Chicken Chow Mien - Mostly cabbage - Google Pics of Chicken Chow Mien to see how it should be - Tasteless
Yvonne G.

My girlfriend took me out to Haluwa for a special evening and some Chinese food. She'd been there before their flood (around 2019 or so) and the restaurant has just been recently "renovated" and reopened. We thought we'd give them a try. Upon arrival, we were escorted into a dining room that felt like being brought back to 1976. Painted plywood booths, apparently recently reupholstered, but old well-worn painted walls. The "silverware" was cheap metal, terribly flimsy and thin. The dishes were mismatched old heavy ceramic. We were given an old-style "plastic sleeve with paper inserts" menu. Trying to make the most of it, we decided to try several dishes, knowing we'd have plenty of leftovers to take home. We ordered: chicken wings, chicken fingers, chicken lo mien, chicken fried rice, chicken chow mien, and lemon chicken dinner. The waitress had to come back and ask about the lemon chicken because she said "the kitchen never makes that" (it's listed 4th on their dinner menu...) Chicken Fingers - probably the best food we were served - cooked as you'd expect from most Chinese restaurants - tasted good. We had to ask for duck sauce to dip it in. Chicken Wings - looked good but a bit undercooked - expected somewhat crispy but they were not. Overall, they tasted alright. Chicken Lo Mien - VERY dark in color - not much taste. Chicken Fried Rice - VERY dark in color - also not much taste. Chicken Lo Mien - NOT EVEN CLOSE To what we expected! If you Google pics of chicken lo mien, you'll see noodles with chicken and veggies. This was just some cabbage with a couple of bamboo shoots and some rubber chicken. Tasteless... Lemon Chicken - fried chicken with not much sauce - rubbery chicken, very little taste. Overall, we were very disappointed. Looks and feels like a cheap restaurant surviving on their lounge regulars to keep the doors open. The food is a second thought. If you're looking for Chinese food - this is strictly a last resort! Try another restaurant!

Nice Mai Tai here. I'm so happy this place is open again.

I'm really happy this place is open again. Just got a PuPu platter and some drinks but everything was very fresh.

The Haluwa seems to be a popular nighttime haven for the 30 something and way up crowd. Located next to Shorty's in the Nashua Mall, this place is similar to the Jade Dragon in Merrimack, where they serve up a Chinese menu and offer live entertainment, DJ and karaoke in the lounge. The dimly lit lounge has a full cocktail bar, comfy seating, and performing area. I stopped here for a late Thursday night dinner on the way back home. The place was fairly busy because it was karaoke night! On Fridays, there are live bands and there is never a cover charge at the Haluwa! This review is for the food. I asked to be seated in the dining room, which was empty and has plenty of booth and table seating. The menu offers a good selection of Chinese dishes including Polynesian and Szechuan dishes. 21 Luncheon Combinations ($4.75-$6.75) are offered 11:30AM-3:30PM (Mon-Sat) and as well as 9 Dinner Combinations ($9.50-$10.50). The Pu Pu Platter for 2 which offers a sampling of appetizers comes out to the table flaming. If you don't care for Chinese food, an American menu is offered including sandwiches, chicken, fried scallops, and more, all served with French fries and a tossed salad. An older waitress did a good job taking care of my table, who brought out ice water, hot tea, bread with duck sauce and hot mustard. I started with a bowl of Hot & Sour Soup ($3.75), which was very spicy, but good. For dinner I had the Dinner Combo 6 ($9.50): Roast Pork Lo Mein with pork fried rice and 6 chicken fingers. The pork fried rice was covered in lots of soy sauce, no good. The chicken fingers were greasy and fried golden brown and very crispy. The lo mein (medium wide noodles) was pretty good and tasty. While I was eating my dinner, I could hear the DJ and karaoke going on in the lounge. I heard an older guy croon the 1970s One Hit Wonder "Magic" by Pilot. It was sooooo bloody awwwful! I wish I could SOUND THE GONG! "Oh ho ho it's Magic....." Just imagine the character Bill Dauterive (the bald guy in the white tank) from "King of the Hill" singing drunk karaoke and that's exactly how this guy in the lounge sounded. "Oh ho ho it's Magic..." I wanted to pull off a Magic trick and disappear! Stop the torture! I had the food packed up, quickly settled the check, and did my magic trick-poof! Some good rock & roll in the ride got me back on track.

