UPDATE (12/2022): I've stopped by several times at this Jeweler to get the same repair done. The chain on my silver necklace breaks and needs to be reconnected maybe twice a year, so I would bring it in and they would fix it in less than 30 seconds at no charge, despite my insistence. Sometimes he would even polish my ring too, without my asking. I was very grateful for their kindness and recommended them to all my friends, because I was so surprised by their generosity in not even charging a flat $5 fee, or something along those lines. I never expected this to be free and was always willing to pay, but they insisted. Because I had nothing short of GLOWING experiences here, I thought it would be no problem to ask my boyfriend to bring my necklace there to be repaired, just like I always did. I told him it would probably be free, but definitely less than $20 (wouldn't be worth it). He texted me after dropping it off that it would be over a month and $60! I called them immediately to ask why it was costing so much and taking so so much longer than normal (like I said, not even 30 seconds usually and I never had to drop it off, I just waited). The lady who answered the phone was very exasperated with me saying that because he dropped it off they have to charge a flat fee, labor must be paid, it's the holidays so they're busy, etc. Of course I understand that labor must be paid, but $60?? After getting that same service multiple times for $0 (and a review)? Of course the holidays are busy! But why would you require a repair that small be dropped off during such a busy time? She was very condescending and blamed my boyfriend for dropping it off instead of waiting. He explained to her that one chain link was broken and she told him to drop it off for $60. That was predatory, gross, and relying on his ignorance of jewelry repair standards. Luckily she let me have them set it aside and pick it up the next day. Will not be returning nor recommending due to sexist business practices. Such a pity. read more

I've only been to John David Jewelers once, but it was such a wonderful experience that I can't imagine going anywhere else! I needed my great grandmother's bracelet repaired as the latch wasn't working properly, and he fixed it in about 5 minutes right in front of me. He took the care to explain the different facets of the bracelet, what each part was made of and how, and let me watch him fix and clean it. It was just a kind, personable experience where I could tell everyone truly cares about doing quality work and keeping customers happy. We have had absolutely fabulous experiences here! My fiancé went in with an heirloom diamond and worked with the staff to custom design the setting for my engagement ring. They are really honest jewelers, who started off with meeting with him to teach him what he needed to be asking when looking at E-Rings (no attempt at a Sale!). He came back and worked with them on the design, which came out so beautifully and personal. The work is absolutely incredible, and I receive a lot of complements!! He was so impressed with the service that we went back together to pick out our wedding bands. I contacted this mom-and-pop shop to resize my wedding band. The lady (the co-owner) was very nice and attentive, and said it cost $125 to resize it. It was more expensive for this particular ring because of the metal used, and I agreed on the price. She said it will be ready in one week. They called me back a day later and told me the ring was ready to pick up. When I saw the bill, it was about $25 plus tax. I asked if there has been a mistake as they were charging me less than what we had originally agreed on. The gentleman (the co-owner) said that since the resizing was small, he could do it with a simple tool and did not need the more labor intensive version. Frankly, I would not have known what method he had used or really cared. He could have charged me $125, and I would have been happy with the work. Dave custom made my engagement ring. My fiancee had his grandmother's sapphire and diamonds and specific ideas for detailed engravings. I mean detailed. On this incredible ring, Dave engraved 1.Ginko Leaves 2.Hummingbird 3.Anatomically correct heart and 4.Dogwood flower pattern from the childrens book, The Velveteen Rabbit. I had an excellent experience with David the owner. I came in without an appointment, but was able to meet with David without any problems for a consultation to split my platinum ring into two thinner rings. He said it would be no problem, while the original maker of the ring said they wouldn't do it. David gave me what I felt was a very fair price to do my custom order. After it was done in a week, he bought back the residual platinum scrap from the splitting and took it off of the price. He was a very sincere person to work with. I also like how he gives you his platinum prices based on the current market rates, rather than on some made-up number. I needed to get my wedding band enlarged so I went to John David Jewelers in Durham, NC. There was a young woman at the front counter to greet me and an elderly gentleman who came walking out of the back room where their equipment is who I assumed was the owner. I asked about stretching verses adding more gold; John and I agreed to try and stretch it first. I gave him my ring and he went into the back to stretch it. The woman at the counter said that they have this fantastic stretching machine. The next thing that I heard was pop, "shit" coming from the back room. And then I saw my broken ring. Well that settled that argument right there and then. So I left the ring to have gold added and was told that it would take ten days to fix. In case you were wondering, the band would have needed cut anyways to add the gold. I was enlarging it 1 1/2 ring sizes which is too much to stretch. But what the heck, we gave it a try. Seven days later I get a call that my ring is ready, so I hustled over to see the final product. My ring was a perfect fit and the craftsmanship to add the gold was excellent. When I got my ring home I looked at it under a large magnifier and could not find where the gold was added; a perfect job. I would highly recommend that you take your jewelry needs to John David Jewelers. You won't be disappointed. read more

I am not sure where to begin. John David Jewelers is a First rate Family Business. My fiancé and I felt that the owner David was the one for us from our first meeting. He made us feel special, that my engagement ring and band would be exactly what we wanted or he would start over. I had talked to another designer but it wasn't personal enough. I showed David a picture of a design I wanted and he went right to work on our custom pieces. I had my diamonds from my mother's rings, she had passed 3 years ago, and I wanted to incorporate them into my rings. David walked us through the whole process from the wax mold, to the mold process, the unfinished rings before engraving, to the final product. I was so elated when were picked up the rings.
