I've learned through the years. If you want your car fixed right? Look for an experience. Mechanic someone who's been around for a while... I've been extremely satisfied with the service...... I will never trust my vehicle with anybody else.... I had a few noises going on in the front of the vehicle and I had it at another mechanic prior to bringing it to H&R .I was charged over 1500 sway bar And control arm repairs And I was still hearing the noise. Had to bring it back there because they did the first repairs. Then they told me it was a transmission mount which is another 500 .... And I still heard the noise, i was done... I decided to bring it to Forest Park.. where they inspected the vehicle to see what the problem was. And it was my brakes and calipers.. so I do believe experience allows you to know what you're looking for in my opinion... read more

I will start by saying this is not a personal review of Larry as he was very nice along the way. But at the end of the day, this was an awful awful experience. If you care about your car, your time, and your money, DO NOT take your vehicle to H&R Auto and Towing. Their complete incompetence, dishonesty, and negligence have cost me months of frustration and thousands of dollars--and they have refused to take responsibility for their terrible work. Botched Repairs From Day One In June 2024, I hit an object on the highway, which destroyed my transmission and bent my subframe. My insurance covered the repairs, and I--unfortunately--trusted H&R Auto with the job. That was the biggest mistake I could have made. It took them three months to return my car. Immediately, issues started popping up, forcing me to bring the car back multiple times over the next three months to fix things they should have done correctly the first time. Instead of using quality parts, they cut corners at every opportunity, installing junkyard parts without properly inspecting or replacing necessary components. H&R's Negligence Leads to Catastrophic Failure In November 2024, my transfer case completely failed due to H&R's failure to properly install or replace the seals between it and the transmission. Fred's Garage, a well-respected and trustworthy shop, inspected the damage and confirmed that H&R either installed the seals incorrectly or didn't replace them at all. I had no choice but to take it back to H&R, and they claimed to have fixed it. But when I took my car back to Fred's for an inspection, they found a new transmission leak--meaning H&R STILL didn't do the job right. At this point, I could no longer trust H&R with my vehicle, so I paid $2,303.26 out of pocket to have Fred's Garage fix their mistakes. That's money I should never have had to spend if H&R had done their job properly. Refusal to Take Responsibility I sent H&R a formal demand letter requesting reimbursement for the money I had to spend due to their gross incompetence and negligence. They have ignored it. No response. If they respond in the next few days I will consider changing or removing this review. I am escalating this issue by: Filing a formal complaint with the Illinois Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division I may take legal action to recover my costs Making sure everyone knows how they operate by posting this review everywhere I can Do Yourself a Favor - GO ELSEWHERE There are plenty of reputable mechanics out there--H&R Auto and Towing is NOT one of them. I'm always slightly remiss to Yelp something. It means I found something good, worthy of writing about and sharing. But that means other people will glom onto it. C'est la vie, non? We have a Subaru Outback. It's great. But it's getting old. One day I parked in the city for a couple hours and when I started it again, it began to shimmy and shake and all the warning lights began to flash. I had five thoughts: A) this isn't good B) did someone steal my catalytic converter C) of course, I don't even know what that is D) or where E) this seriously can't be good Long story less complicated I googled a bunch of stuff it could have been, none of which I could do myself other than re-securing the gas cap (spoiler - that wasn't it). I called a popular auto repair place in Oak Park. It proved too popular. I wasn't going to get in anytime soon. Best case scenario was arriving early in the morning when they opened up and hoping I might get a call late in the afternoon. So I poked around Yelp and found H&R. I made an appointment for the next day. Next day I reminded Larry that I had a list of things from Google it could have been. "Hold on it," he said. "Let me check first, and then you can tell me." He ran a bunch of diagnostics and wrote down some codes. Then he put it into his computer and turned his chair to face me. "Wuddya got?" I read off my list. "Interesting," he said. "Sometimes Google is right on the money, so I want to know what you got. But it's this." He pointed to his screen and explained he'd have to get the part and that I should bring my car in the next day and that it would be done that afternoon. And true enough, that's what happened. The car no longer shimmied, shook, or flashed its warnings. A couple months later the air conditioning started making a weird noise, like an ocean sound. I called H&R. Larry said to just bring it in and he'd check it out. Once I got there the noise stopped. Classic. But Larry drove it around the block anyway. "If it happens again," he said. "Just drive it over." I guess my A/C fixed itself or it was the 'proximity effect', but I didn't need to go back. Which leads me to today... The brake light went out, which seemed like a simple enough thing to repair on my own. So this morning I picked up a bulb at O'Reilly. But I quickly understood that yes, maybe it was possible that I could fix it myself, but most likely I would lose my afternoon. And early evening. So I called H&R. "Just bring it over," said Larry. "And we'll have a look." I brought it over and 10 minutes later it was done. "How much," I said. "Don't worry about it." It might have been less than 10 minutes and I did bring my own bulb. But the fact remains, H&R know what they're doing. They're honest. They're thorough. They're dependable. They're fast. They're kind. They're good. They're worthy of Yelping about and getting folks to use them. I guess what I'm saying is that in the same way that I have a dentist and a doctor, I now have a mechanic. read more

