In September 2021 I got to visit 3 wineries in Paso including Halter Ranch, which was the most beautiful setting to drink wine! We had our tasting on the patio which overlooks vine covered hills and is a great place to take photos. We had a reservation and were seated as soon as we got there. Great tasting service, the woman who served us the wines was friendly, extremely knowledgeable and fun. She made sure we all had a great time. I tried one glass of her recommendation-a white wine-Very delicious! Everyone else really enjoyed their full tasting (I was the driver) which was a combo of reds and whites. We went to Halter Ranch because it was recommended by one of our friends. We did their Ranch flight for tasting and our sommelier was Brandon. I liked their 2017 Anchestor wine the best. We also had a charcuterie board and a Halter Ranch burger. The charcuterie board was good, an excellent balance between meats, cheese and fruit. The Halter Ranch burger was actually one of the best burgers I've had in awhile. It was juicy, cooked perfectly medium rare and melted in your mouth. OMG! This place was Faboo! Now it's even better. The member lounge which was great, above the winery has been replaced by the member garden. Now we sit in a lovely outdoor space under lovely trees and besides a cheese and charcuterie board we can also get lovely pizzas and even a burger. The Margherita Pizza is fantastic. Simple, crispy. The wines are still top notch. The new setting is gorgeous. And given that this winery is totally Green, this is the place to come to. Bring friends and family. And this time we actually had another wonderful wine steward who didn't waste our time by going thru all the wines' properties. We know them well and we didn't need that. Forty-seven Roadsters ended a cruise through the back roads of Paso Robles, at the beautiful Halter Ranch Winery. We were greeted with a gourmet box lunch, home made chocolate chip cookies and very friendly servers. The beautiful rambling patio, was surrounded and shaded, by majestic scrub oak trees, blooming natives plants, comfy furniture and fireplace. We had the opportunity to enjoy the private tasting room and purchased several bottles of the light & crisp Rose' and the full bodied Cabernet. We will be back to try out the public tasting room on the other side of the very cool covered bridge. This winery would be a wonderful venue for a wedding! read more

Ranch Flight ($35/person): 2018 Grenache Blanc 2020 Rose 2018 Syrah 2018 Cab 2018 Ancestor (bordeaux blend) Silver Label ($50/person): 2019 Viognier - a laudable effort with great nose, mediocre palate 2018 Cuvee Alice (Rhone blend) - over done and lacks character definition 2018 Block 22 Syrah - poignant secondary notes, with aged/dried fruit that will improve over time 2018 Tannat - Madiran varietal that is gaining some popularity in warm climate regions 2018 Ancestor (looks familiar) - most balanced wine on the list There were 'bonus' pours which our server knew nothing about because it wasn't in 'his flight', and as for the flight pours, he tried to analogize them to super heros which I thought failed miserably because a) I am not 12 years old and b) it made no logical sense anyway. Our seating had wonderful views of the vineyards and surrounding landscape, but did get too warm as we approached the noon hour. Instead of reseating us inside or under and outdoor room with rooftop, they turned on an aged fan with trickling A/C, which to me, seemed more appropriate for a trailer park, not an elegant tasting room. We went to Halter Ranch on a wine tour through Paso. This winery is BEAUTIFUL! Driving over the covered bridge and through the gates was magical. Once we made our way inside we were greeted by a hostess, which was really our designated pourer. We got Karlee and we are so glad we did. She was so friendly and very knowledgeable about the wines and the property. The line up was tasty and we ended up purchasing couple bottles which waived our tasting fee. Our party of 9 visited Halter Ranch winery and had a wonderful experience. First, the tasting room and grounds are stunning! We had lunch and wine tastings in a gorgeous private room that opened to an outdoor patio. The service was friendly and accommodating. For lunch we enjoyed several dishes. We had 2 types of salads ( spring and Pea burrata) both very tasty. Also appreciated the crisp, fresh truffle and herb fries! Our extended weekend getaway to Paso Robles concluded with a visit to Halter Ranch. We came here through the thorough research and recommendation of our friend. After looking through the website and countless photos on yelp, we agreed that this would be a beautiful and scenic place to do some wine tasting. We came here on a Sunday afternoon with our party of 5. We noticed that the wine tasting indicated that tasting is waived with the purchase of 2 bottles. The tastings were pretty pricey, ranging from $35 for the Estate flights and $50 for the Silver Label tasting. We ended up having 4 tastings. The server was very knowledgeable and informed us of the history of each wine, the notes to expect, and what to pair it with. Each of us also got an entree and a side. I ended up getting the Halter Ranch Burger ($16), Manchego Fries ($10), and Miniature Potatoes. Somehow my medium burger was more raw than the medium rare burger my friend got (he asked for his without a certain item, so it wasn't swapped around). The meat was a bit dry and unseasoned. The miniature potatoes were good, though the creme fraiche was a bit overpowering. We all agreed that the fries were the best part of the food. While we were chatting it up and drinking, we noticed quite a swarm of wasps coming onto our table. At one point, my friend stopped conversing to swat away the invaders that flying around his food. I, personally, saw this single wasp fly onto my burger, walk towards the meat, and take a bite of the meat, before I crushed it in front of the server with my fork. Yes - I don't like to share food. I'd rather we just order two. We looked online and it appears that the wasps are essential in helping produce the wine. Well, it would be nice if something could be done (maybe some type of netting?) to keep the wasps away. My other friend and I each purchased a $40-$50 bottle of wine. After we were rang up for the wine, we were told that it would be 2 bottles of wine per tasting. Oof. Well, we didn't want to end the trip with public upset, so we just decided to throw money at it so it would go away. It was a bit disappointing that we still had to shelve out about $200 additional dollars because of that misunderstanding. Maybe it was our fault for being presumptuous. All-in-all, you come here for the scenery, and not because of the food. I would say the wine is enjoyable, but comes with a hefty price tag. read more

