Nice Hidden Gem deep in the Bronx. You can tell it's an older style version of bowling not bad for $14 per person it's definitely vintage and can use a bit of tcl but that's definitely its charming character that I can respect. They have vending machines with snacks and drinks & crane games. They play a lot of oldies (before my time) but I can definitely appreciate it & loved the vibe. If zero stars were an option that is definitely what they'd get! This place is an absolute joke, they are extremely rude. I walked in with my sister as we waited for the rest of our party of 10 to arrive. It was completely empty and the older white man working at the counter came over very rudely asking "How long?" our party would because according to him we could not wait in the EMPTY lobby. The place is fairly large and againn EMPTY. We proceeded to walk over to check on the prices since the place is cash only and our party needed to get cash from elsewhere since they don't have an atm either in which case the same worker came over antagonizing us and yelling that the price was $15 per person and that we had nothing else to be looking at. For a place that was about to receive a decent amount of business on a day that they were completely empty you'd think that they'd be a little nicer and more welcoming. When we confronted the worker and asked why he was being rude his answer was that he was "providing customer service" which anyone can agree it was anything but. We decided to take our business elsewhere as it was very clear that they did not deserve our business. Do not give this place your money, it is very clear that they do not want it or they'd have the slightest decency to treat their customers with respect! OWNER PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!! -There were no alcoholic drinks, if the coffee which I kindly threw out after you asked looked like anything but then maybe your glasses needed to be checked. Also if you see potential business as loitering unfortunately that explains all I need to know about this business and why it was completely empty on a sunday afternoon. I called this establishment at 3:53 pm on 9/13 to inquire if they sell alcoholic beverages like any bowling alley such as for example bowlmor. Just to confirm because their website description clearly shows "bar". The person picked up the phone without greeting me and was very rude. I asked if they sell drinks and the man says "THIS AINT NO CLUB , We sell beer" A rude response to someone who wants to attend your bowling alley. I wrote a review expressing my concern on google over lack of customer service and the owner response was I need to get vaccinated and that I created a fictional story. I have been fully vaccinated since 7/1/21, and it's disappointing that a establishment will say you're a liar before investigating the truth with their employees. Would give it ZERO STARS if I could. For one, they only take cash and it's about $15 a game. They don't have an ATM so you have to go scavenge for one. Most of their staff members stand around doing NOTHING. There's a full bar but NO bartender so they ONLY SERVE bottles of beer. They tried to make me wait 15 minutes to just take a bottle out of the fridge and hand it to me. They have a kitchen but nobody works it so there's NO FOOD!! It's false advertising!!! This is a very old school bowling alley that is frequented by locals. The place is very basic and no frills, but was clean when I went. The knocked over pins did get stuck twice for us, but nothing that the reset button could not fix. Depending on the time of the day and week, they charge $7-$9 per game per person, with shoe rental already included. It sounds pricey, but all bowling places in the 5 boroughs are similar or even more expensive nowadays. Went to Gun Post Lanes with my kids and family members to enjoy the evening. But it's not what I saw on their website. The place looks run down on its last leg. There's no ATM everything is Cash. There was no billard to play pool. They said it's closed down as well. They have Liquor at the bar but they don't sell it, only wine coolers and beer. They have a list of foods you can buy but they only sell pizza. The worst pizza ever. Look like two-day-old pizza that they reheated and the cheese didn't melt and the people who worked there look like they never stepped out from the'80s. Seems like the same people who open the alley still works there. The alley itself needs a serious makeover. My family and I had to make our own fun to enjoy the night. Three stars for nostalgia and keeping the tradition alive. This bowling alley was a regular Friday/Saturday night destination for my family when I was in my early youth. Friday and Saturday nights are some of their busiest times with some lanes occassionally reserved for leagues. The place boasts a fully operational bar, billiards tables, a snack bar with solid bar fare (nachos, wings etc), and of course bowling lanes. It's no secret that I'm not a bowling pin queen but I did earn a few notches of luck at the billiards tables, all while bowling (getting bowled out is more like it). This is one of the two bowling alleys where my parents decided that everyone in our house needed a personal bowling ball and gloves. This is the place where I enjoyed my first eye candy and where hanging with your parents didnt seem so uncool. Of course, as an adult this place is way more fun! Sadly, there aren't many bowling alleys in NYC and certainly not that many which have fully operational billiards tables as well. Service is prompt and friendly. If you become a regular, they definitely show you love! read more

