More like a 3.5, but I'm rounding up, since a lot of this is bias comparing it with the several NorCal locations that I've been to. I'm a HUGE fan of the NorCal Ume Tea locations. Every time I visit, I always make sure to visit once, if not twice. Super affordable boba, cute cafe with lots of cute merch, AND they have food and snacks. How can you beat that? When we were in the area looking for boba, I saw that there was a Ume Tea nearby (there's only 2 in SoCal), so my friend and I decided to stop by after our visit to the Milpitas location. There's a decent amount of parking in the plaza, but it can get quite busy given the area and the amount of businesses, but you can always do street parking and walk over. It was quite busy for a Sunday afternoon as there were lots of pick up orders and others ordering form the kiosks (they have 3 if you count the tablet on the counter) and waiting for their orders. It's a narrower location with no public restrooms (at least if there was, it'd be behind the employees only door, but I didn't ask). There's some merch on the wall, but not much of it sadly and 1 small statue for photo ops. There's seating, but since the shop is narrow, they're more like benches with small tables. Here is where, I think my bias comes out a bit, the merch here was some left over collaboration merch and some bags and cups I think, but NorCal had several different kinds of plushies, a perfume block, other air fresheners, stickers, plushies, etc. They NorCal locations also had way more for their food/snack menu like fried baby octopus (my favorite), bento boxes and much more (also in terms of how many different types of drinks that they have). It might be because NorCal is the California originator or because each franchise owner has different choices in what they have, but it wasn't as mind blowing. I get it though with raising costs and the limitations of space that they have. I got a passionfruit mango green tea with lychee jelly, 50% sweet (I'd go lower next time since it was pretty sweet) and less ice. Pretty refreshing for a hot summer day. Friend got a purple sticky rice milk tea, 70% sweet. Not bad, and didn't skimp out on the purple rice. Flavor is middle level milk tea. Not bad, hits the spot if you need it, but not mind blowing. I don't think I'll go out of my way to go to this location again, but I might try the other one. My friend and I were having a conversation about this, but maybe Ume Tea didn't enter the 626 BOBA WARS as with how limited they are compared to NorCal, the competition would be much too fierce, but it's so obvious how much the community and locals love them here. read more

Ume Tea is one of the best tea shops on the west side because it is such a bang for your buck. Popcorn Chicken: This was around $10, but I could easily split this over 2 meals. The exterior was crispy and well-seasoned, while the interior was tender and juicy. They were very generous with the amount of chicken, which came in the cutest box. It comes with one free sauce and you could choose between sweet & sour, ranch, etc. Mango Pomelo Sago: Ume Tea serves a solid Mango Pomelo Sago, which was about $6. I loved the inclusion of grapefruit in it as it serves as the perfect contrast against the sweetness of the mango. I have tried other drinks from them as well, such as their teas, which did not particularly stand out to me. Most of their drinks are on the cheaper side though, so I would come back for the drinks when I am feeling sad and broke. I have been gravitating toward the Mango Pomelo Sago drink everywhere I go, so of course I had to try Ume Tea's version. I was actually very impressed by how good it was. Theirs includes coconut milk, which adds a subtle creaminess to balance out the fruitiness of the drink. I generally order my boba at 100% sweet, but the 70% sweet here was plenty for me. They have a fabulous and unique selection of drinks and food which makes the extra drive out of UCLA/Sawtelle worth it - they have great and fresh popcorn chicken and takoyaki! Stopped in this weekend for our first time because we both had our usual Boba craving and wanted to try someplace new. I am happy to say that Ume exceeded expectations and I already want to go back again to try more flavors. As with most Boba places they have a lot of great options on the menu and all different types of drinks. It was really hard to choose just one drink so I ended up choosing two. Parking is pretty easy in this area and pricing is fair. We decided to order via the kiosk and everything that we ordered was ready within 8 minutes. Inside is pretty small, there aren't any tables to eat in, but there are some tables to wait while your food is being prepared. It is definitely more of a to-go type of place. For my first time I wanted to try one of their classics and one of their newer drinks. I ordered the Crème Brûlée Boba and really loved it. It had the flavors that I expected and it was perfectly sweet. I also ordered a new drink which was the Strawberry Yogurt Slush with Crystal Boba. I will say that I prefer traditional or popping Boba more than crystal Boba, but still the liquid flavors in it were very good. I would just replace the crystal Boba if I were to order it again. Ohh Ume..where I like to spend most of my money to get a caffeine jolt. This is my favorite local boba shop because of the drinkable mochi.. no other place in the area compares. The staff is always so helpful and friendly, even when I need adjustments to my drink. I've been coming for years and their drinks are consistently good quality. My usual order is the black ceylon milk tea with boba & drinkable mochi which is the best when the toppings are still warm. The boba is nice & chewy, with a hint of sweetness. Sometimes I go for the green tea jelly which is a nice topping option. I always get 0% sweetness and they always get it right. There isn't much seating here so it's not really a lounge area. There are a couple of long seats for when you're waiting and the wait time isn't too bad. It does get busy, especially after school hours and on weekends. I was worried about the boba being hard but it was perfect. The Taro shake was so good that I would want to go back for more. I've been here before maybe a year or 2 ago and happened to be in the area so I stopped by for a refreshing milk tea! I got 0% sweet so with a salted cream top so that I can add a teeny bit of my own agave at home. A few of the comments were complaining of the 30% sugar being too sweet and I'm very sweet sensitive so this was a good move for me. The tea did indeed have a nice floral note to it and the cream top paired nicely with it. If you don't plan to add your own sweetener later, I wouldn't go for 0% sweet as by itself, it's too milky- stick with at least 30 or maybe ask them to reduce that by a bit. A touch of sweetener actually often brings out the tea flavor in these kinds of drinks. Parking is easy as they have a lot and I recommend you stop by! We came on a late afternoon on a weekday and the place was busy. Service was still swift and friendly. We ordered a regular size Jasmine green milk tea with boba, avocado mango slushy with mango popping boba and white peach oolong milk tea with strawberry popping boba, all in regular size. All of this totaled $21 and change. Both the Jasmine green milk tea and the avocado mango slushy were a hit, however, there the white peach along received and okay review. Not bad for two out of three. All in all, this place was on par with most other boba tea shops.
