My wife and I visited Gyros & Kabobs (G&K) for dinner this past week. We entered the service queue and were promptly greeted by a youngster manning the register and front counter. He was friendly and polite, and when we mentioned our visit as being our first time, he happily explained the happily explained the menu and offered to answer any questions we might have. We both decided to order à la carte. So, my wife ordered two Beef Kabobs (identified on the menu simply as "Shish" Kabob), a Chicken Kabob, and sliced Gyro Meat. I also ordered the sliced Gyro , but to try a variety of menu Items, I ordered the five Chicken Wings, with "Red Hot" flavoring. We both also ordered a side salad, which comes served only with a "House" dressing (somewhat like Italian vinaigrette). We wanted to order an iced tea, but learned they do not serve iced tea. Also, as we perused the menu trying to decide on what to order, my wife noticed on one of the pictured food plates, what appeared to be a salad of sorts. When we asked what type of salad, we were politely told that the salad pictured is not something we can order because they don't actually have that Item. Well, fiddlesticks! After ordering, we took our number and went to the Self-Serve soda fountain for drinks... no iced tea. :( The restaurant serves Pepsi® products, with Dr.Pepper as one of the choices on the fountain drink machine. Sadly, there was no Dr. Pepper and that option was marked, "Out of Order." We settled on diet Pepsi, the ONLY diet option, besides H2o. While waiting on our meal, we noticed the restaurant to be clean and well kept. We also noticed our napkin dispenser to be empty. Not a problem, I just exchanged it for a fuller one on an adjacent table! Interestingly, this place has the absolute lonnngessst straws of anyplace I've ever been. One could nearly put one's own eye out with these straws (SEE PIC)! Inside the restaurant, there are two, 40ish-inch TVs hung in opposite corners; one by the entrance door. One was tuned to a basketball game, the other was turned off. Our food arrived on styrofoam plates and in a paper lined basket. No frills whatsoever! Not even iced tea! :( Anyways... our food arrived fresh and hot! And after tasting our food, we came to realize that this particular Gyros & Kabobs is neither Greek, Lebanese, or Turkish. We did not ask or seek to learn from what region of the Middle East the food takes its flavors, rather we concluded what we did, because we love kabobs, etc. and have tasted a lot of food originating in Greece, Lebanon, and Turkey, and the flavors of this food (not counting the gyros), to us, did not taste similar. Please don't misunderstand, the food was hot, it was fresh tasting (not counting the gyros), and it was full of flavor! We were just not too keen on the flavor we were tasting. If that makes sense... And, as for the gyros, to us, it tasted as though it was from the frozen food section; very lackluster. Also, the "dipping" sauce, if you will, what G&K calls Chutney, left a lot to be desired! As for the Kabobs themselves, they were moist and tender. In fact, the Beef Kabobs appeared to me, to possibly be made from a pot roast type cut of meat, given that it seemed to shred as does pot roast. Just speculation on my part, but something you might consider! As for my Hot Wings, they were different in their flavor profile as well. I liked them, but because no Ranch or Bleu Cheese dressing, I was left wanting. My fault, because I knew that going in! The Men's Room at this restaurant was clean and well stocked. I think the absolute most positive note I can end on here is that, if you're open to trying "new" flavors, want (mostly fresh?) hot food and, want good value for your money, you should give Gyros & Kabobs a try. First off, yum. Second, yum! Third, YUM! There are very few restaurants that I have cravings for, but this is definitely one of them. The chicken shawarma is just amazing, and the rice and sauces they include are just plain addicting. The quality of the food is exceptional and, being halal, that is to be expected, but even beyond that, they use just the right amount of seasoning to enhance the food. The service is fine, and I have always been greeted with a smile. The ambience is adequate for what it is.
