Dolma were eh. It was served w an ample amount of pita. Kebabs: we got the curry chicken because they ran out of Turkish chicken, and the kubide. Portion of the salad (we got tabbouleh) was small. The chicken was really good... cooked well and good flavor. Kubide was eh. Not much flavor. We tried their hot sauce and it tasted like thicker tapatio. We ordered the Turkish chicken kebab plate, Kubide kebab plate, falafel side, and the sampler platter. Sampler platter: 8/10. Everything on the plate except the eggplant borani was pretty good. Falafel side: 8/10. The outside was crispy, but slightly burnt. Chicken & Kubide kebab plates: 6/10. The meats were pretty dry. Both the meat and the rice of both dishes were tasteless and the garlic sauce on the side didn't have much taste either. It would have been better if it was more garlicky and not watered down. Ambiance & parking: There is only limited street parking available. The restaurant is pretty small with a cozy cafe vibe. We had dinner here tonight. Strange atmosphere, older house turned into a restaurant with fake flowers everywhere. It is cold inside, but they have heaters. The patio was cute, but freezing so we picked a table inside. Ordered the appetizer sampler, the hummus tasted like it was from a jar- not homemade at all. The pita was probably the worst I have ever had. . For our main, we had the combo dinner- the steak kabobs were really good, the chicken was fine- nothing to write home about. We added the tabbouleh salad which was good. For dessert I ordered mint tea (they brought cardamon tea) and my boyfriend ordered Turkish coffee. We shared baklava for dessert- it wasn't recognizable- there was no filo dough, nothing flaky- I couldn't even eat it. There were a couple people there Instagram videoing- that had their meal comped. I wondering if that is how they have such high reviews because the food and service were not good. After we finished our meal, my BF had to ask them to clear the plates when they brought our dessert. When I saw "double" beef I thought I was getting an extra skewer, but it just means that the other skewer gets converted from chicken to meat. lol The outside patio is quant, but it can get a little chilly and windy depending on the time of day. We recently discover Gypsy's Persian grill in Long Beach. We started with the Hummus (chickpeas mixed with tahini, garlic, lemon juice and olive oil) served with pita bread. It was fresh and delicious! For my entree I chose a traditional plate, Kubide kebabs which are skewers of finely minced beef marinated in savory spices, comes with saffron basmati rice and salad. The kebabs were seasoned and cooked perfectly and saffron rice was fluffy and prepared well. The server was attentive and overall ambiance was cozy and intimate. Delicious and very well priced. Beef is extremely moist and tender and chicken is perfectly seasoned. All the sides are great too - hummus, tzatziki, dolma. The Nevik is also a standout. The day I discovered this amazing, nearly hidden, establishment I was doing beach stairs repeats between Alamitos Ave and Coronado, where the car was parked. I had been utilizing Ocean Blvd and the Shoreline Way Bike Path and decided to walk to and out on the pier once done for the day. Well, on the way back, with my walking partner of the day being my fiancee, something told me that we needed to walk up 39th to Ocean rather than return on the bike path... and boy am I glad we did. I spotted "Persian" in the signage and I knew that I wanted to look at the menu because Persian food usually agrees greatly with my pallate. Fortunately, the menu was posted near the doorway, so I had a quick look. A gentleman of Gypsy's employ tended to us and both seat us presented us with menus. This man's name was Ricardo and he was the perfect server. Just a few minutes of interactions and I immediately knew this would be a good experience. How right I was... the entire experience was purely flawless. The food was both flavorful and affordable and Ricardo's knowledge of the menu made it so we could allow him to sculpt our order based on describing things we liked. The gentle breeze and our workout efforts had us slowly relaxing and maybe even longing for a nap. Then the food came out... I ordered the ever so delicious chicken kebob meal and what was nice was that they substituted my rice for tabouli salad. Falafel was the other meal on the table... and I heard no complaints about it. Closing note... I really want to head back to this place soon... Hmm... Gypsy's was recommended to me by a co-worker who also lives in Long Beach. We were able to find street parking nearby for lunch on a Wednesday. The restaurant is small but quaint. Service was excellent throughout the meal. We ended up sitting outside in the beautiful hidden back courtyard tables. We ordered a sampler appetizer plate to start, which came with warm pita and a collection of three dips + dolmes (stuffed grape leaves). The eggplant was the most flavorful. We ordered two plates, one of curry chicken and one of kubide (ground beef). The meat was juicy and flavorful. I added barberries to my rice for $1.75, and we both added a roasted tomato for $0.50 each. I was a tiny bit annoyed that you only get half a tomato when you are already paying extra for something that often comes standard/included with kabab plates at other places, but at least the tomato was tasty. The rice was okay, but I am not sure it used real high-quality saffron. The rice was not served with sumac or butter. The plates did come with white garlic sauce, which was a pleasant surprise. Food overall was good and service fantastic, though I have had better Persian food for the price. However, I acknowledge that rent is high in this area so I still recommend Gypsy's for tasty Mediterranean food in a cute area. P.S. We arrived here at 8 PM on a Friday night. Overall I only give this place three stars for the outdoor area and the location. It's right next to Belmont brewing. I would have to say the service here was pretty poor. The server had attitude, and was in a rush to close down the place. They didn't let us eat in peace, and she would constantly bring the check out. In addition, when we asked her recommendations for what to get she did not take time to explain the menu items or present the restaurant well. The food itself was not authentic Persian food. It had more of a Mediterranean vibe and was not as fresh or flavorful as it could be. The two dishes I do recommend is the eggplant borani dip and the mahiche: lamb shank, both of them had good spice and authentic flavor. read more
