We visited Megumi in Mandeville last night for sushi. The food itself was very good. We ordered the Amigo Roll, Angel Smile Roll, and Princess Poki Roll -- all were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully plated. The presentation was impressive, and you can tell care goes into the kitchen side of things. The ambiance is also nice and makes for a good date-night or casual dinner spot. Unfortunately, the service really fell short. We ordered edamame and waited over 15 minutes, only to find out it had been sent to another table. One of the servers mentioned that if they mess up, they have to pay for the dish themselves -- which honestly felt awkward and unnecessary to share with customers. Our sushi also took over 15 minutes to come out. Throughout the meal, our server seemed disengaged and largely ignored our table. When I asked for additional chopsticks, she looked at me and walked away to assist other tables. I eventually had to get up and ask if she heard me, and she replied yes. The interaction felt cold and impersonal, like she was just going through the motions rather than providing attentive service. Overall: great food, nice atmosphere, but very disappointing service on this visit. Hoping this was just an off night because the sushi itself was excellent. read more

Located off of Hwy 22 in a small shopping center is this amazing Japanese Sushi & Noodle spot. It's been awarded Best of the Northshore several time for the quality food they not only looks appealing but has amazing flavors. It's a fairly small seating with amazing service. The waiter came by often to refill our drinks several times without having to ask for it. The Maître d at the front end was so nice and offered to seat us and even recommended the dish of the day. Although, the food was what some would consider to be pricey for lunch, it was definitely worth every dime of its cost. If you're ever driving through Mandeville heading to New Orleans, STOP HERE for lunch! I promise you if you're a fan of a Asian food or don't even like sushi stop in to try a plethora of cuisines there. The sushi was just okay. I've had better at a few places in the area. The menu is like a binder of probably 300 sushi rolls and then when you go to order that say that you can only order what is on the ordering sheet (which doesnt have descriptions). After we were told that, we had to find different rolls to order and most of them weren't on the ordering sheet. We got hot sake and the cups and carafe were not fully clean. The place itself is situated in a strip mall type parking lot, but once you entered the door the bustling restaurant is cozy. As far as the food, I ordered the King Roll and it was absolutely the tastiest sushi I have had in a very long while. I lived in Japan for three years so have a grasp of what good sushi is. This review is a bad one solely bc of how rude the old woman at the front desk is. I order out from there a good bit and every single time i go in she has a ridiculous attitude specifically centered around me asking for extra soy sauce. I order thru uber eats and every time i request extra sauce, however, when i go in i make sure to ask her for more bc she likes to gate keep it for some odd reason. Today i come in and like always i ask her for extra soy sauce. She asks me how many i want in the rudest tone, throws them in the bag, wraps it up aggressively and tosses the to go bag over to me. I say "thank you" and she says "BYE!" and walks away. My daughter and I drove from New Orleans to eat lunch here this afternoon. We were interested in trying the ramen after reading several reviews and being on sort of a quest to find good ramen in and around New Orleans. We both ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen. In addition we had Tempura Chicken appetizer and my daughter ordered a crunchy roll. The servers were very attentive and definitely earned their tips. Food was delivered hot and fast. Everything was excellent. The Tempura Chicken was light and crispy. My daughter enjoyed adding it to the ramen in small bits. I usually find crunch rolls boring, but it had a good flavor and was lively. The Tonkotsu Ramen was quite good. I'd give it an 8 out of 10. The single pork slice was quite thick and difficult to manage with chopsticks. I would have preferred the traditional three slices instead of one large slice. Otherwise the ingredients were all well done and nicely placed. The broth was rich and full of flavor. The restaurant was clean, bright, and welcoming. The bathrooms were clean. One caution is that the hot water gets super hot super fast, so watch out for that. We both had a good time, and agreed that we would eat here again. Next time we will try more sushi. read more

It's been a few years since I had eaten Megumi and decided to give it a try once again as I know the place has lots of regulars. To say the least I was disappointed. To say the most I was grossed out. The beauty of the plates seems to be the extent of their quality. I'm very sure that their red snapper fish is not even red snapper it tastes and feels much more like tilapia. Mt husbands lobster was like rubber on rice and came out just as bad the second time. No other sushi/Asian food establishment I've been so doesn't put THAT much rice in their sushi. Over priced, not enough protein, microwaved and heat lamp treated fish, obviously not fresh anything. Not only that but the service in Mandeville has continued to be sketchy for years now. I have fought with servers in their Covington location and I've heard the bitter old woman in Mandeville, who I assume is a manager, talk crap about customers. The Covington location is fine with ambiance but like I've said their Mandeville location leaves something to be desired with chipped paint and mind numbing yellow every where. Fried Calamari was way harder than any squid should be. My seaweed salad has never been slimier. Please stop letting over priced pretty sushi scam you and eat somewhere else. read more

Megumi is not my regular sushi place, but I was in the mood for something new. What I found was some of the best sushi I have ever had, but the service was very poor. The menu is very large. There were at least five double sided legal sized pages of rolls. If I remember correctly the rolls were listed in alphabetical order and there were no separate listings for regular vs. specialty rolls. This was a lot to take in, and picking what we wanted took some time. Our server checked with us once before we were ready, then disappeared. When she finally returned we placed our order. The way the food was delivered was very disorganized. Even though we ordered an appetizer, it came out after all of our rolls. Drink refills were few and far between, and it was difficult to get our servers attention throughout the meal. At the end of the meal getting the check, and getting the server to run my card took at least 15 minutes. It left me highly frustrated. The saving grace was the food. The sushi rolls were among the best I ever had. My dining companion and I ordered: Blue Water Roll- jumbo lump crab meat and avocado. Topped with tuna, black caviar, eel sauce, white sauce and sesame seeds. $13.95 Playboy Roll - coconut shrimp, snow crab, and avocado. Topped with fresh salmon, tuna, eel sauce and sesame seeds. $11.95 Crunchy Roll - snow crab, asparagus and punchy tempura. $5.95 These rolls were amazing. I highly recommend the Playboy roll. In hindsight I wish I had ordered two of these because it was that good. The rolls here are larger than traditional sushi rolls. I would estimate that they were at least one foot long, and had approximately 12 individual pieces per roll. I will probably return to Megumi because the food was so good. I just hope they improve their level of service. read more

