Gypsy Cafe & Restaurant - Return Visit (Sunday, July 26) My wife and I returned to Gypsy Cafe today and ordered the Hủ Tiếu Nam Vang, which is the main reason we stop by once in a while. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. The restaurant now charges $1.00 for tap water, which came as a surprise. The bowl is still the same size, but there are noticeably fewer noodles than before. What made the visit even less enjoyable was that the air conditioning was not turned on. We were eating a hot bowl of soup while warm air was blowing in from the open entrance. The outdoor temperature was only 82°F, but the dining room felt hot and uncomfortable. In my opinion, this restaurant has become more of a place where older people gather to socialize than a place you would go for a comfortable dining experience. The Hủ Tiếu Nam Vang is still better than what we've had at several other restaurants, but the overall experience has definitely declined. TLDR; waited over 50 minutes for mediocre food, lukewarm tea I would say the food is good if it came out in the expected 15 minutes it should have taken. I know Vietnamese places aren't the best known for their service, but this was unacceptably bad. We had ordered a pot of tea to share at the table and it was lukewarm each time, having us wait longer hoping the tea would seep in flavor. We waited over 50 minutes noting that 3/5 of our dishes were soup based so they should had been already made. Bo Kho (2/5) - standard bo kho, tender meat, normal store bought baguette Bun Bo Hue (0/5) - the oiliest bun bo hue that has ever been served to me and I felt I could fry something in that oil Nui Bo Luc Lac (3/5) - everything was actually well cooked and if this came out say less than 20 minutes I'd order it again Banh Mi Chao (3/5) - standard, nothing to write home about it's what you expect Hu Tieu Nam Vang (4/5) - soup was nice and vegetables were freshly served This is more of a place for the uncles to drink coffee and smoke cigarettes outside like in Vietnam. Definitely not a place if you're in a rush. If you mind smoke I wouldn't eat here but the vibes are nice if you do like the Vietnamese uncle chopping it up and yelling random things outside. I personally like it and will probably age towards that direction some day. read more

Number 1 Hủ tiếu Nam Vang in OC! It's so delicious. The rice noodles not too mushy, still have the good texture. Full of toppings: shrimps, sliced pork, ground pork, quail eggs. It's come with fresh veggies and a small soup bowl. Good portion size. read more

Reasonably priced for breakfast as it is a pretty small portion. the service is a little slow but it's a Vietnamese place so we don't expect service. Outdoor seating is a smoking den - second hand smoke is dangerously here. they do reservations for tables but don't seem to take a deposit as no one shows up while others are waiting and completing their meals. read more

Quick and easy to order. Customer service is on fleek. It's my go to for hủ tiếu when I have my crazing. It's in the back of a shopping center where all the old ex Vietnam vets hang out and gossip. The food is fresh and full of toppings. It's not a full blown restaurant but it has just enough of the traditional viet breakfast with tasty flavors. Highly recommended if you want low key Vietnamese breakfast. read more

My parents have been telling me about this place for awhile. They are big fan of Hu Tieu Nam Vang and other hu tieu dishes. Finally took them here and I was not disappointed. The vibes are very old school cafe shop where Vietnamese men come to play chess, drink their coffee, and discuss Vietnam War or other life problems lol. The place is airy and open. The staff are professional. There's indoor and outdoor seating. One only draw back is that they allow smoking outside and since windows and doors are open, the smell of cigarettes are pervasive. I have been to this restaurant before and didn't care much but recently I came again and the service and the food was so different. I asked and no wonder it's has change their owner. The service was excellent and the foods were yummy and the tastes were so different. Talking about the service, they were busy but always come and checked to see if everything was ok and clean your table during your meal. Last week I came again and luckily this time I met the new owners and talked with them a little and knowing that they put their hearts and souls into this restaurant, no wonder the foods were so different and yummy this time. It was a nice surprise to find the good rice noodle soup Cambodian style here at a crowded coffee shop! Parking is usually challenging but you will get one in a short while! I went there to see friends for a chat since at least 10 years ago but never had this wonderful soup. Must be a new owner who acquired the shop next door to make her double sized cafeteria?! While there's no attempt in making the place beautiful, the space, the relatively clean place creates a fresh environment to eat your lunch! Here is the star: the broth is hot as foodies expected, not too salty neither too sweet (too much sugar). The protein department is full with goodies namely slices of liver, heart,...quails egg! I walked away from my emptied bowl with sweat perspired on my face- signs of ultimate satisfaction! Will come back soon! read more

They have a menu of varieties and we tried a little bit of everything. EVERYTHING IS A MUST TRY. We got hu tieu nam vang dac biet, banh mi bo kho, hu tieu bo kho, banh mi gypsy (Vietnamese breakfast with eggs, pate, butter, pork with bread to dip. This place serves bomb Vietnamese and French fusion. You can make your own banh mi as well. This place is usually popular for old Vietnamese men who chill and watch people walk around lol. The tables don't look the best and a bit dirty. However, the food makes it up. I believe it's a family owned restaurant so the workers are very friendly and informative on which food is good. read more

