clothes while trying things on and was never checked on. I wish I got paid to chit chat in a cute boutique and just work the register when the clients approached with their purchases. Easy!!!! I also HATE when sales persons tell you they absolutely "just LOVE it on you" and it "looks so good" when in fact it isn't at all age appropriate for me and makes me look frumpy...stop trying to sell me even more of your expensive clothing! read more

My experiences at Smitten have been fun, and usually very successful. Parking is easy (nice lot on the property), and the shop is in a cute little house. I have found gifts for "hard to shop" for people, and great shoes, a handbag, and sweaters that I have enjoyed. The inventory is varied enough to satisfy many styles for multiple ages. It is well worth my time to venture away from the malls to W Main for some personal touch shopping! read more

Smitten has the WORST customer service ever! I am not too sure how a small business would even think to operate this way in today's day. Nancy, the owner, needs to appreciate and value the customers who do come in to her store regularly. If a regular, well known customer bought over $150 of merchandise the day before a sale (unknown, not publicized prior), the courteous and smart business move would be to honor the new sale price. Additionally, if you say you are going to call a customer back after attempting to get a dress dry cleaned due to a stain on it, call them back! Don't make them call the store 3 times inquiring about it. Lastly, it shows really poor character to talk to your other employee about the last customer who just left the store, and state, "I really had to waste a lot of time to make that sale". Without that woman, you wouldn't have a job or store. From here on out, I will no longer go to, support or recommend this store to anyone in the triangle area. In fact, I would discourage everyone from shopping here as Nancy will likely fakely smile at you while you are in the store, take your money happily, and then talk about you after you leave the store. read more

Once again, the owner, Nancy, and her staff at Smitten have not disappointed at my absolute 'must go to' boutique! On my all too brief visit to Durham, I loved, as always, the amazing spectrum of choices and dazzling accessories for a one stop shop experience (including the shoes!), and nothing is ever too much trouble for these very helpful and amazingly knowledgeable staff for folk like me who pretty much have no clue for what suits best, what goes with what and how to look put together, feel like a million bucks and be comfy all at the same time! Do you have this skirt in the next size? This top in a different color? And, what could go with this dress as a lightweight jacket for cooler evenings?