Had date night last night, of course I got the Alex Roll and my husband got the super crab roll I believe. It was the freshest and best sushi I have had to date from anywhere! Came here for a happy hour birthday dinner with some co-workers and I was amazed by how big the sushi rolls were as well as how delicious they were. Yes, this place is expensive BUT wouldn't you rather pay a little more for good sushi that is fresh and avoid the stomach flu? I find their menu a little overwhelming and just go to the rolls I remember eating and try a few things. I'm usually not a snow crab fan but theirs is delicious. My favorite are the Volcano and the Fire and Ice. I should add that since, I've done take out twice and also tried their ceviche. It was delicious! read more

Ordered the spicy ramen with seafood, it had a large scallop, pork and one mussel, it wasn't very spicy but the broth was very flavorful, the noodles and pork were cooked perfectly. The Tonkatsu ramen was very good too with a milder flavor. The fire and ice roll was huge, and it was a good combination of flavors half was topped with wasabi roe and the other with habanero roe, both were very good. The spicy ramen also came with a fried soft shell crab, it was a little soggy. We also ordered the shrimp yakisoba noodles, the sauce used tasted strange like nutmeg or cinnamon, just a strange combination wasn't expecting it. Service was good except it took a while for a waitress to bring the bill because she did get quite busy but there's always someone else checking in on us. Went to Megumi for my birthday dinner in November and it was excellent! I didn't know how my dad would fair, because he's a vegetarian. Thankfully, he found something that he liked - the tofu steak. He ended up liking it so much that he ordered two servings. I went with the steak and sushi. I'm not really a big seafood person, but I jumped outside of my comfort zone and was really pleased with it. I never had sake before, so I went for it. I'll be back for more. I ordered the same thing I usually get, Stuffed Squid which comes in a boat, with rice, sauce, beautiful presentation....today, my birthday, I took my wife here and they bought out what seemed to be a qtr of the food with no boat, no sauces, in a plate....My wife ordered a chicken dish that came out very bland. It was 5-6 prices of browned chicken with no flavor. They didn't bring rice and it was in a side place...not enough for a 10 year old. I am heartbroken over this as I loved what they were, but 65.00 and I left hungry and very disappointed. I've been a ramen lover since my visit to Japan years ago and it's unfortunate how rare it is here in Louisiana. Megumi has a great selection including a tofu ramen for those vegetarians out there. I'm a huge fan of their Tonkatsu AND Shoyu ramens and it's always a struggle to know which to order. So yum! All the yum! I was craving sushi something intense when we came here to get a bite to eat. For starters, the menu is MASSIVE. The menu is so massive that it's a bit overwhelming, but it seems like there is a little something for everyone here. Seriously, if you can't find something you like, you just don't like sushi. We decided to start with the ocean salad- an assortment if different cuts of sashimi topped with a bit of sprouts. This was delicious! The fish was extremely fresh and was a fantastic start to the meal. We decided to get two rolls- the H2O roll and the seafood tempura roll. The seafood tempura roll was raw fish and cream cheese wrapped in rice and fried tempura style. I'm usually not a fan of fried rolls, but this is was extremely tasty and not heavy at all. My favorite of the meal was the H2O roll, which was just raw fish wrapped into a roll with no rice. This was excellent because there was no rice to weigh the roll down, so I was left with a tasty light treat that was full of flavor. The fish was fresh and everything we got was excellent. The service here was impeccable. No sooner had we ordered that we had our food in front of us with barely any wait. The presentation of the sushi is gorgeous! Most places just put it on the plate, but Megumi seems to really want to make the experience memorable and the little touches of the flowers and the tiny umbrella make you feel as if you are dining on an island somewhere. EDIT: My husband and I purchased the Groupon for Megumi on Friday, 11/12. Per the rules of Groupon, we could not use it until the next day. When we went in, the hostess informed us that they were not accepting the Groupons until Monday. Nowhere in the fine print does it state this. So if you buy the Groupon for this place, don't bring it by until Monday (and I would be surprised if they accept it then too). At first glance, this place looks very unassuming. It's in a strip mall, and it looks kind of small from the outside. Don't be fooled though, inside is the best sushi you'll ever have. Their sushi menu is enormous, and if you like specialty rolls, you'll find many of them along the standards of California and cucumber rolls! The slices of sashimi are thick and super-fresh. They also have an extensive menu of cooked food, including a great yakimono grill menu (meats and veggies marinated and grilled on skewers). Don't be afraid to bring non-raw fish eaters here. On top of being delicious, their presentation is GORGEOUS. Most sushi restaurants are fairly basic, but these people put some serious effort into not only making everything delicious, but beautiful. My Dragon Roll was formed in the shape of a dragon. My friend's sashimi plate looked like a work of art and was topped off with a flower. I've never seen food be so pretty. A slight warning - their portions are HUGE. (I know, such an awful warning.) We always seem to order too much food. If you have a habit of your eyes being bigger than your stomach, be aware of this and order a little less. read more
