The BEST soft serve green tea I have ever had in my life. No joke. For mine, I added mochi and azuki (red bean) and this, unknowingly, had created the ultimate party in my mouth. Went to pick up pastries for my book club (which was reading a Japanese author that week, so felt appropriate to visit a Japanese bakery). They have a nice mix of traditional (ex. chocolate croissant, Boston Cream donut, cream puff) and unique (ex. curry donut, matcha melon pan) offerings, all of which were stellar examples (fluffy cream, crispy pastry, you get it). The Cream Cornet is A-W-E-S-O-M-E !!! It costs only $2.20 and is like a long cream-puff, but the cream inside is delicious, and perfect, as most Asian pastry/deserts are known for. The outer cone is flaky and crisp, so is really fresh. It's refrigerated, so is a cool desert treat. This little bakery is located in the Japanese Mitsuwa Shopping Market and in the corner spot of the food court adjacent to the bookstore. This is the perfect place to get a desert after you eat in the food court area. I've not tried anything else here, so my review is all about the CREAM CORNET Parking is sometimes difficult, other times easy, and it's located in the Market, so if there's no spaces in the lot, there are street parking alternatives in the surrounding neighborhood. read more

5 stars for the pastries! Cream Cornets - These things are the best. They're different from the standard supermarket / American cream horns - The cream reminds me more of a custard (very fresh and not too sweet or heavy), and the pastry on the outside has a croissant-like texture. I'll have to try the matcha one next time. Chocolate Covered Boston Cream Donut - These are filled with a similar custard as the cream cornet, and covered in a hard shell chocolate. It is a little too sweet from the chocolate but I would still get it again. Good cream to donut ratio also! Strawberry Cheesecake Danish - Very rich with cheesecake and strawberry flavor. Again, super delicious. Would highly recommend eating it right away, since it might get soggy. I'll definitely stop by next time I'm at Mitsuwa. read more

This place is not the same... I have been to the one in Costa Mesa and Irvine and those have been one my go-to bakeries. The selection of pastries are all scrumptious. The green tea ice cream is easily my favorite ice cream, in fact, I just had it the day before I came to this location. That's how much I love it! However, this location was a huge disappointment. The ice cream had too much matcha powder but not enough milk. It tasted like a frozen iced green tea, not in a good way. The recipe was definitely off. The green tea cornet wasn't any better. The outer cone didn't have the same flaky texture and was dry like paper. It probably has been sitting In the fridge for too long. I will just be visiting the other locations instead. read more

I came in with the sole purpose of trying their matcha soft-serve. I am a huge fan of all things matcha (lattes, kit kat, ice cream, milk tea, etc. etc.) I opted for the mixed matcha + vanilla option so my palate wouldn't be dulled by one flavor, and got mochi as a topping (can never go wrong with mochi!) But the square cereal topping in the bottom was a no... I didn't know that was automatically added and I wish I had known beforehand so I could have opted out. But the rest of it was really good so whatever. A bit pricey, but less than what you'd pay at Yogurtland for the same amount (plus Yogurtland's green tea flavor is way duller). Oh, and after asking the cute hapa (95% sure he was hapa!) cashier about the consistency of their boba, I decided to try the coffee boba milk tea. It was solid; they actually use real coffee instead of powder like a lot of boba places. Boba was okay, I would have preferred it to be a little softer. The pudding itself has a delicate feel. The other places I've had pudding feel like a jello texture and it's more chewy than soft. I also enjoy the cilantro chicken sandwich when it's warmed up. It's a simple sandwich, but it is delicious. The bread is great. I personally didn't like the yakisoba bread, but I have yet to find a place where I have liked it. read more

Hamada Ya offers two of my favorite items to the Mitsuwa Food Court: milk tea with boba and curry pan (). Nothing helps to ease the wait for fresh tempura from Hannosuke or a shioyaki bento from Misasa quite like a refreshing boba drink. I like my milk teas more tea-y than milky, so the one here really hits the spot. And of course the curry pan... only $2 for its panko-breaded crispy exterior, fluffy doughy middles, and center filled with hearty Japanese-style curry with plenty of carrot and potato bits. It's not spicy at all, but the flavors are great. And it's not terribly greasy for something that's been deep-fried. Kudos to the friendly staff who are always smiling and offering to warm up my curry pan for me. For the $0.20 difference, I'll save myself the drive to Curry House and just head here while I'm doing my weekly grocery shopping anyway. read more

