Have several times come across this basic bar and always wanted to come in. It turned out to be about as expected, maybe even better than that. Bob Inn is a total dive looking bar. Prices can be a bit higher on a few things, so it may not be a true one of course. The beer selection is mostly bottles and cans, and this is cash only. Bar is bigger than it appears. It goes back with a lot of room for hanging out. There's some arcade games and a pool table. Good stuff for a dive bar. The drinks are the main thing though. It's a couple bucks for the cheapest beer. Mass produced crap mostly but also a few crafts among these. It's about $8 for the most expensive cocktails. This includes Jameson and the like. If you're looking for a dive bar this place checks all the boxes. Stopped in around five on a Friday afternoon and there were a handful of patrons. The bartender was friendly and helpful. Bob's have always been good to me. (1) My dad's name is Bob and he's pretty awesome, enough said. (2) My first guy roommate was Bob (#1) and his girlfriend's mom used to FedEx us homemade lasagna, cookies, and banana bread. He was also a pretty cool roommate. (3) Another former roommate/virtual older brother, Bob (#2), has always looked out for me (even when I prefer he didn't) and always lets me bend his ear when I need it. Walking into Bob Inn for Jenny & Craig's birthday celebration I hoped my good fortune with all-things Bob would continue; luckily, I was not disappointed. Here are some of the reasons Bob Inn was good to me: * Reasonable prices, my Miller Lite's were only $2.75 (cash only) * Letting us use their grill and bring in food for the birthday celebration * Friendly service * Clean bathrooms (I can only vouch for the ladies) * Well positioned TV's to watch the games of your choice * Decent jukebox. Ventured over to celebrate Jen & Craig's B'day on Saturday afternoon. Not sure if they could have chosen a better place! The bar seems to be very family oriented and owner was pretty friendly. Love it when people say "We're going to the Bob" as the Bob Inn is high on my list of places just to sit, grab a beer and catch up with friends. I've been here for big and small parties and with just a few friends and each time I marvel at the friendliness of the "locals" and their willingness to engage with me from the moment I walk in the front door! The beer is cheap, the jukebox is ready to go with songs that you haven't heard in years, and in the warmer months they will fire up the grills and with self supplied meats- you can have a grilling experience second to none! If you like pool- the lone pool table in the back sees alot of action (I also get a kick out of the huge chunks of chalk which invariably ends up all over people throughout the night! If you drive- parking is easy as there are actually parking spaces on the east side of the building- a sort of "parking lot". How'd they do that? Cash is king here so leave the plastic at home! Lots of room to sit so pull up a stool, chat with the friendly bartenders, and just enjoy this little slice of "normalcy" in a world where that is sometimes hard to find. read more

What a great place! We searched it out solely based on seeing the T-Shirt and wanting to go on an adventure. I am a fan of dive bars, and this is a five star in that category. We walked in and the folks sitting at bar and bartender made us feel right at home. In fact, we were buying rounds for each other in short order. It was cinco de mayo and they had two crock pots of meat going for free tacos, one regular beef the other Polish. All in all, my wife's description of the Bob Inn as "sketchy Cheers" about nails it. Come close and I'll tell you a secret about Bob Inn. Closer. Closer...because I'm going to whisper. ((((If you aren't a regular, you really aren't going to fully enjoy the Bob Inn experience. You will pay more, be banished to the south side of the bar, and the old drunkards would as soon wipe their ass with your messenger bag as they would acknowledge you))) I had the good fortune of being dragged to the Bob Inn with a few young drunkard friends who have claimed the two end seats on the north side of the bar, where the regulars live. The rule is that you leave a pile of cash on the end of the bar. This is your kitty. You order your first drink and they take a few dollars out. The wad of cash is a tacit acknowledgment to the bar that you want to keep your glass full as long as you are sitting there. In the case of our party, that was five hours on a friday night, from 5 pm until 10 pm. The regulars almost never pay for their own drinks - rather they pay for each other's