We stopped in for lunch as we really enjoy their sushi. It's always super fresh. Kumiko waits on us and is the best. This time, since it was cold out, we had hot sake. It was just a large house one but it was really good. Generally I'm not a fan of sake, but it was really good and worth getting again. We had yummy spicy edamame. My husband had the squid salad which he loves and always orders. We had two rolls wrapped in cucumber- Snowcrab Nurito and Tuna Nurito. They were easy to eat and very fresh and delicious. Although I did pick them up to eat with my fingers. Luckily there were no etiquette police around. I can't figure out how to use chopsticks like my husband. I came in on a Saturday for a late lunch early dinner. Easy to find parking. I was promptly seated and asked what I wanted to drink. I got the crab rangoons (easily the best I have ever had) and two rolls. A bowl of clear soup was brought over. Everything was perfect. Service was great. Everything was very clean. read more

Wishing I could have the mix sashimi plate every day of my life and I'm not kidding. Was so delicious, tasted incredibly fresh and the cuts were ideal. Also got takoyaki which was divine. We have family in Mandeville so we usually visit a couple of times a year. We're always wanting to try new restaurants so decided to try this one. Its located right next door to Cafe du Monde so is easy to find with plenty of parking. The service is very friendly. We were greeted warmly when we arrived. Restaurant looks really nice inside with large mirrors to make the dining area brighter. Two TVs in case you want to watch a game and very accommodating - someone in our party is a Dodgers fan so wanted to watch the World Series so switched one of the TVs even though a Saints game was also on! Nice sushi bar in the back. Very clean overall and modern. Food was all really good. We had curry fries, poke nachos, and an assortment of entrees - I had the sushi combo which I did take a photo of because it was a lot of food and really fresh. Overall we were very happy with the whole experience so will definitely come back when back in the area again! read more

This seems to be a new-ish place. Went for lunch on a week day and wasn't super busy. Service was punctual and the food was good. The preparation and quality of the sushi seemed quite good; I've certainly had much worse sushi in Louisiana. I'm a touch disappointed that they're using foreign crawfish and/or shrimp, but then again, I don't think either are in season right now. And at least they're honest/upfront about it, unlike some places. Overall I'd recommend checking them out. read more

What a glow up this place has gotten!!! It is meticulously clean and beautifully designed. Looks so much bigger inside than it was when it was a ramen restaurant a few months ago! The sushi is beyond compare. The owner had a very well known sushi restaurant on Hwy 59 before, and the quality of the ingredients is very high. If you liked the other restaurant, you'll love Mata! I respect the owners, they are very kind; HOWEVER it really is overpriced for mediocre sushi. Also, the ambiance needs some adjusting (imo). It was too spacious and loud, and the place was not even close to full capacity. The lighting was too bright and the mirrors were too distracting. It feels like eating at a loud cafeteria instead of a private space. For that much money I don't want to hear echoes from every other patron in the building. I hope they can get the kinks worked out before long. read more

We tried this new place with 3 kids in tow. The kids were able to order from a kids menu and from the regular menu. We had a couple of rolls, escolar sashimi, and baked mussels. All were very good. We did takeout for three. We have been living on the North Shore for 9 months and this is the first time we had takeout from a restaurant we would have again and again. We had a number of sushi and rolls as well as crab Rangoon and vegetable rolls. Everything was very good. The restaurant was pristine. The server was courteous and helpful. We did not order in advance as we wanted to see the restaurant and the food preparation stations before deciding to order. Joy. That is what I get when I go here. This place has no equal in service and quality of food. If the world would be visited by aliens I would first recommend this as a gathering place to further discuss the new hierarchy. As such is needed since the nation as a whole is all kinds of f*d up. This is such a great spot for sushi, especially if you have family. The owner is incredibly kind and so are all the staff. The food is always fresh and they have some very cool items on the menu you can't find anywhere else, like Japanese Curry. My kids love coming because they can get big bowls of noodle soup and look at themselves in the wall to wall mirrors while they color. Whether you want ramen, sushi or something a little different, this place is definitely worth checking out. read more