Any DOE schools , stay clear. The management is one of the nastiest I have worked with being at a school. Our scholars had bowling shoes on and the person there said they couldn't bowl without a check. Meanwhile, he told me they accepted purchase orders ( DOE Payment ) and then said no. We had heartbroken students. Admin pulled money together to have them bowl but by then, the students asked why would you ever give your money to this establishment! Apparently we agreed and left . We should have known when they couldn't get it together when we asked for an invoice . What a nasty man we worked with ... I still don't know his name but call the bowling alley and you will get his nasty self on the phone. No thank you ! Had a great time bowling with my family on Friday night. However, the bar was not ready. Had very little choices available for bottled beer, the Hard Cider I finally purchased was warm and there was no beer available on tap. It seems the tap was not working. They booked you in lanes close to other people and unfortunately the patron next to us decided to take our bowling balls, without asking - and we were still bowling. SMH....lastly they were in our lane as we tried to bowl so they could take their pictures and make their videos. Very inconsiderate! Other than that- I would go back. We had fun!!! read more

This bowling alley is incredibly disorganized and the person who seemed to be running things was rude and ignorant. This was a class trip with 4 classes including mine for students with disabilities, (on Autism awareness day nonetheless ). After waiting for over 20 minutes to pay for our students and get assigned a lane, we (other teachers and I) were somewhat annoyed. When we explained that we only had a certain amount of time and that we wasted 20 minutes of that waiting for the disorganized management to get things in order with other schools, he shrugged us off and told is there was nothing he could do and it was basically not his problem. You could only imagine our dismay and the pressure of having to make 31 students wait for what they expected to be a fun day. After making a decision whether we should stay or go, 2 classes (mine included) decided to stay while the other 2 classes left. So after finally paying for our students and getting assigned a lane (35 minutes later) we told the manager that we needed a dinosaur (to assist the kids with bowling) because our kids have disabilities and need assistance, his response was "where are the wheelchairs?" Up to this point, I was very patient and decided to continue on with this bowling fiasco. It took alot of effort not to "school" this man on the word disability. Against my better judgment, I deferred to write this review so that others would know not patronize this place. I have been here on my own personal time, but this place will never get my business. We had 60 eighth graders. They jammed us on four lanes. The staff was very rude and disrespectful. Jose even said I look like a very sad person for speaking up for my students. I visited the bowling alley on Sunday, with a group of 6. Wow what a disappointment. They are sooooo run down its not even funny. They have a bar that sells only beer and wine coolers and they have a menu and only sell pizza. There was empty bowling lanes yet the gave us a lane where there was already people at. So we kind awas over crowded. Bathrooms are really really really old the say there's pool yet no pool tables in sight the arcade They say they have is just one Mario kart machine and two basketball shooting machines. They don't sell sodas only from a overly priced vending machine 2.00 for cans and 3.00 for regular bottle soda. Let's not even get Into the music choice it's a bowling alley and all they played all night was R&B I felt depressed they need more good music . And they need a good mix of Spanish and English music. First I'd like to say If I could give a ZERO I would!! Had my baby's birthday there for the convenience and price. But I guess I got what I paid for!! Besides the fact that we brought our little corner to life and the kids had fun. They told me to get there early so that when I get there they have ppl playing in the lanes that was assigned to me. I asked for a pitcher of water since the kids was thirsty and they said they can't do that. When cutting the cake I asked for plates and a knife and was told they can't do that. This place has potential. I've lived here for my entire life and this is the first time I'm coming into Gun Post Lanes. That being said, I know this place has been around for a while. I can't give it 5 stars though because it's got tons of flaws. Not the kind of flaws that give a place character - more like they desperately need improvement or this place will go downhill. The scoring isn't completely accurate, so me and my friends started keeping score by hand. The equipment is very very old school, and the lanes are very clearly not greased. There is a reason the cashier says "No Refunds" when you pay. That's because this place is a dump. The lanes are bone dry and were not oiled. Even with no one else in the place, they couldn't put our party onto a pair of lanes to alternate lanes, so we had to split up. The other half of the group had to change lanes as the lane shut off 3x in the first 2 frames. I have never been so disappointed in how poor of a condition a bowling alley was. Had to reset the lane for pins ever couple of frames. Maybe there were 15 pins per lane. Super slow to get through 3 bowlers. If we had known ahead of time and another alley was not closed, we would have never come to this dump in the first place. read more

