mentaiko & spicy salmon

My first time being here & I got the mentaiko & spicy salmon and it was sooo good! Everyone here is also so nice and gives you really good recommendations. Love how it's quick bites that's filling!

First timer but will be back! The Ebi Mayo was my favorite out of the ones I tried! I don't remember exactly what my friend got, one chicken and the mushroom however she loved both of them!

A5 Wagyu

Second time coming to Sunny Blue and was just as good as the first time. I now have my order dialed in so I know what I'm getting every time (Spicy Tuna, Chicken Tori, Miso Beef) and I tried the A5 Wagyu today. The Wagyu was a little expensive ($11) but was worth the try for today. Highly recommend to anyone in the area and will be back as often as possible!

Wow these fresh omusubi are delicious! Served either warm on tray or wrapped to-go in a way that keeps the seaweed crisp. Great snack and affordable around $5-6 each 5/5 Miso Beef was so flavorful and well filled. Balanced umami, saltiness, hint of sweet. A popular option that I would totally get again 4/5 Ginger Pork Curry was a light curry flavor and nice to have later in the evening. Not as flavorful as the beef Tried a bit of the chili eggplant (also stellar flavors here) and a wasabi one (very spice forward). Amazing quick bite or made to order to-go snack! Note no seating inside but a section of parklet to stand outside

Yummy omusubis/Japanese rice balls in the Santa Monica area. These are great for a light lunch or snack. I visited this small store for an earlier lunch on a Saturday. It was decently busy, but the staff prepared the rice balls quickly, so my friend and I got ours shortly after ordering. I got three rice balls: Ebi Mayo, Miso Beef, and Tuna Maya. All of them were tasty. The Ebi Mayo one had shrimp and it was kind of tangy which I was not expecting, but still very good. I can't point out a favorite one as I liked all of them equally. Also loved the furikake or mayo toppings on them. If you're eating them on the spot, you have to eat them quickly before the crispy seaweed gets too soggy from the rice. These 3 rice balls were decently filling for me and came out to about $15 for all of them. Would recommended as a solid Japanese rice ball spot in the area.

It's all street parking and it can get tough to find a spot. Inside is small and no indoor or outdoor seating. I got the Spicy Salmon and Tuna Mayo. Both were so good. It was packed with flavor and the perfect snack! Recommendation(s): - Spicy Salmon - Tuna Mayo Service: 5/5 Tip(s): - Street parking only - No indoor or outdoor seating

We usually take to go! Super easy and quick. Always have stock of our favorites! I'm Santa Monica and great picnic or beach snack! Good grab and go place for a quick lunch too. Small shop and their menu design is fun! Wooden boards just like in Japan hahaha. When we take home or eat the next day, sometimes we separate the rice and nori and microwave the rice for 15-20 seconds. The instructions for how to open the onigiri for the perfect crispy rice is clear and intuitive! (To most lol not my mom) It is so smart to design the packaging this way as you keep the nori fresh and crispy and not soggy from the rice and sauce. Then when you eat you wrap it. Just like the convenience stores in Japan. Can you tell I miss Japan lol First time trying the sides. Potato salad is sooooo good with the sweet apple pieces. Pickled burdock goes perfect with all the onigiri! Must get these sides

Sunny Blue is within walking distance from the beach with nearby paths taking you to Ocean Front Walk. There's meter parking lots behind Main Street. No indoor dining which is unfortunate as their Dine-in Omusubi needs to be eaten within 20 minutes. For the food: Sunny Blue specializes in Handcrafted Omusubi. I chose Dine-in Option, which makes for pretty Instagram pics, but difficult to eat. The seaweed is too thin to support the filing. Grab chopsticks to eat the fallen innards. Should be using thicker hand roll style seaweed. The rice to filling ratio is off - way too much rice. Even with same filing amount I'd prefer less rice for more balanced flavor. Take-out Option seems to be convenient store style Onigiri and I think it would've been better. The lychee green tea was quite nice.

Hijiki (vegan - gluten free)

Visited Sunny Blue in Venice on a Friday and tried the veggie omusubi with hijiki (vegan and gluten-free)--it was absolutely delicious. The spicy mayo added just the right kick without overpowering the flavor. The shop itself is quite small, but the staff were very friendly and welcoming, which made the experience feel personal. I appreciated seeing one of the workers wearing gloves while preparing the food--it's a small detail, but it really matters. That said, I did notice another staff member who moved from working the register directly to handling food with bare hands. He should have washed his hands thoroughly prior to returning to help make the food. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit and would definitely come back, but I hope management takes note and ensures consistent food handling practices across the team.