I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this place at all. They had my car from January 24 though February 28th -- only cuz I demanded my car back since I needed it to travel to get my taxes done in Westmont the day after -- for a simple heat repair. $975 later and one vent getting hot speaks volumes about this shop's abilities. Had returned the car back twice within that time frame due to lack of heat/repairs, only with the same outcome. Highly disappointed. The one star was due to Larry being personable... but personable doesn't make for a good mechanic. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

These guys are LIARS and CON ARTISTS!!!! I took my car for an oil change and the VERY next day needed a new alternator!!! Seems pretty fishy if u ask me! So then my boyfriend takes the my car back to these crooks against my better judgment...they say i need a $1,700 heater core replacement. The DEALERSHIP who SPECIALIZES in this brand of automobile quoted $300 LESS! Long story short my heater core DOES NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED!!!! These crooks tried to get me for $1,700 when the problem was fixed by a mechanic whom I've known and trusted for 20 years (he is in my hometown 150mi away)...please be cautious when going to H&R Towing, I wouldn't trust these guys with my lawnmower let alone my car! read more

I had never used this local towing company until my car was in an accident in Forest Park. They towed the car to their lot and when it looked like it was going to be totaled by my insurance company drove me to their lot (offsite from their main location) and waited while I emptied my sweet car out of 13 years of clutter. The driver was "LA" and he could not have been nicer and more patient when I had to go back in twice! Then, after all of that I realized my mom's rosary was hanging on the mirror and "Tracy" said they'd go back and get it and I could pick it up after the weekend. This is a great company in Forest Park that many many peopel rely on for car repair. I have not gone there for that, but my daughter loves the place for her VW and Larry, the owner is very responsive and friendly. read more

The worst customer service experience I have ever had! My auto insurance company patched me through to these people, the man on the phone started out being friendly he said he didn't have anyone who could help me in my area. All I needed was a jack. He said that having someone come out was gonna cost me 85 bucks, I wasn't expecting such a heavy fee so I laughed because I can't afford that. My car's ignition was stripped in my tiny parking lot in a condo building with no ability to steer or put it in neutral not to mention I had two nice cars tight on both sides of me in the garage. I had one towing company called wells towing that was extremely unprofessional and looked at it and said they were unable. Then h and r came and tried everything in their power to get my car out. They were determined to get my car out despite the challenging circumstances. They were excellent in every way and I hope you call them if you are in need!!!!!!!!! read more

Rafael responded to my call for a tow in a very timely manner. He called and said he was running late, even though he made it in less than the hour we were estimated. When he got to my house, he asked me to turn my car on, and actually got my car running! He followed me to the mechanic and even gave me a ride home when he saw me walking back from the mechanic. I immediately called H&R to tell them how satisfied I was with their services. They were friendly, extremely helpful, and very prompt. I would recommend them to anyone. read more

NICK IS GOD SENT! I'm so upset with myself for just now realizing I have never written a review about HR towing and especially Nick. Let's flash back about a year ago: My husband, my two year old and I were going through the McDonald's parking lot on Madison when we hit that huge pothole that used to be there. When we hit it our ENTIRE tire came off, the joints, control arms basically the entire shebang. ( we used to drive a piece of crap car ) We called HR and they towed it to the shop down the street in a timely manner. Now going into that whole ordeal we knew the car was messed up. Nick being the great mechanic he is gave us the best price fixing the least the would make it run safe for in my opinion a good price. This is what we asked him for. He also gave us a list of everything we may want to fix in the future. We get the piece of crap car back and it ran great! Until we got rid of it. About three months ago: We brought our 07 Pontiac Gran Prix in because when we bought it the only issue we were aware of was that the main headlights do not work but the brights do. After coming up with our own temporary fix of Plasti dipping the lights white to dim the brights we finally brought it in to get fixed. After laughing at my husband for about 5 minutes (cause I mean it was pretty funny) he said he would see what was wrong no problem. Now this is after the previous owner had taken the car to MANY shops and they all could not figure out what was wrong! Nick got the lights to work no problem, affordable price and wipe the Plasti off. Two months ago: We were parked on Madison when my husband put in oil without a funnel ._____. Naturally some slipped causing our serpentine belt to slip off. We spent an hour with people trying to get it back on and when we failed we hazardously drove it to H R where Nick said he would put it on no problem! Not only that but it was free of charge. We have never had a good car repair shop before HR. This entire shop are honest hard working people who are straight forward. We do not have much experience in reasonable pricing but to us their prices are good! I know a lot of people complain about towing but sit in their lobby for ten minutes and you'll understand why it takes a long time! They get calls literally every three minutes. I will continue to recommend people to this repair shop. read more

