This shop is far from "Basic", there's a reason it's been around for 23+ years! There are lots of hair salons on the area, but I doubt you'll find a better cut for the price (less than 20$)! I've made 2-3 trips a year to Hair Basix since moving onto Redondo Ave 6 years ago, and I've always left happy with healthy looking hair! Celina, the owner of the salon, did my hair for my wedding in June and my wife and I were very pleased. As a man with shoulder length, slightly curly hair, I love having a place I can depend on for my seasonal cuts. TIPS: They take appointments, but I tend to walk-in during off times, like mid-day during the week. Cash only, so bring enough for a tip- you'll want to show your gratitude! There is an ATM at the 7-11 next door, and you can get cash back from Food For Less across the street. Diana is also great and comparable to Celina. Parking in the lot can be tight at times, but there is street parking nearby. They have two chairs/stations for rent! read more

Mistake #1 - doing my own ombre with no previous hair knowledge. I hate you YOUTUBE for giving me a false sense of confidence. Mistake #2 - impulsively getting my hair cut at a 'high end' salon while in Vietnam. Most horrendous cut, EVER. Mistake #3 - thinking the only place I can get a great haircut and style is at a bougie salon that serves free wine (If you're in HB, go to Studio Fifty Fifty. I love it there but hate the drive and price but love the wine). I tried to walk in for a cut at Seven Hair Salon but they were completely booked for the whole day. I resorted to using Yelp Monocle to find a location nearby as I hate to drive. I had several really good options but for some reason I gravitated towards Hair Basix. They didn't have many reviews but the few reviews that they did have were really promising. So, this is going to sound weird but the only thing that turned me off about this place was the pricing. There is no way that this place provides quality cuts for $15, NO WAY. I went against my instinct and went anyway. Diana was my stylist and she was amazing! Although her curling techniques are a little antiquated (I left looking like the Asian Farah Fawcett) and the cut I recieved looked nothing like the photo I provided (attributed to the curls), I still loved the end result. My hair is so soft and feathery. Diana was also able to get rid of all the dry ends without compromising the length. I am so so happy with this place. My first time was when we first moved to Long Beach 6 years ago. Finding a new hair stylist is never a fun job. You have to take calculated risks and hope for the best. I feel lucky to have found this salon very close to home and work. Selena is the owner and also a stylist. She is very up to date with new trends. I'm usually not that picky with haircuts, even if you cut off 50% of my hair. As long as it looks good or decent, I'm a happy camper. So, I'm giving my 1-star rating for one hell of a reason then. All I asked for was, "Little trim, just want to make my hair look neat since it's a mess right now" Diane/Diana/Or someone immediately nodded as soon as I said my hair looks messy, and from that point I figured, "ALL RIGHT. SHE UNDERSTANDS!" I'm not even going to bag on this establishment for the lack of communication due to the language barrier, since I more than understand that. However, lack of English should not inhibit one's skill/talent that requires no talking whatsoever. At one point the haircut was going awesome, but I realized it's because nothing really changed. She just did exactly as I told in terms of making it much neater, but before I could say stop and get up, she went ahead with some huge razor comb and had a field day with my hair. I am now left with the most uneven, choppy, messy, awkward hair. I have a shit ton of layers that defeated the purpose of neat-looking hair. My bangs? Hah. I can't believe I cut my bangs better with blunt Ikea scissors, and that's saying a lot. Price is cheap, $15. I gave her a $20 and she just took it without asking me if I wanted change. Great. I'm a college student constantly ballin' on a budget, and this place is going to cost me more since I'm going to try my best salvaging it at a "nicer" salon. Save yourself a trip out here, and just go somewhere else. Please. If you want me to snapchat you my pathetic looking hair, I'd be more than happy to. read more

First off: I am very picky and impatient when it comes to sitting in a chair for over 30 minutes to get hair or nails done, however, visiting Selina at Hair Basix is... SO WORTH IT!! She is fast, very skilled, and never ceases to impress me when I walk out of her salon feeling amazing. Although I'm dark-haired now, I've entrusted her with making me blond, highlights, upddos for weddings, etc. I'm most in-love with her blending techniques and her haircuts. I went in because of all the rave reviews on Yelp about how well they handle Asian hair. It's right across the street from the Ralph's market square and it's only two block away from my apartment. It looks modest, but it sure is a hidden treasure. You can drop in anytime because the salon is usually empty. I went into the salon to get my hair layered. Because I have thick Asian hair, all the previous, fancy $50 haircut salon I've been to never did it quite right and always lacked enough layers. But the nice Cambodian lady that works here, Salina, is fabulous. I'd even say she gave me the best haircut I've ever had in my life! All the previous hairdresser never really knew my pains of having thick hair, and they're always afraid of layering too much of my hair. Salina, however, knew exactly what to do. Once I told her I want long layers, she understood what to do and immediately got to work. She knew the right amount of layers to give me (thank GOD!) and even gave me some awesome bangs. In the end I was only charged $15. $15 for the best haircut ever?!!! What a bargain! I gave her a $10 because I was so