Overall, I liked this hotel and had a positive stay, but there are some notable drawbacks worth mentioning. During busy times, the hotel feels overcrowded, elevator waits can be long, parking is difficult with the valet when it's busy, and the check-in area can get backed up as well. The lobby bar is very pretty but gets busy on Friday and Saturday nights. Unfortunately, my Bonvoy Gold Elite status was not honored nor did I receive any benefits from it which was disappointing. That said, the rooms were cozy and comfortable, and aside from the capacity issues, I really don't have major complaints about the stay itself. It feels like the hotel could benefit from better crowd management or more space to handle peak times. Dining and amenities were strong highlights. In-room dining was excellent, and breakfast at The Peacock stood out with very flavorful, tasty dishes. I'll provide a separate feedback for it. The gym is one of the best I've seen at a hotel well equipped, including Pilates tables, a steam room, and overall great facilities. The massage spa was also excellent and very relaxing. pricing is reasonable for the massage at a high end hotel. Goldie's, the bar in the evening, and the tea and coffee spot in the morning (with pastries) were especially warm and welcoming - easily one of the highlights of the stay. I'd rate this closer to a 4-minus, mainly due to pricing which come with some expectations. In my humble opinion, the hotel is a bit overpriced for what it offers. I stayed at the Proper for a work trip and enjoyed my stay. The decor is absolutely beautiful; very stylish and thoughtfully designed, and the room itself was a highlight. I stayed in a spacious room with a separate living area and bedroom, which made it feel comfortable and relaxing rather than cramped. That said, the lobby was almost always crowded, and the hotel overall felt very busy. With that came a fair amount of noise, especially in the common areas, which took away a bit from the otherwise luxe experience. Still, if you're looking for a well-designed hotel with great rooms and don't mind a lively atmosphere, this is a solid choice. Underwhelming for the price. We decided to come for a family trip and we were disappointed by the pool area. No hot tub. Very small and not for kids. If we had known this wasn't a family-friendly hotel, we would've stayed elsewhere. The rooms are fine, but the bathroom counters are tiny. We had to pull the ironing board out to add extra space for our things. Also, there are no ice machines. Very odd. We had to ask for ice at the restaurant, but who wants to go downstairs when you're in your room already and comfortable? You can probably read these reviews and learn all about this hotel, but I can easily say, one thing stood out beyond everything else. I would come back here, simply for the gym. I've stayed at a lot of hotels over the years, but I have definitely never seen something like this before. If I didn't know I was at a hotel, I would have assumed it was a stand alone upscale gym. From full squat and deadlift racks, to pilate and box jumps, they have something for everything. If you're not sure what to do, head over to the Tonal machine or Peloton bike to select a workout for you. All while overlooking the water and bridge to get your day started. Finally, finish off with a steam room service before heading back to the room to start your day. I was impressed. Outside of the gym, we did dinner and breakfast at Peacock and both were incredible. All in all, we were there for less than 24 hours and were incredibly happy with our time spent. We grabbed our own luggage which was very doable however we were not asked if they could help get it out of the car for us. Upon entering we were very happy with the air being in full blast as it was 96 degrees outside. *** Things were really stepped up when we were greeted by Oscar at the front desk. He was so pleasant, knowledgeable and very cheerful. Explained everything and was the only one who offered us a water. Where do I begin? Our stay here was absolutely exceptional! If you're just skimming, here are the highlights: 1. The staff were consistently friendly and courteous. 2. Now for the details: My husband and I stayed here for six days to celebrate my birthday and enjoy a bit of relaxation before I started law school. From the moment we arrived, the service exceeded our expectations. Valet staff promptly took care of our car and bags, and check-in took just a couple of minutes. The front desk team was incredibly helpful in answering our many questions about the hotel and its amenities. We stayed in the Grand Room King with a pool view on the 11th floor. The Peacock, in particular, had some really creative dishes and beautiful decor, I often found myself admiring the attention to detail between bites. Tyler provided excellent service and had great recommendations. The hotel does get lively on weekends, especially in the bars and restaurants, but it never felt disruptive. Access to guest-only areas like the rooms and pool is well-managed, so our stay remained peaceful even when the public spaces were buzzing with activity. We stayed here during the week, and the experience left us feeling that at best this is a 4 star hotel. Hotel decor nicely done. Hotel managers we encountered deserve 1 star for service. Neither realized we were hotel guests and assumed we were only visiting bar/service, just terrible service and they tried correcting behavior once it was learned we were lodging guests. That said, room service