I am a big fan of the Habitat Suites! This was our second stay here. As it turned out, we got the exact same room, and I'm totally fine with that. Why should you stay here? If you have a family, this is your place. For the same price that you would pay (okay, less) for a hotel elsewhere in Austin, you can bunk everyone. We stay in the king suite, meaning adults get a separate bedroom and children get the pull-out couch in the living room. Other configurations are available that are suitable for larger families or groups. There is no elevator, so be prepared to carry luggage upstairs. The room has a full kitchen, so you're not forced to eat out every night. Breakfast is included, and we're not talking waffles and cereal. The breakfast menu changes daily (choose from three selections), but you can also ask for whatever you like. The first day I had a bowl with steamed broccoli, potatoes, eggs, spinach and cheese. Yum! The next day I had eggs, tomato and spinach over wheat toast. Oatmeal is available, as are biscuits and gravy, bagels, and the rest of the regular lineup. Locally sourced greek yogurt and honeys are available as well. Fresh fruit is offered daily. On Day 2 that meant papaya. Yummy! Each evening offers free beer and wine with snacks, featuring their homemade salsa. My plans in Austin meant I never made it to this, which I consider a failure on my part. The grounds are beautiful, and feature fruit trees and herbs. A guide to what grows where is available in the lobby. Why should you not stay here? You want the five-star experience with bright shiny new everything (there's some peeling wallpaper in places, but everything is clean and well-maintained). You want to party loudly until all hours of the morning. Habitat keeps quiet hours from 9 pm to 8 am. I tend to stay out most of the day and return to sleep, so this place is right at my speed. It's hard for me to think of reasons you wouldn't want to stay here, but I understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea. I did have enough time this visit for some hanging out at the pool, and that was delightful. Habitat Suites are located across from a branch of Austin Community College. This area is undergoing revitalization, which is helpful for the Habitat Suites, I think. On our previous visit, the neighborhood looked a little sketchy. I didn't get that feeling with this visit. This place was definitely apartments before they became a hotel/motel. Not that that's a bad thing but the layout of everything says it was an apartment before. Arriving it may be kind of confusing. It's located all the way in the back. When ever we got an Uber/Lyft they had a slight issue finding the place. They have free breakfast, midday snacks, and WiFi. I believe there's a pool also but we didn't get the chance to look around considering our trip was short. We got a two bedroom room that had an upstairs room and one downstairs. It was very nice for the price point. Everything was kind of old but still was not disgusting. Housekeeping came and delivered extra towels, we didn't even call them. This was a great spot for my recent 4-night stay. It's quiet, comfy, and roomy. It's essentially set up like an apartment with a separate living room, kitchen, and bedroom with bathroom. It was convenient to have the kitchen to store snacks and drinks during the day. Other pros: - Friendly front desk service - Hospitality hour (which was 2 hours) with snacks and a card for three free drinks (wine or beer! - Free continental breakfast, which I didn't have a chance to partake in because my conference started so early every day - Quiet and a peaceful location - Easy to get an Uber or Lyft and depending on traffic, doesn't take long to get downtown or to the airport The only con I would say is it's not necessarily walkable to other restaurants or anything. However, it turned it to be less expensive for me to stay further away and take a rideshare than to stay downtown where my conference was. I can only give 5 starts. For the price you pay (99$ a night) I don't think you can find anything better, more welcoming and nicer than Habitat. I'd categorize this "hotel" in "high-end motel", even though you won't be able to park your car right in front of your room. Habitat site it lovely. Eco friendly, lot of fruit trees, vegetation, old brick houses... They offer complimentary happy hours: few snacks, free beers, wine and soft drinks every day form 5 to 7. Breakfast is also complimentary (as well as the parking by the way! contrary to many expensive hotels located around). Breakfast features organic tea, local Greek yogurt, porridge fruits, nice biscuit and gravy. The best of all is the food stall were you can order savory dishes and where a cook will pretty much accommodate whatever you want, from healthy bowls through omelettes, sandwiches, tacos. Breakfast food was Great. The room: huge. it's a suite. you'll get 2 rooms: 1 living/equipped kitchen and 1 large bedroom, walk in closet, bathroom. King size bed. Everything was clean, bed was firm, room was nice even if few fixtures (especially bathroom)w as a bit on the old side). Each room as a lovely patio with a bench. Ideal