A NYC chain that i had never tried but right next to my hotel. I had some time to kill before the Musuem of Broadway opened and I needed a littlensomething so I pulled in. Limited seating. Amazing floort Ile design (thibk teal and modern designs.) Decorated very modern and spacious. Julian was working the counter and God bless him! He had to deal with old people ordering and man were they struggling but he had patience! I had an iced matcha with almond milk and tried the caramelized banana bread. Both were good. First off the drinks are a wonderful temperature from sip 1 but did cool quick as we walked 10 blocks. Then getting into the flavors; the bananas in pajamas was cinnamony and just the right amount of banana flavor and a hint of caramel. The drip coffee was a solid classic coffee. Lastly the pistachio and salted caramel special was very sweet and delicious but wish it had a bit more pistachio flavor. We got one pastry, a chocolate croissant for $6 and it had a quarter size amount of chocolate in the whole thing. Pretty disappointed. It's a small spot but has several one person tables and 2 high tops. A cute spot to sip a hot beverage and work. read more

I was looking for a local coffee spot on my way to my collaborative book release in times square and passed Gumption Coffee. I ordered and they gave my regular black drip back pretty quickly. It tasted full and slightly bitter and not burnt and acidic like that nasty chain, which I appreciate. Viva los local coffee shops! read more

I've walked by this coffee shop a few times, and it definitely catches your eye -- vibrant colors, cool art, and a really nice setup even though the space is small. I tried the iced pistachio salted caramel latte from their seasonal menu, but it was way TOOOOOO sweet for me. The pistachio flavor completely overpowered everything, and I couldn't taste the caramel at all. Not really a fan of this one. Meh. read more

When I visited NYC this week I think I had 5 different lattes, and my vanilla oatmilk latte from Gumption was by far my favorite! While walking around I'm not certain what about this coffee shop caught my eye- maybe the signage, maybe the color scheme, or maybe I was just at the right place at the right time. Regardless when I entered I was pleased to see a decent crowd inside, but only 1 person ahead of me to order. The staff was friendly, and my coffee came out quickly. Let me start by saying that in this area there are not a lot of coffee places to visit. We didn't want to see another Starbucks and this was the nearest choice. It's not a horrible place, but don't expect anything much. It's pretty empty, not even in terms of the layout and table seating, but the lack of food and selection of pastries leaves something to be desired. On the plus side, the service was helpful. It's okay for a grab and go, but not for a longer visit. read more

Basically a place to run in and grab a cup of coffee. The coffee was good. The price was fine. A few standing tables and few places to sit. But the sitting spots were small and uncomfortable. Not a good place to get and work done. More like check your phone for messages and move on. They did have the normal assortment of coffee shop things to eat. It was clean and the service was friendly. If I need a cup of coffee on the run, I would stop in. Not the place to grab a cup of Kobe and get some work done. read more

Amazing coffee! Conveniently located by Bryant Park. The only issue was that their menu had two sizes for the cold brew, but the barista told me that there is only one size for cold brew $4.50 + tax. Would go back as their cold brew is stronger than Allegro Coffee, but has a good energy. The barista is nice and friendly. read more

This place is nice and simple - very few seating and a couple standing tables. The interior is bright (with a teal, fuchsia, and white theme) and colorful compared to the typical minimal, black & white interiors I see in most coffee shops. The barista recommended the cold brew (Ethiopian roast, I believe?) to me, which was perfect on a sunny Friday afternoon. I'm usually not a fan of light roast cold brews (because it's usually super acidic), but this one was very refreshing! It was not too acidic with a nice after taste that reminded me of prunes or figs. Most coffee shops tend to use a medium or dark roast for their cold brews, but I appreciate the light roast here! read more

No Gumption, no guts, no glory!! My Dad, the Colonel loved the word gumption and drilled this in me very early. I think I was 17 months old ;) Tuesday March 16th Manhattan, NYC - I just finished an 8 hour project and was walking west on W 45th Street when the catchy name caught my one open eye. The great and mellow interior with that lovely, relaxing blue color is the first thing I noticed as i entered this clean, simple and neatly organized coffee shop. Just opened in October 2020 and hours on weekdays 7-4, closed Saturday Sunday. Great Baristas Mike and Joe who were cool, knew their stuff and were on the ball re my contact info requested per Covid if I wanted to dine/sip and sit in. Good, hot and fresh medium roast coffee. Basic pastries and muffins. Fun conversation with both Mike and Joe who were genuine. I will definitely be back. It is a 4 minute walk from Times Square. There are seats outside that will be full next week with temps in the 60's. Manhattan in the spring with some Gumption in one hand, now that's what I am talkin' about!!!!!!! read more

Pretty solid coffee spot. My friends and I met here on a Thursday afternoon to grab coffee, and my iced coffee was as I would've expected it to be. They also had cool seasonal drinks, so take a look at the menu by the cash register (not the board where the permanent menu is). I took off one star because the seating here is a bit wonky - one table to stand at and three small tables with one long bench against the wall so you can't face your counterpart. The bench is just one side so you're sitting next to your friends rather than across. Also, the music was quite loud so we had to talk loudly to hear each other. read more