was excellent along with hotel check in. Valet was incredible, they work hard to ensure you're not waiting long for your vehicle. Very crowded in common dining and bar area in the evenings and guests incredibly loud at night. Not a place that's relaxing. Breakfast at Peacock was superb, food was flavorful and service was impeccable (it was the only time we felt this hotel deserved 5 star rating). The is worst proper location in terms of service in the whole Proper family which is really unfortunate. I had several issues with my stay. I waited over 3 hours for my room service and still wasn't able to have my food cooked at the temperature requested. The managers there while nice, don't connect with each other so I had to consistently tell the same story over and over. When I decided to eat at the restaurants, service was slow both at La piscina and at Peacock. I went to Peacock for breakfast and while the restaurant was very empty, it was just slow. I had to get up and go to the kitchen to get some ketchup for my potatoes because the server never came back to check that we had everything we needed. At La Piscina I ordered tacos and they were SO oily it was really disturbing. While they eventually took the food off of my bill the experience itself was just horrible. If I go to and pay for a luxury hotel I Mac expecting a luxury experience. I booked this stay for work so they had two cards on file and then charged the wrong card when it was all said and done. When I pointed it out to them , they said they'd fix it and send me a folio. I went to my event and a few hours later went back to the hotel since I hadn't received my folio. I called the hotel 5 times but no one answered so instead of going to the airport I had to go back to the hotel to understand what was going on. They finally printed me my folio and told me they would email. To this day I have yet to receive the emailed folio. This place is not a luxury hotel and hotel doesn't run at the proper standard or a bonvoy standard. It is really unfortunate because the layout alone is beautiful but that's about the only thing beautiful here. There are so many other places to stay, I'd never return to the Austin Proper. read more

I was here for a work meeting and stayed 3 days. Gorgeous, modern hotel located close to the river in Austin's business district. It has a summery resort feel. The pool was a major highlight for me. The lounge chairs are first-come-first-serve. The pool is less than 4ft deep, so perfect for wading and drinking a cocktail at the edge. Not to mention, some kind of complementary snack comes out about once per hour (the mango sorbet is delicious). All of the staff from the concierge to front desk, to restaurants, to door-people, etc. were kind, welcoming, and accommodating. read more

I'm truly surprised by Austin Proper Hotel's relatively low Yelp rating - I loved every minute of our recent weekender here. From the check-in process to the on-demand virtual concierge experience, the staff was friendly and readily available to help. I also loved all the room amenities - Aesop bath products, Parachute bathrobes, Boxed Water, Nespresso, smart TV. There was also complimentary coffee/tea as well as small bites down at Goldie's Sunken Bar every morning from 6-10 AM. The weekend that we were in town was rainy so we weren't able to enjoy much of the pool or the rooftop area. We popped into the gym to check it out though and it was spacious, had a ton of equipments, and even offered warm towels. If we didn't have such a jam-packed itinerary, I'd have loved to relax more at the hotel and try out their restaurants. 100/10 would come back and stay here again! read more

I used my Amex Platinum card to book this through the FHR program and the benefits were well worth it. As soon as we entered the hotel, we felt like we'd been transported to another world. The staff was super friendly and gave us a warm welcome. We had reservations at La Piscina and when we got back to our room, there was a fresh fruit plate waiting. The room is gorgeous and beautifully designed. I also loved that all the bath products were from Aesop. The bed was so comfortable and I felt like I was able to really relax. We had been looking forward to going to The Quill Room and had made a reservation for 6 p.m. on a Saturday night. We arrived around 5:50 p.m. and were told we could wait for the bar to open. Around 6:10 p.m. we had been chatting and figured they were running behind. It wasn't until 6:30 p.m. when we checked in with them that they reported they had an event earlier in the day and had decided to open at 7 p.m. that day instead. Our reservation was not cancelled and we had received no notification of this change - not to mention just letting us know as we were sitting in the bar. Once informed, there was no offer to open the bar or make any accommodations. I would not recommend making a reservation here as it does not seem that they will honor it - or even offer alternatives or apology. read more