to seat and peace off after a long day of work. The best part is the "quite rule" were you are absolutely not supposed to make any nose form 10pm till 6am. Austin is pretty expensive, unless you look and luck out, it's an avg of $275 This place is by a defunct mall about 6 or 7 miles from the Downtown area, and if you have a car, good place to get, with or without friends... comfortable enough but nothing amazing. Vibe... is like a motel and a 2 star chain hotel had a kid, and made it dress up a little. The rooms, decor and appliances are dated, but serviceable. They're worth three stars because it was worth the Groupon cost of sixty something bucks. But full price? No freakin' way. I pulled down the rating down a star to reflect this. "Green" is code for dim lighting, burned-out socketst, '90's-era television sets, a lukewarm hot tub, and mosquitoes. Yes, mosquitoes! Sure, pesticide usage is probably against what this hotel stands for, but damn, we needed a bug zapper! Our suite was infested. My friend killed 10 mosquitoes IN OUR HOTEL ROOM, and one beetle that looked suspiciously enough like a cockroach to warrant it's death. We got one teeny tiny bar of soap. Yes, there's a shampoo and body wash dispenser, but really? Going green doesn't have to mean going cheap, my friend. Some vegetable soap would've been green, not the paper-wrapped Chinese stuff presented; So save your green argument, Habitat Suites. Our suite was very clean (my friend verified this while searching every nook and cranny for other non-paying, six-legged guests). There was a happy hour of queso (the only hot food available, but hey, it's free), pretzels, chips, and surprisingly, beer and boxed wine (three drink limit). The bottle of Shiner helped elevate my spirits some, but the hotel clerks weren't exactly bending over backwards to help us. Yeah, I see you trolling Facebook over there. Now give us more soap! As mentioned previously, the hot tub just wouldn't get hot. The pool was cool, however. Half the sockets were burned out (had to unplug the 12" TV, the alarm clock, and the toaster). I know, it's green and we probably shouldn't be using so much electricity, but come onnnn. I need to charge my cell, my camera battery, and my netbook. And my friend's version of things. The kitchen had pots, pans, real dishes, etc. See photos. The grounds were quiet and beautiful. As we pulled up, there was a collective "Awww" in the car as we saw squirrels and cardinals twitter about. The breakfast, as other reviewers have said before me, was indeed good. Super large rooms! The suite is apartment style, with the bedroom separated from the living room and kitchen. Stayed here for a night while in Austin and have no complaints. Cozy, and very reasonable prices (about $100 on a Sunday). Not too far from downtown, so if you have a car you'll be fine. The guy at the front desk is super nice. I am perplexed by some of the negative reviews here. My experience (four nights) at Habitat Suites was nothing but positive. Helpful, easy, friendly check-in, free happy hour every night. The most amazing free breakfast-truly 4 star food, all organic and very fresh, made to order and brought to your table. Fresh fruit bar, yougurt, whole wheat groats, breakfast tacos, and a choice of entrees. I had a vegetable bowl with fried egg on top one day, and sautéed spinach, cheese and egg on toast another. The food is vegetarian but you won't miss the meat. High quality coffee. Although the week day breakfast ends at 9, I saw customers still being served at 9:30, and they didn't rush you out of the dining room. There's a pleasant small pool, and attractive grounds to walk on. Plenty of parking. The room was large, clean, and had a comfy king bed. Two TVs. Kitchen with stove and frig. The furniture and decor was a little dull, but I really don't care. Front desk called a cab for me when needed. The staff was very pleasant and efficient, especially in the dining room. Spent one night with family at Habitat Suites. It was very reasonably priced, but I'd splurge for nicer accommodations the next time I'm in Austin. The room was clean, but everything looked old and worn down: there was what looked like an old juice stain on the kitchen countertop and another large stain in the bathroom sink. There was a live bug in the bathroom and the shower head was loose from the wall. We received a checking in call from the front desk and when I mentioned the bug, I got an "oh, OK" response. Stayed here during a recent break in-between trips and really liked it. While it could use a little TLC and cosmetic facelifting, it was a very pleasant experience. My suite was a good size with plenty of spread out space in the bedroom and living room. The wifi was strong and the parking was good. The kitchen was functional, but could have been stocked with a few more items: bigger bowls, large knife, etc. I think the only fix would be that my room def needed new carpet, paint, larger TVs, etc. Nothing that would prevent me from coming back, but def feels older and in need of a remodel. I really liked staying at this property, which feels more like staying at an apartment than a hotel. The suites