Heard about this place way too many times and finally decided to give it a try with some friends, while sitting out on their patio. Luckily when we went on an evening one weekday, we were sat pretty quick but the place did look pretty busy. Got their famous mushroom pasta and it did not disappoint! My favourite dish to order here is their mushroom truffle pasta (Mafalde Ai Funghi). Very rich, creamy and flavourful! A bit pricey but worth a try if you come here. I went here and loved the mafalde al fungi a few years ago so re ordered it for delivery, and honestly this is my favourite dish on the menu (I've had some of the meat dishes and kale salads) I will come here for this mushroom pasta dish! Even with delivery the other night and it was perfectly made, al dente, right temperature. The kale salad on the other hand was very underwhelming. The kale was in large pieces hard to eat, and a few pieces of bacon and cheese for $17???? Not worth it. Gusto 101 is an Italian restaurant serving Southern Italian classics located on Portland and King Street. I remember vaguely a long time ago stopping by with friends and wanting to dine in but they didn't have a spot for us as drop-ins. B had booked the restaurant for our 6:15 p.m. meal but due to work commitments and a long commute, we didn't arrive until 7:15 -- almost an hour later. I was fully anticipating that we would be turned away and need to pick a new restaurant to dine at since they only would only save our spot for 15 minutes. However, when we got there, we were still given our table! Yay! Apparently, B had been texting them to keep pushing our reservation by 30 minutes at a time and they obliged. I was so impressed with their customer service and appreciated it so much. Sitting down at our two-seater table, the restaurant was very loud due to all the patrons as well as their loud music which amplified the bass a lot. It was difficult to hear what B was saying over the table at times. It was also quite dim inside, so my pictures of the food were blurry. Looking at the menu, we realized that their items seemed authentically Italian. We were excited to try the food and see how it stacked up against the real deal when we had travelled to Italy. I loved how our server was so attentive, efficient, and friendly. She provided effective service without being too intrusive. We ordered the octopus as the appetizer, and the pepe e cacio pasta and the mushroom pasta. I have heard about this mushroom pasta for as long as I've heard about the Gusto name so it was a no-brainer that I had to try it. Our octopus appetizer (Polipo) arrived in a short time. It was nicely presented on a wooden board with four types of sauces accompanying it in dollops around the board. One was a green chimichurri sauce, a lemony white sauce, a red chili piquillo purée, and a dark green olive tapenade smeared across the board. There was a cold lemon potato salad and fried capers too. The grilled octopus was so soft and tender, almost to a point of being a bit mushy actually. The flavours tied in together well. It was a good appetizer but expensive for $20 in my opinion (eating out in Toronto is becoming a real treat these days) -- the appetizer cost as much as our pasta mains. The two pasta dishes arrived at the same time during which time I also asked the food runner to add a rapini dish to our table. The Mafalde ai Funghi had thick layers of ribbon-shaped pasta with wavy edges with the porcini, portobello, and oyster mushrooms on top. Each piece of mafaldine was covered with ample sauce and it was truffle cream sauce. The flavours were exquisite. The pasta was very al dente though so there was a lot of thorough chewing involved. The Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe was a tiny portion! I compared it to the one we had in Rome, Italy. Like the real thing, it arrived by itself on a plate with no accompaniments. At first taste, the spaghetti was very rich with pecorino cheese and thus very salty. There wasn't enough black pepper to it, which is what makes the dish. This spaghetti wasn't as al dente though which was preferred for me. Our verdict was that the flavour of the mushroom pasta was great albeit too al dente while the cheese and pepper spaghetti was nicely textured but too salty. Each one had its fine points though. However, if you order the cacio e pepe by itself you might be still hungry afterwards. Our order of Rapini arrived too and it was a bigger portion than I expected for a side! It had long stalks of rapini with some fried garlic on it. The rapini were seeped with chili oil too so some of it was quite heaty. B had brought a dessert from an external vendor but our server informed us that a $3 serving charge per person would apply if we wanted it served at the table. That price wasn't worth it so we saved the dessert to eat elsewhere. The single serving espresso arrived in the cutest espresso set with a small spoon. It smelled so good. I licked the spoon and it was so bitter! Espresso is not my thing. I'm glad I got to try Gusto 101 for the first time. Will I be back? Not sure. I prefer a brighter atmosphere to dine in comfortably and where I can hear my guests. (Also, we weren't overly full after the meal.) read more