Most beautifully decorated hotel I've ever been to. Everything is picturesque, unique, and super clean. Staff is very professional and delivered us anything we requested/forgot within minutes. I have never been to a hotel where I wanted to explore every inch of it. Room was a standard two Queen - spacious, well decorated, and spotless. Good use of space. I liked the nespresso machine, speaker option, daily bottle of water, and collection of Aesop bath products. They had a thank you with baklava from the restaurant downstairs for being a Marriott Titanium member. From 6am-10am every morning, you can go to Goldie which is their sunken bar for a full coffee/tea bar and pastry of the day. La Piscina, the poolside restaurant, was fantastic and reasonably priced for lunch. At the pool, staff greets you with a box of water and fresh fruit. I was hesitant to go enter Texas. Like most women not on Fox New I'm keen to control my own uterus and Texas doesn't like that. On the other hand I've had many dreams about having oil money. I'd have a tastefully enormous chateau on straight lane, a matte black G Wagon l, probably like 7 Monets, a place in deer valley and id spend all day shopping at highland park village. But I'll settle for a few days at the Austin Proper. Let's cut to the chase. This place is decorated like your richest coolest friends apartment. Not the one that married that hedge fund dweeb who's grand parents have that shitty old house north of the highway in Amagansett. We have stayed here twice for quick weekends away, since we live in Austin. Along with the great location, we love the beautiful decor and ambiance around the bar/restaurant. Everyone from the valet, front desk, waitstaff was so very friendly. My favorite part of our stay was the bed... omg so very comfortable, I slept so deep. We have reservations to return end of May, and really looking forward to it! The energy of the bar is fantastic but we personally weren't impressed with the food. The ambiance is incredibly loud, the couches and dim lighting seems like they're trying to give it a cozy sexy vibe which would be amazing if it didn't sound like you're in a cafeteria. We were very unimpressed with the drinks. I am happy to spend good money on a good drink, but I wouldn't have described any of our drinks as good, mediocre at best. For a Christmas treat last year we stayed in one of their suites for Christmas Eve, day and Boxing Day. We have been staycationing in Austin and San Antonio the past few months, getting out travel mojo back on track from the pandemic absence. The Proper got lots of ahh's and ouu's from folks, so we got ourselves hooked up. I will say the entrance is a bit deceiving and you can almost miss it, but we found our way and got out car valet. We live about 10 mins from the hotel and why we always think we will need our car, we don't and parking it at the hotel was $60 a night, plus tax/tip if I recall. I knew this going in and from now on, we will uber back and forth to our hotels during our exploration of the hotel's downtown. A silly waste of money if you have alternatives to work with. Valet's were very cheery and welcoming in the cold blustery wind that greeted us on this Christmas Eve afternoon. We made our way in to a modern/funky lobby area. Said hello to the frog sculpture and checked in. All was in good order and confirmed, bell man stood by with our luggage and brought us up to our room. He made sure we understood how everything in the room worked and put up our luggage. The room was fairly large, with the typical little living area, master bath and then the bedroom. Our view was pretty decent with a view of Town Lake and the high rises that dot the Austin Scene these days. Big TV's, which you can hook up your phone to for all the streaming channels you may own. There was a cool little radio which could you also synch your music from you phone to, but we never were able to figure it out. That is probably on us, didn't miss not being used. Bathroom was well appointed, nice shower, plenty of towels and the like. The room was clean and up to date. As from our experience, the couch was well used, so not exactly incredibly comfortable, but when we just hanged around, I found myself laying out in the bedroom watch the telly. The furniture seemed a little large for the space. I did enjoy a $15 jar of M&M's and there were other munchies available at the usual ridiculous pricing you find in hotels. We hastily made our way downstairs for a drinky to start the celebrations at the lobby bar which is part of the Peacock restaurant where we planned for Dinner on the 25th. It was fairly early in the afternoon and there was a few staff behind the bar, but they seemed to be shift changing or just hanging around catching up with each other. After awhile, I got there attention and finally we were able to get the party started. We ordered a Humus Plate and a few drinks and hung out while we came up to the time for us to have or Eve dinner at The Thompson. Hummus was yummy and my rita was well made and we were attended to with aplomb once we eventually got going. It's a nice space, with couches and comfy chairs around the bar itself. There are some nice art pieces around and about the hotel. Bags of different amenities. Bike rental, Tesla available, swimming pool and a posh spa comes to mind. We didn't take advantage of these. There are multiple eating places and a private bar area for registered guests, more on that in another review to come. I mean if I would to rate this up to Hotel Emma in San Antonio or Commodore Perry Estate, Thompson in San Antonio I would rank this towards the middle. It had a bit of a small feel to it, although it seems like a massive property. Service was great on the most part, no complaints there. Our room was cleaned daily and everyone had a smile on their face despite working during the heart of Christmas. Interesting fact. When we returned home, my Suzie thought she may have left a jumper at the hotel. She didn't want to fuss with it, so whatever. A day later I get a call from the hotel housekeeping letting us know we had left behind some items. She called back and then realized she had left an entire drawer of knickers/bras, shirts and the jumper. Inevitably, she may have figured out something was missing and just would of gone nuts wondering what happened. She arranged to go pick them up and the house keeping attendant met her in the lobby and refused to take a gratuity. It would of been a few hundy's to replace what she left, so job done and thank you Proper for your honesty in letting us know it was left behind. read more