Just a quick update... Visited on Mother's Day for the second time. The first time we ordered to go. This time we ordered to eat right away. I had no idea there was a difference. I thought to go was good, I had no idea what I was missing out on. When you order to go, they are individually wrapped in plastic. The seaweed appears to be tougher in texture than when you order to eat it right away. My daughter ordered 10 of them for the two of us. She ordered all of the vegetarian ones plus a few extras. It was way too much food, but it's always nice to have these as leftovers to take home. We ate them while standing on the sidewalk in front of the little eatery. The rice fluffy, lightly sticky and of the perfect consistency. They were absolutely delicious! Our favorites were the Eggplant Chili Miso, the Miso Mushroom and the Lucky Cat.

Miso beef onigiri

My onigiri fell apart once it was handed it to me. It wasn't made well. I waited over ten minutes for one onigiri. I got the miso beef and it tasted like the beef bowl from Yoshinoya which I didn't mind but then it wasn't that special. All in all, a disappointing experience.

miso beef and sunny blue curry

My friend recommended me this place, so I decided to try it. I got the miso beef and sunny blue curry. I liked the miso beef more. They were pretty tasty, but more of a snack. 2 of them came out to $12, but I wasn't full. There was no where to sit and eat, so I just ate it standing at the bus stop.

Kara Tuna & Miso Mushroom

So good!! A good size for a good price & they're so delicious! Can't wait to come back and try more!

From the moment we sat down, everything was just perfect. The sushi was absolutely outstanding -- fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. The sauces were on another level, perfectly complementing every single bite. Everything we ordered was delicious, and you can tell real care goes into every dish coming out of that kitchen. The ambiance was really lovely too -- warm, comfortable, and inviting. The kind of place where you just settle in and feel good being there. It made the whole evening that much more enjoyable for the whole family. Now here's what made this visit truly special -- there was a robot server delivering sushi right to the table! My 2-year-old was completely glued to it -- wide eyes, the biggest smile, entertained the entire meal. As any parent knows, keeping a toddler happy at a restaurant is half the battle, and Mikomi made that effortless and fun. The human staff were also incredibly warm and attentive, making us feel genuinely welcomed the whole time. If you want top-tier sushi and a dining experience that's fun for the whole family, Mikomi Sushi is an absolute must. We will definitely be back! P.S. -- My wife loved it so much that she visited twice on her own while I was at work. I think that says everything you need to know.

It's a small place, but the energy is always good. The first time we had an energetic and friendly hostess. This time we had a server named Cami (hope I spelled it right). And she was super bubbly and really on top of serving us. It was a busy Mother's Day and everything happened quickly. The food quality is really good. It's an expensive place to eat off happy hour. But I could tell the difference in even the edamame. The seated mackerel is my go to because it's super fun. The sashimi looked amazing though I didn't get any. The decor inside is nice. Ambiance is good. We'll definitely be back. And maybe one night it'll be for a nice dinner, not happy hour. But again, expensive so that's a consideration.

It is beautifully paced, perfectly portioned, and thoughtfully prepared. The service is exceptional. They consistently bring everything out promptly, and they always remember the small details, like bringing me extra ginger without having to ask. It's efficient without ever feeling rushed. One of my favorite things to do is swap the crab hand roll for scallops, in my opinion, the scallops are the standout and absolutely worth the substitution. They're delicate, buttery, and perfectly balanced with the warm rice. Also, the sauce from the first tuna appetizer is so good that I intentionally save it to dip other pieces in throughout the meal. It elevates everything. Every visit feels seamless, delicious, and reliable. It's simple, high quality sushi done exceptionally well. It involves a sashimi course, seven orders of nigiri and two hand rolls. So the reason they call it the don't think, just eat is that they rush you through the whole process. Everything came out within 40 minutes. I barely had time to take photos and eat before they were back asking for my plate. And some of the sushi did not taste right. It was a little fishy and slimey. I've done omakase and sushi before and this was not the best quality. I wouldn't say we were full because it was good but because they were making you eat so quickly. I wasn't sure if they were just caring more about turning tables until I saw a couple drinking a single bottle of wine the entire time were were being rushed. So maybe it was just this specific course they don't want you to pace yourself. I heard great things so I'm just disappointed.

