Standard dive bar in Chicago. Came in for a few beers and was anything that you could expect out of a typical bar. It was a little small and hard to walk around but they did have a pool table and the music was good. Service was pretty good as well. If I lived in the area, I could consider this like a local corner bar that I would hang out at. read more

Langes is considered a neighborhood bar. In my opinion one of the best of its kind. Bobby was bartending on our visit and made sure everyone was attended to. If you are a regular and he knew your drink of choice it was waiting for you. Not the biggest of places so be prepared to get to know your neighbor. read more

I've been coming here for a couple of years now with various pool leagues. They have a single table, which is free, and that's what we play off of. The staff is always super nice - to me, part of what makes a bar "good" is how quickly my water gets refilled. I drink adult beverages too, but I sip on water all night. So far, after multiple trips, I think I've only had to ask for a refill once or twice. They're very prompt. With alcoholic drinks, I get an offer for another round, but the bartenders are never pushy, which I appreciate. I also see that there are plenty of non-league-people there too. There's a juke box, so it seems like a place where people go after they get off the brown like, have a beer, and then head home. There are occasional evidences of hipster/bro activity, but not an outbreak. read more

This is an a-ok dive bar. We stopped in on an afternoon, so the place was pretty empty. It has a lot of space to it. There's pool. The bartender was friendly. The patrons were interesting. The beers were cheap. The beer list was your usual standards. Not much to write home about. But if you're in the neighborhood and want a drink, it's a perfectly a-ok spot to stop in. read more

Southport is lined with tons of trendy, overpriced and cliched bars. This is an aberration to the rule. The place is very small, has one pool table, a large bar and sweet bartenders that drink with you! If you are near the Southport Brown line stop and looking for a quiet, neighborhood, dive style bar then this place is for you. Its kind of like the north side version of the Two Way without the hipsters vs locals turf war. Instead you have the locals and upcoming yuppies in a turf war that doesn't get as rowdy. I have to go here more often after I move from Albany Park since it will be much closer and much better than the flip-flop frat bars that define this area. I heart dive bars. read more

I have finally figured out how to work the type of juke box that is in Lange's. Perhaps that's because I finally tried it while sober. I got 18 choons for five bucks. Not too shabby. Alabama Song, Back Door Man, Good Girls Don't, Star Star, You Dropped a Bomb on Me, PYT, Backstabbers, Bennie and the Jets, Precious, Have a Drink on Me, Take Me Out, etc. I rock. No Beatles. No Zeppelin. No matter, I suppose. It's a singles juke box. No complete albums. Albums, sadly, just don't matter anymore. Divey cheap beer, pool and choons. Not bad. Not great but not bad. Only been here once -- and it was years ago -- but big points for being the ONLY bar I know of in the city to have bitter lemon (like 50/50 and Squirt) as a mixer. The one spot (outside of the UK) where I know I can go out and have a delish gin & bitter lemon, the best cocktail in the world. EDITED 4/25/08: Came for a few cheaper cocktails before going to the Vic (with their high-priced, tiny drinks). First drink was $4.50 and I paid with a $5. Second drink I pulled out a $20, so I should've gotten $15.50 back, right? WRONG! When I went to gather my change and leave, I saw 1s and no $5s or a $10. I told the bartender that I had given him a $20 and he insisted that it was a $10. I KNOW it was a $20 but had to go. I figured I'd call back and they would've found that they were $10 over in the register. (Could also go the other way, with the bartender knowingly pocketing the $10 at the end of the night.) I haven't been able to speak to the manager yet to confirm whether the register was over. Strangely enough, I got an email from the BARTENDER thanking me for stopping in! (The bartender who answered the phone when I called for the manager must've given him the head's up. I never mentioned Yelp, but he did know my name as I was speaking to other customers that night.) I have the feeling I won't be getting my $10 back, and I most definitely will never go to Lange's again. At $9.50/cocktail, it would've been cheaper drinking at the Vic. (BTW: Check Amanda G's review on 4/26. I think she's the bartender who answered the phone when I called, and then felt compelled to review her place of employment and mention tipping/her two kids to feed.) read more

First time I went to Lange's was last night. Talk about a diamond in the rough - or should i say, a rough in a sea of diamonds? or at least a cool bar in a sea of douche bag cubs / "irish" bars. Idioms aside, this is not a bar you'd expect in the fancy Southport neighborhood, but I had a lot of fun. The (lone) bar tender handled requests quite well despite all of the people at the place - he was able to remember who was drinking what in our party, which is maybe insignificant but goes a long way. Interior is typical crappy dive bar - wood paneling, promotional posters, etc. The bar is in the center and is formed like a giant square - which is kind of interesting. There's also a pool table, and someone there was pumping the juke box full of great 80's metal (Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Europe, etc). They have Hamm's, Old Style in BOTTLES, and shiner bock as well as a handful of tap beers for $5. So it's not as cheap as something further west, but probably cheaper than most on that block. They also accept cards, which is uncommon for a bar like that. I'm a fan of Lange's and if I'm ever forced to head back to that neighborhood, I'll recommend: "Let's hang at Lange's." read more