rounds. At the end of the night you have probably shelled out about $20 to cover the rounds you've bought the other regulars. Because buying a drink is so much more personal than shaking hands. Especially if you are a drunkard. If you see a small plastic shot glass face down in front of your seat, that means that you have a free round coming your way. Use it. And never, ever, ever up your poison to a call if you are drinking from the well. That's just bad form. Another Bob Inn rule is how you handle your money at the end of the night. If you have money left in your kitty, leave it for the barkeep. It is hers. Don't ask for change. Your face will be permanently seared in her mind and you'll likely never get cheap beer again. If there isn't enough, throw on another $10, or better yet, a $20. And that's a per person tip, not party tip. Look, you've barely spent anything after 5 hours. Don't be cheap. It reflects poorly on you and your drunkard friends. Do not blow off the attempts regulars make to talk to you, no matter how drunk they are. Politely take your leave when it gets overwhelming, and wish them a good evening. It will smooth your way the next time you visit the Bob Inn. Like most other bars in Chicago, the Bob Inn is frequented by the tamale guy. That's the only food available here, unless you count the $1 chips hanging on the wall. This is the fourth and final review in a 4-part series entitled, Big Sexy Gives It Up for Charity. And I quote, "Finally.....I promise to not fart, belch or do any other body function that will take away from our good time." These precious words have been lifted directly from Destry's official charity auction date post, and wuddaya know? Destry farted on our date. Twice. I begged him to squeeze his sphincter as tight as he could until we were out of the car, but he couldn't help himself. He dropped the mother of all ass in the car. I nearly suffocated to death. For serious. I swear to God it smelled like he shit out a dead baby. I feel compelled to mention this incident, not to out Destry as a deceiver, but to make a point: Destry kept his word. "How is that possible?" you say. "He nearly killed you by potentially causing you to choke on your own vomit!" Well, in spite of Destry's gas leak, I had a grand time on our date, so his bodily functions in fact did not take away from "our good time". Destry knows how to warm a place up in ways that don't involve flatulence, just enough that he can get away with a near-deadly squeaker now and then. Right, so less fart talk, more Bob Inn details... I've never been disappointed when I go to Bob Inn. It's in the top tier of must-visit Chicago dives. The beer is cheap, the jukebox offers solid early rock 'n roll, and the patrons are almost always drunk and friendly. My charity date night was no exception. Jenny R (my usual Bob Inn drinking partner), her hubbinator, and one of Destry's buds showed up to engage in the revelry. We downed quite a large number of PBRs, shot some pool, and engaged in conversation with some of the regulars, one of whom wanted to challenge us to a game of pool. When his time arrived, he decided he wanted to go out and get stoned instead. But he told us we could use his quarters, so it was all good. By the end of the night, Destry and I bonded in a way most men will never understand. That's right, we danced erotically to Creedence Clearwater Revival and ended the evening by making out on the pool table. Now, I might be making this part up since I was pretty essfaced by the time we left, but it sounds like a romantic way to end the night, so that's how I'll choose to remember it. I'll also choose to remember Destry looking like Kristen Bell at that point. read more

Leaving the Bob Inn each time, I feel like I just participated in the sequel to Hot Tub Time Machine. Sitting down at any of the tables here, I feel as though I've just been transported back to the 1970s. There are some bars in Chicago that try to revive the decade I was born in a kitschy way in order to feed the hipster craving for irony. This is not one of those bars. Everything seems to be exact down to the letter with no humor value intended. They must perform magic to do this. They must have a *turning straight into the imaginary camera*... BAR STOOL TIME MACHINE! First of all, they found a way to transport a White Sox bar into a Cubs neighborhood (Logan Square). The only way I would think this would be possible was if it was at their heyday of popularity in the days of the second coming of the waxed mustache. But, oddly, the televisions show games from modern times and yet the fans in white and black still scream