My boyfriend and I were really excited about this place. We came here for their mushroom pasta. We arrived Gusto 101 around 12pm. We were told to go to the second floor. It was really crowded on the first floor.The second floor was really spacious with glass windows and ceilings and it was a sunny day. We were given a brunch menu but there was no mushroom pasta on it. So we just ordered whatever it's on the menu. I ordered the Omelette. It came with crispy potato and purple kale salad. The egg was made with truffle oil, cheese, mushrooms and spinach. It smelled really good. I also enjoyed the salad with some pumpkin seeds and artichoke vinaigrette on it and the potato was amazing as well. My boyfriend got a Gusto "Americano" Hamburger. I had a bite and it was not bad at all! The beef was medium rare( that's how we usually like our beef cooked). The burger came with Tuscan fries. The fries was really good! We enjoyed our meals but we were also really disappointed not able to try their mushroom pasta. It would be five stars if I knew the mushroom pasta was a "secret menu" for brunch. We didn't know that until I asked the server at the end of our meals. Overall the price was pretty decent and the food quality was great. The ambiance here is the standout for me. Downstairs is cozy and dark (great date spot) while upstairs feels like a greenhouse -- full of natural light with tons of windows. Chairs were hard and uncomfortable and the noise level made conversation difficult, but the views made up for it. There aren't many kid-friendly restaurant options in the city, and this isn't an exception. We paid full price for buttered noodles and a pepperoni pizza with no cheese (our son is lactose intolerant), but the food was scrumptious. I ordered the lasagna -- some of the best and least greasy I've had -- while my husband got the branzino. He said it might be the best he's ever had. It was a nice and quick pick me up after work. Lenticchie was average.The lentils were flavoured with crispy salami, pachino tomatoes and zucchini. I couldn't taste the zucchini but the rest was nicely flavoured. Mushroom bruschetta and panna cotta was Michu better in comparison. Mushroom bruschetta was nice and crunchy. The mushrooms were flavoured nicely and brought out a lot of its natural flavours. The panna cotta has a citrusy taste and a really great summer treat! I hate leaving bad reviews, especially for places I used to consider go-to's, but I feel like I have to express my disappointment in today's service. My friends and I arrived around 8 PM and were seated right away - this is the first time that's happened to me, so we started the night in great moods! We knew what we wanted because we've been here (and 501) several times, so we placed our orders. Appetizers came out in a reasonable amount of time, but one friend got his main with his appetizer for some reason. That was OK, he was hungry . Then some time passes, then some more, and some more.. We see orders that look like ours passing by every minute, but none of them are for us. The waitress comes by and asks us if we got our food to which we answer, no. She comes back a while later and tells us the system is glitchy and that it should be coming any moment. AN HOUR AND A HALF passes and we still don't have our food. My pregnant friend asks our waitress if she's going to do anything about it, to which she answers, she'll talk to the managers. She did nothing. Our waitress would come by every now and then to check if we got our food, to which we answered no. We finally received our meals after my girlfriend went to someone (who wasn't serving us) and asked if our meals were ever coming, and he somehow brought our meals over. I wish our waitress had owned up to the fact that she didn't put our order in the system instead of blaming the system itself. There was barely anyone left in the restaurant by the time we were leaving... The waitress said they would comp the appetizers, but then proceeded to hand us bills with the appetizers still on it. I don't think she knew how to comp anything. By this point we just wanted to leave, it felt like we had spent an eternity there. Kind of spoiled a great night. She asked us how we wanted to split the bread, to which we answered, we thought you were comping it... Paying the bill was very confusing, I think our waitress was a bit new. I genuinely felt bad for her, but it was just very bad service. Maybe she needed more training. To be honest, I think what made the experience worse was our waitress saying things like, "if this was my restaurant your meal would be comped", then leave and come back to say "... is it good? is the food good?". It's like she wanted us to think they'd comp our meal but nah, headfake. I don't get to see my friends often so it's too bad when something like this happens. The food itself was good but man... our moods were killed. I used to recommend this place to out of towners, coworkers, and friends... but I won't be going forward based on how this was handled. Another thing I want to mention is that Uber pickups were annoying as we were seated next to the deliveries door. So they'd come quite frequently with their flashing bike lights to grab orders from the middle of the restaurant. It took away from our experience. read more

