Guthries is the best place to visit on a the nights when you want to be social but not have to venture too far into Wrigleyville. This place caters to people that love to drink and play board games. They have a whole bookcase that is packed with the common popular games. I do have to mention that the games are very worn due to the overuse and sometimes are missing parts. This is a great place to gather with a group of friends. I would recommend getting there a little early if you planned on getting a table so you can play the games. The drinks are all reasonably priced and delicious. They offer bar food but they allow you to bring your own food or have it delivered. I've seen people get pizza delivered to a man walking through the bar selling tacos. I loved my visit and can't wait to go back! I can see this place quickly becoming one of my go too places on the nights I don't want to dance the night away. read more

This corner bar was real neat, it was packed on a Saturday night and all the tables were filled with people playing all different types of board games, card games, etc. We had to wait at the bar for a table to open up to play a game but nonetheless a great place to be. The board game options were endless, although some of the games were missing pieces or cards (one of the Sorry board game didn't have the cards and the game Clue didn't have the paper that was needed to play the game) so that was a bummer. Awesome - my friend and I went here on a Saturday night after an improv show near Belmont and we wanted a low key place to hang out for a few hours. She had been there a bunch of times, but it was my first and I really liked it! Here's why: 1) Saturday night at 9am wasn't too crowded - we got a table easily. 2) They have a GREAT beer selection - we tried a couple, and I was especially excited that they had Murphy's Stout on special! 3) BOARD GAMES of course!!! What an awesome way to spend an evening. 4) We didn't do this, but they let you order in food! 5) The waitress was great - we were there for about 3 hours and only had two drinks each, but she didn't make us feel like we were taking up space or anything. In sum, I'll definitely be going here again - it's pretty far from me, but I wish I lived closer to it and I'd be there very often! As it is, I'll definitely make a point to go back soon. Since I don't drink alcohol, I really appreciate a place that has a delicious non-alcoholic option for someone who just needs a place to hang out and play games. I feel a little guilty that I don't spend more while here, but I try to give a really nice tip to make up for it. Their game library is a bit limited, especially because I consider myself a game fanatic, but it is still an excellent option for a small, casual group of friends to hang out, play games and, in ordinary circumstances, drink. The prices are reasonable, ranging from $5-7 and it seems they have a rather extensive selection, which is nice even though I don't partake. They have a very limited food selection, just simple bar appetizers, but they encourage bringing in food from nearby eateries. All in all, I appreciate this place and think it is an interesting destination, especially if you're already in the neighborhood. Guthrie's is great. Board games and beer. Great for a lazy Sunday afternoon or a Friday night with friends. Very casual, laid back atmosphere with board games for free. Given they're free, probably expect a couple missing pieces but nothing you can't figure out on your own. The board game selection is pretty good I think, plenty of your typical social games - yahtzee, sorry, life, apples to apples, etc. The beer menu is pretty good as well. I was definitely expecting plenty of light beers and plain old pilsners, but there's more. Got a couple good German beers there in the past. I would not recommend the food. I haven't eaten there, but friends have an none report it as anything worth eating. But you're probably not there to eat anyway. Guthrie's a a good time by all. read more

I left within the same minute I walked in. There was no "bouncer" upon entering, I had never been there so I didn't think twice. In the middle of the bar, he rudely stopped me and hissed that I should have had my ID already out and ready to go? When I said I didn't know there was even a bouncer, he proceeded to harshly tell me that everyone else had figured it out and he can go wherever he wants, whenever he wants. Maybe if he was doing his job by tending to the front door and checking IDs before entry, I would have had my ID ready to go. I love the vibe of this place! Not too crazy, but not too low-key, it has a great energy. The owners are ok with BYOF, so we ordered our own pizza from Pequod's Pizzeria and enjoyed it while I tried a stout from their menu. There are stacks of board games on a book shelf in the corner for anyone to play, and what was really fun the fact that people were actually playing! It genuinely seemed like everyone felt comfortable doing whatever they wanted, whether that was reminiscing with friends around a table, playing board games in a corner, or standing at the bar and yakking it up with each other. Crowded, dark spaces where you have to yell at each other to be heard are not my pint of beer, but if I lived in Chicago, I would certainly make it a point to frequent Guthrie's with my friends. read more