along. Also, this bar's regulars seems to still worship the Bears like it's 1985. Though that is a time paradox I'd rather not discuss right now. Secondly, the music. Seriously. The jukebox makes it seem like the 1980s never happened, let alone the 1990s or the aughts. Every song sounds just like the Allman Brothers. I got punched in the arm for bringing this up on my most recent visit, but it's true. That is, except for the disco. I have never been here a single time when Abba has failed to play. For anyone who likes their rock southernified, this is a great place. Thankfully they keep it low (even enough so to talk) so my brain doesn't want to explode from too much twang. And, finally, the beer selection. Schlitz. Hamm. Pabst. There are brands here I didn't know still brewed in the modern era, so they must have transported them from the 1970s. Okay, well, I knew about Pabst (and, technically the other two as well), but who can argue with $3.00 PBR tall boys in this decade? In the prequel film to a Bob Inn experience, the main characters were able to go back in time and try to correct their mistakes in the location they were transported from (a ski resort with the eponymous hot tub). And I wish I could correct past mistakes I've made at the Bob Inn while sitting on its bar stools. Unfortunately, the Bob Inn is the kind of place where even if I could correct mistakes, I'd just keep making them again. read more

On that note, the drinks are outrageously expensive, the staff is mean and loves the Cubs. There are no old guys in uniforms with their name embroidered above their heart, there are no ballsy broads who have no problem asking how much you paid for your coat/shoes/bag because "you got robbed", the juke box blows, No specials EVER. Bob Inn is a great bar for cheap drinks, a free parking lot, and is still largely uninhabited by hipsters. I didn't think that was possible in Logan Square anymore. There's no "mixology" going on here, it's a dive bar with a basic beer list and a full bar. If you need a fancy cocktail list and a bar with cache, Bob Inn isn't it. I had a great time here with a few friends as we gathered for a UYE (good job, Destry!). On a Friday night, it wasn't crowded at all, although I left around 11:30 p.m., so I may have missed a late night crowd. There are plenty of four-top tables and seating at the bar. There's a jukebox, but the music wasn't too loud. I was able to hold a conversation and speak and listen without straining. The bartender was really friendly and polite as well. I needed a minute to decide what to drink, and she was totally cool about it. When she asked what we were up to that night, we said we were meeting some friends, and she then mentioned that she saw on the Internet that a group of people were meeting that night from Yelp. Congrats, Destry, you've made us famous, hahaha. Okay, not really...not at all. Most of the crowd appeared to be neighborhood folks, as Bob Inn is a great local spot for a cheap drink but not necessarily a destination. I'd definitely come back. read more

Pretty effin cool! I had the honor of celebrating the birthdays of Jenny and Craig here tonight and the Bob Inn is pretty effin cool. So laid back and comfortable. The staff was amazing and so nice. I was bellied up to the bar for most of the night and those ladies were on top of things. If I hadnt been a wuss I would have taken full advantage of those super cheap drinks. And so, while I won't be a regular because it's two bus rides from my current home, it's good to know the Bob Inn is there for those special times when I'm in the neighborhood. And while you didn't truly work your magic on me last night, I can see why other love you. Is it the $2 beers on Weds night? Or the fact that when I ordered 3 Lites and a Miller, the bartender verified that I wanted a Miller High Life? The champagne of bottled beers? (You have to be of a certain age to remember the "bottled" part of that slogan.) OK I finally made it to the Bob Inn. Been living a block away from it for over 2 years and never made it in there. And the verdict is... ...wierd. The other reviews are dead-on about all ages hanging harmoniously. I saw 20something hipsters, 30-ish beer joint looking guys, and middle aged men that look like retired cops or something. Beer's cheap, PBR for 2 bucks, Rolling Rock for 2.50. You can charge that when you've had the building forever I guess. I didn't get to hear any music as the cubs game was on, but I'm suspecting an unwittingly ironic selection resides therein. The bartender was a freakin' whirlwind, some other bartenders in this city can learn a thing or two from this gal. She