I have been here twice, and this place is seriously good…read more My first visit was fantastic. We were on a girls' weekend in L.A. and spent the day touring my daughter's friend around all the famous landmarks the city has to offer. After driving out to the Santa Monica Pier, we had worked up a serious appetite. A quick Yelp search led us to this ramen restaurant, and we whipped the car around and made a beeline straight for it. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted and seated on the patio. We were hoping for seats near the fire pit, but those are definitely a hot commodity and fill up fast. Our server was quick, friendly, and helpful with menu suggestions. I ordered the Spicy Vegan Creamy Ramen. The menu offers a wide variety of options, and I was really impressed with how accommodating they are for meatless diners. They have several vegetarian and vegan choices, and most dishes can be modified for most dietary preferences. Our food came out quickly, piping hot, and beautifully presented. One bite of my ramen and I was instantly in heaven. It was so good that I finished the entire bowl in record time. I would have ordered a second one, but I was completely full. I honestly feel like I could eat this every day of my life and never get tired of it. Our server kept our glasses full and checked on us regularly. The service was top-notch and made a relaxing end to a long day of sightseeing. It truly was an awesome experience. On my second visit, I was in town with my family, and I told them we were not leaving L.A. without eating here first. We came on a Saturday, and the restaurant was pretty packed. We waited about 15 minutes for a table, and to my surprise, we scored the fire pit seats I had wanted so badly the first time. Sitting next to the fire, feeling the warmth and watching the flames dance in the evening air, made the experience even more special. The second visit was just as great as the first. Great service, a relaxing atmosphere, and incredible food from start to finish. I truly enjoyed every minute of it. What more could you ask for? I highly recommend Jinya Ramen Bar. Trust me, it is absolutely worth it.

We were lucky to find a metered parking that already had money in it, yay! There are a bunch of eateries on this street as well. It's a small restaurant inside, but more space outside. Not that busy at all, there were only 2 other parties dining at the same time as us during prime dinner time. I saw they were running a Demon Slayer promotion and I wanted the free spoon haha. So I ordered the Tokyo Yatai Ramen and my friend ordered the Birria Ramen. The waiter or owner(?) who talk our order was also very nice! Very quick and efficient with our order. It didn't take too long for our ramen to be prepared. First glance, it doesn't look like your traditional ramen. It actually looks more Chinese style ramen. Especially the noodles? The texture is not quite the same as traditional ramen shops (and I have been to Japan). The ramen bowl itself was pretty simple, strong flavors from the chicken broth, the pork itself was pretty alright. It's honestly pretty standard but does not have a Japanese feel to it. I tried my friend's Birria Ramen and it's literally tastes like a taco in a bowl haha, which is pretty accurate. So even my Chinese friend likes the birria ramen because it reminds of her this Chinese instant noodle she always has lol. So I guess meaning in a good and bad way, but she still enjoyed it. Overall, the whole experience was not bad. I do only see JINYA in the more 'whiter' communities, so I find this to be not very authentic Japanese ramen. Also it's pricy for what it is when I can get an authentic bowl for $16.

The pasta was easily some of the best we've had outside of Italy -- simple, authentic, and executed at a very high level. It genuinely felt like being transported back to Italy. Every dish was balanced, fresh, and memorable. Our server, Kiara, delivered exceptional hospitality. She made us feel welcome, relaxed, and genuinely taken care of the entire evening. She's a great example of how service should be done. We enjoyed it so much that we were recommending the restaurant to people on our way out. There was a situation during our visit that concerned me at the time. I won't go into details here, but what matters most is how it was handled. Shortly after, I was contacted directly by the regional manager. He had already reviewed the situation internally and addressed it promptly. Our conversation was thoughtful, professional, and focused on doing the right thing. What stood out most is their philosophy: they're not just in the business of serving pasta -- they're in the business of taking care of people. That clearly extends to both their guests and their team. That level of accountability and leadership is rare, and it turned a great experience into one that I respect even more. Kiara absolutely represents the standard they aim for, and we'll definitely be back.
