Very cool small dive bar, though I even hesitate to call it a dive as that can sometimes have negative connotations. It's an inexpensive neighborhood bar, that lots of people seem to love. They have a few TVs and a pool table, indoor and outdoor seats, and even a house pale from Lake Effect that was really good. There's lots of cool memorabilia on the walls and the bartenders were cool. It seems like this has a pretty big reputation, I can't believe I'd never been here until now. Thankfully my friend found it and took a group of us there. I can't wait to find an opportunity to go back again. Thankfully it's not far from me, and easy to get to, right off the blue line and 90/94, and parking nearby isn't difficult. read more

Check out this good old bar. It's in fact one of Chicago's oldest bars, and the prices are a throwback of sorts. The Chipp Inn may be a golf reference, or it may not be so whatever. About all there is to know is that it's cheap ass beer and stuff that can be hard to find. You should also know it's cash only. Bars like this are hard to find anymore. It's usually a lot more expensive even for crappy ass beers. This is one of the few exceptions. It's about $3 for a can of beer. Speaking of hard to find, some of the beers here are hard to find anywhere else. If you're looking for Blatz, Schlitz, or other old school stuff, come get a bottle or a can. The liquors aren't that expensive either. It's mostly cheap ass shit of course. The only bad thing is that it's cash only. Bar does have an ATM. Try to remember bringing cash to avoid the stupid ass fees. For sure this is one of the diviest bars. It's small and hard to move around, especially if you're playing pool. The beer selection has hard to find stuff, the liquor selection is good and cheap, and while there's not really any food menu they do have chips and stuff. read more

But I went outside to smoke and there was an airshow going on and I was trying to just close my eyes and deal with the sounds of the jets so I didn't have a panic attack. The Chipp Inn is one of Chicago's oldest pubs. I consider it a hidden gem and the perfect dive bar. Be aware they are a cash only bar, but they do have an ATM on hand. On a beautiful, sunny spring day in Chicago we stopped in around 1pm (opening time). Mark was our friendly bartender. We tried an array of old timey beers such as Stroh's, Schlitz, PBR, and Hamm's. Each was served ice cold. While we were enjoying ourself we noticed that basically everyone sitting at the bar knew eachother by name. Mark would serve up their beer of choice, shot, or both before they even made their way to their seat. This is a definite local hangout. But lucky for us, the locals were friendly and we seemed to fit right in. Needless to say by the time we left we knew everyone in the bar by name and now we have a local neighborhood bar to call our own when we are back in town. Cheers to the Chipp Inn. read more