Lange's is a great place to hangout. From the smoke still wafting in the air to the hard rock tunes on the juke box, it doesn't get much better. It appears the this low-key dive bar went through a slight renovation which takes it down a star in my mind. I think they allow one dive per square mile in Lakeview. Lange's claims the Southport section. My brother and I came in for a nightcap, and we had the misfortune of doing so on the day of a Cubs game. Never mind that it was 11:00 on a Thursday night and the game had ended seven hours earlier; these assholes were still out in full force, taking over the jukebox, the bartender, the bar itself. I'd been going to Southport bars for years before giving Lange's a try. I'll have to wait at least until September to give it another shot. read more

A friend and I had some time to kill before a movie at the Music Box, so we stopped into Lange's Lounge for a drink. I was happy to order a can of Hamm's. My friend ordered a mix drink. Echoing some of the other comments, it's a small bar without a lot of seating. We picked some bar stools next to a window and tried to distance ourselves from the jukebox speaker, which, in my opinion was cranked up a little too loud for 8pm. Most of the patrons were older guys who had clearly gotten off work around 5pm and headed straight for Lange's to throw back a few (or a lot) of beers. Unfortunately, one of them decided to take an interest in my female friend. This guy was obviously pretty hammered. He attempted to make conversation with us, but got a little too touchy feely with my friend, who was understandably uncomfortable. The bartender told him multiple time to quiet down. After about 20 minutes of his constant staring, constant apologies and constantly telling my friend that she looked like his daughter, we decided it was time to leave. Yes, we had a bad experience. But coupled with the lack of atmosphere, the too-loud jukebox and the general feeling of despair, I don't think I'll be returning to Lange's any time soon. read more

If you're a sucker for low key bars with cheap(er) beer and a rockin' jukebox, this place will be right up your alley. I don't live in the area, but when I go to visit friends up there, this is one of the places we end up frequenting, and I have no complaints about that. In my experience, it hasn't been very crowded, so unlike many of the bars in the neighborhood you're not fighting frat boys to order your beverages. My one complaint is that when I asked if they have any beer specials, the bartender told me they had domestic bottles (miller and bud products) for $3.50. What she neglected to tell me was that they ALWAYS have Hamm's for $2.50. Why would I want to pay MORE to drink an inferior beer? Hamm's is from the land of sky blue waters for chrissakes! read more

Langes is one of the most smokey bars I have been to on Southport, but a good time nonetheless. The crowd was a great time -- no pretentious people lurking about, and some of my friends were able to join in a game of pool. The beers were cheap, and there was plenty of room to sit around, which is more than I can say for most of the over-crowded - probably over fire code bars lining Southport. If you are looking for a place were you can wear your sweatshirt and jeans and get no stares on a Saturday night, think about stopping in at Langes. read more

I read the reviews on here and was excited to visit Lange's for something a little different than the other bars on Southport. Everything looked good to begin with until I met the staff. The bartenders I found to be rude and would not serve you unless you tipped well. They definitely played the tip game and it was not appreciated. I tip at the end of the night based on service and these folks were completely arrogant Also, contrary to other reports on Yelp, the drinks are not cheap - $2.75 for a Bud Light. That's no steal considering every bar on Southport has specials. I would NOT recommend Lange's and will be telling others about it. read more

Most of the other reviews about Lange's are right on. It's a great place to go after work or even after dinner if you want to go someplace laid back and low key. It's a come-as-you are, drink til you're happy, casual place. The drinks are cheap ($8 for a tall Grey Goose and Red Bull) and so is the pool table ($1 a game). Either the game is usually on or the juke box is playing great rock hits. I don't know what's with that other review about needing to tip a lot to get service. Lange's is never so crowded you need to court the bartenders for service, and as I've met the owners and know that they sit at the bar most nights, I think it's gotta be the reviewer, not the server. I'd say that the bartenders that I've met there are the most easy going on Southport. Most Sundays during the football season the owners provide some free food around lunch time. But aside from that, don't expect to eat at Lange's. Stop at Coobah first for dinner and then walk down to Lange's for drinks. Cheers! read more

four stars for the thursday night open mic blues jams. they have this old blues guy who leads a random ever-changing group of walk-ins in a bunch of different blues numbers. then during breaks he tries to hawk his CDs for 20 bucks a pop. it's fantastic. i probably wouldn't go any other night of the week, but the blues night is a lot of fun. read more

Can't believe this kind of bar exists on Southport. Go here early in the night, and you'll be hanging with a drunken mob of construction workers who buy each other shots. Will give you a rowdy welcome when you come in, but then will leave you be as you drink in peace. KInd of place where a guy comes in, throws down his pack of smokes on the bar, lays out a 20, and drinks until its gone. Day bartender is awesome, gave us a free beer when the tap wasn't workin. Bathrooms surprisingly nice for a dive. Would be 3 stars in a more working-class neighborhood, but gets an extra star just for doing what it does on the corner that it does it on. This place is the epitome of the phrase dive bar. Even though the smoking ban has been in effect for a couple of years now it still had the musky old bar smell from years of cigarettes. A friend suggested Lange's to me a year ago and my first thought was "Southport, forget it, Chads and Trixies." I'm glad I went because I've never not had fun here. Cool jukebox, nice and attentive bar service, decently priced drinks. The bonus is the Tamale Man who comes in almost every time. This is bar to drink in and converse and enjoy some music. A nice bar that is not pretentious as many other ones along Southport can be, they had baseball other than the Chicago Cubs on and they have one old,small pool table that fits nicely in this small bar.