I've only gotten the Matcha Latte from here, so can't speak about the coffee, but the Matcha Latte did not taste very good. It tasted extremely bitter, and just had an odd taste (not the typical grassy like taste of matcha). I'm not too sure how to describe it. Maybe the proportions were off since it tasted a bit better after I added more milk. I would have to get it again to see if it was just a one time thing. However, the storefront was very cute, and it really does seem like the coffee from here would be good. read more

However, I did not try their regular coffee, and this is a coffee shop after all, so I'd probably give them another try if I'm ever in the area. Extremely satisfying. I was running late and wanted a coffee and a pastry, and wanted to avoid Starbucks, since I know what to expect. So I yelped a place and found this one just 3 minutes from my hotel! I went in and the cashier was very inviting! I asked for a flat white with oat milk and then his top recommendations for some kind of pastry! He gave me 3 options--some kind of olive oil bundt, their chocolate chip cookie and I believe the cheese and thyme biscuit bread. It doesn't look like a biscuit of course but it sure was amazing. I hope I got the correct name, sorry, however, it was so tasty! I'm more on the savory side so I'll say, this was a great spot for a quick coffee and breakfast bite! read more

I haven't personally tried the bingsoo, but I've heard good things. The waffle is alright--all in all, come here to recharge and for the basque cheesecake!

After dinner with my friends, I was looking for dessert and I was glad to see this location closes relatively late on a weekday night at 11 pm. Upon walking in, I was greeted by a waiter who led us to one of the purple velvet chair booths that was perfect for two people and another waiter brought us a pitcher of water almost immediately. The menu is on a QR code already on the table and we were given ample of time to decide. My friend and I both already knew what we wanted to order. I got the purple Yam Souffle which takes 25 minutes to make and my friend got the fried squid tails. We also got a signature Rose Green Milk Tea to share. The waitress who took our order has great memory and recalled all of our items without writing it down. She also reminded me that I could adjust the ice and sugar levels of my drink which I had completely forgotten and would have got annoyed if my drink came out 100% sweetness. Another thing is that my drink order frequently comes out wrong at other locations so I was glad she got it right! Green tea instead of black tea and with milk instead of without milk. The purple Yam Souffle is just like the other locations. Hot, soft cakey texture balanced with an ice cold red bean Ice-Cream. So delicious! The squid tails on the other hand was not what we expected. It came out burnt and hard. The outer batter was not crispy either. We informed one of the waiters and he brought it back to inform the kitchen staff. We received a new batch that was not as burnt and had more flavoring this time around. However, the squid was still hard and not like the ones we get from other locations with smaller crispier pieces. Overall, it was still a good experience and I love the decorations at this location! Originally I wanted to try the strawberry matchamisu, however, was told that it sold out. What a bummer. The rose milk tea came with a themed pot and cups which is really cute. The rose fragrant smelled so good and the milk tea also tasted good and has a hint of rose taste. The cake was good, the boba was well cooked, chewy and flavorful! This time there was an unpleasant experience. At first when the Dubai affogato was served, we did not realize that the amount of the coffee was little until we saw another customer's dish that the volume of their coffee looked significantly more than ours. My friend brought it to the waitress attention but the waitress brushed it off and did not acknowledge our concern. When we finished and were about to leave, the same waitress came over and showed us that the container of the coffee was different and hence the volume of the coffee looked different. At this point, we did not care for it anymore. We would have been fine if the staff acknowledged our concern. We thought that maybe using standardized containers for the coffee would avoid this problem. Other than that, the food and drinks were good.

I needed a sweet pick-me-up after missing a train home. While the ice cream flavors looked interesting, I opted for a blue coconut iced matcha latte instead. Aside from the striking visuals, the drink tasted great. There was sweetness from the matcha and the coconut but not super overtly sugary. I also got a box of four donuts. They're a little pricey, but each donut is a pretty hefty ring of chewy glutinous rice flour batter. I had them the following morning, and the donuts still tasted fresh. There was a little bit of oiliness from the frying, but it did not taste off or too greasy. I think this is from the meticulous frying process and good management of the oil. I got the Cookies and Cream, Rose, Lavender, and Pistachios. I loved the Rose and Lavender flavors, especially the lavender which had a solid floral flavor without being perfume-y. I look forward to trying other donuts and sweets from Bear Donut in the future!

It's a really big space - there's a lot of seating both downstairs and upstairs. The pastries are a little bit pricey. I tried the mango cake and also the black sesame rice cake. The rice cake was good, but the sporks they give you are completely useless against the rice cakes. The mango cake was about the blandest cake I've ever had in my life. One good thing is that, at least on the upper level, they do not rush you out whatsoever. You can literally stay for as long as you want.

It's super easy to join via their app, and you earn 1 point per $1 spent toward free pastries, drinks, cake slices, and more and i even got a free pastry just for signing up. I ordered a chai latte and my free strawberry croissant pastry filled with soft custard cream and strawberries, dusted with powdered sugar. The strawberry croissant had fresh strawberries and cream and it was the perfect breakfast after a run in Central Park. It was easy to get to walking down from the Bryant Park area. When we got there it was busy, but not too busy. My wife and I split a slice of chocolate mousse cake. The price is just right for the perfect size slice for sharing. On our prior trip it was a lot busier and it took a while to get a seat so we could eat. This time it wasn't as crowded and we were able to sit right away after getting our slice. On future trips to New York we'll definitely have to come back and try some of the other items available.
