Somethings you really shouldn't do on the cheap. You know, things like toilet paper, razor blades, shellfish, running shoes...and haircuts. You do get what you pay for, and a $10 haircut looks like, well, a $10 haircut. The haircut I just got at Halftime today set me back $30, but it sure looks great. Lucho was my barber and he took the time to listen to what I wanted. He considered the shape of my skull and made some recommendations that sounded like he knew what he was talking about. He took his time and gave me the best haircut I've had in months. I like the manly decor of the place. I didn't have an appointment, but the wait didn't seem long. I watched the Huskers kick the crap out of Colorado on one of the flatscreens. Go Big Red! I very much prefer getting my haircut by a real barber. Got the beard, ear hair and eyebrows trimmed and got a straight razor shave of the old neck. I will be back again when I start getting scruffy, for sure. read more

I'm so happy I gave this place a second chance. The first time I came I walked in hoping to get a quick haircut. It was a Thursday afternoon so I figured there wouldn't be many people. The receptionist told me that someone would be ready in about 10 minutes. 10 minutes later still nothing... I waited for almost 30 minutes before deciding to leave. I was given a 50% off my first haircut coupon for my trouble. I left telling myself I wouldn't come back after that experience. Fast forward to yesterday. I have a family reunion thing coming up and I am in serious need of a good haircut. Usually I go to Sports Clips because it is cheap and fast, but with the coupon I had for this place it would be the same price. I cave and make an appointment. Before doing anything my barber asks what exactly we want to do, and makes sure that we have a clear game plan. He tells me exactly what he plans on doing, and shows me the best he can what the length will look like. After a quick rinse (never had this at a barber shop before) I'm in the chair. He did a great job with my hair. He took a lot of time to make sure he did it right. I'm a no fuss or muss guy (I don't see the point in product) and he gave me a haircut that is perfect for me. When I saw his masterpiece afterwards I was blown away. I forgot what a good haircut can look like. Growing up I always went to the barber shop in town. It was no fuss, no muss, and they always remembered you. Once I got older I switched to salons because I liked to be pampered a bit and no barber shop is going to wash your hair and really take the time to give you a styled cut. Then it got too expensive/hard to find a decent haircutting place so I started going to wherever was cheapest. This place though has put my faith back into putting care into my hair. They combine the luxury of a salon with the knowledge of men's hair. No offense to salons, but I feel that you can't really expertly cut both men and women's hair. It is like the sign of a good restaurant; a small menu means they do a few things with expert care, a large menu means that they can do a lot but not with expertise. These guys only do men's hair so they know how to cut it, and cut it well. The only thing that wasn't for me is the decor. I'm not a big sports guy, never have been. I felt a bit like I was stepping into a bro cave when I came in here. Like the level of testosterone was so insanely high that it should be dangerous. I could forgive that for this great haircut. Sure, the name Halftime Cuts may lead you to think that this is the sort of place where an ex-marine tries to give you a "high and tight" while he regales you with old 'nam" stories. But, let me put your minds somewhat at ease. When it comes to getting a great hair cut, these people know what they are doing! Is this place dripping with sports memorabilia and tributes to all things alpha male? Of course. Is this place trying to attract men who otherwise might not go to a typical salon? Absolutely. But, do not think that these things qualify it as anything less than a truly professional and top notch salon. Garo, the owner, takes pride in his work and has a reputation for styling excellence. He will take plenty of personal time with you, gauging your individual needs and giving you input when you are uncertain about what you want. Take confidence that when you walk out, you will feel well taken care of and completely satisfied with your hair cut. And, if you feel possessed to scratch yourself and spit a little, well then, that's ok too. read more

