We had the hibachi experience at Haiku this evening and all in all, the experience was good. Although it was Tuesday night, there was a crowd in this somewhat small strip mall location and I got the feeling that the staff was a little overwhelmed. We got started a little later than our reservation time, having to wait for the staff to prepare. Our hibachi chef Harry, however, was skillful and personable, the high point of our evening. We followed with a variety of sushi rolls and although price points were a little high, all were good and attractively presented. Although I have had better Japanese hibachi and sushi, I am surprised in some of the very low scores Haiku has received. Our party of six enjoyed itself and the crowded dining room would suggest that something good is going on here. We will return and try again. read more

If you want all Your food to taste the same, then try this place. The hibachi grill was kinda funny with the entertainment but, when the food was made it tasted the same the rice, noddles chicken all tasted the same. To much soy sauce. Which made it all taste salty. The rice had crunchy pieces in it like maybe the it wasn't so fresh. Would I eat here again? Terrible lunch on a Thursday. We ordered the lunch chicken entree (hibachi) from our table instead of the kitchen chicken entree. Well my fiancé got the kitchen entree anyway. It was cold. The fried rice was white rice with soy sauce on it; no egg, no onion, nothing. Our waitress spent more time seated and looking at her phone instead of taking our order, refreshing drinks or checking the satisfaction of our meal. I cannot imagine this place getting a poor review other than for the waiters service (not sushi bar...the sushi chefs are amazing). This is by far, hands down the best sushi place in the city. We dont eat the Hibachi so I cannot comment. They always have unusual things to choose from on the specials board. We love monkfish liver it is great here. The portions are sizable, fresh, and not overwhelmed with sugary sauces or useless crunchies. I have eaten sushi all over the world, NYC, California and Japan. You cant fool me. Small but perfect size Japanese restaurant. Very nice atmosphere. The decor was attractive and modern. Our service was super prompt. There was constantly people walking around taking plates, asking us if we were okay, etc. To some this may be somewhat of a annoyance but we were not bothered. The sushi tasted good, but their portions are pretty small for the price they charge. I'll let you know if you're used to getting the Volcano roll at places like Yujin, this is nothing like that. The star is for the sushi, but that's really all I can say that's positive. There was a wait, service was incompetent and generally absent, and the entire place smells strongly of Windex because that's what they are using to clean the tables. (Which doesn't even make sense, it's definitely not food safe, and it's just weird to be eating food while your nose is filled with the distinctive aroma of a squeaky-clean window) Our waitress took our order, disappeared, and never brought our edamame appetizer. We had to ask a total of 3 different people about it, then when our entrees came (after at least 25 minutes), we decided to cancel it, which caused a ridiculous amount of confusion. Our actual waitress was MIA for this entire thing, and didn't resurface until the end of the meal. Like I said, the sushi was actually good. However, my sister is pregnant and can't eat anything raw, so she played it safe and ordered teriyaki chicken. It's also a hibachi place, so how could they screw that up? I think you know the answer. It tasted like straight up dirty dishwater. We had already waited SO long and our waitress was nowhere to be seen, so she ate what she could even though it was not appetizing. We had to go to TCBY after to get the taste out of our mouths. There are plenty of sushi options in Mandeville/Covington. Haiku is going to have to do better than this to compete. Love this place usually but tonight was not good. I'm not sure if the Hibachi guy was new or in a hurry. He had grease and food at the corner near me and grease popped me in the eye. He literally and sloppily gave us our food on our plates. It was dropping everywhere. The rice was way undercooked and the noodles were overcooked. The service was super slow from the wait staff and they were stressed and rude. I'm not sure what was going on. It looked like they were not understaffed. The check was over $100 for 3 dinners and it wasn't good. Super disappointed in my fav Hibachi place. I'm giving three stars bc they have been so great in the past. My family and I were here last night 1/22/2023. If I could leave 0 stars I would... We sat down, got drinks and soup. Ordered our food and a sushi roll.. Our chef came and started cooking. We got our sushi roll and right as my sister was going to take a bite. She noticed a bug crawling on the counter in front of us... My brother got up, killed it and realized it was a cockroach. Then we all noticed there was a crack in the marble where the grill was (where are food was currently being prepared). We looked in the crack to find that there was at LEAST a dozen baby cockroaches and they were now crawling out onto the counter. My brother notified our server, she spoke with the manager and their solution was to roll up a napkin and shove it in the crack... We got up and left. I've been a huge sushi fan for 30 years. I can testify that Haiku is grocery store grade, hyper Americanized sushi. The fish is a few days old, and the texture of their rice is not optimal. Sadly I splurged and got the steak hibachi because this place was recommended to me by a friend (who has obviously never had good Japanese hibachi to know that this place sucks.) The decor is nice and everyone we encountered was friendly. I ordered salmon roe nigiri and they actually had it in stock (which I've had trouble with when ordering in Covington). The nigiri was brought immediately so the seaweed was still crispy when I received it. Major points for that! The rolls were good sized as well. Why four stars? They were super skimpy with the unagi/eel. We ordered a Caterpillar Roll.. and all over the top was avocado with no eel to be seen; I found a tiny sliver inside the crabmeat. As soon as the lady sat us down I asked her if it was okay to just move one seat away from the other family that was already there so we wont be so closed too each other , she literally threw two chairs too the side roughly and gave us an attitude . I was ordering lunch here biweekly. I thought it was ok. Same old hibachi, but the sushi was always warm. Called two weeks ago and they said no more TO GO lunches. So, that was fine. I ordered from Kim's. They are SO MUCH better!!!! The meat there is 10x better and the sushi is actually cold. I was actually going to bite the bullet and try again today and order from Haiku because I was in a rush. I asked about the lunch TO GO. They hung up on me. No order...nothing. They have a huge sushi menu here. No pictures though, so be prepared to read and to have a hard time making a decision! I've been here a couple of times now when I traveled down to Covington for business. They're pretty quiet on the weeknights, but they look like they're a good place for families and large parties, as most hibachi grills are. I went for the sushi. I had the Phoenix roll, which was really pretty spicy with the raw jalapeño on it. I really enjoyed the Dweeb roll, and the Happy roll is great if you like eel and crawfish. I went with that one since I normally don't see crawfish in the rolls back home. I'm a big fan of the raw sushi rolls and non-battered rolls, and they definitely had several choices available for me. The interior looks trendy, and they have a couple of TVs on the wall so you can catch a game if there's one on. For some reason I had terrible cell phone service in there, so I couldn't really do the normal business traveler thing where I keep to myself and read my phone while I eat dinner. They had a free, password protected WiFi broadcasting, but I didn't bother to ask for a password to connect. They had a full bar, but it didn't look like they had a huge selection of liquor on the shelf. They, of course, had sake and appeared to have a decent wine selection for a sushi place (i.e. more than just plum wine). They're also open a little later (10pm) than many of the other places (9pm) in the area. Overall, I liked this place and would go again. read more
