I visited H&H with my son and daughter-in-law two days ago. Both my daughter-law and I noticed that every time we looked up, no matter what aisle we were in, the older salesman was always standing nearby watching us, obviously profiling us. My son, being preoccupied with shopping because this is his type of store, did not see this but when we told hm about it after we left we had to talk him out of returning the over $200 in merchandise he had just purchased because we knew how much he wanted these things. Cheated at H+H Outdoors I bought a pair of boots and pants for work as an Emergency Medical Technician. The boots hurt my feet and the pants were too large. I returned the items and asked for a refund. The owner refused and said that I was lying and and that I never returned the shoes and pants. The owner is not to be trusted. First I would like to say that love going to this store to get my work pants and boots. However I had the worst experience ever today. The manager/owner was very rude. He wouldn't listen to my question and kept cutting me off and yelling at my daughter and I. The other staff did apologize for his behavior and they were really nice and helped us. Also they sell shoes as is at prices that should be for new shoes. A pair of sale shoes that we wanted had two different sizes in the box. SERIOUSLY odd place. As to merchandise. There is pretty much everything there. Work clothes, camping, grilling, winter clothes amd more. Prices are good. You have to explore. But I echo the sentiments on what is the weirdest service Ive ever experienced! Strange greetings....you do kind of get followed around and monitored!!!! Strange!!! Really strange. I tried to make friendly comments and it turned into odd back and forth. I put a funny odd cammo coat on my kid and took a picture. No harm. It was like they thought i would take it. I see that this place gets low reviews but to be honest, I like a real grungy, divey kind of place. Unfortunately, this store didn't have any really good hardcore military surplus. They focus mostly on the clothing, which is not what I'm into. If you need some basic milsurp things like canteens, camos, boots, etc- you'll find it here. But not inert ordinance, high end knives, guns/ammo... But don't get me wrong, I like the huge, sprawling, mess of a place. read more

Service was horrible here, the manager/ owner was yelling at his employee the entire time, as well as yelled at me for looking at stuff he assumed was too too big for me, really think he has some trust issues or people steal a lot he really shouldn't talk to customers like that , I'll never go back. Instead of one star I'll give them two because they always have what I need whenever I go there. I hate the fact that they watch you and follow you around the store like you're gonna steal something. When I need help they give me an attitude like they don't want to help or as if people coming in is annoying them. Shit I can go into a Chinese owned store and not get followed around as if all black people are criminals. I've seen other black folks and Hispanic folk come in and get followed around like a vulture waiting for its prey to die. I have seen white people come in and get ignored like they have the plague so maybe they hate anyone who isn't working in the store. Let's start with i will not be going back. Within 5 minutes of being there I had one of the employees follow me around, everytime I looked up I could see him watching me. He kept talking to me, I had to tell him that I did not need any assistance. Seemed like every time I touched something he tried to sell it to me. Then I took an item up to the front to ask for a price check. The guy was sitting down eating, He couldn't even stop eating to really help me. I asked him how much, he said "isn't there a price tag on it". I said yes but I can't read the first number only the cents part. He told me the price is on the box where I got it. I told him the box is labeled for a product that this wasn't. The item was a jar, the box said Mason jars, this wasn't a major jar so I thought he was just reusing the box. Then he quoted me a price without getting up to look at the tag. I told him the price he said didn't match the cents part of the price that is readable. He was like ahhh, close enough. I asked him if he was just making up a price or what. He was like, the two prices are close to each other. That's not a good answer for me. The price is the price. Not close enough. He was also yelling across the store to talk to the employees, unprofessional. I guess thats why except for me and my son, the store was empty on a Saturday around 1pm. This was the first time I had been at H&H since they moved. Next time, I'll go to the Ranger surplus store, it will be worth the drive. I see this place not lasting 5 years, unless they start being more customer friendly. I didn't drive 35 minutes to be treated like I was bothering him, and then have him too busy