Worst tasting experience I have had in Paso Robles. I have worked in restaurants and bars myself and I get when someone calls off it can be chaotic but today I was ready to join the wine club and now after lunch and tasting I won't be returning. I come up every spring and fall to pick up my wine clubs in Paso. I typically stop at Halter Ranch after my club pick up at Tablas Creek. I guess because I was a single African American woman tasting versus a table of 4 or more of white guests. It was clear my business was not a priority. Under cooked burger. Waiting for wine. No engagement at all with the person pouring the wine he just literally pouring and rushing off to his tables of 4. Lovely winery, beautiful scenery and picture taking. We stop in for some small bites and tasting during our day. The charcuterie board was absolutely perfect. All was going well with our time until the table next to us ordered the fish (Halibut) PLEASE do yourself a favor and take this off your menu. I found MY Ancestor at Halter Ranch. What a wine! This is such a fine example of the Paso Robles wine region and its distinctive wines. Beautiful setting. We had a great host who gave us insights into the owner's commitment to sustainability, the landscape (were told and shown California's oldest oak, the ancestor,) and good wines. I want to meet this billionaire too for I admire what he is doing here! Stunning tasting room with amazing views. Was also impressed with CDP wine at a lower price point. But Ancestor? Wowed by it. At top of hill, the ancestor tree. Hillside of vines in the glistening late afternoon slanted light. At bottom of hill are amazing olive trees. Our billionaire owner saved them and has a commitment to other sections of olive trees too. Awesome. Enter via covered bridge? How romantic! Drive in glorious January sun on scenic roads to get here. Beautiful. Dionysus is here! The Great Spirit is here! I just did not like the Rose we started with. Halter Ranch was another winery that was recommended by my boss. Although it was drizzling, it didn't stop us from stopping by on our way from Calcareous Winery. It's located in the heart of the Paso Robles Westside Adelaida District. We did the $20 tasting and it was waived with a two bottle purchase. This place is amazing, more on the upscale side (comparable to Daou) but less expensive. The tasting room is nice, with floor to ceiling windows, elegant and had a good variety of wines on their wine tasting menu. We enjoyed our time here, althought we didn't get to take a tour of the property, we will come back here again. We highly recommend this winery for anyone who is planning to visit Paso Robles. There are so many fabulous wineries in Paso Robles, but this trip we hit up Halter Ranch (tasting fee: $20/pp waived with two bottle purchase). The winery came highly recommended by the ladies at nearby Pasolivo Ranch (a nearby olive oil farm that also offers tastings). Halter Ranch didn't disappoint. The tasting room is located across the stunning covered bridge, adjacent to the winery. Two smaller tasting rooms accommodate private events and group tastings. We stuck to the indoor patio with a large fireplace and a variety of couches, chairs, and tables. The outdoor patio features a large fireplace, and stellar views over the vineyard. There were people just hanging out all day -- some with their dogs and clearly they weren't going anywhere! Sadly, we had a long drive back to LA. But we grabbed a few bottles to enjoy once we got home. They also offer shipping if you're traveling far -- if buying a case, shipping is included. Or a $10 flat rate for shipping in California (if you're buying 1 - 11 bottles) and $20 flat rate on out-of-state orders (1 - 11 bottles). read more

We have been members here for many years. In 2020 we noticed a huge changed in the customer service after they fired everyone but the wine marker. After our visit today it toke to drop the membership. They don't offer anything special anymore to wine club members, was waiting for a glass today and kept being told "someone will be right with you" for 23 minutes and then the server was very inattentive not to just use but to the entire counter. We were gonna buy our typical 5 cases of silver label wood but not this time as the service has gonna away. read more

