Skip The Chains... I found this gem a few years back and every time I fly into Birmingham, I stop and eat here. This is local flavor at the very best. And you only find the local neighborhood here. Come lunch time, every heating and air guy, sales rep, route driver, father and son, plumber and local sweethearts are eating with their elbows on the table. I used to love this hamburger heaven for their flurries. They don't skimp on the candy like McDonalds does and they put even more than DQ. However, they have stopped serving M&M as well as Heath in their flurries which has resulted in me having to go to DQ on liberty parkway for my ice cream fix. I lived in the Birmingham area for the first 28 years of my life. I found Hamburger Heaven when my Grandparents moved to St. Martin's in the Pines. We got burgers from there and they were great! Then, when I had vocal cord surgery done at Montclair Hospital in 2001, I could only eat soft things, so my dad got me a strawberry milkshake from Hamburger Heaven. I'm working in the Irondale area now so expect to see some more YELP reviews of places out this way. That being said, I have found myself going to Hamburger Heaven about once a week lately. It doesn't hurt that my supervisor loves it (he actually said he could eat here every day!) and I'm sometimes with a group of teenagers when I eat and apparently teens live this place too. I always include my opinion of the service, even at a counter service like this. I have always found the cashier to be fast and friendly and the line moved pretty quickly. My usual grub is the slider meal with added tomato, grilled onion, and lettuce. The peach sweet tea is pretty good as a different beverage option. Don't miss that famous HH special sauce! I love to dip my fries in it. For desert I'm often torn between a fried pie and a milkshake. I get a mix of peanut butter, choclate, and banana in my shake. Trust me...if you like those flavors they combine very nicely. Also notice that there is an Alabama side and an Auburn side and take some time to check out the memorabilia on the walls. Another reviewer said this is the best HH location and I may have to concur. I had written off HH after a few trips to another location and was skeptical about coming here but after two visits I was hooked and now I'm saying "this place is really good." So, if you are biased against HH and haven't tried this location, give it a try when you are in the area. Try the sliders and a shake. I think you will like it. read more

Found this place as I was exploring my new home city last night and decided to check it out today during lunch. When I arrived, their parking lot was full and the serving line was extended all the way to the door. The restaurant was filled with a good mix of locals, out-of-towners, and military. Staff was very helpful in explaining what was in the heaven sauce (mustard and ketchup mix), which was awesome (they have it for sale). The cheeseburger and fries were awesome as well. The price was affordable (less than $7 for the #2 meal). Unfortunately I didn't have one of their milkshakes, but I plan to next time. Burger came with Mayo but really tasted amazing. The fresh fixings, soft yet toasted bun really made for a simple yet memorable burger. It reminded me of the 'Health Camp' on the traffic circle in Waco, Texas. It's Old School Good! Fries were Ok. I dipped them in their table side burger sauce. Tasted like Heinz 57 but better. Its hurts me to give two stars, because their burgers are awesome and I really like this chain- here is the problem- their fries are complete garbage. I mean, seriously, as bad or worse than burger king and that is just horribly bad. What pisses me off is I get a great burger, and then they have these nasty cold soggy steak style fries, that even if they were fresh would suck, but the reach into the bin under a heat lamp and they are so cold, bad tasting, and obviously old, it is ridiculous. The only way I can stand to go there is to not get fries at all, they are so bad, and I see lots of other customers dont eat them either- but here is the deal- as good as your burger is if you cant have decent fries I am done with you. i genuinely don't leave bad reviews because i've worked in the food industry and understand the stress. i went through the drive thru today with my mom. we pulled up to the speaker and the lady says something inaudible. my mom asks her to repeat herself and she does not. so she gives our order. after about 3-4 minutes of silence we drive forward due to the line backing up behind us and the lack of cars in front of us. we come to the window and the lady recites the incorrect order so we tell her what ours was, apologizing that we couldn't understand her over the speaker. she then snaps "i told y'all to wait and you ordered anyways" and slammed the drive thru window shut. she proceeded to take our order and give us our food (which was ok, but subpar to their usual). i honestly was shocked by the rudeness given our politeness in realizing we had messed up. very disappointing and made my mom feel terrible about the situation. read more