There was a group of people bowling next to us that didn't have on mask, they kids were bowling in our lane, and if one person was suppose to be bowling at a time why was it 10 people standing in front of the lane and blocking our lane. When this was brought to the manager attention he act like he was scare to address the people his response was " we can't have a riot" That's unacceptable response. Gun Post Lanes bowling alley has been around for ages I remember going here since I was 12 years old. Much hasn't change. This places is such a drab, it's your no frills kind of place compared to the "super bowling alleys' we have these days. This place has not updated it bowling alley to the technology ages. An employee has to enter you name for you on the scoring monitor machine. Our lane went out of commission twice; we had to switch to another lane. A lot of families come here to bowl. This bowling alley is within walking distance to my home that's the only plus about this bowling alley. There is a small enclosed bar area where they serve liquor and you can watch the game on TV which can be a plus for a few people. The bowling price comes with the shoe rental which was $6 a game, which is cheaper than the "super bowling alleys" today. read more

I had a awful field trip to this blowing place. Two of my friends, Elicia & Brady, who parents had paid for the trip did not get to bowl. They had around 12 lanes open and did not let them use them. Our school also had problems with the blowing balls, which kept getting stuck, which meant we had to wait longer. It's cheap, but it is an awful experience. We paid full price for game and shoes, and we did not get shoes. I also like to say that this was a reward trip for kids, were they were supposed to have fun. When our principal asked us how it was, many of the kids said bad. read more

As much as I'd like to complain about this place, doing so ironically takes away from its niceties. I mean, on its face, there are complaints abound: the manager/owner is a pompous asshole who will give you attitude anytime you ask him for anything; the game screen will constantly crash during your game and you'll have to walk over to the front counter and get attitude just for asking them to reset the screen; the bowling alley looks straight out of 1974; they don't take debit cards like it's 1974 (only cash); vending machine items are 3 dollars; there's no parking lot; and most employees seem generally annoyed that you're even there. For all of those reasons, however, the place is generally empty, which works out great! We threw a kids birthday party here and the kids had ample room to run around and have a good time. As adults, we could play game after game and not worry about being rushed out of a lane because there were no other patrons there willing to be treated like shit - like us. Games are cheap, too. Only $7.50 a game, which convinced me this place has to be a drug front. Also, on a "that's cool" note, if you bowl a hard strike, it will completely shut down the game screen and screw up the electronics in the pin reset, leaving you feeling like The Incredible Hulk. So, if you ever just want to bowl some good games without all the flash that comes in bowling alleys where the staff treats you with decency and respect, this is your place. Stepping into Gun Post Lanes is like stepping back into 1988! Once inside you are completely surrounded by neon, tacky (and FILTHY) carpets, and some of the most out-dated machinery I've ever used. I can't complain about the prices, although the shoes felt icky... They fill the lanes in order, so even on a slow night you are packed very closely between families and drooling at the empty lanes at the end. The score-computer is antique and the staff has to set it up for you, lest you press the wrong button and it explodes. There was no shortage of bowling balls in many different sizes and weights. The bar was reasonably cheap, although with all the Heineken signs around, you'd think they would actually serve Heineken. Our lane had two freeze-ups during two games and we waited for ten minutes for the first to be fixed. The bathroom matched the carpets (FILTHY). Not sure I would return here...sometimes it's worth it to pay a little more for updated equipment and hygiene. read more