Three of us Funksters stopped in for a nightcap after a late meal on a Friday evening. 11pm and the joint is full. Bar Gods countenance shines upon us as three patrons leave their bar stools just as we walk in. Bartend is johnny on the spot with a more than adequate beer & drink list. No kitchen to speak of but you can carry in or order out. The conversations are boisterous and many. Board games are available, selected and put in play. Came here on a date. Was listed as a good place for a first date on some website. I was impressed with their beer list...it was pretty decent. However, they do not serve any real food here...but you can have food delivered there. The price for drinks was reasonable. I did notice they had a wall of games available there to play and my date did mention he had been there before for a nerd night which did sound somewhat fun. The place was quiet when we got there but it quickly got busy. I would probably come back except it is kinda far away from where I live and the date did not go as well as expected...wouldn't want to bump into him again would we. Came here on a Saturday night with my boyfriend and the atmosphere was great! They had ample indoor and outdoor seating. The inside was decorated very cute, and the patio was nice as well. They had an extensive beer list, and had a server going around to the tables, so we did not have to keep getting up to go to the bar, which was a nice touch. The staff and all the patrons were very friendly, and everything was reasonably priced. It got busier as the night progressed and the vibes were great the whole time. They had so many games to choose from - and recent games that we actually wanted to play (not just dated board games). I saw signs saying they also have trivia on Wednesday's, which I will definitely be going back for. Overall, it is a cute little spot that I definitely recommend to anyone looking to have some drinks at a place that is not overrun by the typical rowdy crowd you can easily find in that area. read more

I really want to like this place more than 2 stars worth, but the staff really makes that difficult. Pros: the atmosphere is pretty chill and they have board games, which is clearly their biggest draw beyond being a simple bar in Wrigleyville. Cons: the bar staff clearly has better things to do than tend bar. Being there on the Friday after Thanksgiving, it wasn't terribly busy, yet the 2 bartenders working there seemed to have little to no patience for their patrons.. they announced last call at 1:15, which I had no problem with in general, but then 30 minutes later (i.e. 15 minutes before they actually close) my friend and I were very rudely asked to leave, because apparently 1:45 = 2:00 to them, so we were forced to finish our board game early for the arbitrary whims of 2 bartenders who apparently wanted SO DESPERATELY to lock the doors at the stroke of 2AM, despite the fact that there were about 10 other patrons there as well, also wrapping up. So congrats, ladies. You managed to successfully shoo away 2 peaceful patrons who were mindful of the time just so you could go home from a job a few minutes earlier from a job you apparently hate badly... I'll be damned if I make the mistake of giving you my business again. Huzzah... read more

This bar is responsible for me meeting my wife, subsequently having a daughter, and the catalyst for an impromptu "Mexican hat dance" by a victorious patron previously locked in a Jenga battle to last the ages. This is the bar that we went to for promotions, birthdays, holidays, engagements, making it through grad school. The Tavern that was 35 or 27 steps away from home (depending if you enters through the front or back) There is something about a beer poured by Mark that brings a unique happiness and sense of calm. Guthrie's is a friendly place to toddle into while escaping Chicago winters or hiding out on a Tuesday night in August with the front door open. The smell of this well loved corner tavern is as memorable as the high gloss red paint on the front door that welcomes its loyal patrons. It's my kind of place, one of unique character and friendly imperfections (did anyone else notice that the lampshades up front were always crooked?) this to me made it perfect. This bar had a pulse and a life that brought happiness even when you were 146 points in the hole playing scrabble. Where neighbors become friends indeed. A really BIG thank you to Mark, Steve, Chris. What a disappointment this place was to me. I guess i believed the hype. The only redeeming quality of this place was that I was with some good company (which the bar really couldn't take credit for) and all of the fun board games. The place was like a meat locker, especially the back room. A few more drop in degrees and you would be able to see your breath. My hands were so cold that I was almost unable to shuffle the cards. The bartender was really out there in left field. I went up there on two separate occasions and I was ignored twice. Both times I was the only one waiting. The first time he just stood there talking to a chick while I held my $20 out there. I know the dick saw me because he looked at me twice. I am sorry I was born with a penis buddy but I am trying to spend some money in your freaking bar! The second time he just stood there staring into space. I had to get his attention twice. I am a generous tipper and I tipped him nicely the first round. The second time I gave a marginal tip because of the shit service and the dickhead give me a look. Maybe if he got his head out of his ass he would have received more. Because of the sub zero temperatures, crappy service, and sticky floors way too early in the night, I will not be returning here again. read more

