Yesterday around lunchtime, I purchased an item here for the first time. It was one of their buns with sesame seeds on top, and with red-bean-paste filling (Sesame Bun with Red-Bean Paste). I planned to have it for breakfast this morning. Verdict? Skip it. The Sesame Bun with Red-Bean Paste filling was a huge Disappointment. It was Stale and the bean paste was Overly Sweet. Frustrating. Unless, it was baked to be consumed in a few hours, but it did not state a "best-by date". The price is around $3 which is the same as Whole Foods' muffins. And by the way, Whole Foods' muffins are delicious (the blueberry one), and they are tasty even if consumed the following day. For all it's worth, the staff at Hamada-ya was courteous. read more

We originally only went here for some grocery but also food court for lunch. Didn't expect there to be a cute little coffee shop! I haven't had my coffee for the day yet so it was perfect. We had our lunch next door and decided to grab some coffee from this shop. What immediately caught my eye was that they had boba!! Any excuse to get boba, I'm in! We got in line, waited a bit behind the people next to me and I kept over hearing that they were out of something. I was REALLY hoping it wasn't boba since I waited till after our meal to get it. Luckily, they weren't out of boba but out of matcha which was fine since I was there for the coffee mainly. We also ended up getting a Strawberry Cheese Danish which was DELICIOUS!! It just melts in your mouth and the strawberries were fresh! The cheese in the middle was so perfect. The iced latte I got with boba was also the perfect strong/sweetness especially since I didn't have my coffee first thing in the morning and really needed that kick. Boba had the good chewiness I expected and wish I got extra! We came back a week later and ended up trying the strawberry croissant with chocolate and it was absolutely delicious. I love how fresh the strawberries are and the chocolate was so perfect! I got the iced hazelnut latte this time with extra boba and was extremely happy about it! Such a perfect drink. I was going to get the cappuccino shake but I think their machine was broken at the time. Other than that, love this bakery and will always grab something from here whenever we visit Mitsuwa. Coffee jelly drink was light and actually has caffeine. it's not just flavored to taste like coffee! It's a pretty generous serving of coffee jelly. I actually sipped up all my milk and still had over a quarter cup of jelly left so I took it home and added another cup of milk lol! The employee there said the coffee jelly drink and the brown sugar boba are both equally popular choices. I will have to go back to try the brown sugar boba. I've also tried their milk soft serve and thought it was pretty good - added extra Cinnamon Toast Crunch and mochi as toppings. This is my little sinful secret go-to whenever I crave for a baked good or pastry. The strawberry stuffed croissant are my usual treat. Both the regular lightly whipped cream version as well as the chocolate whipped cream with light chocolate drizzle on top are simply amazing! I had enjoyed the curry stuffed donut whenever I'm in the mood for a savory carb treat. I highly suggest this place if you want a dessert that's just enough sweetness, but not overly American sweet. This location is much smaller and older compared to the ones in Torrance, Costa Mesa, Irvine. This one is located inside the Mitsuwa complex, plenty of parking, but I agree with other reviewers that the availability of the pastries are hit or miss. The lady that's there is friendly however there's usually a guy there in the mornings that has a chip on his shoulder ALL the time. They have delicious cheesecake and the white bread they sell is a staple in our house. We used to love getting the strawberry croissants too, and we won over many of our friends with them as well, however they have changed their original filling--a delicious cream that was almost like whipped cream-- for something that resembles the frosting they use for their strawberry cakes. They used to use two distinct fillings. This was very disappointing as the fresh cream filling with the flaky croissant (which is now also smaller) and sweet tangy strawberry was absolutely delicious and one of the main reasons we continued to make the trip. There are other goodies sure, and it's nice they've expanded the fruit options in their croissants too, but I hope they consider going back to the original filling for them! read more