Though I knew Halter Ranch asked for reservations to taste, my husband and I were in the area and I wanted to show him their beautiful facility, so we went on a quiet Monday afternoon hoping to be able to just buy a glass and enjoy the nice weather. We were greeted warmly by the lovely woman at the reception desk (I didn't get her name) and seated on the patio. As someone who works in a wine tasting room, I recognize the value of showing a guest you're glad they chose to visit, sharing the stories about your wines with genuine passion and helping a guest get the most out of their visit. Our server, Cassie, was just that. She was knowledgeable, attentive, enthusiastic and engaging, and I could tell she really enjoyed what she was doing. Though I understand the recent trend among some wineries to strictly require reservations and limit visitors to expensive "experiences, I also believe those wineries risk alienating new visitors who could have been new converts or even members. I was so encouraged to see that Halter Ranch still values the flexibility that allows those who spontaneously visit without reservations to be welcomed when possible. Good job!!! read more

We recently arranged for a tasting and a tour at Halter Ranch Vineyard, and the experience was exceptional! Brice acted as our guide for the tour, and his knowledge and enthusiasm for the property and their wines came through loud and clear. Halter Ranch is a beautiful vineyard, with lovely buildings crafted using stone "quarried" right from the ground of the vineyard itself. Apparently in a by-gone Era this valley was underwater; Brice showed us a number of the building stones that had embedded fossils from years long past. After the tour we did a tasting, and I was quite surprised that both the whites and the reds were highly enjoyable - that's fairly impressive given the fact that I'm something of a red wine snob ;-) Tip: The $20 tasting fee will be waived with a minimum purchase of two bottles. It wasn't at all hard finding two bottles to purchase - I actually got half a case of their 2016 Ancestor for special occasions. Ancestor is Halter Ranch's Flagship wine; it's a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet (70%), Petit Verdot (19%), and Malbec (11%). The taste of the wine is powerful and rich, with a very silky mouth-feel and surprising smooth tannins for such a young wine. I look forward to enjoying this find after it's aged a few years in my home "cellar". In summary, Halter Ranch is a beautiful winery with a lovely vineyard and a delicious selection of wines. Worst service I have experienced ever. They aren't deserving of my money and probably not yours. I went with my cousin, we were ignored by the wait staff for over 30 minutes. They served others who came in after us. I think because we are older women, they didn't care about their service to us. Others have had similar experiences. The managers need to take note about what they are trying to do, if young elite is all you care about, it's up to you. But that is crappy in general. I will never step foot on stupid low class winery, their wine tastes awful anyway. Be real and treat all people with respect. If I could give no stars I would. read more

I loved the long drive to this winery and I finally turned in the driveway to follow the sign that pointed to wine tasting. Being a first-timer, I only saw the closed gate across the bridge and didn't drive far enough ahead to see the sign that said the gate would automatically open. I slowly backed up, thinking that I was supposed to park near the house where there were other cars, and hit one of the low boulders lining their driveway. Boohoo. Nicely messed up my rear bumper. These are the moments when a backup camera would have really come in handy. An employee was passing by and told me I could definitely go through the gate. Such is life. Trying to put all that aside, I really enjoyed the beautiful views from the top, with the leaves all gold and red. I went inside for a $20 tasting of their red wines. They have a lovely patio out back, but I did my tasting inside where they have a wall of windows so that you can enjoy the panorama while sipping your wine. Marguerite poured for me and we had a great conversation about the wines, the property, the range of tours they offer and, most importantly, all the amazing conservation efforts the owner is involved with. I was thrilled to hear about that. I was also very impressed with the wine. Halter Ranch, boy have you changed! I had been to Halter a half dozen times in what seems like my past life. I mostly stumbled upon it while driving and getting semi-lost at that weird Y in the road. The tasting room was once in a kind of mobile home adjacent to the Arachnophobia House (or so I've been told). It had a wonderful charm and quaintness to it. Fast forward to now (almost ten years later) and this tiny tasting room has grown to a behemoth. We're talking covered bridges greeting you to a winding road. Up the hill you go and large open and airy tasting room greets you. This Saturday late mid-morning we found ourselves amidst a large number of other patrons. It was difficult to find a place to taste. We all bunched up and made it work. $20 tasting fee was paid, which is the local the norm. On this occasion the wines just didn't blow me away. Perhaps it was my palette, but nothing made me feel like I needed to purchase a bottle. In the past, I've loved their Rose (Grenache, Moved, and a touch of Picpoul). The Picpoul is an interesting varietal and if you haven't tried it, you must. Halter does have a 100% Picpoul Blanc that is offered in certain years. It's not my favorite, but it doesn't have interesting qualities. They also make a Picpoul sparkling if that strikes your fancy. Halter has grown into a mega-winery. And the views are pretty spectacular. You don't want to miss this place, but take a moment and appreciate it's meager beginnings as you drive past the front. read more

This winery was amazing! We did not have reservations, we were passing by and just took a chance they might have room for 2, and we are glad we did. They sat us at the bar, which was the best seats in the house, the view was so amazing, it was raining and we got to see a rainbow appear. We were so impressed with this high-end winery. What a grand entrance onto the grounds - you drive over a bridge, the gates open up and you see hills of vineyards in front of you. Tastings were either $35 or $50 per person and appetizers were not cheap. But you are paying for the ambiance. The only complaint was that our server was young and pleasant but she got got carried away chatting with another table excessively, not conscious that we were waiting for our next pour.