So I came here just to past some time with a friend and I must say it was a horrible decision on my part. Lets start with they don't take cards which is really inconvenient. It does have a very old school feel to it which didn't bother me as much. They don't have very much varieties in bowling balls, the lane I was in kept eating the bowling balls and not returning them. I had to call an attendant more than twice to retrieve the balls. The pin reset was moving slower than I would have like to imagine. And I guess I choose a day to go when there were nothing but loud obnoxious individuals there because the behavior of some of them didn't make the place seem like a family environment. I went with a group of students and other educators. The owner was unaccommodating to our students and said that students had to bowl in groups of 10 or leave. I called via phone a week before the trip to ask if we could bring our students and if we needed a reservation and he said to just bring them in because he had more than enough lanes. We were told that it was just $7 per game, which we tried to negotiate but understood that we were already getting a good price so we dropped it. And we worked to put the kids into groups of 10 even though we felt that it was too large to enjoy a good game. But again, let me restate that we were told we didn't need a reservation. Otherwise, we would've made one because that's what we do when planning trips for large groups. If it was that important, the owner/manager should've informed us when we called. And now he's calling us liars. How dare he?!!! If he wasn't the one who spoke to us, then he needs to get his employees on the same page. He is the liar! We also had a few students who didn't want to bowl but wanted to be with their friends. We figured that would be okay as I've been to this same gallery before with people who didn't want to bowl and were allowed to just sit and chill. And in smaller groups. It was no issue at all. They were clearly judging our students because they're Black and Brown teens from the Bronx. In order to avoid further drama for the kids, I headed back with a group of kids who just wanted to spend time with their friends. How disappointing. For all of us. Another answer the owner is lying about: we don't have a record of poor behavior. Idk who he has spoken to because we haven't been to other alleys in the Bronx. People love hosting our students (we've been invited to the UN multiple times and have partnerships with corporate entities that take our kids on trips) and this alley was our first choice. We could've bowled elsewhere but we wanted to support a local Bronx business and teach our kids that there are good things to do in their own borough. How unfortunate. The owner says he doesn't want us back, well that's a big mistake. We know people (I'm from the Bronx myself) and we will make sure they know to stay away. Oh and to say we are "teachers." If he wants to see our teaching certifications, he can look us all up and see our credentials while he sits around in his dingy bowling alley that will probably close soon. After reading reviews of Gun Post Lanes from my fellow Yelpers, I updated my tetanus and Hep A vaccines and prepared myself for a horrid experience. What I found was quite the contrary! To put it simply, GPL boasts everything a bowling alley should have (in no particular order): a cash-only bar serving ice cold Budweisers; a veritable cornucopia of open lanes from which to choose; slow jamz on the speakers; a neon bowling-themed carpet; a futuristic cityscape backdrop; a drop ceiling; a sign proclaiming BOWLING IS FUN. In a city where we've come to expect bottle service, plush couches, and bouncers at our bowling alleys, GPL brings us back home. A place where we remember what matters in this short life. A place where we all belong. I close by quoting one of the beautiful pastel signs on the walls: Gun Post Lanes--"Home of Champions" indeed! Outdated equipment that breaks down often. Ex. Pins don't reset properly. And the automatic scoring is frequently incorrect. We brought 2 games and wanted to leave after the first. Management shrugged off the fact that there were problems and insisted that there is a no refund policy. And this being cash only so there would not have been any CC fees. Well I also have a policy. If you work in an establishment or own an establishment in a predominately black/brown neighborhood..... and a large majority of your patrons/clientele are black/brown.... the words "YOU PEOPLE or YOUR KIND" have zero place in your vocabulary.... This KIND OF PEOPLE'S money pays for your salary, pays the rent on the place you work at...... Last night a group of us went to play pool in The Bronx. Here's how the night STARTED... My husband and I walked into the bar located inside the bowling alley. As we were still waiting for people. It was around 11pm. We ask the bartender why is he not selling liquor.... he said "because I feel like it". With an attitude so I say to my husband "well I guess he doesn't need our money" and we start to walk out. As we walked out the bartender said to my cousin something along the lines of "You know how YOU PEOPLE GET" Now some would ask why didn't you all leave, the simple answer is we were meeting up with close to 20 people and didn't want to ruin the night. Now some will say it wasn't that bad, that he probably didn't mean to say it, he might