Good old school Chinese food. Also won't break the bank. The egg rolls are right from China Town.

Wow. Came here last night and just have to write a review…read more I have been drinking and preparing kava for a few years. Always wanted to go to a kava bar, but the east coast never really had this. Last night the stars aligned. We came in not knowing what to expect. We were warmly greeted by Olivia (kava-tender), who explained the menu and brought us a small shell of kava to try. The Polynesian mule is mind-blowingly good. It was so good, we did 2 rounds of this. Definitely will be back to try more drinks. The live music was also amazing. Very talented musician-- played a lot of Grateful Dead, and even Alice's Restaurant. The vibe is very chill, while also warm and welcoming. For context: I am a non-drinker of alcohol, and despise bars/being around loud drunk people. This is a totally different experience, in the very best ways.

The owners husband and wife are very nice and knowledgeable on Kava when they speak you can feel the passion that they have for not only their business but for their beverages. I had the traditional Kava bowl, it's earthy and served on a shell ( maybe coconut) with a small wedge Of pineapple as a chaser, I also tried a lavender tea it was very good you can definitely taste the lavender. This place is a must try in my opinion the ambience, the beverages , the people all make me want to go back.

I should have been more specific- she gave me one of those blocks that take up the whole glass. Not what I wanted but I can deal. Then she eye balls a double pour to about an inch up the glass with a piece of ice that leaves no room for anything else. Humph. I can deal. I am there to have a great smoke I've been wanted to smoke for a while. Guess what- the famous 10$ cutting fee. Hmm. I didn't see any sign or anything- just being informed of it now. Okay well let me buy a smoke. I smoke what I like to smoke- not to adventurous- there humi is full of brands I've never smoked or smoked before I found out what I liked. I don't recognize these brands. The bartender was a young women. She lead me to the humi. I say just give me a 10 $ londres from Nicaragua. She tells she has no idea what I'm talking about. She doesn't know anything about the smokes they sell. So I say let's look for something long skinny. That Opus was one of the greatest cigars I've smoked in a while. Grumpy's is on my home from work and would be a regular winter stop for me but the lights where too bright, my double was 4 sips, the 10$ cutting fee means they can't stay in business otherwise. I don't think I'll be back cause they don't sell opus/padron/hupman. They do have Drew Estates Liga Private line.

The humidor is kept filled to capacity and all the sticks I've smoked out of it have been perfect. The place is clean! There is nothing worse than an ashy lounge. We've been there a couple times before though and I should have known to make reservations. We ended up sitting at the bar where the bartenders were great. The drinks are outstanding here! I decided to get an Old Fashioned with Buffalo Trace and Mike makes a phenomenal old fashioned! I had 3 of them which I usually don't do. I was also impressed with his knowledge of bourbon and his attention to detail. My wife had an espresso martini which is so good here. For food, we started with chicken lemongrass dumplings, Brussels sprouts, and Parmesan truffle fries, which were all delicious! Dumplings were perfect sharing size and light. I then got the grilled cheese with bacon which was such a great recommendation from the stella staff and my wife got the orchard salad with grilled chicken. We were both extremely satisfied. We went with the donuts for dessert which were excellent. Melissa made my wife a Ben's Banana martini (had the perfect amount of caramel) and she was obsessed! It's definitely going to be a regular spot for us! Highly recommend!

On a Saturday evening mid October we stopped in hoping for a table but the place was busy so we weren't sure what the wait would be. We walked in and the hostess immediately from the start, before we had a chance to say one word, was snarky, rude and very unpleasant. No hello. No welcome. No smile. Nothing. She asks if we had a reservation, I told her unfortunately we didn't. Her immediate response was to say they didn't have anything and wouldn't for the rest of the night and even if the reservation app says there's a table she wouldn't be accepting it and seating us it in an irritated tone. So ok, was that last part necessary?! How rude. I was shocked and said "really?! Wow. That's how you are choosing to respond?" To which her reply was to say with an attitude and not bothering to even look up or back at the bar, "well you can sit at the bar if you want but you won't find anything." At this point I was disgusted and totally turned off from this place so we left. I sent a message via the website to management, but never received a response. We won't be back. Won't be recommending the place to anyone. What a shame. Will happily be spending our money and time elsewhere.