Picked up some baked goods here to snack on for the weekend. Ended up finishing them all in one day :( I had the fried curry doughnut (looks like a large croquette), croquette bread (two mini potato croquettes baked into a pretzel looking bun), and fried doughnut with boiled egg (large croquette with a season boiled egg). Of the three, the fried doughnut with boiled egg was my favorite. It was crispy but not too oily, soft and warm on the inside, and the boiled egg was probably seasoned or marinated in some soy sauce? This review is entirely for the cream cornets. I wish I had a picture to post for reference, but I always eat them too fast :(. My grandparents live a couple of miles away and I always have to stop by for cream cornets after visiting them.. usually get about 3 or 4 and gorge myself. They're flaky and crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside and the cream is just perfect (and there's a ton of it!) We've gotten a couple other things, too, but the cream cornets can't be beat. I now get very excited every time I see them elsewhere, but these are still my favorite. I'm always worried they'll run out before I get there but it hasn't happened yet (knock on wood). The girls that work there are always super friendly, too. Really glad this little place opened up inside Mitsuwa. read more

I love the cream cornets! They are SO delicious. Flaky and crispy on the outside (you can hear the crunch as you bite into them) and filled with creamy goodness. Furthermore, it's the perfect level of sweetness. I once came here three times in one week for these. The custard here is the best I've had outside of Japan. It's super silky smooth, creamy, and has tons of vanilla seeds swirling throughout. There is even a diggity bomb layer of caramel sauce at the bottom that gets coated all over everything with each spoonful. In addition they sometimes have amazing seasonal items such as grapefruit yogurt tarts and coffee jelly drinks that are pretty much to die for. It's super interesting to me that an amazing place like this is hidden away in a strip mall - it's heaps and heaps better than many other bakeries in town. read more

Located inside Mitsuwa market, this tiny little frozen yogurt, Asian dessert, coffee, tea place is pretty satisfying for a little stand :) Tried the green tea frappe, Mixed match green tea and vanilla yogurt, and the matcha green tea yogurt. If you have a craving for match green tea this is the place to try it. Be warned, on the weekends the parking lot gets pretty full and you'll most likely be parking near the CVS. Stick to the matcha yogurts as they are refreshing and they put a cinnamony cereal at the bottom of your yogurt, which really gives it that extra special yumminess that your mouth needs and craves. My frappe was just ok, as they aren't as flavorful as the yogurts. If I'm ever in the area again, I will just get the vanilla mixed with matcha yogurt, it was soooooo good!! read more

I got a green tea and sweet red bean bread. My favorite breads are from Cake House in K-town, but I've been looking for alternatives on the westside. This is a cute little place inside Mitsuwa Food Court. It could probably be really great, but it just felt a bit run down and like they just didn't really care anymore. The tea was fine, but the bread was a bit dry. I don't know if it's made everyday, but it tasted a few days old, but that could also be due to the fact that they're just left in the case instead of in an airtight container. Was hoping for better. Giving it 3 stars because it's around other shops/restaurants that add to the experience. read more

These people make the very best Boston Cream Donut you will EVER have! It's more like a large cream puff filled with a dense, rich custard. The dark chocolate coating is like Dove and isn't skimpy at all. It melts the minute it contacts your skin. PERFECT!! But the real treat for me are the Spicy Curry Donuts! I actually heat them up for breakfast! a soft donut filled with spicy curry. YES! CURRY!!! So good! The staff are always very friendly and know their products well. So, I finally tried a Melon Pan today from Hamada Ya! And well, let me first tell you what I've learned from this experience after doing some research of my own - melon pan, or melon bread, is very similar to the Chinese Pineapple Bun if not the same with minor variations. Both at its most basic are buns with an enriched cookie layer which gives it its crisp/crunchy top. Its name is derived from the the net-like pattern from the crust on top, and a melon pan generally does not have any melon in it (except they may add a bit of melon essence into the crust for the aroma). With that said, I was a little disappointed in discovering that I couldn't even detect the smallest bit of melon, and I've been on a melon craze lately. Anyway, I kept biting into the bun expecting some kind of custard to eventually be tucked away...but alas, it was never to be found. The top was a little crunchy as it should be, and it was topped off with what I assume to be granulated sugar. It could get a little messy if you aren't careful because it crumbles. The bun itself wasn't as moist or fluffy as the pineapple buns I'm accustomed to having and though I'm not certain if that's how it's supposed to be like, I was turned off by it. I hate dry breads. As for variety, this tiny little "bread bar" located in the middle of Mitsuwa and a busy food court is quite surprising. Boba, coffee, teas, breads, donuts, AND soft serve? I'm impressed. The prices are reasonable (cash only), and it's convenient seeing as how I could grab something quick to go after a meal at a ramen shop or after shopping at Mitsuwa which was what I did today. Parking outside may be a bit hectic around lunch time even on weekdays, but people are always walking in and out so you just have to be patient. Oh!
