The tamales were 6 for $40 ($7 for one) with a choice of three kinds. I wish the mole ones were offered but I'll have to get them another time. Duck mole tamales! The tamales were moist and soft (but not mushy). The layer of masa was thin and there was plenty of well-seasoned meat. The meat wasn't dry either. And the tamales came with various toppings (cheese, salsa, crema). You could tell that the tamales were made with love. They're also free of pork lard. The woman behind the pop-up, Yunia Fumes Mata, works at Bestia, one of the best restaurants in LA.

This review is for the Paramount location. I got a few items: Dino rib, pork ribs, brisket, sausage, mac and cheese and corn bread. I'll start with the positives. The mac and cheese and corn bread were decent. Also they took 15 minutes to give me all the varied food I ordered which should have been my red flag to run, but I decided to live dangerously and was punished severely for it. Now on to the travesty, the meat. The theme for today was dry, old and shameless. The pork was somehow undercooked and dry. Which if you can endure the cruelty, is actually kind of impressive. The brisket resembled beef jerky. I'm including pictures of the brisket since those speak much more eloquently than I can. I love to cook and I infamously over season my dishes. But all these meats were at a whole another level. Not salty but aggressively peppery and just ham handed. The rub was flavorful but it blew out my palette instantly. Please take this to heart: less is more. In terms of meat quality? Cheap. My Dad is a butcher, I can tell. Everything being reheated did the meat quality no favors either. The seasoning was further exacerbated because the ribs, both dino and pork, were almost entirely bone. So you have a ton of seasoning on a lick of meat. It was a recipe for disaster. And price? Expensive, especially for what I received. Insulting for what I received. I'll end it here. I don't want to waste your time like this place wasted mine.

I have been *quite* delinquent at keeping up with converting review drafts to actual reviews - but…read moreI feel especially bad seeing this one un-posted still, given it was just in the local news last week, they're putting their popup on temporary-but-indefinite pause because it wasn't getting enough business... hopefully they do reopen, ideally in a proper space, because their bbq is *great*. I hadn't ever been to their now-closed official popup location, but after having heard how great they were for the previous year, I finally had a chance to try them over the summer, at the Beachwood anniversary event. I loved that I was able to buy meat in quarter-pound increments, so I could try two of my favorite bbq meats, brisket and pulled pork. The pulled pork was great; the brisket was probably the best brisket I've had from a bbq place in Long Beach (it's still not Franklin, but *nothing* is Franklin). I also tried their mac & cheese - they only had one size, for $8, but that size was *large*. The mac & cheese was also great. Seriously friendly people, too, so I really hope they succeed in their quest for a brick-and-mortar spot. (And that the quality is as good once they do, both so I don't have to give them a worse review later, and because I would like to have that brisket again! And because they're great people and they deserve to succeed, of course.)

For reference, the last time I had a dino rib was at the infamous Heritage BBQ San Juan Capistrano, and this slightly edges it out. The rib was absolutely delicious with that olive oil dressing, and I also settled on the brisket and candied pork belly, and they all were tender and packed with smoky, savory and sweet flavor. The brisket needed no knife or fork to separate. I had no issue with the pricing because they proudly serve prime cuts, and you can taste the difference in the marbling to the typical choice cut. The wait was quick, and the staff packed everything so neatly--you can tell they work as a family, if not a close-knit team. I've read much about the owners, and it's great to support a business that re-invests into the community like they do.