Probably my favourite Italian place in Toronto - definitely coming back for great food and drinks. Would recommend Gusto for date night or drinks and dinner with the girls. We came in around 7:30PM Saturday night and were seated relatively quickly. I ordered the Mushroom and Truffle pasta, boyfriend got the T Bone steak, and we had the beef tartare as our app. Drinks were so so good, I got the dragon fruit and watermelon cocktail and it tasted like juice but I could taste just the subtle flavour of hard liquor. Pasta was perfectly aldente and so much mushroom and truffle flavour, it brought me back to the truffle pasta I had in Florence. T Bone was great, flavour was really good and the addition of mushrooms was a nice touch to balance the strong flavour of steak. Beef tartare was surprisingly delicious, there was a truffle infused sauce that you could mix the beef with and place it on the baguette chip and not was that heavenly. There are places where I really just don't want to write reviews for because it'll just make getting a table that much harder. That being said, Gusto fully deserves this five-star review. 1. My party of 3 got really lucky--we didn't have a reservation but waited no more than 15 minutes, and the greeters were super friendly. One even went upstairs to find us at the bar, concerned we didn't get the notification text. 2. The bartender, besides being one of the most handsome men I've ever laid eyes on (I seriously wanted to get my flirt on, but I decided to behave), made fantastic drinks. My friend and I told him our usual drink preferences, and he recommended and mixed up different drinks for us both that we loved. (Third friend met up with us later, so we couldn't sample a third drink.) 3. The food was AMAZING. We ordered the Kale Caesar, the famous mushroom pasta (Mafalde de Funghi (sp?)), Cacio e Pepe, and Branzino to share and finished everything between the two of us. Our third friend ordered the cauliflower because he's on a diet. /shrug 4. We had to pass on dessert so can't review that. For all the food we had, the total came out to be $100 or so. We had an amazing server, her name was Kerri and we were just so impressed by her level of attention and customer service. She hands down made the experience even better. We loved the truffle mushroom pasta as it is very popular but also loved he arrancini and the kale salad. The tiramisu was to DIE FOR! It's now one of my go to places for authentic Italian comfort food! I highly recommend you go here and if you get Kerri, you will have an amazing experience no doubt like we did! I've been to Gusto 101 on a number of occasions (for brunch and dinner) and it's great every time. The atmosphere and decor of the restaurant gives off an industrial, rustic, and trendy vibe. The service is friendly and I've rarely had to wait for a table here (brunch is especially a good time to go because it's pretty quiet then!). I've gone for dinner numerous times but never had to wait that long for a table (maybe since usually we only have a party of 2). Went one time for brunch and the waitress had forgotten to put our order in which resulted in us waiting a long time for our food. As a result, she offered us a choice of free dessert (which was awesome!). Dishes I would get again: Uova in Camicia (brunch) - Like an eggs benny except on brioche bread, with crispy prosciutto and fontina cheese. Sangria - Umm...it's sangria and it's good! Need I say more? Mafalde ai Funghi - I am not a huge fan of mushrooms to begin with but I would eat mushrooms if it was cooked like this any day. Love it! We ordered the kale Cesar to share, to start. It was fantastic, the dressing and crispy bits of bacon were perfect. I ordered the shrimp pasta as my main and was a little disappointed. Although there were lots of shrimp and they were cooked perfectly, I found that the sauce tasted like it can straight from a jar. With very little flavour or garlic, I was disappointed. Husband and I came here for brunch on a Sunday. We were seated upstairs in nice weather, and everyone from the hosts and server were very nice though not overly attentive (we had to flag our server down a couple of times). It wasn't crowded and the fresh air was nice. We ordered the special of the day, mushroom pasta, the steak off the brunch menu, and the panna cotta. The mushroom pasta was delicious even if the presentation left much to be desired. The flavors of truffle really shone through and was present in every bite. The portion looked small, about half of what you'd find in American restaurants and a third of pasta dishes in Italy, but with how much truffle they used, I'm not surprised or disappointed. Quality over quantity any day. The steak was a nice surprise--flank (I think is what they used) tends to be lean, but the chef treated it very well so that it was juicy and flavorful. The egg was perfect, and though I have hated beans all my life, these smelled so good and were seasoned so well that I actually ate a few bites before the texture triggered my dislike. The peppers probably could've been sautéed for a shorter amount of time, but now I'm just being picky. There were many elements on the dish, but all worked well together. We had hoped that the panna cotta would remind us of our trips to Italy, but it was quite different. This felt more of a pudding or a custard, and the preserves they used were overpowering for our non-sweet tooth. We both had to rinse our mouths after. The only real issue we came across was finding a short, dark hair in the pasta. We opted not to be fussy and didn't notify our server or send the plate back, but it seems that the restaurant owner monitors the reviews here, so perhaps this can help the expeditor be more cognizant of issues like this. read more