are not without their issues...we had to move halfway through our stay, as the HVAC failed in our first location. The front desk handled it well and got us set up in a larger, 2 bedroom 2 bath suite for the remainder of our visit. The toilet in one of the bathrooms in our new digs didn't flush, but we didn't need the second bathroom anyway, so no real problem there. The property is obviously a bit in need of some updates, and there is no fitness center, but the great things about this place offset some of these issues for me. On to those. As I mentioned, the property has an apartment complex feel to it, and is nicely landscaped with lots of trees, bushes and flowers everywhere. It's lovely, and has a wonderful homey feel. Breakfast is included with the stay, and it's obvious to me that these people care. Many of the items on the buffet are organic, and they're being very conscientious about their food choices. I truly appreciate this, as I spend a lot of time on the road and try to eat healthy when I travel. Even the coffee in our room was organic. They also have a manager's reception every night with complementary wine, beer and healthy snacks. Such a nice touch, which went a long way toward increasing the home-like feel of the hotel. The staff was unfailingly polite, helpful and friendly. The dish soap and shampoo in the rooms were clearly eco friendly brands...another fact that made me really happy. It even seemed that the people who stay here were friendlier...perhaps this property attracts like minded folks who share the values of the owners. If you're looking for a swanky hotel with high end finishes and fancy amenities, then this place is probably not for you. I'll preface my review with this: 3 stars is not necessarily bad. It was not dirty, it was not run down, it's just not luxury accommodation. Habitat Suites is a good hotel for the budget-conscious traveler. We stayed here during the US Grand Prix. Hotel prices during the USGP went up dramatically as downtown hotels could jack up the price due to the vastly increased demand. Our goal was to find a moderately-priced hotel for 4 adults. The hotel property was obviously a condominium complex some time before, having been renovated into hotel suites. The rooms are suites in that they are large enough for multiple adults and have two rooms, not that they are overly luxurious. The rooms were quiet, though a bit gloomy. The fixtures inside were somewhat dated, but the room included a living room, kitchenette, and wood fireplace (fire logs are available at the front desk for a few dollars). The upstairs room was a loft that had been converted into the second bedroom. It had its own private entry from the outside. The rooms could use a little updating. The carpets are old, the ceilings had some water spots. Like I said before, though, everything was clean. Every night, from 5-7, guests are offered 3 free drinks (bud light or wine) in the breakfast room. Breakfast is a buffet consisting of coffee, tea, eggs, potatoes, cereal, fruit, oatmeal, toast, bagels, and yogurt. Breakfast is passable. Nothing great, but it will save you money on a cheap meal. Just one night, but my impression is good. The grounds, the breakfast, and the staff were all brilliant. The location can seem a bit dodgy because it's near a defunct mall. However, the property is up a short drive, and that seems to isolate it in a pleasing and reassuring way. This location is also convenient to most of Austin, provided you are driving. The grounds are full of interesting plants. The AC worked like a champ. The place was quiet. The bed was comfortable. There was a luggage rack. I plan to stay here again. I really liked this hotel. We stayed for 6 nights so it was nice to have a full kitchen. Also, the prices weren't bad. We got a 1 bedroom suite. We booked online and it said washer/dryer but the only one is a room off the lobby. It's .75 for wash then .75 for drying. Not too bad at least compared to my own apartment complex. Yes, the location isn't great as it's across from a dead mall and right next to a strip joint, that at night you can hear the music from the parking lot. But it's what you pay for. The happy hour was nice and max 3 drinks. The happy hour also had hummus and cheese (which I love). The complimentary breakfast includes vegetarian sausage, bacon, and eggs. The staff at the front desk, happy hour, and breakfast were all super friendly. The only downfall is somehow my boyfriend kept getting allergy attacks and I kept getting hives (even after we requested the sheets changed). Not sure what it was. Location: Honestly, I still don't know where this Sugars place is, but I didn't even see it at all. Yes, the location is slightly weird, but if you have your own transportation, it's not a big deal. Staff: Very friendly and helpful. Check in was a breeze, and they promptly called me a cab at my request. They also informed me of the social hour when I checked in, which was great for unwinding after a long drive. Grounds: Green and well maintained. I love the idea of the edible landscape, but I didn't have the pleasure of partaking on this particular visit. Also, salt water