I've lived right around the corner from Chipp Inn for the last year or so. I was really looking forward to checking it out before COVID, but right as I moved in lockdown happened and many businesses closed. However, I learned they were open again and was able to visit this weekend, and I'm glad I did. Friendly bartender and super cheap drinks. I seriously felt like I was in college again with how cheap these specials were. There's the group of regulars that know everyone when they walk in, say hello and the bartender is already offering up their usual order. I love this little dive bar! The Chipp Inn has just one bartender and honestly that's just plenty for their Saturday night crowd. The crowd is a mix of people but everyone is quite friendly. They have a jukebox so the music ranges from wanting to blow your brains out top 40 stuff to awesome GnR songs! They have cans of Blatz & Hamm's for $1.75 - score! Apparently these specials change daily based on what's scribbled on their chalk board. They also had Little Sumthin Wild on tap, as well as some other good brews. Pool table in the back is .75 per play - bring quarters. The decor is divey with beer signs all over the walls and the florescent beer signs all around the windows. It's a true neighborhood bar without having the feeling of unwelcoming you'll sometimes catch at those types of spots. My friends and I had never been there before last weekend and we felt right at home. A friend even tipped over my glass of Little Sumthin and the bartender gave me a new one gratis. Wow. Best bar experience I have had in a long while. My beau and I were out on a Sunday night, checking out a couple new spots in and around the "greater 'hood." Chipp Inn was on the itinerary. We walk in. There are maybe 10 people there. All sitting at the bar. 20-somethings to middle-aged. We stumbled into a "regulars" birthday celebration. Which sounds pretty intimidating right? This place is interesting. It's a dive bar. One of the oldest in the city. Some classic North American Adjunct lagers in the cooler. When I came in it seemed like the regulars were watching Jeopardy. I joined in and had a good time. I'm unsure if it was because of the time being happy hour or just general dive bar practices but the Hamm's and a Strohs. It was my first time having Strohs. A new Tuesday night, due to a changing work/life situation. When left to my own devices and without a host (or quasi room mate) to "entertain" me, I will do one of two things: seek out a completely decadent and over indulgent place, spend quite a bit of cash money and either feel edified by that expenditure or let down. The alternative, completely diametric, and more entertaining thing to do - is to look for where the locals drink, preferably slashie style (both bar and liquor store in the same place). While not a slashie - the Chipp certainly didn't let me down from a "let's just take it easy" perspective. Location: 5 out of 5 Literally down the street (half a street) from my new Tuesday night digs. Walking is easy, street parking is available, and if you must take public transportation, the blue line and/or the Chicago bus are not so far away. Decor: 4 out of 5 Exactly what I was looking for in a neighborhood joint. Unpretentiously and unironically divey with a pool table as others have mentioned (which wasn't being used), a simple and somewhat sticky bar, old timey cash register where you have to punch physical tactile keys to get it to work, and old posters, signs, remnants, and memories of bygone times and now hard to find beer manufacturers adorn the somewhat dark and just a little pungent interior. In full transparency, I happened to go on a day when it was in the 90s with high humidity, so perhaps this contributed to what I perceived to be just a little bit of stickiness and dampness. Quality of Drink Available: 1 to 5 out of 5, so we'll split it and call it 3, depending on how you want to approach things. This one is an odd one for the following reasons. I've been hard pressed to find a place that has Hamm's on tap, but Chipp Inn does. But wait...look to the left and to the right, and you see a beerscape that's as varied as the clientele. 5 Rabbits makes sense because we're in Chicago. Lagunitas has a Chicago connection now but we're getting a little bit more "upscale." Founders? Whoa...crossing all sorts of sociobeerconomic (see what I did there?) boundaries here. This was evident by the other patrons when I went: a younger "hip" couple consuming sandwiches they had brought in and a few blue collar regulars. The same range goes for the liquor collection, and while you won't find any haut couture, i.e., boutique flavored vodkas, you'll see an eclectic mix of whisk(e)y, bourbon, and vodkas. And how could I forget that on Tuesday evenings, you can get the poor man's boilermaker for 4$ featuring Beam and the BEAST?! I should also mention that they have Blatz in cans, which is rare(r) now in Chicago. Price: 4 out of 5 As someone has mentioned already, it's cheap but not THAT cheap. 2.50 for a Hamm's draft, 2 bucks for a can of Blatz. Not breaking the bank by any means, but not quite liquor store singles cheap. I'm not in tune to what the specials are each evening yet, but 4 $ for a Beam and Beast seems reasonable, and I imagine that much entertainment can arise from watching the over consumption of such options. Remember that this place is cash only, though an ATM is available. Customer Service: 4 out of 5 Friendly guy behind the bar who made small talk well. Didn't get into any deep conversations about life, love lost, dogs, politics, corruption, etc. but it doesn't mean that we won't get there one day. For my first visit - talking about Hamm's, the beer refreshing! and Blatz was a good introduction to this bar. Overall: 4 out of 5 Worth a visit if you're in the area, and I'll gladly go back to drink old school beers in peace, make small talk with the barkeeps, and hopefully watch and observe the shenaniganry that inevitably accompanies 4$ shots and beer combos. I like this bar. We showed up at 1030pm on a Thursday and there was one guy sitting in the bar. No music, just a couple TVs playing the news. We figured we'd still give it a try. It's clean, has a (tiny) pool table in the back, and seemed welcoming enough. Seven out of the 8 taps were local Chicago breweries (including Half Acre, Burnt City, Ten-Ninety, among others), and then the fridge was full of all the other shit people would want from a bar like this (Old Style, High Life, probably PBR etc). We ended up staying here for about 3 hours and by then it had nearly filled up. Joe the owner was nice, beers were good, crowd was friendly, what more could you ask for? PS. It's been around since the 1800s so it's most likely haunted. read more