eating to actually take 2 minutes to assist a customer. He was on his personal phone talking to his friend while starting to ring us up. We together spend around 150 in the store, not even a have a nice day. The only thing he said was credit or debit, and sign here. Not even a did you find everything your looking for, he didn't try at all. I am guess he is the owner, he seems like he would be the son of whoever started the business and now he runs it and acts like he is God there. When it fails he will scratch his head and Wonder how this family owned business didnt last, then he will find something to blame it on. Please read whole review!!!!! So I was always taught if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say it. But honestly I can't hold this in. This was the first time ever in store ever! I was in military and looking for camping stuff. I looked it up on the internet. Found this place. Needed change to pay the meter out front of there store. Was told I had to buy something to get change. I was like seriously. So I paid for parking via credit card. Came back in and started to shop. The older lady behind counter was on phone whole time and rude like I was bothering her or something she looked like she could be my Grandmom. I had a small ice coffee in my hand and got yelled at by some mid aged man. No drinks aloud in store! Put on counter @ first I wasn't sure if he was talking to me but he came up to me and tapped me on my shoulder, and try to take from my hands then repeated no drinks in store out on counter. I was like seriously? He claims there's a sign at front door which there wasn't! I said show me and he said he did not have to he is the owner. I even apologized to defuse it and the man remained a prick. Then my grandfather who was with me and had a few questions which this same guy (short fat guy) was ignorant with my grandfather he started screaming follow the arrows and would not answer any questions "follow the arrows" my grandfather was like ok. I said no. I don't know who your talking to like that, but it's not me and let alone my grandfather. These owners are rude and I am not sure what the hell their problem is but you don't talk to people like that especially when trying to buy things. This is our first time here and I dont appreciate this. The short fat guy was like I don't care if you don't like it then get out. I said gladly. We left! Went to another spot and spent over 700.00 worth of items. We wasn't there no more than 15 mins tops. A few other people were in store looked at him and us and they even walked out. I don't know how people stay in business like this. The place looked jammed pack with stuff and huge and really disorganized but never got the chance to actually shop or look around, I would of prolly spent hours and up to 1000 or more. It's a shame. I DONT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE I WOULD ADVOID THIS PLACE. I am giving this store a zero star but because I am reviewing it on yelp it's not allowing me to do so I have to give it something. Personally i have read some of the rating for here and they arnt really accurate as far as rudeness, the owners and employees were very friendly and helpful towards me and my three friends while we were there, each of us were looking for very specific things, as far as camping gear, airsoft and paintball uniforms and gear, ect. But theres always something different about everytime im there i loved it. The only thing that i was bothered there was im 5'9 and alot of thing i wanted to get ahold of where out of reach without help form the store owners, though they did help anyways so it worked out and the bayonets were kinda messed up... but it is surplus for a reason XD, its either too old for service or been phased out for a reason. read more

If you need anything for the outdoors, this is the place for you. They have EVERYTHING, from tents to duffel bags, hiking socks, boots, cookware, etc. They also have a ton of military stuff like ammo boxes and belt bags and uniforms. Very cool place to get lost in. read more

This place has everything (seriously EVERYTHING) from clothes to gear and the staff was very helpful. Their selection is so large (two stories), that you might worry if two hours is enough time on the parking meter. While I was there, I was using my phone to scan their products on Amazon to read the reviews. I'm former military so I've always liked H&H. They have a wide selection of military, security and camping supplies. Even a knife selection and name brand winter coats. It's not a flashy store, but well organized. If you are in the market for anything military related, chances are they have it. Employees do tend to follow you around but I'm sure they have a lot of theft issues. During my recent trip, I went in looking for an assault pack (back pack). They had the exact pack I was looking for but was priced at $89.99 which is more than it's sold from the PX, goverment supply sites and eBay. I also noticed a few brands of packs that I never heard of before. So I pulled out my phone and amazon sold the same exact packs for about 60-80% less than H&H. I guess the moral of the story is that there's certainly some good deals and bad deals. Might return if they revaluate their prices. read more