I can understand that you are not expecting a large crowd on a Tuesday night, and I can understand that the service may be slow because of it. Guthrie's is a pretty solid place all around. Problem is, everyone in the neighborhood realizes this so it tends to get crowded pretty quickly. The front of the bar is really narrow which makes it a bit of a chore to elbow your way to the back patio. Oddly enough, the back patio seems to always have the most room which is bizarre as this is where one should head to experience what really sets Guthrie's apart. What is that you ask? Why nothing less then a bookshelf of board games open to your drunken disposal. Warm, cozy, beer, whiskey, lots of facial hair, funky painted ceiling tiles, tampons in the bathroom, board games, checkered table clothes, cheap pizza, mustard and pretzels, boys, beer, whiskey... You get the pictures. Plus, it's a good spot to go to if you are on a date or with someone you don't feel like awkwardly staring at for a few hours while getting buzzed. I have been going here for many years and have loved the laid back vibe. Though the last time I went there was with an ex-boyfriend and his friends, about 6 months ago, from out of town on a Wednesday evening I believe. We got there about 8pm and sat at the bar, and had to beg to get even our first of many rounds of drinks. Mind you, we weren't drinking miller light, we were drinking Chimay and Lindman's just to name a few. And the bar was barely busy, when we arrived. One would think that one wouldn't have any issues getting more $12 bottles of beer when you are sitting right there at the bar. When my exes friends arrived we moved to a table, and even after the first asian bartender left and the older guy with the ponytail showed up, the poor service continued. Whenever my ex would GO UP TO THE BAR and attempt to get another round of beer, now for the 4 of us, he would be purposely ignored. He finally gave up, and had me go up to the bar with him in the hopes of getting another round or two. Even after I went up to the bar, the bartender guy wouldn't even acknowledge me until I started to lean over the bar and wave my hands in his face. Both my ex, and myself were fit to be tied at the end of the evening, and made a point of leaving a ZERO tip on a tab that was over $80. The guy with the ponytail had the nerve to call my ex back into the bar and demand why he wasn't receiving a tip. My ex then told him it was because of the shitty service that we had received the entire evening. The bartender then made some excuse about the place being busy. It was a week night, and even with us WALKING up to the bar to get more rounds, we still weren't getting served. There is no excuse for that. Had he even ONCE acknowledged us and said to us that he would be with us in a minute that he was "busy" we would have left a tip. But the blatant rude service got him a big fat zero! I believe in tipping, and I will tip up to 50% for great service, but I have no problem with NOT leaving a tip for bad or rude service. A tip should be for service rendered, not just because you felt like maybe getting more beer. read more

It's a great place to go for a change of pace from the rest of the establishments in the area, particularly on a weeknight. And it doesn't even get crowded during Cubs games, so you can easily watch the game. So why 3 stars? We pretty much always sit at the same table and as a result, usually get the same server. And man, is she a bitch. Typically when you are a waitress, the expectation is that you will, in fact, have to wait on people. It's not just a clever name, honey. So stop acting so annoyed when we order another round, and then freak out when we go to the bar for a beer instead because you seem so bothered by us. Make up your mind! Arrive a bit early, stake out a table and grab a board game. This place is perfect for two or four. I went with a group of six and we had trouble finding a good comfy spot. They have a great selection of beers and offer menus from neighborhood menus, encouraging you to order in for food. This bar is alllllllllll about ambiance. It's dimly lit, but perfectly bright - if that makes any sense at all. The ceiling is AWESOME, as is the rest of the decor. And there are BOARD GAMES. First of all they have tons of board games from Connect Four to Jenga to Scrabble to Cat-opoly (that one doesn't seem to get much play). If you haven't played board games while inebriated you are seriously missing out on a good time. The bar is definitely unique (was that a ceiling tile covered in creepy doll heads?), the bottled beer selection is good (try the Three Floyds or the Left Hand Milk Stout), the bartenders kick ass (I'm a sucker for free birthday shots), and the crowd is mellow and surprisingly d-bag free despite being a few blocks from Wrigley. At times, I get a little bored at the same ol' bar conversation...yawn! Why not play some board games? They have a whole shelf of board games to play while you wet your whistle all night long. Im sad to give my old favorite gem two stars but theyve really let things go downhill. First off we grabbed a table and were planning to order food and there was a waitress walking around but she never came over to us to get our orders. Then we went to the bar to order food and drinks and the lady took our order then went and was talking to someone in the back and didnt come back for ten minutes, AND THEN started taking someone elses drink orders. We were like hello its been 30 minutes now we at least want our drinks and then she tried to give me jack and coke instead of jameson and coke which i know the difference. I confronted her and said i saw you pour jack into it can you fix it? and she told me i was mistaken. I cant drink jack...i hate the taste. So then we decided to play a board game, well needless to say they are all grimey, stink, and most are missing essential pieces to even play the game.