A very nice and relaxing little place. You can sit outside by the patio or stay inside and sit on the sofa. Smoking section is outside so non smokers like me can enjoy the drinks without the danger of becoming second hand smoker =) There are magazines you can read at the table and 2 flat screen TVs mounted to the walls. The menu was pretty simple...coffee drinks, teas, juices, smoothies and other fruit drinks. I heard their coffee was pretty good and fresh. My drink was very good and refreshing. I was tired and a little stressed out when I went there. It's nice to relax and unwind your mind for a while. I definitely felt much better and happier when I walked out. Enjoy your favorite traditional South Vietnamese breakfast and the Porkbone noodle soup is fantastic. The ladies are wonderful and full of enthusiasm for the game but make sure to tip them. We know the cheap ass that don't even leave a dollar. Don't bring your own food drinks or tea here because it's a business not your backyard. I came here because I love places with macaroni noodles and beef (filet mignon) so I had to try this place out. It was pretty good. The beef was really tender and had a nice flavor to it. After a long night of drinking, hungover completely shitfaced and not being able to sleep a buddy of mine decided he wanted some coffee and cigarettes. So i figure why not it's better then laying around tossing and turning ya know? After much contemplating which vietnamese coffee shop to go to we both decided gypsy cafe would suffice because it had plenty of outdoor seating, which is good if your a smoker....don't judge me. Anyway, my friends and I decided to order the cafe sua nong, which is hot coffee with milk and it was really good! It's got enough creaminess with more of a coffee flavor. Id say it was 60% coffee to 40% milk in terms of the coffee to milk flavor ratio. And if you smoke, PLENTY of outdoor seating. I also treated myself to some of their passion fruit juice which was delightful as well. My friend ordered the gypsy plate which is like a combination plate. It came with 2 sunny side up eggs, a package of butter, soy sauce, 3 pieces of cha lua, 3 pieces of this ham (i don't know what its called), 4 smokey sausages, 2 slices of tomato, 2 slices of cucumber, a small serving of pate, and a basket of baguettes. You've got your carbs, proteins, and veggies for pretty damn cheap too! It's the traditional vietnamese breakfast but deluxe status. It's a nice place to meet up with your friends to start your day. Just be careful though, I told them that it was on me but when the waitress came she said the two dreadful words, "CASH ONLY." In this scenario, I then had to ask them to spot me. I visit here and there because I really like two dishes they have. Food: (4.5/5) I rated this 5/5 because their food is very consistent and keeps me coming back. It's no Michelin star place, but it's good! And authentic. Gypsy platter: (4/5) A good breakfast dish. My favorite part are the small sausages..... So good. The baguettes that come with this are pretty fresh too. This platter is your standard cold cut platter with a few eggs and other touches. A solid breakfast. Filet Mignon Macaroni: (5/5) This is probably not what it's called, but this is what it is. SO GOOD. The meat is very tender and the taste is very apparent. The macaroni is also perfectly cooked and has a small grilled look to them, it holds a lot of the flavor inside each noodle. Yeah yeah. You get it. This dish is a must try. Environment/Service: (4/5) It's cute how the furniture is mismatched. The service is pretty standard for a Vietnamese place. Not SUPER clean, not DIRTY. Just alright. read more

After a day at the beach, hubby and I decided to eat at Gypsy Cafe. It was a nice day so we sat outside. The tables were small and dirty. I ordered the beef and macaroni. Hubby ordered mi nam vang. His noodle was only ok. It was lacking in flavor. My beef macaroni was decent. The beef was tender. The star of the meal was the tea. It was bold and very fragrant. Service was lacking as well. The young waitress was not friendly. She didn't seem happy to be there. After serving us the pot of tea and cups she didn't say a word and left immediately. 5 stars due to the fact that I believe they have the best Hieu Tieu Nam Vang compared to anywhere else. I don't eat here and always order take out so I can't comment on anything besides the food, but wow, seriously underrated. I didn't even know about this place until my parents (both Vietnamese) brought this dish home one day and it easily became my favorite of its kind. They often sell out towards the end of the day because they only make a set amount. The Nam Vang style is different than the standard Hieu Tieu or noodle/soup dishes because the broth is meant to be kept separately for the entire meal. They use pork bones to enhance the flavor of the broth and each order actually comes with a bone marrow in the soup. It's a pretty large order and can be saved to eat later. The name of the place is deceiving and I wouldn't have thought to find the best Hieu Tieu here!! read more

I tried their Hu Tieu Nam Vang today, 2 bowls cost around $25 totally insane for what they serve. They gave very small portion of noodle and very little meat. The taste is normal and nothing special, and It took 30mins for 2 bowls. Please do yourself a favor and stay away from this place. read more