Delicious and quite flavorful. Sweet but not too sweet. It's definitely a shareable dessert--highly recommend it! This is a such great gem inside Mitsuwa Marketplace. It's a tiny bakery adjacent to the bookstore. Though not as well-known as some of the Asian bakeries in SoCal like JJ Bakery, 85°c, and Paris Baguette, it offers some delicious items that I find irresistibly good and the quality is consistent. I actually stumbled upon it while waiting for my ramen order at Santouka last week. I got a green tea latte To Go and discovered that there's more to this place than baked goods and coffee which they actually do quite well. I absolutely love their creamed cornet ($2.20) which is a cream puff like pastry, but tubular form. It's flaky and chewy filled with lightly sweet fresh whipped cream and custard. I can probably devour 2-3 of them myself. I know, it's so awful (and soooo not good for my waste line! Hehehe) - but so yummy and worth every caloric intake. And their green tea ice cream is wonderful. Not overly sweet and the matcha is potent yet on point. It's actually soft serve froyo and can be topped with assortment of toppings like red bean, nuts or chocolate chips, mochi, caramel and chocolate sauce for 50 cents extra. Though a bit expensive $3.50 for a small cup, it's quite delicious. I got mochi with mine and really enjoyed it. As for the green tea latte, simply terrific. Green tea latte at Urth cafe is $5 and here it's only $3.50. Sure no artistic floral or animal design on top, but texture and taste is just as good. Soothes the soul... I didn't expect to find good Japanese bakery inside this marketplace. Along with great ramen and good fried tempura, I now have scrumptious desserts to compliment my insatiable appetite. And unlike most of the eateries in the food court, they actually accept credit cards. No more running back to the car and looking for coins in the ashtray...sheeeez! Unlike the Patisseries Japonaises Francaises such as Frances in Little Tokyo, or Chantilly & Bon Jour in Torrance, which pride themselves on making tres hautes patisseries in rather chicly decorated ambiance, Hamada~ya is more of the typical Japanese bakery found in almost every neighborhood in Japan. Most are more than competent, and take pride in creating a more down home style of treats preferred by the majority of Japanese. So Hamada~ya is not the place to have a craving for a refined, subtle Japanese style version of Charlotte Russe, Saint Honore, or Meringata a la Fiorentina. Perusing the choices offered at Hamada~ya, I spied a Karei Pan or Curry Bread in English. However, the "bread" is closer to a donut at least in American English parlance since the dough is fried with a bit of roux thickened curry sauce hidden inside the doughnut which has a bit of Japanese Panko breadcrumbs on the outside of the donut to add a crunchy texture to the softer doughnut like feel. Opening up the inside of the Karei Pan reveals a soft feel of the yeasty fried dough & a release of the brown curry fragrance & oil from the frying. This Karei Pan at Hamada~ya is exemplary to what could be gotten in Japan. Why PAN meaning bread in Japanese? It's the Portuguese word for bread. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to make contact in Japan. They stayed in Japan for almost 90 years until they got kicked out for meddling in Japanese state affairs such as siding with certain Japanese lords to further Portuguese interests when the Japanese lords should have been loyal to the Sho-gun. That and the news that the Japanese Shogunate government got about European nations invading Native American lands, toppling the Aztec & Inca Empires, and enslaving the Native Americans, freaked the Japanese government at the time. In many ways, Karei Pan reminds me of something an Indian cook would create if he were also cognizant of Japanese cuisine. The Indians are very proficient in fried foods such as Pakora, & Puri or fried bread. In fact, the Japanese Karei Pan could be a close analog to having curry stuffed into a Puri & fried. I would pair the Karei Pan, which deserves 4 Yelp stars, with a good dense Japanese beer such as Coedo or Ginga Ko-gen. Both of which are heavy on the hops to add a clean bitter finish to cut the oil in the fried Karei Pan as well as heavier body to match up to the heavier taste & aromatics of the slightly sweetened curry. These beers can be obtained en site at Mitsuwa Market which houses Hamada~ya. I chose the Pumpkin Kuri-mu Pan or Cream Bread as a seasonal food. When I opened the bread apart, there was a sweet, pleasantly yeasty bouquet which was intoxicating with a just baked aroma. The mouthfeel of the bread was soft, pillowy, velvety. The good yeast used also added a great mild, subtle fermented flavour in the bread as well as having a delicate sweetness. This would pair well with a dark tea such as Irish or English Breakfast. However, the pumpkin filling was rather dry & crumbly with bland, insipid flavour that does not enhance the wonderful Hamada~ya Pan. The creme or, in this case, condensed milk was not used generously to add a pleasing dairy flavour, and therefore I would rate it 2 Yelp stars. In my estimation, the pumpkin should have been spiced with some cinnamon, cloves, & ginger to approximate the seasonings in an American pumpkin pie. Or why not be more original & use nutmeg, mace (from the same seed), cardamom, anise, etc. to make for a more interesting treat? I know that only two samples of what Hamada~ya makes do not represent all the baked goods that it carries so my initial rating will be 3 Yelp stars. Perhaps sampling more of Hamada~ya's wares will prove to be more revealing. read more