If it's a testament to the quality of work that Garo does, I've been getting my hair cut here since I was 20 years old. I am now 26. It's hard to believe this shop has been open for that long, since I remember the first time I ever found it. I was constantly frustrated with not finding a barber or stylist who would give me a haircut that would make me happy. So I decided to search online and try to find something new. Now this was before Yelp had caught wind of this place, so it was some website that Garo used to have that Google directed me to. It was HalftimeCuts.com, but trust me, it didn't look anything like it does now, lol. I decided "what the hell" and gave a phone call to find out if it's legit. A courteous guy answered the phone and I asked him a bunch of questions about (seriously) getting a good haircut. I asked this for only one reason: To observe his answer. Garo explained that would depend on my hair type, but was confident as ever about finding something for me that worked. Garo had been working in a unisex salon for over 10 years, and just started his own shop that catered to guys. (At this point in time, he just opened one month prior) A shop where guys can relax, watch sports, and get a great haircut. I was sold. I made an appointment, and awaited the day. (BTW, this doesn't mean a woman can't get a cut here. I've seen it happen, absolutely nothing wrong with that. Especially if you're a football or soccer fan!) Appointment date came, and I drove into Pasadena to find the place. The place was an eyesore. It was an awful color of white and green. So I took a deep breath and stepped in. I was greeted by Garo, who had a long sleek ponytail about shoulder length. He talked about what I wanted to do with my hair, what my problems were with the way it grew, etc. He was and is, very caring about what you want. He washed it and went to town on my Chia pet head. He was painstakingly careful about what he was doing, and was meticulous with his scissors. All the while, we chatted about music. At this time, I was a struggling musician trying to break out with a band. The guy is a frikkin' metalhead! Stories of his times seeing Pantera, Metallica, System of a Down, Ozzy, kept me entertained. By the time he was done, I had a great haircut! Needless to say, I looked like a raging sexy beast. 6 years later, I still come to this guy. I've seen it grow from a hole in the wall, to a tightly runned business. I've seen the green and white color scheme go. It's now some reddish color that makes the place modern and stand out from the other shops on the street. I've seen his phone with the wire attached to an ear piece for him to answer phones, go. He now has friendly receptionists answer phone calls, take appointments, and offer water or coffee everytime you come in. I've seen his foosball table go. Sadly, that has not been replaced =( lol. I donated a Talking Stewie (Family Guy) doll that he displays on the upper right shelf, to add in to his decor of sports memorabilia and comic relief. My hair has gone through several style changes and each one is always as good as the other. I've had a spikey top, the just woke up look, some final fantasy looking hair, a pompador....Garo also helped me deal with growing out my hair to shoulder length! Maybe someday I'll do that again. The man is skilled in cutting hair, as is his other fellow barbers who I take up on if Garo is completely booked. The place is clean, stylistic, has coffee, snacks, water, 2 flat screen tvs, and a bunch of awesome guys working in there. There is no reason you shouldn't give this place a try. A haircut is $30, which may seem steep, but considering I know other salons that charge more and give the same amount of service and personal attention, it's a reasonable price. It is a men's theme salon complete with LCD's over the chairs playing sports, tons of guy memorabilia such as Family Guy, Scarface and even an autographed picture of Pete Rose. Garo, the owner is great at what he does. Bottom Line...Give him a shot. I have had many compliments since I started with him years ago. His attention to detail and finding out what works with you is what had me hooked as a loyal customer since he opened. He has added a second chair, a barber, which even gives hot shaves. Yes, I pay $25 for a haircut. Yes, I receive these said haircuts from Halftime Cuts. Yes, they make my hair look ridiculously good. I have been going to Halftime for about a couple years now. Previously, I had been receiving haircuts from neighborhood friends, growing it out because I was too lazy, or going to cheap joints like Supercuts. Just the fact that even before I would sit down, I became extremely fearful about the aftermath at my local Supercuts was too much. I finally decided to shop around for a "guy's" barbershop. Lo and behold, after sifting through some yelp reviews, I found Halftime cuts. It's best to get reservations and most haircuts take about 30 minutes. While parking is only available via street parking in front of the shop, it's not too inconvenient. The place has a laid back atmosphere, with TVs playing sports all day to pictures of athletes of yore. Although the price seems moderately steep compared to the generic, mass-market joints...when you can sit back, talk about sports, and never worry about your hair cut even after the "shower test," it's all worth it. I've been going to halftime for at least 3 years now and have got to say it's not just an ordinary haircut. The owner (Garo) and the rest of the staff there are happy to welcome you and treat you well. If you're into sports, well, let's just say Garo is a avid sport enthusiast. Got a great haircut here this week from Garo, the owner. First things first, he stays open late on Tuesdays, so I could actually go without cutting out early from work. Second, he gave a discount since I found him through Yelp. Third, the haircut process itself was unlike anything I've had before. First, before even getting in the chair, we stood in front of the mirror and talked about my hair and what I wanted to do with it. I had only a vague idea, so it was very reassuring to bounce ideas off of Garo. And then, even while cutting, he showed me what was and wasn't working and was able to adjust mid-stream to make it turn out better. Going to a salon isn't really my kind of thing, so it's great that Garo's got salon-quality skills, but it's a very guy-friendly kind of place. read more