I'm SOOOO disappointed in this place. They put a clutch in my car not even 2 years ago -- charged me $1200 -- that only lasted 9,000 miles! I took my car back in to them and they told me I'm hard on the clutch. Yeah right. I'm a 50-year-old woman who drives only to do errands on the weekend, not an 18-year-old hot rodder! They refused to take any responsibility, saying the warrantee was only for a year (now I know why). I told them they don't have any legal obligation to me, but as a consumer, I really cannot afford to pay $1200 every year for a new clutch, and I would think they would want to do right by me. (Nice try.) I don't know if they neglected to install a flywheel or if they installed a used clutch or just a clutch instead of the whole assembly.... the owner said he was "too busy" to talk to me and he'd call me when he could. That was two weeks ago. (Dude, it's winter and I have asthma; I need my car.) In the meantime, I found a great automotive place and the owner is trading with me: new clutch and flywheel installation for a web site (I'm a professional web developer). Awesome. Not only do I not have to pay to replace H&R's inferior work, but I get to help their competitor at the same time. Works for me. read more

Used as a repair shop - I found this shop through a friend after moving across country to town and finding out my clutch went out in transit. They were reassuring during a stressful time and completed the work on budget and with a great walkthrough to show me the damaged parts. I've since been back for a couple of other repairs and during a tire installation, they pointed out that two transmission lines were loose and leaking. They tightened them for me (for free) and recommended me to another shop to check the fluids (required a special dipstick they did not have). Its that kind of care beyond the work at hand that will keep me returning. read more

Unbelievable service! I work in Lincoln Park, but live in Elmhurst. My car would not start on Sunday night at work - lights and radio would turn on, but engine would not. I called the insurance company to set up a towing service for Monday morning. However, the garage at work has a very low clearance height: read 6 foot max. The first towing company was no good. Once they realized their truck wouldn't fit, they split fast. We called our insurance company back and explained to them the struggles of getting my car out of the garage. They called and sent over H&R. At first, they said it would be about an hour. Well, it took about three hours for them to get to my garage. Once they saw the low clearance, they said their truck wouldn't fit either. But, instead of leaving us stranded again, they came up with an alternative solution. They called over another car (Ford Escape) and chained my car to the back, put it in neutral, and muscled it up the 2 very steep ramps! I couldn't believe it! I honestly thought I was going to have to leave my car in my work's garage for an indefinite time period. They were very nice and kept ensuring me they would get my car out at any means necessary. Plus, living and working so far away from each other, I was dumbfounded by how little they charged! Definitely recommend this company to anyone who needs tow service! read more

Got my car towed here on Monday 5/11 around 7:30am. My insurance, Progressive, covered my tow and chose them because they were the closet, available place to me. My insurance followed up with me about the tow and I let them know about my bad experience with them.The dispatcher convinced me to come to their shop and sold me on their great customer service and he initially made me feel comfortable on the phone. I get there and it's another story. My car seemed to be overheating and after keeping my car for 6 hours they could not figure out why. I talked to a bunch of different people on the phone and they all said different things: one guy says there's nothing wrong, another guy claims my car hasn't been looked at yet, another says he doesn't know. I get back there to pick my car up, nothing has been fixed. They have no solution or nothing for me and charge me $48 basically for wasting my time. The next day my car is still having the same problems and overheating. H&R Auto wasted my day by keeping my car for hours and then they didn't have a clue what to do with it. I don't know what I was charged for because they did nothing. Won't ever be back. read more

Today, I got up, got in my car on my way to work and it did not start. After my insurance company connected me with H&R Auto, I was incredibly impressed with their professionalism and easy assistance. After doing their diagnostic, my car needed a new alternator and battery. They gave me a quote and the service was completed. Because I had driven my car to the shop, I was in need of a ride. The owner, Larry, immediately offered to drive me home and then when the service was done, he was back at my apartment to take me back to my car. Not only did I enjoy the conversation, it was just incredible, in this day, where customer service does not seem to exist anymore, for their entire staff to go so above and beyond. Worst Service I have Ever Received from a business! This place is terrible!!!! My vehicle was towed to their lot which is a back yard of a corner house. I was told I had to wait 45 mins for someone to open the gate and drive my car out. When the tow driver got there he went under my hood. I asked what they were doing and he closed the fence and told me to stay away from the gate. They told me I needed a jump...I drive a new car so I wanted to know why. Do NOT use this towing service!!! They are horrible and have damaged my car twice. If they damage your car they will not care and they will not pay. I do not know who they hire, but they seem to just get people off the street. The first time I called them to tow my car to a dealership because I needed my key replaced. When the car came off the truck the bumper was flexing a lot and there was a huge crack where the chain was. The owner Larry will deny, yell and hang up the phone... These people are trash. They caused 800 dollars in damage the first time. The second time they were attempted to illegally remove my unticketed car. I saw them hooking it up on the street and they just started. I asked the driver what he was doing and to remove the chains. He ran into his truck and floored it... You do not have to tow trucks for a living to know that this would work out. He ripped the bumper off my car and caused damage under the vehicle. He seriously was attempting to drag my car through the street!!! Ronald Heaver, the drivers name on the police report, must have been under the influence or terrible at lifting a car onto a truck which is probably his only job. This time it was $2000 worth of damage. They will wreck your car and not even apologize. So PLEASE avoid, there are many other companies that will be careful and if they do make a mistake they will take responsibility, that is why they have insurance. These people are the worst, and hire on whoever it seems. Anyways looking forward to my insurance company suing them, should be fun! read more
