If you buy a pair of shoes/boots make sure they fit PERFECTLY, because once you leave the store, they won't exchange or refund your money unless the problem you're having with the shoe is a mfg. issue. I spent $145 on Oboz shoes. The shoes felt fine in the store but after wearing them for a week I was having too much rubbing/friction below my ankle bone. I brought them back to the store hoping to exchange them for another model but all they did was stretch the shoe, which made no difference , and sent me on my way. I contacted Oboz but since I purchased the shoes at a retail store they or unable to help. They suggested going back to Trail House. read more

I bought a pair of Keen hiking shoes from the Trail House and within a year both shoes tore at the insoles. The Trail House refused to replace or provide a partial refund for the shoes. I do not believe that a $200 pair of shoes used lightly to moderately should begin falling apart within one year, but apparently The Trail House believes this is perfectly fine. read more

This is a well-stocked store with great brands such as North Face and Patagonia. I shopped here on Christmas Eve about an Hour before they closed and they staff was SO NICE. A really nice girl really took the time to help me find a nice outfit for my boyfriend and helped me think through the pieces, sizing and all. And he ended up loving it! We needed to use a gift card that we had been given to use in downtown Fredrick stores. So we decided to check out the trail house. The service was excellent and the staff were very knowledgeable. We were able to find several items that we could not pass up. The prices are a tad higher than you might find online but it is worth it to support a local business. Honestly I can't speak too much to the selection nor pricing of The Trail House. I went in with a mission and the staff was more than helpful. I needed a pair of socks that I could wear in my ultimate cleats while playing in snow for hours. The staff was quite helpful in describing their different options, and I ended up going home with some PhD Smartwool socks. The prices on those was the same as Amazon's, which to me is always the gold seal of approval on pricing. The base of my experience though was the customer service. We had one goal so that is what I'm rating Trail House on: getting a pair of Vibrams. My husband's foot fell between sizes so he was given a pair of each size and (after running through the store) he figured he liked the smaller size. Then he had to find the right style... Then laces or straps? Through it all, the salesperson was super nice: no pressure, just guidance. When we went to pay she told the cashier to take 10% off since all Vibrams were going on sale in 2 days: SWEET! AND they have Injinis (toe socks) for those who don't like nekkid feet. (Side note: unless you are reordering a pair you already have, don't try to order Vibrams online. You really need to test them out and make sure you have a glove-like fit. Frederick's independent hiking/outdoor store. Like a small version of REI or HTO without having to leave downtown Frederick and travel south. Shoes, clothes, gear, maps, etc. Staff is always friendly and while the volume of merchandise may not be huge, they are carefully selected to cover most of your needs. I usually find what I'm looking for and like that I can support a good local business and not have to drive 30 miles for my gear. The store is well organized and not overstuffed (if you've visited HTO in Gaithersburg you know what I mean). read more

I try to hit the Trail House whenever I'm in downtown Frederick, and I always enjoy it. I can't say I'm a great customer as I'm usually not shopping for anything specific. They jam a lot of items into a small space, and offer a wide selection at that. Sure, the prices are a bit more than you could find online but supporting local merchants is well worth it. Plus, there are deals to be found there. They had a sale on Smart Wool skiing socks which I almost bought for my sister and brother-in-law for Christmas (despite it being July), but they didn't have the correct size. I couldn't imagine Frederick without the Trail House, and look forward to my next visit. read more

I just LOVE this store and have purchased shorts, skorts, pants, and a rain jacket for myself. They are perfect for the golf course! I also shop for my daughter who is a rock climber and hiker...purchasing shoes, socks, sandals, clothing, and sunglasses (mine are prescription). I love the Trail House. Every time I go to Frederick I make it a point to shop there instead of the REI in Rockville. The staff are very friendly and thoughtful and I find that they have great sales -- things that never go on sale at REI, you can sometimes find at the Trail House significantly discounted, especially towards the end of the season. I prefer the 'mom and pop' feel of the store and the employees are knowledgeable and helpful. read more

The Trail House has everything the serious outdoor hiker, kayaker, climber and/or camper needs. Locally owned, the staff is warm and accommodating. I don't live right in Frederick and therefore I rather get information on their products in a different way... I was looking to buy some shoes and a down jacket. Went to their website and the whole thing gave me a headache. It was literally impossible to find any products. I decided then to call. A young guy answered and the service he provided me was so poor that I decided to just say thanks, goodbye and try the website one more time. Needless to say, it was useless... So I ended up calling patagonia and timberland and they helped me in such a way that the Trail House should learn from them.... Normally I don't write reviews but given what happened to be at Trail House (Main Street Frederick, MD)I felt that they earned it. My son is getting into backpacking for the scouts and after our first 15 mile trek we discovered his boots were WAY too small and badly needed immediate replacement. The plan was to go to sports authority with our 15% coupon in hand for a pair that would last 6 months or so and then go to REI for a good pair for our big 50-80 mile trek next year. They had nothing that we really considered suitable so we ended up at Trail House. The woman who helped my son fell out of time. NO ONE has customer service like this for footwear anymore and hasn't in 20 years. She sat him down and actually sized him (when was the last time someone pulled out a sizer for you?). She started pulling out boxes and boxes trying different styles and sizes. When she started self-tasking saying things like "Hmmm, that is close, but I really want to see 1/2 size bigger on you, wait right here" I knew that she was not going to let him leave unless he had the RIGHT pair of boots. At the end of the day we walked out of there with a pair of boots and I felt good giving them my business. I bought a pair of boots at REI just a few weeks back and didn't get nearly this kind of attention. Add to it that the boots I bought are too narrow for me (the guy didn't tell me that they make a wide version even after I mentioned my concern with width, so there is likely an exchange in the near future) I am a big REI fan and I don't mean for this review to diminish anyone's opinion of REI but after my experience this weekend, Trail House has certainly caught my attention as a viable local source to consider when I am in the market. read more

Love this store. I go out of my way to shop here. I think REI's great, but I like Trail House more. This store has a little bit of everything for playing and being outside. I go here mostly for backpacking gear. I think their prices, while not cheap, are on par with other retailers. read more