I've been coming here about 2 and a half years now. The reason I decided on it was because I like to have a nice haircut and am willing to pay for it but was tired of going to a salon full of women. I kept passing it on the way to PCC and finally decided to just walk right in. While I think they do accept walk ins, he's often booked for the day, but I've never had too much trouble getting an appointment for later on or the next day. Garo, who owns the place and does probably 99% of the haircuts is great. Knows about hair and sports. He also knows about soccer which is always a plus for me. Showing up early or if he's a little behind is never an issue. Conversations are always a good thing from the comfy leather chairs you can wait in, and enjoy a cup of coffee/water at the same time. So if you're a dude, who's into being a dude, and wants to have a haircut around other dudes, then definitely check out Halftime Cuts. I keep my hair pretty short, which requires a lot of barbershop visits. I've tried out many places in the San Gabriel Valley. I've gone through the whole spectrum of barbershops and salons; from old school barbershops where they use straight razors for the edges to chichi beauty salons where they ask if you'd like some highlights with that. I was always shopping around for barbershops, though, because I was never happy with my cut. Serendipity brought me to Halftime. Once I met Garo, the owner, and I saw his shop, I knew that this place would be the ONE. The shop itself is every man's fantasy of how they'd want their "bat cave" to look like. Foosball table, 3 flat screens with satellite feeds (all broadcasting different sports channels), comfortable sofa chairs, movie and classic sports images decorating the walls, snacks and sodas, sports magazines (even the latest issue of SI's swimsuit edition with no stains!!!), and a fine ass receptionist. Sometimes I wish there was a longer wait, just so I could chill out longer at Halftime. But the best thing about Halftime is the owner and haircutter Garo. This guy's a cool homeboy. He's personable and gives great cuts. He gives great hair advice and his personality is set so that you don't feel like a dumbass asking him for hair advice. This is it folks. I'm writing this on behalf of my boyfriend. I did, however, go with him for his haircut so I was able to see the place for myself If you're a guy, this is definitely the go to place for a haircut. As soon as we walked in and sat down, BF already knew he wouldn't be going anywhere else for a cut. The place isn't huge but it's a nice space. The wash room was through a doorway and there are only three stations. Just a couple of tv's with some sports on it. Even if you're not a huge sports fan, don't shy away from this place cause you think they're all about that. They definitely don't shove it in your face like other sports themed salons I've seen. Even though I was just accompanying my BF, the receptionist offered me something to drink and I was able to sit in a comfy chair and read a magazine while I waited. BF had Jason and from what I heard, they had a great conversation that didn't seem forced. Jason took his time with the cut and the result was great. Garo was there and he seemed to be as nice as everyone has mentioned on here. We went on a Saturday in the afternoon and there was plenty of parking on the street. I did see a parking lot to the west of Halftime that looked like you could park in it if you needed to. All in all, BF had a great experience and a great haircut. The price is extremely affordable and I don't think he will be going anywhere else. read more

I've gone on and off to a few hair stylists over the years, but I always ended up with something not much better then something you can get at a cheaper chain like Super Cuts. Because I never cared much about my hair, I've always settled with the hair chop-shops. No longer. Halftime Cuts is exceptional. The owner, Garo, is completely in his element at the salon. My first visit, before doing anything with my hair, I asked him what kind of cut I should get. He then very clearly talked to me about the kind of hair I have, the shape of my head, even going so far as drawing a diagram of why the haircut I had was ill-suited to me, and suggested a new style. After the haircut, I couldn't have been happier. I've continued to go for a few months now, and each time I've been happy with the result. I hear Lucho is great, but I recommend seeing Garo. The guy can and does carry a conversation about anything, and is exceptional at what he does. If you are male, do yourself a favor and go here for your next shave or haircut. Haven't been to a barber shop for 4+ years. Decided to give it a try. Since there closed Sunday-Monday, I gave them a call Tuesday morning. Ask if they had anything available for the evening ( since I read that this establishment of business works with appointments). Told me that all was book. The person that answered the phone told me that they were going to do confirmation phone calls and if someone cancels, I would be able to take the appointment. Called me back about 1 hour later, was informed that no cancellations were made and that they can schedule me for next week on Thursday. No thanks, I'll pass. It's just a men's hair cut ( my hair grows fast) there's other places what would accommodate me without that much of a long wait. For the first time in my 44 years, a hairdresser (I use Garo, the owner) actually studied my hair and told me what type I have, how to take care of it, what styles work for me, all kinds of things. I wasn't just another paying customer. I will be going back. I went during the week at lunchtime, and they took me right then. Parking was on the street, but found a close spot easy. And most importantly, the haircut was great. Just what I asked for, and with some improvements that he offered. Great small talk. Halftime Cuts is THE place to go for men when it comes to getting a haircut. It is basically a sports bar without the bar and I couldn't see any man or sports fan not loving the experience. Jason is awesome, very easy to talk to, doesn't rush through the cut, and the main reason why I go to this place. However, I had to give it a 4 star because of the business hours. They are only open late once a week and during the week it is hard for me to get there by 6pm. Which is a shame because I am pretty sure they can get even more business if they were open till 8pm every weekday. read more

Halftime is a laid-back men's salon that really does a nice job. It's a cross between a barber shop, a sports bar and a salon. Unlike other men's salons (*cough*18/8*cough*), this one is not so full of itself and is very welcoming. I don't write reviews often, but when I do, they're about either exceptionally good or exceptionally bad service. This one is about the former. I went to Halftime Cuts today motivated by all the great reviews and I wasn't disappointed. My barber, Raul, did an absolutely fantastic job. I have a really difficult hair that's soft, frizzy and unless full of goop, won't hold its shape. For the first time in a long time I found someone who understood how to work with it and what I needed based on my hair type, head shape and my desire for something professional but easy to care for. Raul did an amazing job and upon my return to the office I received many compliments on my new haircut. My wife loved it too. I've been going to various hair salons for years always coming away somewhat disappointed. This time I think I found exactly what I was looking for and I will definitely be back. Made a appointment with Garo- Was greeted by the nice receptionist. She ask me if I wanted some water or coffee.. Alright good start.. Notice Garo was still busy with his client therefore, my appointment was 15 mins late for when it was schedule (respectably take a star away) however, when Garo finish he apologize for the wait.. Which I appreciated. To make long story short he really did a fantastic job! Now I have a tuff decision to either go back to my reg stylist at the factory or back to Garo..