H&H! I worked there for over 10 years from 1985-95. And you know what. It hasn't changed since then. I went back in once after almost 20 years and everything was just as it was the day I left. I could have started working again after 20 years like I was never gone because everything was still in the exact same spot! Some of it WAS still in the same spot! I saw a lot of items on the wall with signs and tags I had put on them myself 20+ years previously!!! As noted customer service isn't their strong point although Clyde in the basement is a walking encyclopedia of camping gear. If you want selection this is the only place to go. I was looking to spend about 200$ there today, instead I didn't get anything after watching the miserable old man who runs the place berade his wife, and employees the entire time. This has generally been my experience with H&H, a like 60 year old school yard bully throwing a temper tantrum. It had been years since I last went into the store, for this very reason, and I'm pretty sure this will be the last time I ever try. Even the ups man who came to make a delivery was essentially "mam are you okay?" the lady behind the register. Used to love coming to this store and haven't been for a while, stopped in for work clothes, had several pairs of pants, shirts, hats, couple hundred worth of stuff, stopped to look at a body armor suit $300, the owner walks by and takes it out of my hands And says "this is not for trying on" so I asked if it was for sale, he asked If I knew what it was, and I said yes, used to wear one daily, he asked if I wanted to buy one, I said not anymore. First, these people work in a crappy old unairconditioned building that deals with some of B-mores finest...pretty sure their disfunctional attitude would b expected. But i dont find their customer service that out of line from other army surplus stores at all. They're typically a bit on the rude side. Just nature of the beast. If u cant except that than be prepared to have a bad experience. I love this place. Its want you want in a surplus store. Stuff in boxes everywhere, some untouched by time. Mostly Nam era stuff that accompanied the A.L.I.C.E pack system. They have newer M.O.L.L.E. stuff too but not as much selection. Alot of the camp stuff is seriously outdated. You could find cheaper on amazon. They have Knives, Boots, all kinds of clothes from military & quality outdoor, to good ole urban combat wear. Prices are not as cheap as they could be but these clothes are built to last if you play outdoors. Their prices are all over the place. That pretty much applies to the whole store. Some stuff is cheap...like 550 paracord for instance. 100' is 6.95, same cord on amazon cost 12.95. Thats a big difference. I also asked for a M16 field cleaning kit. I was shown the OLD nam era GI cleaning kit ($14 on Amazon) and the new M.O.L.L.E. GI issue kit that sells for $125+ on Craigslist...both were $25. GI issue Compression sacks...$10 vs. EMS $35. Oh how i wish they carried an updated supply of MRE's. They have some old inventory for $7.95. It is amazing how much stuff they have in one store...truly amazing. TERRIBLE. The owner is incredibly rude. Seconds after walking in, the owner told me to leave my backpack, but when I tried to ask him where to leave it, he started screaming "LEAVE YOUR BACKPACK! LEAVE YOUR BACKPACK!" until I just dropped it on the floor at my feet and started shopping. Just when I thought I had recovered from the initial shock of being yelled at, another customer came in, trying to up a friendly conversation with the owner, and was screamed at in the same way to leave his backpack. The man, obviously startled and confused by how quickly the owner lost his temper, tried to ask where to leave his backpack, but the owner started yelling at him to leave and trying to show him the door. I love this store. I go here just for fun. I get camping gear, hiking stuff, backpacking supplies, knives, and anything else I might be looking for. This place is big though so you need to put aside a whole day to go there and look. I get MREs here. Good prices and great selection. I've been here twice. I'm very impressed by the wide selection of military surplus and outdoor merchandise. This is probably the best surplus place in the Baltimore area. I haven't had any arguments with the staff like some other Yelpers, but yes, they don't seem like the most social or well-adjusted group of people. As you would expect from a place like this, the people who work there are all crusty old guys. And yes, it is in a bad part of town, but you can find street parking within 1 block of the store. read more
