I first went to Parrots about 20 years ago and always knew it to be a chill neighborhood dive bar; but after returning for the first time since COVID I was pleasantly surprised to learn it was under new ownership. They've kept the chill neighborhood vibe and all things quirky that make Parrot's unique, while upping the food game. The menu consists of standard bar fare, with everything from sharable appetizers to burgers and pizza. The steak nachos were surprisingly delicious: a combination of homemade chips drenched in yummy processed cheese sauce with flavorful bites of steak. The pizzas are light and thin tavern style and perfect for sharing. Both food and drink prices are super reasonable, and the staff is friendly. Will certainly be back more frequently! read more

Unfortunately I had a bad experience with the bartender. He ignored my friends and I, then when I went up alone he randomly stopped serving me (I was completely fine and there was no reason to) and he even lied and said they stop serving at midnight, then started pouring drinks for others. He was very rude to my friends as well. He wore a hat that said "you're not an influencer you're just a whore" which I thought was weird. I first came to parrots about 2 years ago. I was relatively new to the city at the time and had my local bars decided. Fortunately, I had an annoying roommate who disparaged Parrots. He was legitimately scared. I've always been a contrarian so I elected to go in one day. When you walk in, it's a bit of a time warp, and that's awesome. Prices are more than fair and the selection will leave no one wanting. When I first came here, there was a legendary bartender/owner named Grant. I brought friends here and asked how the pizza was. Deadpan, the man says to me, "honestly... best frozen pizza in Chicago." He was right. So I don't what you need out of your neighborhood bar, but I can confidently say that Parrots won't miss. Parrot's is definitely a dive bar. I say that with love. I came here for the first time with my wife and a friend after dinner, on a Saturday. We wanted to get a couple drinks and play some pool or darts. Real, steel-tipped darts, not that electronic abomination. I love both, so the fact that they had both (and free!) was a huge draw. The pool table was pretty much constantly taken, and I didn't feel like challenging for the table, so we just played darts. Two boards, so no issues, at least not that night. The beer selection is good, at least in bottles and cans. I didn't see anything that blew me away on tap. Bummer. Wine selection sucked, but there is a full bar, of course. I stuck with beer. The waitress in the back room was awesome! Super nice, very accommodating and really friendly. She made it totally worth the visit all by herself. I've never played darts until tonight when i went to Parrots Bar & Grill and apparently i'm pretty decent (yay me!) We got arrived a bit early (like 7ish?) not too many people yet... My friends and i set up camp in the back room by the darts and pool table. Beer selection is decent and as the evening went on a waitress would show up to clean up cups and take any orders. There are only two single person bathrooms. I didn't order any food there but the food looked like typical bar food. I would come back to hang out with friends, play darts and just relax a bit. read more

There aren't a lot of places where you can find free pool in LP/Lakeview. There aren't a lot of places where a jack on the rocks is only $3.50. And in addition to all the other things mentioned about this place, it is chock full of the biggest collection of parrotphrenalia in all the land. Parrots is America. Anytime any kind of historical event goes down, I know that I can go to Parrots to clown - that's what me and the other guys in the Birdcage say. The 'Birdcage' - by the way is what us Parrot regulars call ourselves. Anywho. Whenever sh*t goes down, I know Parrots will be there for me. for instance: when JFK was assassinated, I was at Parrots. when the Challenger exploded, I was at Parrots. when my first and third children were born, I was at Parrots. when 9/11 happened and I was supposed to be at work in one of the towers, I was at Parrots. when we got that freedom hater Bin Laden, I was at Parrots. and finally, when my wife left me, I was at Parrots. Come to think about it, this bar just may have ruined my life. So it begs the question: is Parrots the worst bar in the world? Or, is it the best? Before heading to some bars I often like to check Yelp to see what all the fuss is about. The basic information given was that Parrot's is a dive and that there is free popcorn and free pool. Much of the rumor was substantiated as the second you walk into the bar it is a narrow way in with dim dim lights with some 1970's looking decor. The patrons were all older people in their forties who looked like they probably visited this bar several times a week or more. The bar is bigger than it appeared from when I first walked in. There is a zigzagging way to get to the other parts of the bar and it seems as if Parrot's annexed some other bar since one room looks kind of like a pub and then the other is older wood super dive looking. I spent all of my time in their game room which featured free pool with cue stick chalk, free electronic plastic darts, and of course free popcorn. In the corner was also a wooden middle finger shaped piece of plywood, what it was for - I haven't a clue. Do not come here early, they will have community college football on, there won't be any music and the deafening silence can only be eliminated through the sound of you and your crew's talking. Beers here are like five bucks, but we all ended up buying a neverending row of pitchers while spilling popcorn all over the table and floor by accident. The crowd is interestingly diverse. As I mentioned previously, there were some neighborhood locals who camped out in the front bar. Outside, someone parked their motorized cart that drove them around, why? Obviously because they were trying to get hammered! Collared shirt asians lined one room. Random yuppies were in another room, I had a crew of nerd kids all sporting collared shirts ourselves. Th funniest group I witnessed were three especially nerdly looking people. From my perspective, I saw one as a Dungeon Master, the other looked like a short version of Napoleon Dynamite that may have spoke Klingon, and one older looking lady that probably spoke Elven. They played pool and did not look particularly good at it, but I do not care since I am not particularly good at pool myself. The kicker was when Klingon started crying! DOH Anyways I don't find anything particularly wrong about the place. They also serve pizza on top of free popcorn and also $10 pitchers of any beer. The free pool and plastic darts and music make the place worth it especially if you live in the neighborhood. I will hold a neutral stand on the place due to the neighborhood and crowd. read more

It's definitely a dive bar. So, don't go there expecting anything else. That being said, I've always had a blast. The bar has a really odd layout and there are a bunch of different areas and places to sit. They have a juke box, pool table, and a dart board. Rest assured that no matter where in the bar you're sitting there will be a number of old, neon beer signs and/or interesting art selections adding to your experience. There's never really a set crowd at Parrot's. It always seems as if the most random assortment of people just happen across it or stumble inside. The bathrooms at this place are an experience--very small and one time my friend's foot went through the floor. Consider yourself warned on that front. read more

My guy is always here with his buddies from work. I went there for the first time last weekend and it was everything everyone says it is, and more. Now, I'd rather my guy cheat on me than make popcorn without me, so the fresh, free, oil-popped corn would be enough to get five stars. But I loved Sarah the Saucy Server and the pitchers were nice and big. Not like the mini-pitchers they charge $10 on Weed St. I liked the salty bartender, too. Totally perfect for the Lincoln Parkster on those occasions where you must get your drink on early in the day and just cant be bothered to put on make-up or clean clothes. This was my hangout way back around 1999-2001 until i moved away. I still visit every time I come back to Chicago and am happy to say nothing at all has changed, at least as of when I visited last year. Its so unlike all the other bars in LP or Lakeview. Yes, its a dive, and I miss it so. Get to know Grant and the rest of the crew. Take care of them and they'll take care of you. BTW, popcorn and pool has always been free there, and they do serve food, but its just frozen stuff thrown in a toaster oven. ;) There's plenty of 24-hour greasy spoons to stumble to after the bar closes, eat popcorn until then. read more