satisfied. I'll probably visit her again before I leave SoCal for summer. I have been going to Hair Basix since I was in my late teens and now I'm in my early 30's. It's hard to find a hair stylist you want to stick to but Celina is my #1 hair stylist. I have colored my hair many times but I stuck with the highlights because she does an amazing job with both the color and highlights and I'm always leaving happy. Each visit gets better and better. I love the way she cuts my hair since I have long hair she knows what type of cut looks best on me either long layers or lots of layers and I can keep my hair length. She uses very good products not the cheap ones that other salons uses and the price is right. You cannot get a better deal then here. Diana is also very good at cutting hair especially for men and children. My son always likes her hair cut. She takes here time and make sure she gets the edges down. Many times, every where I go I get stopped by people asking me how beautiful my hair is and where I go. I totally recommend this to all my friends, families and strangers. Remember to call for an appointment even though you can walk in but at least you know you have a time slot and are also accommodating. These lovely ladies are great at what they do. I came in for a hair cut several months back and loved it. Perfect layers and my bangs finally didn't look as if I was five and found scissors while no one was looking. Last week I went in for a perm and only had to show them a picture of the type of curl I wanted and we went from there. I never knew perms took 2 hours to do but holy crap I loved the result! Didn't like leaving the salon with my hair still wet but apparently with perms you have to let them air dry afterwards. The only thing I didn't like was that there was this man hanging around, husband of one of the ladies maybe? But also there were three or four ladies, stylists or friends of I'm not sure but they were all hanging out, eating and chit chatting. That's fine and all, but that plus the man hanging around looking as if he'd just walked off a construction site was a little awkward for the customer while they sat there for 20ish mins waiting for their perm to set. Also communication about time was lacking too, she'd just walk away from me and not tell me anything. Super hole in the wall, it felt like I was getting my cut done by a cousin in my aunt's old garage. Don't let that deter you from coming here though, especially if you have asian hair. I have long, really flat, thinning, stick straight asian hair and Celina gave me some volumizing layers without sacrificing the length. Really basic, and since I'm not one to splurge on this type of stuff, it's an excellent spot for what you pay! Now that my body waves perm is grown out I'm considering this place for some dimensional color, stay tuned! Update: So I got some coloring done by Diana. Fell into this salon by default. After having my straight hair razored at Salon Pop after telling the cute stylist not to do that or layer my straight hair.. I walked out with razored hair, cut in a bizarre fashion that caused the ends of my hair to look damaged. Hair Basix has been my salon for over a year now. The girls who work there are great, and yes, they are Asian as posted below, but very modern and very good with scissors or razor. A full cut is only $15. Full highlights $35. I called...they ANSWERED! (unlike other salons!) Lucky me they had an opening and I went the same day. My appointment was with Diana. I took in a picture, and she looked it over and we went from there. She was also very nice about taking pictures of my before and after. The salon its self is very modest, but comfortable. The plaza that it's in is very small so parking can be a challenge. You may have to park on the street. Now for the hair cut...Over all I'm super happy about how my hair turned out. I needed a quick close place for a badly needed hair cut. The reviews looked great and the prices more than reasonable. Tara(? I'm so sorry if wrong!) did an awesome job. She listened to all my requests and the cut looked great! She washed my hair ( way better than other high end places which do a sloppy quick wash) and cut quickly and only with scissors ( I hate places which use the razor). I also mentioned I only wanted 3 inches cut and she did not over cut my hair. This is definitely going to be my new salon. They really know how to cut Asian hair. If you are looking for blaring music and a stylist trying to make small talk the entire time she does your hair, this is not the place for you. I actually love not talking to my stylists because I can just close my eyes and relax. My stylist Diana seemed perfectly content not to make small talk. She took a lot of care with the way she handled my hair and listened to what I wanted. The reason this place doesn't get five stars is that right before I got out of my chair a guy came in and was seated in the chair next to me. There was a razor with hair all over it from the previous client sitting on the vanity in front of me and the lady doing his hair just grabbed it and started using it on his head without cleaning it. First time, last time. Molina cut my hair and the results, choppy and didnt even manage to get rid of split ends even though she cut three inches off. Thumbs down. Update, while i appreciate a free cut from the owner, Salina, I would not take them up on the offer. If a cut was bad, i wouldn't trust any highlights or any more haircuts. I also understand that it depends on each stylist, the owner should make sure that all of their stylist are decent before allowing them to cut hair on customers. I just got my haircut my Celina and I can't say a single bad thing! She gave me the best head massage while doing a deep shampooing. She then recommended bangs and I was a little apprehensive because of past experiences but I have been teetering the idea of it again lately and my instinct told me to trust her.
