Half Shell became one of our favorite spots in Key West after our last trip. We stumbled across their happy hour pricing and we loved it. It was just a bonus to their already mouthwatering seafood. We came twice in a weekend. I came here for the oysters and they did not disappoint. So fresh. We also really like their popcorn shrimp. We tried some of their sides - cuban bread, corn on the cob, and yellow rice. All GREAT. We also had my son with me and he ordered off the kids meal. He loved the fact that it came in a frisbee! My family and I came here on Thanksgiving. The restaurant was reasonably busy, but we were greeted and seated quickly. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. There were lots of happy hour specials on drinks and food. We ordered conch fritters, which were honestly the best we had on this trip. We also had the buffalo shrimp appetizer, but got the sauce on the side. The shrimp was breaded in cornmeal and was well seasoned and delicious. With or without the sauce, it was very good. They use the same breading in their po boys, which were very good as well. We enjoyed the fries and the sauces that came with our meals. We ordered Key Like pie, which is made in house. Well another once great Key West spot bites the dust. Been coming here for 20+ years, sold off to a corporation. We stopped in for dinner and they have installed VERY BRIGHT lights along the seating by the docks. ( Think 7-11 bright at 1AM in the morning) The atmosphere now gone, from old town, cozy comfy, old key west to corporate, we don't really give a damn attitude. Like any corporation they strip the heart , soul and warmth out of everything they touch. About five years ago the were sold and first thing to go was the charming roll of paper towels on the table instead of dozens of tiny paper napkins they give you now. They used to have this awesome onion rings ( ok, also gone) the food comes out in less than 10 minutes no matter what you order ( its all just sitting waiting to be ordered, Think McDonalds) We know things change and thats the nature of the these places, BUT, we sent them a message about how they are destroying the vibe, not caring etc. and the RESPONSE was the photo you see below. They wrote back the following to a customer of 20+ years. They said . and i Quote - "Your an idiot. Paper towels out save the environment and those lights have been there for 40 years... " end quote Probably written by some 20 year old suit in Illinois who has never been to Key West. We will be telling EVERYONE we know and folks we don't . For a long time, this was one of our favorite happy hours, then it was sold and everything changed; happy hour was boring and lacked seafood (they ditched tuna and other ocean food for quesadillas. And the regular dinners were just so-so. So, we stopped coming and after about 10 years we finally returned. We figured if they are still in business then maybe they've fixed things. Turns out the happy hour is back to basics (oysters, clams, calamari, shrimp... SEAFOOD); not much of a bargain though. We had a great time at this restaurant... It really does represent the essence of Key West. They have a huge indoor and outdoor seating area. They have a full bar with any kind of cocktail that you want. They also serve beer and wine. They had a really large menu with all the seafood options you could imagine. We had the chicken wings, which were good. We also had the coconut shrimp, which was really good. I also really enjoyed the mussels that were steamed in garlic butter sauce. This is our go to place when in Key West. We always go there for Happy Hour for oysters and beer steamed shrimp. The oysters are so fresh and the shrimp is cooked perfectly. We also had the conch fritters and those are very good as well. Michelle was the bartender and she was always there when we needed something. I have been coming to Key West for nearly 50 years and have always made sure I stop by Half Shell multiple times during our visits. It's not a fancy place by any stretch of the imagination but the food is fantastic. If you are a fan of ceviche (Conch Salad) this is probably one of the best spots to enjoy a fresh & tasty culinary experience. Again, nothing fancy but all food is good. Normally, do an appetizer type dinner with ceviche, Key West Pink Shrimp, fish dip & calamari. Of course along with some adult beverages. They have a happy hour from 4:30PM to 6:30PM. Where the prices for the shrimp, fish dip & calamari are reduced almost in half. The servers have always been friendly and get you your order quickly. Again, the ambience is more hole in the wall with license plates from around the world (mostly US) being part of the decor along with nautical type items. Check it out! Great atmosphere always- so nice to look out on the water. Service is not consistent. Sometimes great , sometimes not. Today was ok. Took awhile for her to get to our table but once she did- was she ok. Oyster poboy was good. Too much cheese for me- but I'm sure others would like that. Cole Slaw was cold and had a good flavor with not too much mayo. My daughter had fish and chips-Mahi. Was very good. Light bread coating not beer batter and thats the way she likes it. Service was quick, our waitress was very kind. She took our orders, we put in for oysters (can't go wrong with oysters), conch ceviche (bland and not good), salad (lettuce was brown and warm- and the ranch was also warm.. not ideal; especially on a hot night), calamari (over breaded, very basic) and the beer steamed shrimp with old bay (not much old bay, in a bowl full of water). We thought about putting more food in to try a little bit of everything, but were told last call for food. The place was supposed to close at 10 so we felt rushed (which understandable everyone wants to go home after a long hot day, I've been there). Although everything was not perfect... We really enjoyed our meal here. When we returned from our snorkeling excursion, we decided to eat at one of the restaurants near the dock. We were originally going to go to the Boathouse Bar and Grill... But after checkimg the menus at both places... we decided to have dinner at the Half Shell. The prices were much more reasonable. We were seated outside with a view of the water. The service was great. The food - all but the rice - was delicious! Loved the oysters. The steaks were executed a perfect medium rare. The pasta and shrimp scampi was rich and satisfying. The rice was unfortunately inedible, hard as a rock. Perhaps the rice was sitting too long under a warmer. We did not have a good experience at this place and would never go back. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu but after serving our drinks we didn't see her until we were ready to leave, and had to flag her down to pay our bill. We order two drinks and waters, but didn't get our waters so had to ask a person who was cleaning off tables for ice water, which we didn't get until we were almost finished with our food. We were there during happy hour and ordered baked oysters three ways and 1/2 pound of steamed pink shrimp. Our dishes were served promptly but we were not given plates to eat on. The oysters were unappealing and we had a hard time eating them because they tasted terrible. The shrimp was slightly overcooked and were not deveined so had to attempt to clean the vein out before eating, which was not pleasant. All in all a bad experience but because it was happy hour our bill only came to $44, which wasn't terrible for such bad food. The Oyster Po Boy was not good. I passed by the tell tale signs - fish covered in cheese. The fries were soft. The drinks are small. The fritters are all bread and the seasoning is bla, zero conch. The grilled Mahi Mahi was so so. The seafood boil was good, not great. The chicken tenders were good. The Bread Pudding was outstanding. It was all grossly overpriced. The staff was excellent. This is a perfect spot to stop by after ur trip to dry tortugas national park. We got in just in time before their happy hour ended at 6.30 pm. We tried the oysters on half shell, raw clams and Buffalo shrimp. All the choices were amazing and our server was attentive with a big crowd.