Chipp Inn is one of those local dive bars that you can belly up to the bar, sit there for hours and just chill. Chipp Inn is one of my favorite bars for three reasons: 1 - I love a bar where it's not just hip to order PBR, but seems appropriate. 2 - The local clientele are always entertaining. 3 - It's always great to have a bartender who you can actually chat with than one who simply wants to serve you a beer and move on to the next customer. Did I mention they even have $2 Hamm's on Saturdays? Chipp Inn is a tiny neighborhood bar with a loyal local crowd and cheap drinks. I love it here. There aren't many bars in the area and we went in on Christmas eve night for a drink, it was open, but totally empty. At first, we thought well this will be a weird experience as it's small and intimate but once we got chatting with the bartender he was so talkative and friendly, we had a great time. I'm partial to old man bars. I like them. I like their comfortable, worn-in feeling, the non-pretension, being able to drink and talk, and actually hear. I like talking to my bartenders, having control over the music by way of a jukebox, and i like dim lighting provided by kitchschy lamps. The Chipp Inn has all of this. I almost feel bad writing this, although I think most people know about the Chipp Inn already, and it remains laid back. I like the neighborhood feel, the people watching, the pool table, and the Schlitz on tap. Only things that could make it better are some sort of bar snack, like popcorn, cheeseballs, or snack mix, and a REAL jukebox. I hate those stupid internet ones. It's kinda grimey, it's cash only, and it's about the size of a shoebox, but the ratio of normal folks to total degenerates is very much in favor of the less entertaining. I didn't see one person that I was scared of what they might potentially do... Call me crazy, but I'd categorize it as more of a local watering hole what with the fancy jukebox and all. Dives don't let you play tunes from your iPhone. Still any place that beer prices have a 1 on the left side of the decimal point deserve at least 4 stars. read more

Upon my first visit to the good old Inn of Chipp, I found myself immediately set upon by a the bar's defensive local clientele. A gentleman accused my friend and I of refraining from "saying hello" when we walked through the bar entrance. So we said Hello. But the gentleman was adamant - we had broken a major convention at the Inn of Chipp, and this was not to be tolerated. Our excuse was simple, we are wandering minstrels, not from round these parts, and were unaware of the customs of this establishment. Perhaps he was just concerned that we had arrived unchaperoned. The Inn of Chipp is a small, neighborhood drinking hole, complete with amiable bar tenders, a pool table, Schlitz memorabilia, and over-friendly, effusive regulars. On occasions, they have Apricot Ale in stock, which satiates the tongue splendidly. And so, about the Inn of Chipp I hold no particular complaints, except general gripes with inebriated male clientele who become enchanted with their charisma and decide to overtake your evening with their faintly aggressive overtures. Oh Chipp Inn, thank you. I don't visit C.I. too often, but when I do it's like steppin back in time. From what I understand it has been around since at least the 30's. The bar is quite small, but there is a pool table in the back room area. Cool vintage pictures of the bar are on the wall's, plus old school beer signage. With the small size of this place, you get the feeling that your hangin out with a bunch of your close friends, in your own private bar. Which for some nights you might be looking for ? In no way is this a dive bar. There is a very good mix of customers at C.I., from the regulars to people who have just stumbled on to it or into it. You see it is located one block north off of Chicago Ave. I have always been greeted with a great attitude from the bartenders to the patrons. This place is a dive bar that makes me think it was plucked out of a small town in Wisconsin. It's dimly lit and small, but the drinks are cheap. It was surprisingly busy for a Thursday night, but the place never felt too packed. We just got drinks, no food, so I can't comment on that but the drinks were fine. The bathrooms were a little interesting, nothing too awful but they definitely fit in with the dive bar vibe. What do you get when you get when you have a sweet bartender who makes you feel instantly welcome; a crowd of drunk regulars dancing to Bowie; a bar potluck being held next to the pool table; and a nice owner who looks like a young Mayor Daley? The Chipp Inn, obviously! Even though I felt like an alcoholic ordering a bloody mary at 10pm on a Sunday, the awesome bartender did her best to cook something up without having all the ingredients. All the regulars welcomed us into the fold and told us to come earlier on another Sunday to partake in the cornicopia of delicious homemade goodness! On top of everything, the owner, who sat next to me and was obviously a little hammered, let me have several free drinks and was good conversation. Be sure to bring cash because if you run out, you'll have to hoof it to Banco Popular across the street. Also you can play the jukebox and pool that way.