pool. Amenities: I would not qualify this as the most amenity centered hotel, but it does feature a salt water pool, and a full kitchen. Also, free breakfast and social hour. You can tell it used to be an old apartment complex, but it makes for a very homey feel. Very cozy and peaceful place to stay at. It doesn't feel like we were staying at hotel. It felt like we were staying at our second home. Very big room - we had two bedrooms, two bathrooms, living room, and full size kitchen. Perfect for family of four. Breakfast were awesome! We went there every morning before going out to do our actives. Daily breakfast is scrambled eggs, biscuit with gravy, hash potatoes, sausage, and oatmeal. Then they'll have a special item every day which was French toasts on Tuesday then pancakes on Wednesday, and waffles on Thursday. Today was apple cinnamon roll. It was very good. My family and I will come back here when we are in town. Yes, it's almost in middle of nowhere but that's good - it was peaceful and had good sleep while staying there. People that left negative reviews about this about not being updated. To me, it looks good and everything works well. TVs works great. The shower pressure was awesome!! Hard pressure. Better than regular hotels. The staff at this place were very friendly and help you to make sure you're comfortable. Have outdoor pool but the water was too cold but good size. Stayed here on a business trip with my clients...at one point I asked the employee at the front desk what DIRECTION a certain room number was, her response was "that's confidential"...lady, the numbers on the doors. I just needed to know what direction to walk as the layout of this "hotel" was a little confusing. But she refused to help... With that, this place was strange and dingy. Location was okay, not too far from downtown. The room was old-feeling, wallpaper peeling everywhere, cracked floor tiles in the bathroom, no plugs directly next to the bed, no blackout curtains, and my main complaint was the knob to control water temperature in the shower was broken...and breakfast was just okay... read more

The rooms could also use some weather stripping as the windows and doors let in a ton of cold air. Two of the lamps in my room did not work upon check in. The breakfast was okay but pretty limited. It's also located near an abandoned mall, and a strip club (didn't appear like one of those ghetto strip clubs, but we didn't go inside so couldn't tell you). We stayed here while vacationing in the Austin area. The room was comfy and met our needs. The pool is small but water was nice and warm. The breakfast was great and so was the evening happy hour complimentary drinks. All the staff was very friendly. We would stay here again. If you are expecting luxury and state of the art appliances, this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for a quiet, clean, friendly place to stay and can over look some of the hotel shortcomings, you can't go wrong with this place. The happy hour snacks could use some attention. Also the landscape around the pool, I told the staff about the bees in the shrubs around the pool and it seemed they listened and were doing something about it. The rooms themselves are not new, but they serve their purpose. Bed was comfy. Full size fridge and dishes were a plus. The house keeper didn't vacuum our room every day, but that was her, so I'm not going to knock the entire staff / property for it. They could improve on that and giving you a few extra towels. We stayed 3 nights over the 4th of July weekend and overall it was great!! PROs: We are family of 4 with children ages 5 and 7. So, the two bedroom suite was perfect! King sized bed and full bathroom downstairs and queen sized bed and full bath upstairs made our stay very comfortable. The stairs are very steep so people with younger children may want to be cautious. The beds were comfortable despite many reviews saying they were not. Breakfast is vegetarian but very tasty. There is a rotating menu with 3 items to choose from but they always have biscuits and gravy, oatmeal and other bread items. They also have fresh fruit. I found the breakfast to be a thoughtful touch to this hotel. The evening reception is very nice! Drinks and snacks from 5-7pm most days. The price is very reasonable!! The hotel grounds are clean and very quiet and peaceful. The staff were attentive and courteous! Thank you!! CONs: The rooms themselves are VERY outdated. There were huge cracks in the bathroom tiles. The sinks come up to your thighs and I am not tall at all. The shower is very strange-the hot water never really got hot and the nozzle didn't work properly. The shower head is very low with light water pressure. The appliances all work but are very old school. I didn't even know how to use the microwave honestly. It had dials on it. The TV was fine but no access to apps which is not a big deal but I was hoping to catch up on some Netflix. The pool is nice but small so gets crowded easily. The hotel is in a very run down area so nothing is within walking distance. Overall, the experience was nice. For me, the pros definitely outweighed the cons. I am thoroughly