This is my 2nd time to this barber and I have to admit that this recent experience was underwhelming. Instead of a mid fade he went super high, spent no time blending the corners and absolutely butchered the top of my hair. I asked for nothing off the top except for some shaping and he basically took an inch of off everything and left an extra long poof behind my bangs. On top of that it was an egregious $24! Stay Away!!! This guy does not know how to cut hair. He up-sells the hair wash by stating he can't cut hair that has pomade, and that it's part of the service, WHAT!? To make matters worse he then charges for it in the end with his gratuity included in his price. Example, buzz cut $19, shampoo $5.00 and his total is $27.00...crazy!!! He charged me $20 for a men's haircut. Total haircut time about 15-20 minutes. The haircut itself was decent. Mike definitely knows what he's doing. That's the highlight of my experience here. However, I think $20 is a little pricey for a man's cut. It's definitely not $12 or $14 as other reviewers have quoted. So that means Mike has raised his prices as much as 66% in one year. BTW the sign didn't even say $20, it said $18 and I never got an explanation I fully understood. I also didn't have much chemistry with Mike. We just didn't get along for whatever reason. I've been coming here since he opened in 2012. I would see him consistently every three weeks. He would give a different cut every time but I thought it would be nice to support a guy whose just starting his own business. His cuts continued to be inconsistent but I kept coming back due to convenience because I lived around the corner. My work schedule changed and it became very difficult to see him so I had to just cut my hair with different people. That was annoying because I felt like I had to try the new people at least 4-5 times before they would get it right. Once in a while I would manage to come in due to getting off early. Then, I went for a long 3-4 month stretch where I couldn't come at all, until recently. I was so happy to be getting off early enough to make my appointment, but would soon find out it would turn into a nightmare. He acted very strange and upset, which made the 20 minutes there feel very uncomfortable. He definitely was not his usual pleasant self. He proceeded to give me the worst cut I have ever had in my life!!! I'm sorry, but if he was upset about something it was not very professional to treat someone like that. I waited for about 15 minutes after my appointment time as he just started to cut another customer's hair when I arrived. And the result is also not good. I didn't realize it until I came back home, took a shower and blew my hair. The BEST VALUE in Pasadena. I've tried many salons and barbershops around Pasadena and paid from $20-$70 for a mens haircut. I'm in my mid-fortys and like a semi-conservative cut with a bit of an edge. Mike open his shop in my neighborhood earlier this year and advertised a mens haircut for $10. Yes...that's $10 bucks. I like to support our local business so before vacation I decided to give Mike a try. I figured if the haircut was bad it would grow out while on vacation and I could have it fixed when I returned. Instead of the normal "what number clipper" do you want ie: #3 on the side and #4 on top. Mike asked what kind of "style" do I want. After a brief discussion he went to work. Clippers on the sides and finished with a comb on scissors on top blending my hair into a conservative "faux hawk". Not too edgy but just enough to make this 40-something feel a bit younger :) The best $10 bucks I've spent. My son and I are now regulars. Highly recommend. read more

I can start getting my haircut every other week again!! Once the Supercuts in my neighborhood raised their prices to $17 a cut I knew it was time to start shopping around. I rolled past Mike's one day and decided to pop in. The experience was great. It's the longest haircut I've had in years. My cut is pretty basic but Mike was thorough and you could tell that he cared about giving me a great cut. He explained to me that $10 a cut doesn't really CUT IT (pun totally intended) as far as the bills go but it matters to him to build a loyal client base. If Mike raised his prices I would still go there because he listened to what I wanted and did just that. I had grown accustomed to going to Supercuts; telling them what I wanted, and having the stylist do whatever the hell they wanted which usually resulted in my hair being way too short or too thin or too SOMETHINGIDIDNTASKFOR. lol. On top of all that Mike's a good guy and I will continue to go to him for my cuts. Plus, it's always good to support local businesses,especially when they are deserving. I went to this barber shop and I must say... Worst haircut I've ever had. I