not have meant it that way, that I/we are probably exaggerating... well NO thats what racism is. Exactly how we felt.... Now lets get on... we DID say something, only to have an employee come over and make excuses for his boss. Now in situations like this.... theres feelings of complete helplessness. You can't get upset and defend yourself properly because the person will deny it. You will look crazy and just confirm their beliefs. Two if the cops come,YOU will be in the wrong because the person will deny what really happened. The night continues... more subtly racism.... I only noticed what was directed towards us.... who knows if it happened to others... but I could tell this was a normal occurrence. This man felt too comfortable and too confident in his actions and speech for this to be a one time thing. The last straw was when our games ended and we wanted to reopen the same lanes... and were told NO.. The cashier said he supervisor told her NOT to reopen our lanes.. When one of us went to speak to the manager/supervisor we were told "They don't need OUR kind of money" Excuse me 14 of the 18 people we were with have J O B's... like real life jobs that actually pay real MONEY. My family was looking forward to going bowling for a relatives birthday but after 5 problems with our bowling balls getting stuck, and our screen randomly shutting down we were considering leaving. The screen kept displaying the wrong score, the pins didn't reset atleast twice and we had to keep getting the help of a attendant because the bowling balls kept getting stuck in the back therefore not coming through on our end. This is without question the most UNPROFESSIONAL establishment I think I've ever encountered. My son and his friends went there to bowl despite my objections having read prior reviews of this place and their management style. After being rudely told that everyone had to be over the age of 21 to bowl, he spotted a sign that stated CLEARLY 18. He is 19 WITH A VALID NYS ID, AS WERE HIS ENTIRE PARTY. Then this "manager" cursed out my son after he asked why they couldn't bowl when the sign clearly stated they could, trying to actually SPEND money in this shithole. Believe me, if I could give this place no stars I would. My son is a prep educated child who is a current sophomore at a well known university, not some hood as this manager so eloquently stated. He's very lucky I didn't go over there and kick his ass, because I actually AM THAT HOOD. Extremely rude owner. He was so inflexible with our group of students. The kids were respectful despite his attitude. The place was empty but he required groups of 10. There were 24 lanes but we had to all be stuck in a corner with 3 lanes. No one else came the whole time but we still couldn't spread out at all. The management then responded to our first review calling us liars! So here is my response to THAT: Not to start a petty comment war, but the management responded to my previous post calling me a liar, and nothing could be farther from the truth. We chose this place because of the price - it's the cheapest place around. We didn't bring food into the alley. We just had a group of maybe 5-6 boys who didn't want to bowl when they found out that it was required to have 10 students per lane. Instead of being allowed to sit while their friends bowled, they were asked to leave. All of the boys were being quiet and respectful. It was 10AM. No one was eating. As for the actual lanes, it's worth repeating that there are 24 lanes available, and they forced a group of 30 students to take only 3 lanes. There was one other group in the corner, which mean that for the entire time we were there, literally 20 lanes were available that we had no access to. And because the actual machines in each lane are so slow, we never even got to finish playing. It takes a long time for 10 people to finish 10 rounds of bowling. We had told the students we'd bowl for maybe an hour and then leave for lunch, but we never even had time to eat because the games were taking so long. Students had to wait upwards of 5-10 minutes in between their turn to bowl. If we had even been able to use 5 lanes instead of 3, we would have had enough time. That policy was ridiculous. Also, let's be clear: management was very rude. They could have said anything along the lines of: "We're really sorry, but it's just our policy here. We wish we could help, but those are the rules. I hope you can understand." What did they say? "We know what we're doing here. You don't like it, you can leave." Our students made the best of a crappy situation, and they deserve credit for staying calm after being so disrespected and condescended to. The fact that management would call us liars just to save face - instead of doing the right thing and simply apologizing - shows more about who they are than any of my comments. If even just one school group reads this and decides to go elsewhere, then my comments will have done their job. We don't have a lot of power in this world, but one thing we have power over is how we spend our money. So, I encourage all schools to take your business elsewhere. There aren't a lot of options, but hopefully I've convinced at least one school to think twice about this place. read more