Authentic Japanese coffee shop/bakery kiosk located within Mitsuwa Marketplace. They offer specialty coffee and tea drinks, and a unique selection of pastries. I was so excited to see a Curry Donut in their case, one of my favorite treats that I can usually only find in Japan. I loved the thick, savory filling (which happens to be vegetarian), but the dough was soggy, oily mush. The Matcha Latte, on the other hand, was one of the best I have ever enjoyed. I ordered it with soy milk, and I am almost certain they use Pearl brand, which is my favorite soy milk of all time. Ultra creamy, with the perfect level of sweetness. The matcha flavor was bold with no residual bitterness-truly the perfect drink. Hamada Ya has remained open during the COVID-19 lockdown. All restaurants in LA have been mandated to close at this point, but I presume they slip through the cracks due to their grocery store location. Staff were friendly, and wore gloves and masks. It's a good place to stop for a quick snack while shopping at Mitsuwa or for dessert after having a meal at one of the gratifying eateries. The shop sells an assortment of Danishes, Japanese pastries, breads, sandwiches, and other baked goods, as well as coffees, teas, and soft serve ice cream. Most, if not all of the shop's offerings are baked fresh daily. These include unique foods like egg salad donuts, curry donuts, and Japanese-style hot dogs. I was here a couple Thursdays ago and grabbed a green tea ice cream on my way out. The ice cream was beautifully dispensed from the machine, piled high inside a clear plastic cup. The bottom of the cup was filled with pieces of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, a nice supplement to provide additional texture and sweetness to the treat. The ice cream itself had great all-around flavor, very true to green tea. Such smooth and creamy consistency. It was absolutely delicious. Service is excellent. The servers are friendly and cute and wear aprons and bandanas. Hamada-ya received an A on its most recent restaurant inspection. read more

Food and drinks taste great, but it doesn't seem management understands how to keep the shop properly stocked with in demand items. The last 6 times I've gone within the past 3 weeks, before noon, they've been sold out of matcha because "it's their most popular item." If that's the case, why not stock more matcha? They're also continually out of boba, and won't make a matcha boba drink without the boba...so, in short, you can rarely get their delicious matcha boba drink because either they're out of matcha, or on the rare occasion that they do have matcha, then they're out of boba and won't make the drink without it. read more

A decent place to stop if you're at Mitsuwa for other reasons, but nothing special to drive out for. Came here for something cold and refreshing after eating ramen from Santouka. Having heard good things about their green tea soft serve, my friend and I both opted to order it. Figuring out where to order was somewhat difficult, as there was no one manning the cash register, but after standing around for a couple minutes, a worker appeared and asked us if we wanted to order. I got the additional topping of red bean, which is a scoop of mushed red bean. Not what I was expecting, but it was tasty nonetheless. My friend's topping of mochi was obviously old though-- always a disappointment. The ice cream itself had a lovely flavor though-- not too strong or weak. I'll probably get the soft serve again the next time I go to Mitsuwa. However, I won't be at Mitsuwa solely for Hamada Ya. read more