was solo in a packed room and I didn't wait more than a minute or two to get my beer. Tip her well, she earns it. I'll be back as it was a pretty agreeable little dive super close to my house. I wouldn't wait too long to check it out if you haven't already, as I can see this going the way of old Tuman's (RIP): 1.It's going to be one of those under-the-radar great places for awhile 2. Word'll get out and the longtime patrons'll complain about the clientele change 3. Someone's going to make the owners an offer they can't refuse and they will make a mint off the sale of the place 4. It'll reopen as a crazy expensive homogenized ass bar. That just seems to be the way of things these days, so get yer ya-yas now. We weren't planning on bringing the 13 yo sister in law here, although we DO take all of our out of town guests here, but the cable went out during game 5 of the Crosstown Classic, so off to the bar we went, kiddo in tow. As usual, Jimmy and Annie could not have been nicer. They were excited to meet Jeff's little sister and both came over to chat her up. The regulars all came by to say hello and to welcome Kelly to Chicago, it was lovely. I need to start with the disclaimer that I went on a Sunday afternoon for Craig and Jenny's bdays, so I don't know what the place is like on a regular night. I can tell you they were extremely accomodating of us. They had the grill set up outside on a cold day and gave us tools, pans, etc, and let us bring our tons of food and set it up inside as well. The place was a nice, normal, no frills bar (I do like places like that. I am not always foofie). What was a step above for me was how friendly everyone who worked there seemed to be. As I was leaving, they yelled out to thank me for the salad I had made and to say goodbye. Nice touch. People are what really make a place. I am sure I will be back, to enjoy the people, the place, the cheap drinks, and hopefully the grill on a much warmer day. p.s. save your quarters, don't use the video game machine. Well, in my opinion....and everyone's reviews here are just opinions....Bob Inn is both. A small bar that has enough seating to actually be crowded, though it wasn't the night I was there drinking. A long bar with several TVs make this a place you can kill some time, watch a game, or catch up with friends in a clean, friendly, and comfortable space. For example, north siders may generalize the south side as dangerous, and city-dwellers generalize the suburbanites all as soccer moms with spoiled children. Well, I have this notion that all north side bars resemble those of Wrigleyville, filled with frat boys and trixies. So I tend to stay in my comfort zone. Well, this place broke my generalization. This place is a laid-back tavern, a gin-mill dedicated to the hard-working blue collar peoples that made Chicago what it is. Old and musty, but absolutely wonderful! I arrived early to meet some friends, and felt no trepidation about being in the place alone. I chatted with the very friendly bartender, and a few of the regulars. The best part of it all? After a bank snafu, I found myself penniless, wanting to watch the Sox play the Yankess I met friends at Bob Inn, one of the few North Side places to support South Side baseball. The bartender, Betty, served me water all night long - didn't charge me a dime. I totally owe her a huge tip as soon as my check clears. With four TVs in the bar, we watched the Sox beat the Yanks while some other guys watched the Cubs top Milwaukee. There was some ribbing, but it was all in good fun. When patron dropped his bottle of beer, twice, Betty gave him a new one and made a joke about how each time he dropped a bottle, the Sox scored. My beloved Bob Inn, my longtime home away from home. How I adore your cheap beer, cheap booze, and cheap thrills. Honestly, bought a round last night, 2 PBRs, Walker Red rocks, and a 16oz Becks, for $13. Beat that anywhere in Chicago. The barmaids are all "old stoves", great, friendly and funny as fuck. Eclectic crowd, from old to young. Great super cheese juke. I stick with the 16oz Becks cans for $3. Most importantly it's a SOX BAR! That's right, a great joint on the northside to watch REAL BASEBALL. They'll play that other teams game too, but I wouldn't recommend wearing your awful "Wrigley Field" shirt in this joint, what's the deal with those anyway?!? Thursdays are great as the Coffin Banger rolls out the oldies but goodies. Honestly I can't think of another bar where I've heard "Billion Dollar Baby" by Alice Cooper. I'm in love with this place, even when the trying-to-hard crew infests my cozy alcohol oasis. It's grand. read more