I was looking for some great Italian places to try out in Toronto and this place caught my attention. The reservation is recommended here. We missed our reservation. So, we had to sit in patio area on the roof near the bar. The other option was to wait for 45 mins. The place has a dim lit kind of ambience. The staff is very well trained and is very friendly. Now, coming to food, we started with Tuscan fries and Mushroom Bruschetta. Fries were crispy and then Bruschetta just tasted amazing. In Mains, we tried their famous Truffle Mushroom Pasta and Melanzane Pizza. Both dishes just tasted heavenly. The base of Pizza was very thin and full of cheese. The Pasta was creamy and so yummy. We ended our meal with their Chocolate Cake and Tiramisu. Both of them were really good, especially the Tiramisu one. Overall, a great place to try some amazing Italian food. I've only been to Gusto for brunch, and I love this place. The food is nice, and the ambiance is fantastic. First of all, I must say that the space is very attractive. It has feel of a converted garage. It's open and airy, with a big open kitchen. It has lots of nice rustic accents. The place is quite big, and so you can always get a spot even for a weekend brunch. This is a breath of fresh air in a city like Toronto, where it seems that standing in line for a brunch is the norm. If you're like me, then standing in line for a brunch is not your favorite way to start the weekend. In fact, being vertical is my least favorite position on a weekend morning, especially after a night of drinking. At Gusto they always seat you down promptly and get your order going right away. The food is pretty good. The kale salad is Cavolo Nero (kale salad) is a must. I never knew kale could taste so good. They have the standard brunch fare, like frittata and omelette. But they also have a large selection of tasty pizza and pasta. While here, you should stroll around the restaurant and check out the nice rooftop patio, the private dining room downstairs which looks like a cellar, and the washroom with co-ed sinks! Watch people do a double take, as they think they entered the wrong washroom. read more

I've been to Gusto 101 several times and absolutely love it! They have a gorgeous patio which is heated in the winter. I only wish the restaurant was slightly less popular so that it wouldn't be so hard to get a seat! House wine (red or white) is just $1 per ounce, and you can order at any increments. The alcoholic demon inside of me is leaping in excitement! Now onto the food! Polipo ($14.50) - Grilled octopus, chimichurri, olive tapenade, piquillo puree, arugula and fried capers. I'm not always a fan of grilled octopus, but this one was done well. The exterior was marvelously charred in the most delicious way, and the octopus itself was quite tender. Bruschetta Guanciale e Taleggio ($10.95). Overall, I found this bruschetta to be a little salty, and I needed something to offset that salt. Arancini ($9.95) - wild mushroom risotto, fontina cheese, tomato sauce. These risotto balls are practically $5 each so I found that a little pricey. Aside from that, I did enjoy the arancini a lot, especially when they were served piping hot. Lasagne ($17.95) heirloom tomato, wild mushroom, italian eggplant, yellow zucchini, kale butter. We visited on a Sunday and luckily for us, lasgane was the special for the day! This was a very solid effort- the pasta layers were thin and delicate, so overall the dish didn't feel overly heavy, as lasagne often do. The sauce was also delectable and there were no complaints at the table. Mushroom fettuccine ai funghi ($17.50) - portobello, porcini, oyster mushrooms, truffle paste, light cream sauce. Hands down, one of my favourite pastas in town. I am particularly fond of mushroom pasta, but this was one of the best I've had! The al dente pasta was perfect for soaking up all the deep, earthy flavours of the mushrooms. This is a must try! Overall, the food was amazing, the atmosphere is lovely and you really can't beat $1 per ounce wine on tap! I will be back for sure. read more

Before I begin to say anything, I have to get this out: The Beef Carpaccio! Oh my goodness - it is STELLAR! You need to try it. With that being said, I went to Gusto 101 late afternoon on a Saturday. The hostess and waiter were both very friendly and knew the menu better than the back of their own hands. They were more than happy to share their personal favourites (which, later on, became my personal favourites). The grilled octopus, although nowhere near as spectacular as the aforementioned carpaccio, was also a notable highlight of our meal. I will definitely be back here in the near future. The menu has quite the girth to it and the next time I go, I plan to try one of their many pasta dishes. The table adjacent to us was having a field day of compliments when theirs arrived and I need to know what the fuss is about. read more

Great drinks and well-made pasta. The fettuccine was like silky ribbons. Carpaccio was so tasty . Nice ambience and great location. Easy to get to via subway or street car. Great bar area near the entrance where you get natural lighting if you come before sunset. There are two patios, one being on the ground level and the other being from the second floor providing an elevated view of the neighbourhood. The rooftop patio also has interesting features created from the skylights of the building. read more