This review is specifically for The Quill Room, a semi-secluded bar on the second floor of The Austin Proper Hotel. (I don't believe that they have a dedicated Yelp profile.) I don't speak French nor do I claim to have an in-depth grasp of the pronunciation of French words but I feel like most Americans can pronounce French words like "Croque Monsieur." Well, two separate servers mispronounced three different words from the menu. I'm not going to hold this against the bar itself but it's an example of how I would expect higher standards from McGuire-Moorman-Lambert staff. Technically the Quill Room debuted in January 2023 but the space has been open to the public for only about five months. The Old World European ambiance and the french-inspired menu is impressive but I'm not sure that they're pulling things off as well as they could. Four cocktails on the menu boasted components such as Jalapeño-Infused Mezcal, Rose Water, Elderflower, Grapefruit, Rosemary, Orgeat, and Angostura (not all together in one cocktail!) so I was very excited. My initial impression was that these cocktails were right up my alley. When I inquired with the bartender about which of the four might be the most spirit-forward, he reported that they're all equally so. After trying two of them, I was disappointed and just ordered my next round off-menu instead. The "Monk's Respite" (Green Chartreuse, Velvet Falernum, Pineapple, Lime, Mint) was underwhelming at first but the cocktail grew on me as time went on. (Side-note: I'm happy that they offer spirit-free options but skip the non-alcoholic espresso martini. It's terrible. And the server also mispronounced the word "respite." And I don't think that that one is derived from the French language.) I'm not one to complain about the cost of a well-crafted drink but at $22 - $24 per cocktail, I'd expect a bit more innovation. And there were a few blunders with service which were quite a turnoff. My date's cocktail arrived at the table well after mine had been sitting for a few minutes. When the server ultimately delivered, it was accompanied with an apology about something not printing in the back. I didn't fully understand. And then the same thing happened with the Crispy Pommes Frites. We had to check in to see if they had been forgotten. The server was charming for sure, but he seemed not entirely focused on the tasks at hand. read more

The check in was seemless and got upgraded from king to king premier. Didn't really know the difference. Was sad that they didn't have a bathtub cause the shower was so wide and massive. They provided a complimentary Prosecco/boxed water which was nice. I was also able to get a late check out with my Amex card benefits. The only thing I would give -1 star was because the whole hotel was freezing. It's like they didn't have heaters for the main floor or any of the hallways. And the restaurant was cold too, it was a little difficult to enjoy the food shivering. Overall aesthetic very woody hotel but sadly not much around there to do during the cold. Spent the night after a downtown soirée. Glad we used points... Nice valet. Easy check-in, although if the front desk thanked me one more time I may have vomited. Once is enough, twice is fine, 18x/encounter is obnoxious. Room was great. Nicely appointed. Comfy bed. Loved the oversized shower. Bonus: No street noise. Upon walking down Second Street I gazed up at this new building, and looked quite modern and very unique. On the street level it was quite dead and saw the biggest doors I have ever seen with Proper sign on top of them. I pulled hard to open it and quickly noticed inside was packed with people. It was like I cracked a nutshell. The lobby was gorgeous with artistic luxury touches. I have to felt this feeling since I walked inside a Tony Burch store. The interior also had a natural earthy feel and excited to explore it all. The check-in area was museum quality, the elevator hallway was mesmerizing, and pottery pieces proudly displayed next to the lobby bar. And this bar was packed and practicing social gathering. Next to it is a restaurant called Peacock which is a Mediterranean Grill. The menu did look appetizing but will try at a later date. I did read earlier to must-see the staircase which resembled a large optical illusion. Each step on this wooden staircase takes you up to a world of unknown. Eventually ended up on a level of ballrooms and conference rooms. There was a spectacular outside patio where you have the whole Seaholm District in full view with Shoal Creek below. This is the place to enjoy your drinks at night. Back downstairs and out the Peacock front doors I found the Kempelen's Owls perched out in front. These spooky two owl sculptures have eyes that follow you. This is a remarkable piece of art that perfectly fits this area. At night they light up. Overall the new Austin Proper is a great looking hotel inside and out, and perhaps will do a weekend staycation here after the virus air clears out. read more