impressed with my stay at Habitat Suites. Matthew and I arrived in Texas much earlier than we expected to. Given that we had been traveling all night and couldn't bear to stay up until check in at 3 pm, we decided to head over and try our luck and pray to whatever God was out there that someone would take pity on us & check us in at 6 am. The receptionist didn't even hesitate to check us in early, and things at Habitat Suites just got better from there. Every morning, they serve a complimentary all organic breakfast complete with fresh fruit, toasts, cereals, biscuits and (vegetarian) gravy, coffee and tea, milk (regular or soy), and a small kitchenette were you can order a hot breakfast if you'd like. Did I mention that ALL their food options are organic? They've got a beautiful pool and courtyard where they serve complimentary beer, wine, and snacks every evening from 5-7. And the best part? They're environmentally friendly! You'll find phosphate-free all natural soap in your kitchen and brochures highlighting the measures they take to reduce waste water and chemical pollution. Towels and bedding are changed every three days, unless you'd like them every night and even then they're happy to do so. This will be the only hotel I recommend to friends and family when they come to visit Austin. It's beautiful, affordable, and they know how to take care of their guests. The first two days great from decent customer service and even breakfast food but then day three coming back from a mini road trip we walked into our hotel room to find cock roaches! The receptionist at the desk when notified we found a cockroach replied with a sigh and says, "Would you like another room?" No! THIS HOTEL HAS BED BUGS!!!!! DO NOT STAY HERE!!!! This hotel is absolutely crawling with bed bugs, cockroaches and spiders. We checked in about 7pm after a long day of travel, went to get into bed at about 10:30 only to find both the upstairs and downstairs crawling with bedbugs when the sheets were pulled away. After visiting the front desk we were told we were lying and were refused a refund for any of the 3 nights (over $1000) we were planning to stay. Let me say that again I WAS ON THE PHONE UNTIL AFTER MIDNIGHT TRYING TO FIND A NEW HOTEL BECAUSE THIS ONE HAD BEDBUGS AND REFUSED BELIEVE ME OR DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE FACT THERE WERE BEDBUGS IN BOTH BEDS!!!!!! A few days later I called again to ask about an additional charge I had found on my card from the hotel along with following up on getting a refund only to be told "they had looked in the room and found no bedbugs" and was then hung up on by the employee who had answered the phone. I am absolutely disgusted by both the behavior of the staff and the bedbugs. This hotel is absolutely horrible... I have already contacted both banks involved & will continue to press this matter as far as needed until I receive a full refund! read more

The reviews on this one are mixed and for the exact reason that others marked it low, we loved it. We booked this on a deal on Travelocity with a flight and got a great price, and we chose this hotel because of its awesome sustainability initiatives: sustainable water pumps, low lights, plants in the room, and even a block in the freezer explaining that a fuller freezer uses less energy. Oh, and a fireplace! We had a car, so the isolated location was not a bother, and the location was close to the things we wanted to do in Austin. The rooms were huge - a big living room with a couch and recliner, a full kitchen, and a huge bedroom. The furniture was clearly worn; the couch was a bit threadbare and somewhat salvaged feel to the decor but our bed was a king size dream, comfy and clean. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and there was a great breakfast (vegetarian friendly!) and a happy hour daily with beer, wine, and snacks. We wish we could have used the pool and jacuzzi but it was 40 degrees, so we lit a fire (they sell duralogs at the front desk, or you can get real wood), and relaxed inside. This would be a great place for couples, families, and even groups of college students on spring break or SXSW. read more

We started in room 1113 for a 4 night stay. The bathroom smelled like urine and the toilet wobbled so we thought the toilet leaked. On our second morning I was handling my business in the bathroom when the upstairs neighbor flushed their toilet and pee scented water dripped profusely from the ceiling on to my head and down my face... The manager never contacted us during the duration of our stay even though we had the desk clerk document all of this and were advised the manager would see the notes. read more