read most of the comments on here and people praised him for taking time on your hair and I must say, he spends most of the time cleaning his equipment than actually doing a good cut. I overpaid for a simple buzz cut and I have a lot of areas that were missed. He did take his time but in all honesty it's overpriced and if he can't do something as simple as a buzz cut I feel bad for the people that want something more complicated. He's an old man that doesn't want people in his shop waiting so don't bother trying to be a walk-in. It is really hard to find a barber who is good, fast, and cheap, but Mike is all three. If you know what you're looking for (1 on the sides, high fade, half inch off the top), it takes 20 minutes at most, which is great if you've got a packed day. I'm usually out of there in 15 minutes. $20 (including tip) isn't bad for a haircut. It's not the absolute lowest priced place, but I'm okay paying a few bucks extra for clean edges and even sides. I'm glad I looked at yelp and trusted the reviews because this place lived up to expectations. My 40ish receding hairline doesn't require salon manscaping but it's easy to mangle with uneven "supercuts" from folks just out of cosmetology school that start pinging out after the first week. Mike's been cutting hair since 1994 and finally decided to open his own shop in the summer of 2013. He took the time to ask questions and during the cut, he made sure he was getting all the angles and edges around my bulbous noggin, using four different clippers and two different scissors. The resulting haircut was exactly what I asked him to do. Mike's not much for words but is a friendly conversationalist if you really want to gab. I highly recommend Mike's Barber Shop to men looking for a no-nonsense, affordable, accurate hair cut. My current favorite barber, Mike takes the time and effort to give you a good cut and listens to what you want. A lot of my previous barbers are very inconsistent with their fades and tapers, or attempt to try new styles because they "think" it looks good on you, but Mike stays consistent no matter what. I always try to stop by Pasadena when I need a lineup even though it's out of the way for me, and it's worth the trip every time. The place is cash only $20 + tip. As working parents, personal maintenance is a luxury. When he made an appointment for Saturday afternoon he expected his barber to be there but after a half hour of waiting the barber never showed up. This has actually l happened twice and there was also another person waiting there for double booked appointment for 1pm. This place is absolutely terrible I have scheduled appointments on weekends multiple times and twice he is not even shown up to the shop. Also both times there were other people waiting outside for his place to open who had earlier appointments than me, so he obviously booked appointments then didn't even show up to honor them. On previous haircuts I've gotten they've been okay but he also charges $26 which is a little absurd for a very basic barber shop. Decided to give Mike a try on a simple routine head shave (4 on the top and low zero taper fade) and Mike spoke with confidence that he'd execute an awesome fade. As a new customer i began asking questions about how long his shop's been here, how long he's been in the business, etc etc. He got offended and asked me "is this an interview"? Didn't realize he didn't like me asking questions so i stayed quiet for the rest of my cut. After he showed me the mirror, i quickly told him "this is not a fade" -- every customer's worst nightmare situation and the words we should never have to tell a hair professional. Mike was flustered, tried to fix it and then i saw him making it worse so we stopped. The good thing about this encounter is that he told me to leave freely without paying if i wasn't satisfied. I admire his business ethic and applaud him for that. I'm sure he's a great hair stylist but i'm probably never going back again for a fade. 2 stars for good business ethic. read more

I had been looking for a replacement barber right about that time since mine was moving back east. Mike is a professional, experienced and proficient hair barber who is respectful of his client's space (especially when it comes to chat). His work caters to your needs and style desire(s). He is very easy to talk to and VERY dedicated to making sure you are happy with your cut! I got lucky again when I decided to become a new regular and besides, I felt his price$ were more than reasonable for that kind of good work. As a side note: His shop is clean, simple and complete with WiFi. Went in for a simple head shave and I got in and out of there rather quickly. A bit too quickly it turns out. When I got home and rinsed my head off I saw a lot that was missed.