This place is really fantastic if you're looking for a cozy, eco-conscious place to stay. We enjoyed our original stay so much that this has become our default hotel choice when we're visiting Austin. Rates are reasonable for either their one or two room suites. They're not super trendy looking or modern, but the rooms are spacious and very comfortable. A one room family slept our family of 4 very very comfortable with plenty of room for our 2yrs old to stretch his legs. They've updated their TVs and couches since our last stay which was nice. Beds were large and cozy. We stopped in for happy hour and the selection of munchies was nice and healthy and very vegetarian friendly: hummus, salsa, crudités, pita chips, dolmas, olives, etc. they requested a 3 drink limit but offered an assortment of beer and wine in addition to iced tea, lemonade, and coffee. Breakfast was excellent and again they had plenty of vegetarian options. A sample of what they offered was made to order omlettes, oatmeal, potatoes, French toast, turkey sausage, homemade biscuits and gravy, fruit, yogurt and others. Staff was friendly and helpful throughout the whole experience. I accidentally left a baby sling there after check out and they helped us out in getting it back. Yes, it is a unique experience. If you want a sterile feel with perfectly manicured grounds and impersonal staff go to a different hotel. But this place has cozy relaxing groups and pro-conservation. As a teacher who visits Austin several times a year we had high hopes. I was sorely disappointed. This aging 1980's apartment complex was re-purposed into a hotel, but now is failing and a good stay experience is random and inconsistent. PROS: some folks get lucky and visit at off-times when it's quiet and peaceful here. It can be charming when turnout is low. CONS: outdated rooms, stale smells. Parties allowed to happen on the balconies at 1am until visitors call to complain. Parties move indoors where even ear plugs don't help. We hoped the breakfast that was boasted would help, but the tiny kitchen and dining area was quickly over-flowed and a lengthy wait ensued. BOTTOM LINE-stay here at your own risk. Some folks accidentally visit at off peak times and enjoy it here. This place has potential, but service is slipping and conditions deteriorating. If your idea of a green, quiet habitat is a cruise ship docking and dumping an overload of people, then this is your place. I wish this was just an isolated case of us being an exception and us just having one bad visit. It isn't. What happened to us is a pattern and obvious once you visit here. We had no sleep while staying here this trip. Habitat failed miserably, however well intentioned it used to be. ******UPDATED 6/3/2016******** The management of Habitat Suites reached out to me regarding my concerns and was very apologetic. They promised to investigate why the party was allowed to happen and would increase patrols. They also offered a generous credit for the trouble. Because of management reaching out and seeming genuinely sincere to improve customer experiences, I would be willing to give them another chance. The next time, however, I will request a top floor, just to be safe. Even if that means walking to the 3rd floor. read more

This place has roaches! On my first night I was lying in bed watching TV and I saw a huge roach crawl across the wall. I got up to kill it, by the time I got my shoe to kill it it was gone. It was after midnight and I was tired from traveling so I decided I would contact the front desk in the morning. Needless to say I didn't sleep much out of fear that a roach would crawl into my ear. I woke the next morning to find another huge roach in my bathroom. This time I took a picture and went to the front desk to complain. I requested a room change, which they obliged (and is the only reason they got 2 stars instead of one). I went about my day hoping the roach situation was resolved. Much to my disappointment when I returned to my room later that evening I discovered 2 more roaches. With only 1 day left to my stay I decided to suck it up. But I "slept" with the lights on and checked my luggage several times to make sure I didn't have any stow aways I would be taking home with me. Habitat Suites - Just gross! - Hotels Near Me - Austin, Texas

I want to start out with saying the staff and cleaners were amazing. I went half in with a roommate and got a 2 bedroom suite. The location of these are sort of close to downtown, you have a good selection of where to eat from what's around Habitat. I averaged a $40 Uber to and from for four days riding to 6th, and Rainey Street. Happy hour at habitat was from 1700-1900 and you get three free drinks. They had Chardonnay, two other wines one was red, bud light, dos XX, and a local beer. I didn't get one hot shower while I was here, I'm not sure what was up with the outdated showers but I couldn't get it to work even with asking how to use it from staff. I didn't have a bad time here but it would have been way cheaper staying in a hostel vs the amount we paid for four nights here. This place seemed like somewhere mature people get sent out on business trips to. read more

I'm sorry, but the 5-star reviews here sound suspicious. You cannot rate this hotel 5 stars. I stayed here during SXSW because it was on their list of "show hotels" and it was on their shuttle route, and ones closer in were sold out. My main objection is that the staff is inexplicably clueless about a few basic hotel things. For instance, the entrance is a double glass door with a small overhanging roof and a bench. There's about 5 feet of sidewalk between the street and the door. The problem is that the curb is about 8" high, and the doors are not electric. So if you're on your own with more than a couple suitcases, it's difficult to maneuver them in. There are no luggage carts. How much effort would it take to get a little wooden ramp and a couple door stops? I was flabbergasted that they would just placidly watch their new guests struggle in the door -- the front desk is about 10 feet away -- year after year without doing something about it . This hotel is cute on the interior, but the place itself is IN THE MIDDLE OF A HUGE ABANDONED OUTDOOR SHOPPING MALL next to I35. They don't tell you that on their web page. They are seriously in the middle of nowhere. There is nothing within walking distance, esp. at night when it's spooky out there. They have no restaurant. If you want food, you better have a car, because they sell NOTHING ... not even a little snack shop. If you forget deodorant or want a bag of chips or need some aspirin ... sorry buddy. (again ... how can they exist as a "hotel" for years without even thinking their guests might appreciate some sundries for sale? They'll call you a cab if you like. Cabs are $20 from the hotel to downtown. That's assuming you can get one out to you if something's happening downtown. The breakfast is great. Major signs all over the place telling you not to bring any back to your room, though. That's a first for me. So there are no paper plates or anything. Like other reviews, the rooms are clean, but old, with the world's oldest and smallest televisions. The one in the living room is a 17" CRT inside a floor cabinet (not on top). They do get HBO. If you sit on the floor in front of it you can see a decent picture. The bed is large but too firm. The lights are dim. The kitchen is clean with appliances from the early 80s. Other good: The place is quiet. The kitchen/wait staff is GREAT ... very friendly and helpful. Pool looks pretty. Fast and free wi-fi. But because they appear so clueless about basic needs of guests, I would not stay here again, ever. I would use craigslist.com or airbandb.com if I were in the same situation (in Austin, all other hotels sold out). The "green" thing is a marketing gimmick. Brown toilet paper, a couple live plants. Habitat Suites rocks for multiple reasons: 1.Green, green, green. The most sustainable, amazingly conscious hotel I have ever stayed at and they have been that way before it seemed important. 2. Great suites, one and two bedroom with kitchen, which let's me cook when I want, which saves me money and is more healthy. 3. The grounds are gorgeous! Fig trees bursting with ripe figs, native landscaping, lovely pool and hot tub not overloaded with chlorine. Could use some aesthetic work, but water is clean. Truly an oasis along I-35. 4. Free Breakfast and happy hour. Great breakfast where you can get hearty whole grain cereal, or bacon and eggs. Starbucks coffee, Tazo tea and regularly stocked black tea from China. Offer Sucanat, not just sugar. Even udon noodle soup for Asian travelers. 5. Staff is great, but they are light staffed on weekends, so just be aware. Cons: Location is odd, but the access to I-35 is relatively easy if you use St. John's exit. Yes, Sugar's is next door. Ignoring it is easy. Highland Mall is not a destination of any kind, so hop on the highway to shop elsewhere. Also, it is an older hotel, so furniture is dated to early 90's. Could use a fashion update in the rooms, but otherwise clean. I've stayed here and family has stayed here multiple times. I actually lived here 30 days after a house fire and loved it. read more

I really wished this place was better. I want to be about "going-green" and saving energy and caring about the environment, but places like this only perpetuate the idea that having that mind-set means you can have high-quality high-appeal products/service. This place is cheap. They intend to be cheap in their service. The price was about the same for area hotels, so I'm not sure why they couldn't do a better job. The outside garden and walkways are very beautiful with flowering and fruit filled plants. They also offer a good continental breakfast and a very nice appetizer/drink happy hour -- for free!! But the inside of the rooms is not close to as beautiful as the outside. Like other reviewers stated, the rooms are very outdated. The carpet is old and has an old smell to it. Not an overpowering odor, just kinda old smell. The TVs are from the early 90s I think, I haven't seen a TV that small and old since in a hotel, in a very long time. One of the two tvs in my room didn't work, but I guess that's okay since there was a second TV. And like other people have said, this is was previously an apartment/condo community that was restored some time ago as a hotel. The doors and windows all face the outside, but I didn't really have a problem with that. Overall, this place isn't terrible but could have been so much better. New carpet, drapes, appliances, and tvs would be an immediate must. I'm sure they know all of this, but just don't have the money for it. I'm sorry to say, next time I'm in Austin, I won't be staying at this location. read more
